Used 2004 Ford Explorer Consumer Reviews
transmission
bought my wifes explorer in 2006, with 9400 miles. at about 20,000 miles the tranny started hitching, we ignored it until got so bad we couldnt drive it.had the tranny rebuilt for 2,500 bucks. come find out there were a lot of 03,04 with the same problem. ford should have had a recall on these, if your looking at these yrs make sure u ask about the trannys! other hen that my wife loves her explorer, we live in maine and it it does great in snow

Loved it at first, but disappointed with the poor quality
When I first got this vehicle, I really liked it. After 8 years and 85,000 miles, I am ready to move on. Too many small problems like the visors that keep breaking, the cracked plastic on the back hatch, and a couple expensive repairs that should not have been necessary. I take good care of my vehicles and do all the maintenance. It's just some poor build quality starting to show through. Almost every 2004 Explorer has had these same problems and Ford will not acknowledge them nor address them. It's too bad because other than these annoyances it really is a nice vehicle.

I bought a 2004 Ford Explorer NBx flex fuel 4.0
I love my Explorer this is the third Explorer I have bought and all three have had a little engine noise but all three of them have never left me stranded except for a few flat tires I have replaced the belt pulleys on this one and air compressor pulley and seemed to quite down the engine noise a bit my last was a1999 and it made motor noise for the three years I had it but never affected the preformance at all seems to be same with this one I have made a few repairs to all three of them but nothing real major fuel pump on the 2000 and 1999 models . But this 2004 seems great to me. I love the feeling of the way it handles on freeway I feel very safe .but in my 1999 I was afraid of the way it was all over the freeway but this 2004 I feel so safe in it . The four wheel drive works great I do think I will be replacing the wheel barring soon . Other than that I think it's doing ok so far

Ford Tough
The 2004 Explorer XLS is a great deal for the money. The new body style brought in with the 2000 model adds much more stability and roominess to the vehicle. I am still surprised by its great turning radius, particularly for its size. Sound system is great. Cabin in surprisingly quiet cruising through town, but there is noise when driving on the freeway, as it isn't very aerodynamic. There does need to be an improvement upon gas mileage - the Explorer's Japanese competitors are much better in this area.
Exceptional Explorer
Great vehicle, fun to drive on all roads and in all weather. Wonderful utility, best utility of any mfg in type class. Good service experience at dealer. Reasonable economy for this type vehicle given what is available on the market today. Has Class II hitch and tow package, handles trailers very well. Great brakes - lasted 50,000 miles before replacing pads on front, rears still on. Great overall vehicle and we checked all makes prior to buying this Ford product.
