I have read the Edmunds review and many EV’s and I drove quite a few, Hybrid’s and EV’s. I decided to purchase the Pro S front drive only ID.4……I would give it a 9.5. It is extremely quick and so fun to drive. It is a solid vehicle and hugs the road like it is glued down. I think if you compare to a $100,000 EV yea there will be a difference in power, but frankly you do not need it. I have owned BMW’s, Porsche’s, Lexus, Audi’s, Infinities and driven race cars. Anymore power is basically dangerous for most drivers to understand and control a vehicle that goes 0-60 in under 5 seconds. I am not sure how Edmunds does their “real world” mileage but using the regenerating feature on the ID.4 when I charge to 100% I have a range of 340 miles! I to me definitely is one of the best looking small SUV EV’s. Many look quirky and down right ugly, as if they are trying not to look like a gas vehicle. Loads of room inside, and I am 6’3 250lbs and have no issue in and out as well as headroom, shoulder room etc. We have a car seat in the back for our 2 yr old grandson and the front seat has room for a person t sit it in it unlike the Lincoln Aviator I used to have! All in all best car I have purchased for a while and enjoy driving of instead of my other $135,000 vehicle.

Not sure how this compares to Tesla but certainly lower priced than similarly equipped. Software needs work and UI is not intuitive and slightly buggy. Otherwise it's an amazing car and had a great experience driving 500 miles in a day. Charging network is great in California and never felt I would run out of juice.

Excellent EV SUV

Have a 2023 ID.4 Pro S with the SK battery and have owned it for a bit over 6k miles now. Absolutely love it, it’s an excellent vehicle, roomy, quiet, comfortable, great ev range and battery charging speeds. Really nothing to complain about, no issues with the car, the infotainment issues are over stated especially with the newer software, the software on this car is just as good as any other car software I’ve tried, never had any issues with it. Cross shopped Ioniq 5, EV6, Mach-E and Model Y and ended up going with the ID.4, the ride in the ID.4 is just excellent better than any of those cars especially the Model Y and Mach-E. The software is not an issue like I said before and the controls aren’t really either, you get used to them almost immediately. The only issue I have is that the middle controls are not illuminated at night, but I got used to it within a couple minutes of driving at night. The value of the ID.4 was also some of the best out of all of those cars, it also has the full tax credit which the Ioniq 5 and EV6 don’t have. The only other criticism I have is the audio system isn’t the best thing in the world, it’s fine but not great. But aside that and the illuminated controls I have absolutely no other issues with the car. I love it. Would absolutely recommend.

Small issues

the good: Great looks. Much more power than I would ever need. Ok range. Overall nice car. Software issues are not as bad as online complaints. Wireless iphone/android is useful and works.   General complaints: Visibility is a real issue. Front columns are hindering right and left side. when making a 90-degree turn, there is pretty much no visibility of pedestrians. You have to lean all the way forward to check. I like the seat higher, when the seat is high, i brush my head when entering. I am 6'3". minor complaint: need to confirm user every time. Reliability issues: I had to bring to service twice in on year for small issues: Rear view mirror fell off at 8 months. Possibly from heat. Took over two weeks to fix. After the fix, rain sensing never worked. I turned on/off from menu multiple times. Driver side touch door lock was always flakey, it worked about half the time when brand new, gradually stopped working. Passenger side touch door lock is also flaky, but not as bad as driver's door. Driver door handle latch actuator stopped working yesterday. Need to pull hard to open. Fairly inconvenient. Slow service: Just diagnosing is taking multiple days. Car stays in dealer for a week while total work done on it is just few hours.

Good basic car with a few flaws

Our ID.4 has a good range and is comfortable to drive. That said, there are a few issues that would make me rethink the purchase decision if I had it to do over. A spare tire should be an essential item. One was not provided with our car. An independent tire company told us that you couldn't get one. We called the dealer and found that this was not true. They will sell us a kit, including the tire, wrench and jack for only $700. Wow! I hope that they are managing to make a profit on that. The car has been designed to maximize its range. This is good, but not at the expense of the owner. The front and rear tires are different sizes. You can't rotate them. The rear ones are wearing more quickly than the front. We will just have to change them at different times. Another major nuisance. I just love spending the afternoon in the tire store. There are no 12 volt outlets in the front of the car. I wanted to install a dash-cam, but would have to run a wire to the rear of the car to provide power. It has had a few software glitches. We were on a highway and the four-ways started blinking and the horn was honking. Fortunately no one shot us. We took it to the dealer but they had no idea as to what went wrong. All-in-all, it's a decent car, but it could easily be improved on.

ID4 vs Tesla model Y

I got my id4 pro 12 days ago . In average , I drive about 100 miles a day. I’ve been charging my car 8 times in the last 12 days . I found out that the range is not accurate ! I live in los angeles and it get hot here a lot. when the car shows 140 miles battery left , If I turn on the air condition , it drops down to 105 miles . My previous Tesla model Y used to drop only 7 miles in 100 mile range . keep in mind that when you drive an ev , you always want to have at least 100 miles range before you charge it again. all thought that id 4 looks nice and drive well but Range and charging is very disappointing. I have to bear with it for another 36 months, but definitely this is not a car that I will lease , buy or keep. I hope this review becomes helpful to those who want to make the decision to purchase a new EV car.

Love the size of the vehicle and the interior design. The seats are incredibly comfortable. The software makes me want to drop it off a cliff however. Constant issues connecting to charging stations, even the bundled free sessions at their own network of chargers. I've had to send it to the repair center multiple times over sensors that would slam on the brakes as I crossed intersections, or attempted to leave my parking garage. I am constantly asked to sign in to my VW account as it seems to sign me out on my own vehicle randomly. None of the interior controls are illuminated at night so good luck finding them. Just an absolute nightmare and my first and last VW ever. I'm ready to dump this for an internal combustion engine just to not have to drive it again.

Car is 6 months old and has now been at deal for 3 months. 3k miles and the car little up like a Christmas tree with errors - dealers has never seen so many. Needs a new electric motor and was just notified of a recall on the battery and cells need to be replace. The dealer has been great but VW corporate talks like it’s my problem and not theirs. Never buy a VW again!

Great looking ID.4 and very efficient

I have had this car for 6 weeks and my commute driving has been really pleasant. My ID.4 Pro S AWD has all power needed for normal driving. First 1200 miles efficiency is 3.7 miles per kW (3.7 x 77kW usable = 285 miles range). Only 20% highway, and heater not needed much. The heated seats and steering wheel have been just right. The sunroof is excellent with automatic cover that closes in any position. Trailer hitch is good without $1000 extra charge. (Y) Sound system has been plenty good. User controls have been easy to use and I turn off most of the automatic features like easy entry driver seat and "unlock when approaching". Free charging for 3 years is great and convenient right near my house. Only one bug is that drivers window goes down sometimes when it should go up. Still this gets 5 stars.

Not quite sure on many positive reviews here. I am at 19,000 miles after 11 months driving and as such, can confidently say this model has delivered experience far away from satisfactory. It is electric motor, hv battery and usual electronics (remote, entertainment system, climate control, user preset settings, etc.) that have been installed in cars for at least a decade. And somehow, VW managed to screw it on grand scale: 1. It stopped detecting remote key fob even though it has new battery. 2. After over the air OS update, it resets all my user pre-saved settings. Why would it do that after simple update? 3. VW app is useless; 4. Rear brakes are squealing every time I need to do harder than light braking. 5. Rear trunk opens up on third - fourth try. 6. When driving long distance I am always concerned Electrify America will be unavailable or I will get stuck for hours charging at 30-40kW per hour. At first, I really liked the car. I do a work myself when I need to replace car fluids/parts; so it was refreshing to know that I would not have to do most of it with ID4. Now, I realize it comes with its own set of failures which are really surprising given the fact that moving details of this car are simpler than internal combustion engine with transmission, transfer case, rear differential. But VW has managed to @@@ it up with this one. All my office mates own teslas and I should have listened to them and purchased Tesla Y. Now, even if I try to sell it today I would lose almost half from the spot price I paid.

Our first EV and it's a winner. First impression is fantastic. Impressive fit and finish. Car is spacious, comfortable and hugs the road. Plenty of acceleration when needed. Great in snow. Steering wheel and seats heat up in seconds. Chose this EV due to range, AWD and good ground clearance. Highly recommend.

This is a really solid EV. It’s quite, comfortable, has tons of room and one of the highest ground clearances of any EV on the market beside Rivian and the Subaru/toyota EV. The ID.4 charging speed is not the fastest, but it’s up there and has a good charging curve. I rarely need to stop for more than 15 minutes to charge on a road trip. While the infotainment software could be a little better it’s not an issue for me since I just use Apple CarPlay. I think VW did a great job of making a great practical EV that balance all the compromises of different EVs in just the right way for me.

They managed to delete my review. I am shocked google let's that happen. Anyway, I will not give up. Will keep re-posting this for everyone to see the incompetence of vw. I had my Id4 stop on me while driving 5 times in a couple of months, 3 times on the freeway. I have given my car for servicing every time. thrice at Herman cook vw and twice at Kearny mesa vw(both in San Diego, CA). I think 4/5 times all they did was recalibrate the parts and change nothing(or may be they did, I can't remember, but the 5th time they didn't replace any parts), once(4th time) they changed some parts and still did not help. Now, the car is returned and I am so scared of when it's gonna stop next, always drive on the right lane so I can get to the shoulder. vw on the whole has terrible customer service and id4 would be the worst car to buy, even a 2 decade old salvaged used car would be safer than id4. It's a life threatening situation I am dealing with my car stopping this frequently on the freeway. Keeping it for 2 weeks and just recalibrating without being able to find any issues is inexcusable.

This has been a great car to drive—quick, comfortable, and handles well. Most of the “professional” reviews I read are extremely picky and generally irrelevant. Yes, the software could be tweaked, a heads up display would be great and the interior could be a bit nicer. Of course, more range would be great, so this isn’t a car to take in long trips (most EVs aren’t). My primary complaint is that bidirectional charging isn’t implemented yet—despite promises this would be available long ago. Waiting waiting waiting…Anyone interested in an EV should check out this vehicle!

I had a 2021 id4 pro s gradient and really loved it. The drive is excellent! Smooth and quiet and built solid. I made the mistake and traded it in 2023 for a model y long range thinking the range would be much better. The range wasn’t much better. I only kept that for 4 months because of the awful build quality, awful ride, awful service, and unsafe autopilot. I happily purchased a 2023 id4 pro s again and couldn’t be happier to be back. Get an id4!

VW Id.4 is disaster in winter, charges goes down

Despite having a good looking and 5 star safety features, this EV during winter the is worse car i have ever experienced. I bought AWD Pros S for $53k and I was happy to save gas money but I ended up with fast charging stations because it takes more than 12 hrs to charge full in home so fast charging stations cost me double of gas. Another big problem is that rapidly consuming battery in winter when you need AC heat on. I turn on my AC and the charge started decreasing like numbers you can see in secs. That is horrible.

I have had this car for 2 years now and had two electric cars prior to the id4. I'm 67 so I've also had a lot of ice cars over the years. The smooth handling, the terrific all wheel drive traction, the high rate, and the quick acceleration are all major benefits. The car also has considerable utility value with considerable trunk space and can easily tow a good size trailer. the reliability is incredible with essentially no issues in the two years that I have owned it. Overall, best car I've ever owned.

Love the vehicle as it is well built and good looking. It is very slow compared to any Tesla or Hyundai electric. Range at 90% is 224. That is the main issue of you need a vehicle to travel with. This is a car for the suburbs or inner city only.

We leased our 2023 RWD Pro S back in July 2023. Very comfortable ride and super quiet. We chose the RWD over the AWD as it accelerates plenty fast enough for our needs and the range in slightly greater (saves nearly $4k as well). We are averaging 4mi/kw hour on the long term calculator! That comes out to an average of 308 miles in range (based on the 77kw usable battery). Installed a 50 amp outlet (40 amps usable). Sound system is decent and I have become more comfortable with the infotainment system as the months pass. Had only one issue in that the screen(s) went black when driving home one day several months ago. Next time I went to use the vehicle the system must have rebooted and it never happened again since. I highly recommend the ID.4 to anyone looking for an EV that has a local dealership presence. Our vehicle is fully covered (bumper to bumper) during the entire 36 month lease as is scheduled maintenance for the 10k and 20k checkup. Got a great deal leasing it as the Fed tax credit of $7,500 was taken off the price before the monthly lease numbers were generated!

With nearly 6000 miles on it so far, the ID.4 is going quite well. We've had a couple of minor glitches with the charging - once the cable wouldn't release until we relocked and unlocked the car, and occasionally, it will plan to charge to 100% even though we've instructed it to charge to only 80% to improve battery life. Both issues are easily worked around. Other than that, we're quite satisfied with the vehicle. No gas costs, and we planned on an EV when we installed our solar panels, so no significant electrical costs either. One thing that surprised us when we compared the vehicles we were cross-shopping: the ID.4 is the smallest on the outside but has similar passenger room and more cargo space than the others. Being smaller makes a noticeable difference when parking in our garage. It's snug with the ID.4 - would be really tight with either of the others. The ID.4 felt like it drove the best of the various EVs we tested (Honda Prologue, Chevy Equinox) that get the full $7500 rebate. The infotainment system takes a little getting used to but is working well - not having the slow response of the earlier system. Performance is quite good, though you are aware of the heft of the vehicle. The regen braking makes it quite similar to driving an ICE-powered car. The adaptive cruise control works great.

One reason I bought this car was because it qualified for full EV federal and state tax credits. The car is totally manufactured in the US qualifying it for the full $7500 federal tax credit. It will be gone under Trump. I leased the car because I exceeded the income limit. By leasing the vehicle, the dealer gets the tax credit but they passed the savings on to me. I also love German engineering. Not so sure about US manufacturing as the 2023 model was recalled 7 times and in 2024 there was a 3-1/2 month pause in sales because of a recall to fix the driver door handle which could cause the door to open unexpectedly. The car handles perfectly. I have driven it in the Mountains in Colorado and in the snow. The AWD system smooths out the icy and snow packed conditions. The technology is a bit daunting for me (I'm 78). I have to "trial and error" a lot of it. It's a bit tight to get in and out of for this old body, but once your in, it is very comfortable. I love the remote climate control system in the recent below zero cold snap.

I compared the ID4, Ariya and BZ4X and the ID4 won and had the best rating of these cars. Then I test drove it and fell in love with this car!

Have test driven this on 4 occasions, the last being last week looking for another EV as a second car. Make no doubt, this a very handsome vehicle! Wheels, smooth lines. While the interior is fairly comfortable, the seating position is odd, at best. The interior design and software screens looks like a child designed them, and the abundance of cheap black textured plastic is “scratch ready”. Now to the ride quality. Most EVs are smooth and quiet, this being no exception. But some EVs excel in this category. The iD4 is at the lower end, with poor noise isolation on rough surfaces, and doesn’t really ride that well. We were quoted 45k for a new Pro S….but thought, why not check out a 23 EQB used, with 4000 mi. For 38K. Do yourself a favor….they take a hit like all new EVs….the EQE is exceptionally nice for the money. Everything about it is better, except in the looks dept. I call mine “the Magic Bus”….

The ID4 is quick and fun to drive. Love the interior storage efficiency up front and roomy rear hatch. Back seats are comfortable for taller adults. EA charging experience is mostly positive- though more chargers are needed and a better understanding of the widely variable charging speeds in 30 min complimentary charging can be frustrating. I mostly charge at home which is convenient, but hopefully also will extend battery life.

I've had 3 EV's....a Nissan Leaf, a Chevy Bolt, and now an ID4 Pro S. I have loved them all but wanted a larger car, so I traded in the Bolt. The ID4 is an outstanding vehicle and I love to drive it. It handles very well and is great on the open road or in the city. The technology is amazing and I haven't had any serious problems with the infotainment system, as some are reporting. It feels like a safe vehicle and the visibility is very good all around the car. The material on the seats is different, but wonderful for comfort and cleanliness. My only wish for something different is that the one-pedal braking would come to a complete stop. When you pull up to a stop light, you can tap the brake and it will "auto hold" but I wish it would do it automatically, like it did in the Bolt. I've always used the one-pedal braking and love it. The fact that VW provides free charging for three years with Electrify America was also a bonus. I have taken two long distance trips and it hasn't cost me a dime in "fuel." The back-end cargo space is not as roomy as I would like it to be, but it is sufficient. Passengers ride comfortably. I purchased the vehicle 15 months ago and am extremely glad I did. The price was great and the value is even better.

The ID.4 is a very good car. It ticks almost all the boxes for an EV. Full one pedal driving is one item I would like. It handles well and is quick. The interior space is well laid out, and the car is quiet and solid. We've driven our Pro AWD model from Atlanta to Chicago, and it is an excellent road car and is equally at home in the city. I would like 50 more miles of highway range; however, I am very pleased with the overall driving experience, interior features, and price. The ID.4 charges quickly and is a solid road trip option. I've driven it more than 1,6000 miles round trip on one trip.

VW and Audi need [non-permissible content removed]

We had the car a couple of months and took it up to central California. It made it almost half way there when we left after charging it and a block later stopped in the middle of the road. The car will not move, you cannot push a dead EV. Called VW roadside assistance and they sent a tow truck out after 45 minutes of blocking traffic. VW Ventura did not appear to have a clue on what was wrong and would not look at it for at least 2 days. After looking at the car, they still had no idea what was wrong and they believed it to be a charging system error. The dealer said they were in contact with VW engineering and would try to come up with a fix. 10 days later the car was returned to us with a new charge port and wiring harness supposedly. Had to drive 150 miles from home to pick it up and was a nervous wreck driving it home on the 101 and 405 freeways. I did not trust the fix and VW refused to bring the car to us. The car has not had the issue come up since the repair was made but I still don't trust taking it far from home. Read the reviews of VW and Audi cars, they all have way too many electrical problems and way too often VW/Audi does have a fix for the problems. The service technicians at the dealerships are clueless dealing with all the electrical issues these two car brands have and VW customer (we don't) care is a joke. I like the styling of VW and was considering getting an Atlas cross sport when the lease was up but after owning the id4, this will be my 1 and only VW car.

2024 id4 AWD excellent suv

Car drives very similar to our previous rav4 awd without the engine noise and has way more power . Also similar in passenger space maybe a little more leg room in rear then rav4. Slightly less storage behind the rear seats and opening is also a bit smaller. Have just over 5k miles since June and no issues other then inner fender plastic insert wasn’t seated properly so dealer popped it in. We do mostly home charging so about 30% cost to drive compared to rav4 over the 5k. No winter driving yet but expect the cost to go up to about 50% of rav4 during winter. Range driving locally is about 260 mi when using 80% charge. That dropped to 230 mi using same 80% at 70-75mph interstate trips. Overall very satisfied with the vehicle.

The ID.4 has a nice, roomy interior. That's about where the good stuff ends. The vehicle has poor sound deadening, utterly atrocious controls on the steering wheel and console, poor build quality (gaskets under the hood not seated, rear light bar retaining clips failing), crappy tires, intrusive lane keeping assist that can't read lane markers very well, and recalls that go unresolved for months.

Want an EV? Buy something else

Michael, 02/25/2025

I bought a base ID4 about 10 months ago and put about 6500 miles on it so far. It was nice at first, but the more I drive it, the more I hate it. Pros: Very comfortable seats Cons: Pretty much everything else. While the seats are very comfortable, it really is the only good part (IMO) about this piece of junk. The infotainment system is probably the worst I've ever seen and used. We have a Kia Sorento PHEV and that system is far from great, but miles ahead of the one in the ID4. It is laggy and sometimes completely unresponsive. You have the option to "customize" it, by picking a layout or multiple layouts if you want to, but the system itself will dictate what you can put on what widget/screen. The driver info display is even worse, you can't customize it at all. I am somewhat old school and I like analog (or digital gauges that look analog) over numbers and the driver info display only displays numbers. Moving on the "sliders" and haptic "buttons" on the steering wheel, also, probably the worst idea VW has ever had (a topic that has been discussed all over, not going into it, just saying they suck). The sliders for temp control and volume underneath the screen are NOT backlit in my model (I believe the PRO and S models do have illuminated sliders) and they function just as good as the crap buttons on the wheel. Continuing to the window controls, and it gets even better. At first, I didn't understand the issue other people had with them, until I noticed. 95% of the time I hit the button for the rear windows on accident and roll down the rear instead of the front, not a huge deal, but it's frustrating. The interior build quality is also not what I expected from a VW. As stated above, the car currently only has about 6500 miles, but it rattles all over, sounds like loose panels (will have the dealer take a look during the first service). The driving range is pretty ridiculous too, I don't think I've ever gotten the EPA estimate and most of the time I don't even drive the 70mph speed limit on the highway. The range drops significantly when it gets cold and when you turn on the heat or ac. I currently get anywhere between 110 to 170 miles with the recommended 80% charge. 170 miles ONLY when i don't turn the heat/ac on and when I don't drive on the freeway, my current average is maybe around 140, absolutely inadequate. Speaking of driving, driving the ID4 is extremely boring, it is slow from a standstill (not what most people would expect from an EV) and the ride itself is on the stiffer side, thanks to the very comfortable seats, its manageable. Stupid me, I decided to lease the car, rather than financing it, and thanks to VW, I'm stuck with it unless I want to buy it out of the lease and try to sell it. That would be a very bad idea, as the resale value of the ID4 is horrendous. Dealers have quoted me 17000-19000 for it, which means the car lost more than 50% of its value in less than 1 year. Just something buyers need to be aware of. I don't think I would ever get another EV and most certainly would not get another VW.

I am surprised at how good the driving dynamics are!…like a giant go-cart when pushed a bit. Shockingly nimble handling for something that has the weight of an F-150 truck. Improved charging, battery pre-conditioning, more power, and incremental efficiency and range improvements. Glad I waited for 2024.
