Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Brake Problems

I'm having similar issues with my 05 Sierra 1500 4x4, extended cab with the 5.3L and 49,500 miles. My ABS is coming on when pulling up to a stop - usually under 5 mph. I don't have the light or any codes. I replaced the rotors and brake pads with new. I checked the calipers to see if they were extending and they were. The only difference I saw was that ... There is a check valve in the fuel line. If the valve fails, it allows gas to drain back to the tank. If that's the case it would be hard starting till the fuel pump can pressurize the gas in the line. Usually takes up to 10 seconds. A good way to test this is when starting leave the key in the "on" position for 10-15 seconds. If your truck starts ... Read More

FUEL FILTERS.... FUEL FILTERS... FUEL FILTERS Changing your fuel filters regularly will save your fuel pump.

The only thing else I can suggest is to have your fuel pressure and fuel pressure regulator checked.

  • Re: 2001 GMC 1500 sierra initial start problems [jneal]

Written by: seannoo on Nov 6, 2006 7:28:19 AM

I considered that, but it runs fine after it is started. the thing is that, previously, the pump would prime the system for a few seconds every time I turned the ignition, but now it never does. I think there has to be something to "tell" it to prime the system, that is no longer functioning. Does that sound likely? Do you know if that is possible?

  • Re: 2001 GMC 1500 sierra initial start problems [seannoo]

Written by: jneal on Nov 5, 2006 10:38:17 PM

The buzzing sound you used to hear was your fuel pump running. If you no longer hear it when turning the ignition key to "ON" position your pump is on the way out.

My truck generally will not start on the first try. There used to be a buzzing sound that would last for about 3 seconds when I would turn the ignition on, but it no longer does that sound and I am sure the problems are linked. I don't recall the name of the rotors. The guy at the parts shop is a friend of mine and he fixed me up. The Pads were Wagner Thermoquiets. They're not as quiet as the factory pads (some squealing when cold) but they also stop which is a plus! Pedal feels much better. About 80% of what a normal pedal feels like which is a huge improvement.

I would initially look at the pads/rotors. I've had a lot of problems with the brakes on my '03 and the final cure seems to be all new aftermarket pads/rotors. The OEM pads have done nothing but glaze up and the rotors have corroded very badly.
