Cadillac XLR vs. Mercedes-Benz SL

  • Cadillac must go over the top to compete. [jlmartin]

Im disappointed but not surprised that our Cadillac XLR has been cancelled as of February 2009. I've enjoyed Cadillac convertibles for 34 years, ever since Grandma drove me to the beach with the top down way back in 1975. It was the weekend after she bought her new Eldorado and my first ride in a convertible. Eight years later I turned 16 and Grandma gave me the Eldorado. Currently own an ... Read More

I do get your point, we simply do not agree. For my comparative evaluation Mercedes-Benz's SL550 should offer more than an interior that looks like a coupe, a nice coupe, but so common and familiar. And again when you option the SL550 to the level of Cadillac's XLR, the SL550's interior becomes a sea of buttons and for my requirements that does bode of a better interior design, but less. Mercedes-Benz’s ... Read More

Is Cadillac's Image Dying and Does Anyone Care?

Short answer: no. GM has decided that the CTS should be a 300C with a better interior; the SRX, STS, and DTS are slated to die at the end of the decade, and the replacement for the latter two will be a rebodied Holden sedan; the Escalade will continue to to be a gadgetologized Tahoe (to borrow a Rockyism); and the XLR will continue to be an overpriced angular body on ... Her is some interesteing data from July 2007. According to the industry examiners at CNW Research, Cadillac’s fortunes appear to be slipping away at the margins. In the firm’s July installment of their Retail Automotive Summary, their Aspirational Index (which judges a brand’s attractiveness to consumers) reveals that Cadillac’s rising star is beginning to falter. In the mid-Nineties, the marque rated only a 4 on a 10 point scale. With the ... Read More

I'm all for your enthusiasm but it should be noted the current CTS is on the same platform as the old one. I'm not sure about your theory that the first gen car wasnt meant to have a V series. I would say Cadillac planned to do it from the start and they did a good job for a first effort. The CTS-V had a few flaws but for $50k it ... Read More

I've been reading some of the initial reports of this car since it broke cover. All I have to say is: "Whoa!" The old CTS-V was pretty much an afterthought. The original CTS was first penned in 1999 and by the time it shipped to dealers in January '03, it was considered Cadillac's last chance to be relavent, not the start of various cars based on this one. So when a ... Read More

"I never said they wouldn't. You asked me for reasons why some wouldn't buy the CTS and get the C instead and I gave you some. What's the problem? " I believe someone else asked for those reasons. I wouldnt but the C class so I don't need any reasons why its supposedly superior. The C class isnt superior on any objective level. Not that its not a nice car. "The ... Read More

Since its been on sale the 2008 CTS has outsold the C class, TL, IS, A4 and G35. I would say the car s doing just fine and will continue to do so....Read some of the consumer reviews right here on this site, many owners have traded in European cars. Would you be so kind to post a link to back this up? I did a little research and this is ... Read More

Cadillac will do best to market cars that are not direct competition with BMW or Mercedes. If Cadillac can build something different, but American, then it should sell. Cadillac will not be able to sell something very expensive. The XLR does not sell like the Mercedes SL's. = = = While I agree with statements 1 & 2, I disagree with #3. If Caddy does build something unique & American, I ... Read More

That's because instead of the same old trite nonsense that they had been doing before, the CTS was a fresh idea from the ground up, designed by automobile enthusiasts, tested and driven by American and European professionals with accolades. The Catera, technically wasn't even a Cadillac persay. It was a cosmetically engineered car imported from Germany (Opel). It was a mediocre version of the car at best, which may have been ... ...that Cadillac doesn't think it is already back on top and starts to slack-off again. Cadillac's rennaisance began with the 1992 Seville and Eldorado. It still has a ways to go before it is truly world-class. Good signs: Cadillac CTS is a quantum leap over the abyssmal Cimmaron and mediocre Catera. The 2008 CTS looks even better. Hope to see it in the metal soon! Cadillac Escalade is still the King ... Read More

My local dealer had an XLR on the showroom floor last time I was there. The interior did not seem that much better than a basic Cadillac. At the same time I looked at the 2007 SRX interior. It does look better than the 2006 interior, but mainly because there is more wood. The plastics have been replaced with something that looks like leather, and has stitching. The 2008 CTS looks ... I was defending the Lincoln MKZ and MKS against the competition. The Navigator OTOH, is a nice SUV, like I said but it lacks elegance, refinement and isn't as good as the Escalade or GL 450. The "Old and Tired" gas guzzling 5.4 V-8 was a embarrassment engine for ford to use. It has 300 hp. but feels more like 200 hp. The Navigator, does have a few features not found ... Read More
