New GM is Just Public Relations Gimmick

I have a 2014 Volt and really like the car. However, I question GM and its dealers' commitment to customer satisfaction in general and the Volt specifically. In December, 2014 GM issues a "Customer Satisfaction Program" which it also calls a "recall" regarding a liftgate strut. Six months after the program starts GM dealers say they need at least 2 weeks to get the part. The GM Recall Center says part is "back ordered." Most likely GM and its dealers (ie. Koons in Northern VA) do not stock the part because they want to make it harder for people to get the repair made. This is the "New GM" folks!

So many flaws

Where do I begin? Well for the pros: It's got great fuel economy, great acceleration, detailed results on fuel economy, great cargo space, and gets me from point A to point B...but with many problems. The cons: 1) the interior design is incredibly lacking, especially when it comes to visibility. The side airbags by the front driver and passenger side windshield obstruct the view so much, that you have to constantly lean in and back just to see if anyone or anything is there before proceeding. I've had many instances where I've almost hit a person because of that thick obstruction. 2) the transmission can't just start, you have to start up the entire car just to get your controls working or wanting to charge your phone, access the radio, climate, etc. All those instruments (except the climate) can work without having the car run if you start up the car and turn it off, which is just an extra unnecessary step. Plus, with the car off and the instruments running, it only runs for a couple minutes until it completely powers down, which makes you start it up again, turn it off, and do the task you want. 3) The touchscreen isn't very responsive and sometimes requires more than one press of a single button to get a task running, which completely freaks out the entire system. I've had my car brought in for servicing, updated, maintained and whatnot, and still does the same. and 4) The most annoying part of this car which I see as a severe flaw in design is the key fob. The car is keyless entry and detects when the key is near to get going. Now, if the key can't be detected, no worries! You have a backup physical key which can unlock the doors, and a strangely placed keyhole in the center of the dash to start your car. But wait, there are many worries. You would think the point of a physical backup would get the job done. Instead, THE CAR STILL NEEDS TO DETECT THE SIGNAL OF THE KEY. What's the point of a physical backup if a signal is still needed to start you car or prevent the alarms from going off?! The backup should be used when the battery within the key has died, not to make an unnecessary two step process!!! It seems that when the key fob is too cold, it just stops working, but as soon as it's heated up again, it detects its signal. I've looked this up on many forums and even reset my car, but nothing has fixed it. This car could've been a great car, but Chevy definitely missed some key backup and safety points (pun intended) that overcomes a lot of the greatness behind driving the car.

A Smooth Quiet Ride for 40 Miles

W. Kurt, 01/26/2020

The Chevy Volt is a wonderful driving experience. It is smooth quiet and quick. The added battery mass gives the car a weight balance that lets it corner like it's on rails. After 40 miles the performance is the still great, but the quiet goes away when the gas engine starts charging the battery. This is an ideal car for daily short commutes within the electric range. The all electric battery range is from a low cold weather 25 miles to 50 miles in warm weather. After that using the gas engine allows a range of 400 miles. The few minor warranty issues, I had, were covered under the 8 year 80,000 mile Voltec warranty. The liquid cooled batteries have shown no degradation in the 5 years I've owned it. The Facebook Chevy Volt Owners Group indicates that my experience is typical, with one member claiming no degradation in range after 400,000 miles. The hatchback and folding rear seats allow you to carry some large loads. It also works well as a little camper, with rear seats folded, offering an air conditioned room with an electric plug in site. If you want the experience of driving a luxury electric vehicle, for a very low price, the Chevy Volt is for you.

very inexpensive to maintain -traded for Cadillac

If your daily drive is less than 40 miles, you can't beat the MPG. Plug in for 4 hours at 240V or 9 hours at 120V and the first gallon of fuel isn't used. Real world electric range varies greatly with temperature, speed and hills. When driving for a week at temperatures around freezing I only got 25 miles per charge. Driving normally with quick startups and staying at speed limits a charge usually lasts about 35/37 miles before the engine starts. Just driving in town with stop & go traffic and temp around 70F I get around 42 miles on a charge. Lifetime 234 mpg right now since I haven't been far from home lately. Back seat is small for tall people but under 6 feet tall haven't complained. UPDATE - Traded car for Cadillac ELR (Luxury coupe with Volt underpinning) in Feb. 2016 mainly for improvement of travel conveniences.
