Safety, quality, sport & luxury without the emblem
This SUV lacks nothing! The emblem is something many buyers pay for, but this vehicle offers all of the power, sport and luxury options without the ostentatious emblem. We are still searching for a forgotten option or want but I think Chevy has it covered :)

Do Not Buy the 2018 Suburban Transmission Problems
Warning ... do not purchase a used 2018 Suburban. The GM transmissions have catastrophic problems. I just replaced the transmission in this Suburban for $6,000.00 ... complete failure. Look around on line and you will see the issues related to this vehicle. The Suburban I own has just under 100K miles and has never pulled a trailer. Broke down when I was 300 miles from home with no warning. On Star didn't even catch it until it had already broken down. Had to pay an additional $500 for transportation to return the vehicle to my hometown. Was without the suv for 30 days. It is my understanding that the Suburban, Tahoe, Silverado 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra 1500 all have the same transmissions. Stay away from these vehicles.
Great full-size SUV with some issues
This is a “long-term” review. Bought it used at ~40k miles from a rental company in 2020. 5.3 Liter V8 with flex fuel capability, rear wheel drive. This vehicle can tow and haul almost anything, including large family + luggage on long road trips, comfortably. If you go past 80mph on the interstate, the chassis on frame construction + suspension struggles a little bit vs. a unibody construction (that smaller SUVs or minivans have which shows in some vibrations especially with wind speeds or uneven roads. Running E85 ethanol fuel drops mpg by 3-4 mpg, but also provides 380 horsepower vs. 355 horsepower when running regular fuel. The AFM cylinder deactivation increases mpg to 22-23+ mpg on the freeway when using regular unleaded. Luggage space and passenger space is very good and this is a decent car if you want “a lot of car” for the money. However, some maintenance issues. The oil change interval is 7,500 miles, regardless of that, I’d recommend changing it every 6 months or 5,000 miles – very detrimental to keep the AFM system from destroying the lifters. Also, when AFM is active, oil consumption increases (I guess that’s why they put a 8 quart oil pan on this engine) + a good quality oil filter. The air filter for the engine requires several unnecessary steps and screws and removal of a metal bar above it – not quick maintenance friendly, same as the passenger air filter inside the glove box – instead of simple latches, GM engineers reverted to several screws and then several wires are running in front of the latch where you can replace the filter – again not very maintenance friendly and probably that’s why the previous owner (rental company) has never replaced it. The 12V starter battery is wedged between the back portion of the hood and the firewall, which makes its replacement very tedious and can only be removed sideways. If you ever provide a jump for another vehicle, mounting the clamps is almost impossible. This is just less than optimal design in my opinion. Once you reach 100k miles, and you replace the spark plugs, be prepared for major aggravation (or a lot of labor cost if you pay someone else to do this for you) – the plugs 1-6 are somewhat easy to remove but 7 and 8 towards the firewall are impossible to access. You have to take both front wheels off and go through the wheel housing to access them, after taking off several heat shield components. Good luck when attempting this yourself, may need some Advil afterwards. The pinnacle of idiotic engineering (or maybe just using sub-par quality parts)is a $300 dollar part, that will fail around 60k miles to 80k, miles (mine failed at 81k miles) – the torque converter. Notorious for failure with the 6-speed transmission (that is otherwise rock-solid). According to a local transmission shop, they have seen hundreds of those fail in all kinds of GM vehicles, that have the 6-speed transmission (due to the torque converter failing). After this was replaced with a re-manufactured part (that hopefully won’t have the same issue) and flushing the transmission and replacing the fluid (to get all the metal shavings out) + re-programming it, everything was fine. Other small issues such as the glove box handle failed (replaced with a part from Amazon), the plastic cover outside the window fell off and had to be re-glued, the chrome strips and rubber seals may fall off as well and have to be re-attached or replaced, etc. The on-board entertainment system stopped functioning in 2024 (car was 5 years old at the time) and the touch screen is just not working any longer. A disconnecting of the 12V starter battery fixed the issue temporarily, but has since re-occurred – thankfully there are other adjustment buttons and knobs as a workaround for the radio. Besides all those issues, the lifters haven’t failed yet (however, they’re making definitely some noise) but a regular oil change will hopefully prevent premature lifter failure that is very prevalent on those AFM equipped engines. For what it’s worth, it’s still a good family and cargo hauler and with regular maintenance and dealing with some minor and also some major issues, I would say it is generally OK. However, I may consider another brand for the replacement purchase, if it becomes relevant in the next few years. Quality of the parts is definitely not what I expected in this price class. Or serviceability / maintenance friendliness – the car is not designed for easy maintenance.
