I have a 1998 Ford Ranger and periodically I will hear I whining noise coming from what I think is the power steering pump. Furthermore, when the whining stops (after about 10 seconds) the engine will bog down and almost stall (lasts for about 5 seconds). Any ideas? One thought I had was that the relief valve inside the pump is sticking closed which may cause the engine to bog down ... Read More

Im having the same problem on the same model. i just replaced the high pressure hose from the steering pump (had a pinhole leak) and as soon as i did that the seals on the rack and pinion gave out.
About 20,000 miles ago my ranger blew the rack and pinion seals both sides. I am now faced with the same problem. I wonder what is wrong. Is possible that the pump is over pressuring?

Apparently some models of the 1998 series do have distributors. When the Ford Dealers (2) were through with working on it they couldn't tell us what the problem was, maybe it was this, maybe it was that, but after over $2,400 worth of work we gave up on Ford. Took it to a little local mechanic who thought he could fix it, but no luck. Now it is with another mechanic ... Read More
My 1998 Ford Ranger is in the shop again! It stalls and now it won't start. If 'brakes lites work sometimes when pressing hard' usually means the electrical brake switch is going bad. It is under the dash, on the assembly above the brake pedal. Pedal movement actuates it. Let's not forget what happened to the economy, though. In 1998, the stock market was sky-high, tech industry was booming and people were buying vehicles. I honestly don't think I would have saved that much in 1998 had I bought a Ranger instead. I'm sure the deal on your 2002 Ranger was influenced by the stock market crash and 9/11 - two things which didn't affect my purchase. But even if ... Read More

I just bought a subscription to AllData for my 2000 Ranger XLT 4x4 Ext. cab. It is WELL WORTH the 25 bucks. Lieterally REAMS of info are available: TSB's, shop manual procedures, exploded diagrams, etc. Here is something interesting I am going to pursue with Ford. It appears they recommend replacing the 3.5 inch steel driveshaft with an ALUMINUM 4.0 inch version. The part number is: 1L5Z 4602 JM for the ... Read More
Because there are two different agencies that perform 2 different tests, Ranger people pick the worst ones and call them the truth. Of course, Tacoma people pick the best ones and call them the truth. And since neither party can convince the other one why one test is better than another (I still think offset crash tests are more real-life), the arguement is here to stay. What Ranger fans call "great ... Read More
You are looking in the wrong place for reliability data for Toyota trucks/Tacoma's. I don't know where you got this quote from?? There are clear charts and comments showing the reliability and problems with Toyota trucks/Tacoma trucks. As far as the Mazda not being number 2 in sales?? I would have to say its because there 10 Ford dealerships for every Mazda dealership, and Mazda doesn't offer the B series in ... Read More
You got me?? I just walked into a Ford Dealership in 1998 and went through the list for the Ranger. I did not want 4.10 because of MPG reasons and I wasn't going to tow anything heavy anyway.. The paperwork I got was a print out from the Dealership showing a 3.73 rearend ratio. Might they have pulled a fast one on me... maybe? I think the 4.0 SOHC was a ... Read More
i know exactly what you mean. it seems the toyota guys like to quote these magazine articles and such. but whenever a fact about the ranger's superiority over the tacoma in any category comes up, they totally ignore it. the big one being that the ranger has more stock power and torque, and it takes a $3000 piece of aftermarket equipment (may have toyota's name on it, but its still modifying ... At this point I don't even know why I'm wasting my time with you. Honestly. Toyota's 3.4 has been around since 1995. This engine is 7 years old and produces 190 horses and 220 lb/ft torque. Before Ford updated their 4.0, this engine made 160 horses and 220 lb/ft torque (SAME AS TACOMA) as well - pretty pitiful considering its .6 litre displacement advantage. So for the past 6 years, before ... Read More
My aluminum Transmission has be over hauled 2 times. First time was about 10k, and the second time was about 28k. I dont know if this to be true or not but I was told they had alot of TBS problems out of the 1998 model Rangers and they also discontinued the type of transmission we have in these 98 models. Doe anyone here know about this. Is there any f150 ... Read More
As this one Dealer here in Louisiana told me. After the 36,000/3 year waranty FORD has meet all obligations. (Meaning) F.U. Through my experience's with my Ranger and Taurus. I will never concider buying another Ford Product. My past experience's and troubles come back to the people whom are repairing our vechicle's have shown me poor craftmenship. Either they are simply retarded, or most of my experiences with them are intentional. ... Read More
I got my tranny fixed. But with this experience on the alumiun trannys aren't rebuildable. This was the 2nd time for my ranger and its mileage is at 28,000. The 1st time was at 10,000. Another thing I notice about these Ford Dealer Ships is the craftmenship of their mechanic's that work on our FORD'S. The mechanic's simply POOR. Some of these service dept's need a cleaning out of mechanic's who ... Read More
