STX SuperCrew: Comfy, Tows great, Fits Garage

Very comfortable. Fits in garage. Tows my 3,500lb camper like a champ. Adequate Infotainment. Bought new for $27k. Fantastic Acceleration. Made in America. Modest yet sharp looks. My wife and I were shopping for a lightly used mid-size truck in Sept 2020 and decided to check out the prices on new trucks to compare pricing. Our eyes were initially set on a GMC Canyon because we loved the traditional looks and comfort of a Canyon rental we'd used months before. However, I've always had a soft spot for Rangers, since I'd learned how to drive stick-shift with one as a teenager and later owned one as an adult, and so we checked out the new Ranger first. Incredibly, the new Ranger STX was cheaper than the 2-3 year old Colorados and Canyons! We have never much valued high-tech infotainment but also didn't want a boring work-truck. The STX really seemed to fit the bill for us. Our requirements were four doors, excellent towing capability, bed-liner, American-made, bluetooth, garage-fitting, and comfort for a man my size (6'3" 210lbs). The XLT's touch-screen was nice, but we saved $1000 by getting the STX (and its admittedly dated traditional buttons with tiny screen). A couple of the XLT's extra driver-safety features would have been nice, but we couldn't pass-up the $27k price-tag for a new truck (I'm a cheap-o). 4x4 or the upgraded FX4 package were brief considerations, but, realistically, I didn't see the value in it, and I figure that the truck will hold-up better over time with less complexity. We had heavily considered a Ford F-150 as well, but full-size trucks just felt too big for our needs and keeping the truck in the garage is important for my wife and me. After 11,000 miles, I am very happy with my choices and purchase. I get 30mpg on the freeway at 70mph. I get about 13-14mpg while towing my Airstream at 65-70mph. The bluetooth works well enough for me to listen to audio-books on my commutes and weekend-warrior trips. I love that my black Ranger STX is not flashy in any way but has a modest tough motif. Long trips don't strain my back. The 270hp and 310ft-lbs are wonderful and, though I drive with a feather-foot, passing and merging capabilities are amazing. A longer bed would be nice but then I would have had to either sacrifice the four-door utility or the vehicle's fit in the garage. The new Ranger is also very bouncy when un-laden on bad roads. Lastly, the rear end sits pretty high without a load. A more level truck would look better (and I am too cheap and cautious to ever install a leveling kit) I am so happy to have found a powerful, American-made, new mid-size truck for well-below $30k. No regrets.

Three and a half stars actually...but very good.

2020 STX 4x4 XL supercab, the base model with vinyl floors, no chrome but with alloy wheels. Not a 5 star rating because of several things: suspension, the seat bottom and body panel fit. By far the worst flaw on the truck are the shocks. They are too soft in both compression and rebound damping and allow the suspension springs to throw the chassis and passengers every which way when driving on anything other than a perfect surface. The comments by others about feeling like you are in a boat are accurate. Stiffer aftermarket shocks here we come! The cost and hassle there will be worth it though because the rest of the driving experience is good. Lots of engine power on regular gas with 24 mpg at 70 mph. The transmission has three shift calibrations that cover every driving style you want. Brakes are strong and pedal feel is linear, much better than the vagueness of F150's. The seat bottom is too short for my 5' 11" frame. A three hour trip results in a bit of soreness underneath my thighs from a lack of support. Another inch or two in cushion length would make the otherwise excellent seats that much better. Lots of seat adjustments are included on these base model seats, much more than on my base model 2016 F150. The fender/hood gaps are uneven on the body. Not gross, not functionally inferior, just unusual to see nowadays on a new model. The paint is excellent. The interior on my base model, the no carpet XL, is actually quite good. Lots of hard plastic everywhere (it's a truck!) but it is nicely styled and assembled. Lots of storage for bottles etc., good stereo, bluetooth, easy phone pairing. Overall a solid truck, better driving than my 2016 F150 and it is a much more manageable size than that in town. Cheaper than the F150 too!

I love it, it rides like a truck should. So far everything has worked as expected. Mileage is running around 24 MPG on medium trips, good power for it's size. I got the sport package (18 inch wheels) and I may have to buy a stool to get up in the bed. I am a short old man:)

I'm very impressed with the new Rangers! I've always had at least a half ton pickup over the years. When I bought a new Harley, I didn't want a big payment on a truck. The salesman asked, would you like a new Ranger. Initially I thought, too small. After test driving one I bought it! No regrets!! Plenty of power and comfort. Love the 6 ft. bed too. Honestly more than enough for what I need and I'm impressed with the towing ability!
