Whenever I see a 1998- or later S10/S15 Chevrolet / GMC with problems, I attribute that to the vehicle being too new. There has not been enough time for routine maintenance to correct all the original GM factory defects, If a S10/S15 can be maintained for 15 years before the owner or owners gives up and isends ther S10/S15 to the auto salvage yard, the original GM problems have been fixed ... I think the long term trend in cars is to lessen required maintenance as much as possible. So my feeling is that the engineers have improved the seals so that there is little risk of failure by not using the AC. Plus as you say, the AC comes on with the defrost. Steve, Running the compressor is an issue in any automotive system. It may not be mentioned as most folks will use there defroster/defogger during the winter, and thus run the compressor. It may not be as big an issue with R134A, but was definitely an R12 issue. Most systems now days use very, very little refrigerant. As an example, the S10 series Blazer/pickup uses less than 28oz of R134A!

It will not harm your engine, BUT it can ruin you a/c by not running often. Its got the Use it or lose it policy. Your a/c system has lubrication oil mixed with and circulated by the refrigerant. The seals can dry up and crack, especially the front shaft seal on the a/c compressor, causing all the refrigerant to leak out.

  • Re: 1998 Chevrolet Blazer A/C [yourangellady]

Written by: jlflemmons on Jun 6, 2010 9:20:23 PM

Has nothing to do with harming the engine. But you should run the ac or defroster at least once a month for a minute or so to keep the seals lubricated and the oil moving across the moving parts of the compressor.

  • Re: 1998 Chevrolet Blazer A/C [yourangellady]

    Written by: Stever@Edmunds on Jun 6, 2010 8:02:48 PM

In the old days, you were supposed to run the AC a few minutes a month all year round. As I recall, this was to keep the seals flexible (in the compressor I guess). Nowadays the AC will kick on when you run the defroster to dehumidify the air, so you shouldn't find anything in your manual about running the AC. And I don't see why never running the AC would ... Whoever told your girlfriend that is nuts. AC takes power from the engine just like the alternator, the power steering and the transmission and wheels. The AC is no different. That's what the engine is there for. Engines in cars made without AC do just fine. There is no way that not taking energy from the engine is going to hurt it.

Three plug wires each side. That fourth wire you see on the passenger side goes to the coil. If they are the original wires, they will be numbered. Otherwise you need to know that the cylinders are, front to back, drivers side 1,3,5, and passengers side 2,4,6. If you don't have a manual, look at the wires on the old cap before you take them off and make a diagram.

Common problem and many stores carry the card at approx $50. if required.

Hey Kevin, My 1998 Chevy Blazer has been doing this for the last 5 days. Man, I have been to several auto-electrical shops and have replaced the flasher twice. Your explanation has been the best and makes the most sense of all. Just when I had reached the end of my rope. Thanks for the knot. I'll get back with you to let you know how it worked out. Peace out. ... Read More

I have a 1998 Jimmy that has the same problem with the noisy signal. I think the noise is coming from a flasher switch behind the Glove Box on Passenger side. How do you get to it or do you know of a site with an illustration for location and part? Thanks.dec

Hi all, Last week as I was driving my 1998 Chevy Blazer, I noticed a strange smell that I assumed was coming from outside. However, as I continued down the freeway, I noticed that smoke was coming from the car. At first I could not locate its origin, but when I looked down, it was coming from the driver's seat!! I immediately pulled over, and looked under the seat, from the ... Read More

I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy that had the same problem. I searched and searched for the answer, and found it late one night. The fix is relatively simple. When the turn signal is turned on little metal shavings rub off. These shavings get into the lubricant around the connectors and end up bridging the gap between circuits. So in essence, the turn signal switch is partially connected, which is why ... Read More

Re: mssg 932 (the last message) I got the truck back from the mechanic today. He replaced the "combination switch" which controls the flasher module for the directionals. This stopped the intermittent blinker noise. Cost: $300 parts and labor. (Value of not having to hear the blinker noise ALL the time while driving: priceless!) He cleared the airbag code and we will wait to see if the idiot light comes back ... Read More

I have a 98 Blazer and it's just been one problem after another this year. I had to replace the fuel pump (the Blazer died on me at a stoplight), also replaced the thermostat this year and now the biggie - replaced the engine. It had a cracked engine block, there was exhaust blowing into the radiator. So, I'll be looking into a new car soon! Oh, and last year I ... Read More
