The S90 is Nice But The Quality Is Poor

As soon as I drove the 2018 S90, I was in love and I received compliments on the styling from strangers. However; within a few months after purchasing the S90, water entered the car in the passenger footwell whenever it rained. I took my car in many times to resolve the issue. After 3 years, 2 tries to replicate the issue with no success and 4 attempts to fix the issue, water continued to enter in the passenger footwell when it rained. The dealer tried many times to fix the issue, but they were unsuccessful. I engaged corporate Volvo but they sent me back to the dealer every time. No one tried to address the issue nor the fact that I was sold a defective S90. At this point, I will never buy another Volvo again. Volvo didn't care about my issue and would not try to resolve the issue.

A few months in - a lot to be desired

This updated review comes after 6 months of use. Let's be frank: The various tech bugs are just unbearable. Apple CarPlay did come via an OTA update but it is HORRIBLE on this screen. When you are using a map and in the view that has other apps visible (i.e., music controls and other widgets), the map becomes about the size of the original iPhone and is in Landscape orientation. Unsurprisingly it is not connected to the dashboard map, nor is it connected to the HUD... so it's really useless given how small it is on the screen. If you want to leave it in full screen mode, it isn't bad, but... the steering wheel controls don't seem to control music aside from the volume. The general feel is that the car was not designed to work with CarPlay and whatever genius signed off on this was probably hoping that it isn't used. There is so much more but I'll leave it there... Based on this alone, I will not buy another Volvo. Pivoting away from Apple CarPlay... The proximity sensors are WAY too sensitive when it comes to slamming on the brakes (while in reverse) and toggling the cameras on/off. The way the brakes engage will make you think you hit the thing you still had clearance with, and the cameras taking over the screen have a lot of lag and are glitchy. Very glitchy. The speed limit (signs) displayed in the car are frequently WRONG and at times one wrong sign will overlap the correct one (i.e., the dashboard will display TWO different signs at the same time). While pretty much everything about the tech is horrendous, the driving dynamics remain outstanding. The car feels very "confident" on both dry and wet surfaces. It handles bumpy (paved) roads quite well despite the low profile tires. It's not as quick as it should be, but it's an enjoyable drive. The seats are everything the hype promises.... so comfortable, supportive, adjustable, etc. This includes the rear seats as well; our kids only want to ride in this car now! The materials are all holding up well even with kids in and out all of the time. The interior is super quiet (little wind or road noise... no creaks/rattles). That's great because the the Harman Kardon stereo is outstanding. We have experienced zero mechanical issues and the paint is still pristine. The gas milage is as advertised. The technology should be gutted from the car (along with any/all Volvo senior leaders that support it) because the car is so much better than the tech you have to interface with... ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// This review comes after about 6 weeks of use. I am really impressed with the car overall. It has tons of great features and makes excellent use of it's considerable length (I also have a corporate lease on a Chevy Impala, which is about 1 inch longer, and the Volvo's interior feels far roomier). I love the looks (though I wish they left the dual exhaust visible). Enough has been written on the tech's design flaws but I found them not quite as bad as many have written. I do think the difference is mostly down to driving it for a short stint (to write about it) vs driving it all the time. A new tech flaw for MY 2022 is that the new Google system seems to be 100% reliant on cell coverage for its computing powers (vs some onboard processing). For reasons unknown, the cell service has been sketchy at times in South Florida. You should also know that the Google Play Store available in the car is NO WHERE NEAR the same as the one you can access on mobile devices. There is no Pandora, Waze, or may other apps you might expect. Taking out Apple Car Play/Android Auto is a HUGE step back (the kind that should cost whoever approved it their job). The driving dynamics are very much consistent with other cars in the class that I have driven. It doesn't feel quite as quick, but it has more than enough pep to get you into any merge lane you need. Highway speeds are really quite in the car and it is a very smooth ride (even on 35 profile tires) I love one of the two gage clusters (the one with the maps) but the other is underwhelming. The one I prefer has very easily read information and the screen is flawless under all lighting conditions. The HUD works well and is not cluttered (you cannot wear polarized sun glasses with HUDs in general). The trip computer is marginal at best, however. I cannot find a readout of what each tire's pressure is (you only seem to get a light that a tire is low and then you have to hunt for the offending tire). I'd love to give this car 5 stars, but it just needs a bit more pep and Apple Car Play is a 100% must have. Google's automotive platform is not the same caliber (not talking about Android Auto, but rather this car's Google OS). One final note: We passed on Audi because South Florida dealers wanted above MSRP (like so many); our local Volvo dealer was not doing that.

Great Car that's actually a car

This is one very pleasant and very comfortable vehicle. It's large and quiet and packs enough punch needed to get around as well as easily entering any highway ramp. You get to speed very quickly and it doesn't disappoint. The touch screen is very nice and very similar to an Apple iPad. I have no complaints. My one minor gripe is I wish the rear view mirror dimming feature was more effective. The mirror does not darken at all for night time driving. Rear headlights glare in your eyes and is very distracting. Spoke to the dealer about it and I'm told that's how it works. Other than that it's a great car and have driven it several years without any incident or hiccups other than replace wear and tear items. Expensive to maintain and gas mileage is mediocre due to its large size and weight. It's a car and does what a car should do. I don't do laps and I'm not racing it either. I need it for pleasure as well as for errands and long distance driving. It's a pleasure to drive and absorbs road imperfections with ease. The seats are first rate and have enough power adjustments to satisfy anyone regardless of weight or height. The radio is good and I'm sure the Bowers version even better. A four-cylinder motor that can easily compete with the best and the transmission is the smoothest I've ever experienced. The back seats are limousine spacious and the rear right passenger has all the window and power seat adjustments for the front seat if it is unoccupied yielding more leg room than a la-z-boy. The leather seating is top notch and probably the best out there. I originally was not in the market for a Volvo but after searching and looking at various makes and models this one was a beauty and won me over. It's "stunning" to look at and I get compliments from onlookers who can't believe it's a Volvo. Yet it is! It's now six years of ownership and no "hiccups" just a pleasure to own and drive. I'm quite tall and wish this vehicle had a power adjustable steering column. I always need to move the steering column or drop the drivers seat to its lowest position so I can get my knees to clear. Previous cars including my 1987 Lexus had a power adjustable steering column. I miss that feature but it's my only gripe. I can live with that! I only wish that future models maintain these features and add a "much needed" feature such as the power adjustable steering column with memory features. That would be a blessing as this option would be great for us tall folks with long legs. UPDATE: I absolutely love this car and I am amazed that a 4 cylinder engine can provide such power to such a very heavy vehicle (5,400lbs). Filled with many safety features that boggles the mind and incredibly comfortable. Back seat is so spacious it should be categorized as a limousine. Very dependable and also can be expensive to maintain. Remember this is a luxury car and the price tag is part of that equation. Gas mileage is not great but let's face it, a car this heavy needs plenty of power to move it along so it will burn gas. The T5 allows you to use either premium gas or regular. I've used both and for my needs regular is more than satisfactory and a lot less expensive than premium gasoline. The T6 model is premium only because of the supercharger on the engine. It's a true boulevard carrier and a joy to drive. Just expensive to maintain and periodic software issues-updates are necessary. Had to replace the very expensive cruise control which also simultaneously controls some other features. Hasn't failed me yet and that's important. No one never wants to be stranded for any reason if avoidable.

Better than my Audi and Lexus

This is my first Volvo, and I like it much better than my 2018 Audi. The touch screen eliminates all the draw pads and knobs which I thought were a pain. Everything is so simple and intuitive. The auto pilot beats every other gizmo out there. I waited to see th 2019 Lexus ES300h, which I also owned when it first came out and loved the gas mileage. That is not such an issue these days, and, I’m tired of how Lexus keeps making their grill more and more crazy horizontal, vertical, etc. The Volvo has an elegant look, and the back seat has even more room than the Lexus. It drives nicely and has a huge sunroof. The rear seat has buttons to move the front seat forward, and can also adjust the sunroof shade. Both rear seats fold down for extra trunk space. The trunk opens with your foot and closes automatically. In addition to the touch screen, which behaves like an iPad with swiping, Volvo has a great iPhone app that starts the car using On Call. It can also lock and share stats. It’s much better than the Audi app that was created with weird, multiple tabs. I got the T5 for better mileage. The engine is a little noisy, but, that’s ok. I’m very happy with driving this luxury sedan and got a good deal on it. Signing the contract was awesome. Th finance office desk is a actually a 3 x 4 giant screen and all you do is review and click. Completely paperless! I was in and out in minutes and they didn’t push all the extra warranties like Audi. Very pleased!

S 90 is a Hot Rod in a Tuxedo

We are very happy with the new 2018 Volvo S90. Been warned, the 2017 is 5" shorter, and it's all in the back seat. We needed a bigger car to carry our infant (car seats etc.) and our S 60 was just too cramped. The S90 is wonderful! The thing rockets around corners when you ask it to, but it's gentle as a bunny when you don't. Our other car is a Dodge Challenger with a 6-speed manual transmission...except for the growl of the American brute, the Swede is as much fun to drive and way better at staying stuck to the road in hard corners thanks to the AWD. This is a good looking car as well. Big and strong.
