Have the same problem with my 2008. Put a new starter in today. Not the problem. The guy who towed my vehicle suggested some type of relay problem. With a 1992 you may want to check the wiring to the starter for corrosion or bare/worn wire(s). Be sure and disconnect battery before messing with the terminals on starter. Another possibility is the neutral safety switch (NSS). Won't allow the car to ... Read More

intermitten starting problem replaced fuel pump still the same, any ideas?
Well when I go to start my Jeep it turns over kinda rough then it starts but begins to idle rough till the check engine light comes on. Any suggestions??
being in your situation, i would go to a local parts place & pick up a haynes manual for it. the average price is roughly 20 bucks. it has how to for the shadetree mechanic. with basic hand tools & time/patience you should be able to get it running for her. let me know, good luck
The water pump is pretty easy to replace (Easy on an inline 6 cylinder 4.0) Take both the fan shroud and the electric fan off. Should be 4 screws. Then you have to loosen the power steering pump so you can free the belt. Then there are 5 bolts on the water pump. Remove those then clean up the surface to prepare it for the new one. Make sure it is ... Read More
Help. I purchased a 92 jeep Cherokee for my grand daughter since her parents could not afford to buy jer a car. I am 66 years old and on a fixed income as well as being in poor health, but she could not hope to get a scholarship to college without transportation. This jeep had multiple issues which i repaired. The reason it was sold to me for $500 was a ... Read More

I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 L - 242 with 208k miles. Recently I have noticed that my jeep has been smoking a lot. When I look under it, all the smoke is coming from the catalytic converter. It looks like steam more or less, but has a slight smell to it. There is nothing leaking onto it, all the smoke/steam is coming from within it. All of my gauges ... Read More
Try changing your crankshaft position sensor first. This senses crankshaft position (tdc) during each engine revolution. The pcm uses this information to to control ignition timing and fuel injection synchronization.
It could be any of these problems: 1. emissions system not functioniong properly 2. fault in the fuel or electrical systems 3. faulty secondary ignition system (cracked sparkplug insulator or faulty plug wires) 4. vacuum leak at the throttle body, intake manifold or vacuum hoses. 5. valves sticking. 6. crossed plug wires- check the firing order. 7. valve timing incorrect.
I changed the pcm (engine control module). My mechanic advised that he got another jeep into his shop and was advised that the jeep would run if the center connection of his pcm was held up. seems that the connection would loosen up and cause the jeep to idle rough and then shut off. he advised that the circuit board in the pcm may be cracked and changed it. so far ... Hey, have you found the answer to this problem yet! I have the same issues with my 96'GC, I've replaced the same parts as you. I do get a trouble light from the Crank shaft position sensor. It reads out a intermitant reading of piston 1. I also have violent back fires ever so often. Think I may have to replace my PCM.
I have the same exact problem with my 97 tsi. I replaced the cap, rotor, crank position sensor, cam position sensor, fuel pump, sparkplug wires, sparkplugs, ignition coil 2 times, air filter, motor mounts and it still giving me the same problem.
crankshaft position sensor, see post 2103.Mine never threw a code.(check engine light)
I have an ’89 Cherokee and I’m experiencing a similar problem. It starts fine and runs fine for about 15-30 minutes then starts “cutting out,” similar to the engine being turn off and then immediately back on. As long as I keep the RPMs up (1 foot on the brake and 1 on the gas), it doesn’t die (but still cuts out). But, if I let the RPMs dip below 1K ... Read More
I have a 92 Jeep Cherokee with 275K miles that I have owned since it was new. It runs great, but recently it has totally cut off 2 times while driving, the 1st time I was able to restart in neutrall in traffic, the 2nd it would not restart and had to be towed. The dealer had it for a week and got no spark the first day. Day two of ... Read More
I have never flushed a radiator, but I recently installed a new one. The plug is on the passenger side. If you take the grill off you will see it. Oh, don't take it all the way out; just a few turns and the coolant should flow through the plug. If you take it all the way out, no big deal, you'll get it back in with a little patience.
IF your '92 is the same as my '95, there is a pet-cock drain thingy behind the front grill. On my '95, I have to remove about 12 screws to remove the plastic grill, and the drain thingy is behind that... However, it might be easier to just disconnect the bottom radiator hose.
I blew a head gasket and need to flush the radiator but can't find the drain plug. Can someone please tell me where to find this. Thanks a ton
My first automobile as a driver was a 1992 Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with about 140,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, less than a year after I got it I had an accident and since the value was so low, it was "totaled." I got a 1993 Cherokee Sport (this time without 4x4, unfortunately) last August with only 84k miles on it. Although the great I6 engine still runs true, I miss some ... Read More
