I have a 1997 Audi A6 which won't start. The problem is that when you turn the key in the ignition all the lights come on and then go out as usual but the engine doesn't turn or starter motor make any sounds. It's as if the ignition has been disconnected from the engine. Also the remote central locking has stopped working. Has anyone come across this problem before??
I had one of these -- I'll give you some input: 1. What should I look out for that is specific to this model/year/engine? Nothing that I know of -- the 4.2 is thirsty, but the thing is powerful and smooth and sounds great. I had brake disk issues with mine which Audi fixed by replacing the entire brake system -- otherwise it only has a 5speed auto which TODAY would ... Read More
I was happily driving my 1997 audi A6 quattro SW when at a stoplight, without any warning the car didn't engage the transmission anymore, the engine runs fine, the shift goes in all positions but it doesn't engage..... Is it the transmission? I had a mechanic over the phone tell me it's a 3000 USD job to replace the transmission, too much definitely for a car with 100K but I was ... Read More
The previous gen, of the A6, had a production run from 1997 through 2004 (8 years.) We are now into year 4 for the current A6. I had hoped for a freshening (got it.) I had hoped for some increases in content/options/features (got that, too.) I assumed the 3.2 would be goosed, turbo charged, replaced (er, re-engineered) to get more HP and torque (apparently we don't get that -- yet) and ... Read More
I own a 1997 A6 quattro with 115k miles. It's been sitting in my garage since last April and the battery has died. I can install the new battery but the radio will be in SAFE mode. I don't have the radio car with the code. Is there any way to reset the radio without going back to a dealer? There is no Audi dealer anywhere near Poughkeepsie. Last time I ... Read More
The only more or less official data is 265HP. A 10HP boost. The torque does not rise. There have been several less official statements (perhaps just rumors) that there will be a more powerful V6. The 3.2, with the typical conservative Audi bi-turbo treatment would easily match the engine that is in the 335 and 535. If Audi does not rise to the challenge, I would argue they will HAVE to ... The A6 is the quietest of the bunch (including the A8), it also is both ... Read More
Selling England by the Pound -- Genesis. You win the cupie doll, Pat! Here in Cincinnati, the new generation of BMW's with that spanky new "35" twin turbo engine are rolling out -- at this point, the 335 sedan and coupes are RWD, but already the 328 is offered with AWD and next year the X drive option will be added for about $1900. It promises to be a brisk seller. ... Read More
Back in the days when smoking (in a car) was even done, a friend of mine -- a smoker -- would kid me and say "Mark gets a new car every time the ash tray gets full." Since I am not a smoker, I only related to this comment in a symbolic way. My friend, now not a smoker (and I never permitted him to smoke in my cars in any ... Read More
I believe the power column was avail elsewhere. I wonder what they were thinking since my 1997 A8 had this, as did my 2000 and 2001 A6's. Save a little money perhaps? Yet, I hardly miss it -- I rarely changed the setting even when it was power assisted. I am at least pleased that my manual wheel can be both tilted and telescoped and am nearly shocked when I note ... Read More
. . .rich folks vs really rich folks. One group of rich folks has good income, some wealth and decent cash flow, they are usually under 40. They drive the Audi, BMW and Mercedes high five and low six figure cars, if they are the more gregarious types (not that there is anything wrong with that.) The really rich folks seem to drive nice, but oddly inexpensive or older versions of ... Read More
Appropos of our recent discourse on the merits of oil change interval frequencies, I thought that the article below might prove illuminating as regards Audi and Volkswagen engines, and other makes as well. In light of the observations detailed in this article, the wisdom of 10,000 mile oil change intervals continues to evade me. This is particularly true as regards the majority of the so-called "synthetic oils" like Castrol, which in ... Read More

My 2005 A6 3.2 has now passed 6,000 miles. It is getting better all the time in every way I can imagine to share with you. It has two "issues": #1 I make a lease payment and I get a new Advanced Key "start engine" switch (I am on switch #4). Brake rotors have been practically THE ONLY issue I have ever had with our 28 Audis since 1977. My 2000+2001 A6 4.2's combined had the rotors replaced 9 times (free). My 2003 allroad was turned in with 46,000 miles on it and original everything (insofar as the brakes were concerned.) My 2005 A6, at 2,000 miles has the best brakes of any Audi I have ever had and may have the ... Read More
The general acceleration of the new A6 is decent -- if not awe inspiring. The allroad was (it still is, it just isn't mine anymore) much more powerful from a dead stop (remember 6 speed manual, turbo engine). The allroad was very quick, the A6 is not a dog, but it is "less urgent." The engine sounds muted but it makes a nicer, more refined sound than the 2.7T (way better ... Read More
In any current car from any of the LPS companies (BMW ONLY excluded) the only choice is an auto. I fully expect some "tip" lag from the Audi. I also expected it from the Infiniti. This is different from saying I "like it" or I "want it" -- I do know how to somewhat to mostly mitigate it. I didn't want a BMW 5 series x or non-x. The US transmissions ... Read More
I am not anti-Audi, or anti-Audi's new A6. I am disappointed with Audis go to market strategy insofar as it apparently affected me with respect to the "value proposition" or TOC (total ownership cost -- and based on the Business Week article I was interviewed for, NOT alone in this regard). Indeed despite my newfound affection for the Infiniti M35X, I would have paid [a little bit] more for the Audi ... Read More
My Audi dealer has a fully tricked out A6 (BLACK) on their showroom floor -- front and rear spoiler, ground effects, tinted windows, special wheels, tail pipe extentions and fuzzy dice (oops, scratch the dice). I believe it [the Infiniti M35x] is 6.6 to 60mph. And, I believe TECHNICALLY, the Audi is 7.1 to 100kph. A nit? Perhaps. For the life of me, I can't figure out why you would let your outgoing SLine A6 2.7T with a 5spd tip, offer up 6.4 seconds and replace the car with one that comes in at 7.1 seconds and, generally speaking, costs a bit more, comparably equipped. Moreover, ... Read More

Run away from this scenario. The 2.7T is a great performing engine -- the 2001 may have some parts issues that, although probably able to be CPO'd to 100K or 2 years, still makes a newer car less money. The brake rotors on the 2001's are notorius for warping. The 2.7T engine will need a serpentine belt replacement by 60K miles (this is a four figure job). Around 60K miles, maintenance ... Read More

Big diff in handling, little diff in ride quality. Bought a 2000 A6 4.2 w/standard suspension but 17" wheel/tire option. ... Read More
. . .I personally don't mind the comparison talk on this thread -- specifically since our fellow contributor lexusguy continues to take the high-road and is attempting to appeal to our left-brain side. . . .I suspect that fans of Audi will not be influenced by the reliability scores of other brands. We all, I presume, want our cars to be more reliable. I discounted it until I looked up this table again, and apparently, it is bigger and longer. The same photo's are ... Read More
Anti-sway bars are engineered to reduce "body roll." They keep your vehicle flatter in the turns by transferring the pressure exerted on the outside wheels and applying opposite pressure on the inside wheels. In this way weight is more evenly applied to all four wheels, helping the vehicle stay more level with the road. Your car will corner "flatter" -- sometimes this is discussed using the term "body lean" (as in ... Read More

JK Ralph, at Northland Audi in Cincinnati, told me the 2002 A6 2.7T has a great deal of the look of a 2001 A6 4.2 -- flared front fenders, below the grill spoiler/air intake, etc. Now this tells me that it would be possible for the tire size to be 255 x 40 x 17. But, based on past experience with Audi's, they will probably have a somewhat smaller tire -- ... Read More

I still have no quarrel with your beliefs and your right to choose any vehicle that you want and are willing to vote for -- financially.
