Bought brand new, June, 2008. Two months later the motor on the A/C blower failed. Three months after that the fuel pump failed and left me stranded on a busy highway. Six months later the transmission failed while on a family vacation. BMW highway assistance is worthless. You get put on hold for 5-15 minutes (if they answer at all) then are told they can send a tow truck within 1 1/2 hours. Overall a disappointing experience for an expensive vehicle.
2008 BMW 4.8i X5 Sport Pkg at 15 Yrs, 80K
I keep this curious summary: My “obsolete” BMW still drives better than a lot of new cars, noting that I keep up the most basic maintenance - brakes, tires, etc. Continuing Update: 1) Safety is very good (not mediocre), and 2) We bought this car new and it’s still not much over 80Kmi. Not driven so much (2 other cars, a pandemic and 2 road bikes). The X5 is a heavy car, and that produces a refined ride that continues to be top flight. Get that out of your Volvo or Subaru! We replaced the "smart cable" from battery to frontend of car a couple years ago - $800. We just replaced the alternator - an $1,800 experience. You must keep the electrical system working perfectly or else this car just stops - wherever, calamity. We have one chronic engine oil leak - the right side timing cover gasket (on of the big V8), but we just live with some ooze to the garage floor since it's almost $4,000 to repair. It’s simply not worth the $4K to replace it if oil consumption is only 1 qt a year! The main squawk at this point is the passenger front seat pressure sensor for the SRS system. Costs upwards to $2K to fix and does almost nothing (it was a child protection feature when it worked, but now failed after only 14 years of almost zero use - no kids, and the car is / was driven solo 95% of the time). So we just live with (ignore) the display startup Warning and dash idiot lights. The front passenger seatbelt works just fine of course. Who cares about the airbag in the event it won’t (and we’re not even sure about that). Bridgestone Dueler runflats remain nearly as good as the original Dunlops. But prices continue to climb. The OEM spec tires (20" RF W-rated) run $1,900 at Discount Tire. And we are only getting maybe 3 years out of every 4-tire replacement, even though we only put less than 5,000 miles per year on this car. Arizona summers dry out tires long before minimum tread depth appears. Exterior and interior looks almost as good as original excepting driver's seat leather which is starting to show wear. But overall, the interior is looking OK after 15 years. Better than a buddy’s 5-year-old Outback! I still expect to keep this car to at least 100 Kmi. If repairs do not force their way in, we are hoping for a "few more good years" of little cost beyond gas and insurance. So far, so good.

Second Thoughts
When I purchased this X5 it was great. Since then I have had 3 GPS systems replaced, the AC replaced. Best of all it has left we stranded twice. Could not even open the lift gate or glove box to get roadside assistance number. For a car of this price the quality is terrible. If I wanted this reliability I would of purchased a Chrysler. Kia makes better cars than this. The worst part is that I have had many BMW's. From a M5 to a 7-Series to a 3-Series. This is the first BMW that I have had a problem with.
Depreciation is my friend
I bought my x5 as a toy about a year ago with 104,000 miles on it. I paid less for it than the original owner paid in sales tax when they bought it new. I'd heard all the stories about poor reliability but didn't care, it was a super nice v8 SUV for CHEAP so I turned it into a funny off road x5 with tubular bumpers and a winch and loud mud tires. I took off the mufflers. The whole thing started as a joke. After a year? I've off roaded it quite a few times. It does great as long as I'm careful about the lack of ground clearance. It sounds glorious. It accelerates with authority. The interior looks nearly new. It draws attention because of the unusual off road mods. It has been rock solid mechanically (a 2 drops per day leak at the main seal that's it). It was meant to be an unreliable hot mess of a toy/project car but turned out to be my wife's favorite car (we have 8 currently). She drives it nearly everyday and we take it on frequent road trips. It currently has 116,000 miles and counting. Maybe I got lucky? Update: 126,000 miles and it is still a joy. I've replaced the battery and the water pump. That's it. I've now bought another older BMW with the same 4.8 V8, a 650i with a manual transmission.

Did I buy a lemon? Tastes bitter!
Bought X5 a year ago tomorrow and will be taking to dealership again. This time a repeat 4x4 and DSC warning. Last time fault blamed on us leaving a battery powered XM radio plugged into the receptacle inside the armrest storage that caused the battery level to drop?! Today same problem while driving on the highway. Can't wait to hear next excuse. Have taken car in at least 5 times for loud noise when taking out of park. In December Parking Brake would not disengage while 700 miles from home. BMW Assist could not tell us how to manually disengage brake but wanted to drag it onto a flatbed. Dealer told us how. Start-Off Assist jerks back on flat ground!! This is normal? Otherwise great car.
