Get the extended warranty! Well I just received the call from the dealership that my Volvo needs a new transmission ($4,500). Since the car is worth between $5-$6K that’s it. The car was a great car to drive. The car just was not reliable. After about 50-60K miles, every trip to the dealer was another $1K bill. I’m not talking consumables here but things that have never broken on any car I have ever owned. (a radio that would change stations every time the car hit a bump or the driver window that fell out of its track twice -after being fixed). There is nothing like driving a $40K car with duct tape holding your window up. My wife hates this car.

My Wife's Car

On Nov. 03 of 2001, my wife and I purchased or second Volvo. The first was a new 1988 740 Turbo (which still runs as well as the day we drove it home). As the '88 was approaching 14 years of age, we thought that a newer vehicle should transport both my wife and son. My wife spotted her soon-to- be-new car on the dealer's lot of Bozzani Volvo (Covina, CA) when, one day she dropped the '88 740 off for its usual servicing. As she was walking through the lot, she spotted the 2001 Cross Country (dark blue) and, in short, the rest is history. To those who report that the Volvo is the next best thing to a tank, we agree.

DO NOT Buy a used 2001 XC

I loved the design of these Cross Country wagons, very handsome, and the interior fit and finish is really beautiful in this car, but otherwise this think is an abosule MESS. Stay away at all costs. I have owned two other Volvos in the past, but this piece of junk has really soured me on Volvo. Its too bad...but I think the 2000 and 2001/2002 are really bad reliability wise. Ive had to replace the transmission, there is always something going wrong with the car, and its so crazy expensive to get it fixed, at least $500 to $1000 each time it goes to the shop. Im dumping this piece of junk before it eats my lunch.

Having my XC for almost 18mos now, it has been remarkably reliable and (almost) trouble free. The dealership (Volvo of Pleasanton, CA) has a fantastic sales staff and a horrible service department. I have had to actually argue with the Service Manager on 2 different occasions. I would recommend buying your Volvo in Pleasanton but having it serviced elsewhere. A previous review complained of front suspension problems, I experienced some of the same. However, it was repaired and has been fine since. The traction abilities of this car are remarkable! It's almost as though it's on rails. My only complaint is it's mediocre acceleration.

I'm a Gen-X'er and feel proud to drive what many may see as "your grandpa's wagon". I am here to tell you it is not! This is simply the most comfortable and safe feeling car you can buy. It looks like a muscular black panther ready to strike. Although a bit sluggish off the line, it performs well past 1st gear. This is the first car I can see never getting tired of.
