Used 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen Consumer Reviews
Glad to be back in a Jetta
There was one manual S available in all of Southern California when I was in the market. While I loved the response of the TD, I just couldn't justify the additional $5-10K. Plus, I live in the desert, so I really don't have any desire for a sunroof. This car replaces a 2009 Subaru Forester, a reliable yet gas guzzling AWD, with no power & awful seats. I don't regret not spending the extra $ for the diesel because I'm consistently getting 33-35 mpg/hwy, 26-28mpg/city. I drive 60/40 hwy/city. After 5 months, with 5K miles, I'm thoroughly enjoying this car. Though this is as basic a Sportwagen as one could probably find, I got a lot of car for a very reasonable price.
Awesome Car!
I have only had this car a week but so far it really has exceeded my expectations. It took a few weeks before one of my local dealers had a manual model but the wait was worth it. I drove one with a DSG transmission and it was fine but with the manual it is just a more engaging car to drive. The torque from this little turbo diesel is amazing. It pulled up a big hill in 4th gear at 1500rpm at 40mph with no problem. Great interior with lots of room. I am getting right at 40mpg with mixed driving. The car is not fast but it feels quick with great handling. It really is a "SPORT"wagen. This car feels like it could cost a lot more than $25,000.

poor man's audi
Did the ECM/TCM reprograming from IE. Not really cheap if you have the auto trans and have to flash that, but man oh man does it work. Car is quicker by a second 0-60 than GTI of the era. A riot to drive. Downside, is requires high octane fuel which is really expensive now, but I don't drive many miles a week. New thought on suspension. The Koni Sports are over damped for these springs. The FSD or a Bilstein B8 would be better choice. Great car. Total sleeper now. Finally installed sport suspension. Factory VW DG springs with Koni sport dampers. If you do this....set rebound at full soft. The Koni's have higher base rate damping to work with the higher spring rate of the sport spring. Lowers car by 1" which looks great. More sporty and aggressive but doesn't look 'slammed'. Handling is on par with a GTI from the era (ie: before adaptive dampers) Ride is somewhat firmer but not harsh, but man is it fun on a twisty back road. 75K miles now and not a single issue. I have new plugs and coil packs to install, but that is preventative only. No squeaks or rattles. No rust anywhere. (even underneath) They built this right. Next upgrade will be eco/tcu tune from Integrated Engineering. There's a lot of potential in that lowly 2.5 engine. Engine tune is stupid fun. 0-60 in 6.8-6.9 which is better than stock GTI of the era. Downside beside besides initial cost is requires premium grade fuel.......which has become a bit pricey. Still, with all the abuse, not a singe thing has broken on this car. I've done nothing short of religious maintenance (which includes 5K oil changes on synthetic, not 10K as allowed) It's fun, it's practical, it's bulletproof. And I think it looks cool. Adding a factory Votex body kit in the spring. Best car I've ever owned.

An amazing value
I am really very impressed by the features and value of the base model Sportwagen S. If you are looking for an upscale interior and a large cargo area, there really isn't another vehicle that compares. It is comfortable to sit in, drives very well, and comes equipped with virtually all the features one would look for in a daily driver.
Great vehicle but rusting in less than three years
We were very happy with this vehicle until we noticed it rusting on the passenger door on the drivers side. The rust is on the metal support forward of the window. It seems to start where the column enters the door and is creeping up the column. We took it to VW. They took pictures and sent them to their engineers. Their engineers say it is the result of a scratch. The engineer never looked at the vehicle. They looked at pictures. There is no evidence of a scratch. The estimated cost of repair is 250 dollars on a car that cost us 29,000 dollars... rusting in less than three years... this is no way to treat a customer. VW corporate is not client friendly. Rust update: We took it to the dealer to have the part replaced. Once the VW service manager saw the removed part he realized it was not rusting from a scratch and he did not charge us for the replacement service. This stand up service manager works at VW in Wappingers Falls on route 9.
