Still Love It after 17 years!
My mechanic loves my ‘01 TDI. He always offers to buy it when I bring it in for synthetic oil changes every 5 K miles. The engine is awesome, 1.9 L with 90 hp built in Germany. It’s zippy but has great gas mileage- My best was 650 Miles with one tank. I’m only at around 140,400K miles now so still have many more to go. The interior is cloth and hasn’t held up as well as the engine. Glove compartment doesn’t open, center armrest top isn’t connected anymore, large split seat in back doesn’t fold down...i wish i had spent the extra $$$ on leather seats and a moonroof. Reflex silver paint holding up well but just noticed one small rust spot on the hood. I’d love to purchase a syncro westie tdi in the future! I used 100% biodiesel for an interval an had issues with my glow plugs. I garage the golf, a necessity when the weather gets cold here. I wouldn’t recommend this vehicle for cold climates with outdoor parking because the water in diesel fuel can freeze at low temps and create operational issues.

The turbo is worth it.
This car is really great to drive- especially when passing people. The turbo makes the car fun, but the interior layout (the back seats fold down flat to double trunk space) makes it practical. The back seat doesn't have a lot of leg room, but for a semi-compact car it's not bad. I've heard several people complain of the cloth seats pilling, but I haven't really had any problems. My dealership dealt w/the problems I've had (a radio that made the alarm randomly go off & a bad heated mirror) quickly & w/o any hassles. The factory cd changer is ridiculous. It's much cheaper & as simple to buy from somewhere else & either do it yourself, or get it installed.

Good car overall!
I love the car in general. It is really fun to drive and has great fuel economy (average 48 mpg city and 54 mpg highway). Excellent power for a four cylinder. Only have encountered on problem so far -- faulty window mechanism for power windows. Driver side window fell down into door and wouldn't come back up. Dealer fixed both windows simultaneously and indicated that it was a problem with the pulley design.
VW Golf 1.8 Turbo (2001)
The Golf 1.8T is pure pleasure to drive! It's the best car I have ever owned. It's stylish, flexible, roomy, powerful, very responsive and great fun to drive with! It might be a bit more expensive than other cars in this class but the money is definitly worth it!!!
Great car for commuting
The golf is great for commuting but not for transporting more than 3 people. when 4 or 5 people are in the car it gets kind of sluggish. but for driving to work, home, shopping and a little roadtrip its great. It comes off the corners well but will handle a lot better with performance tires. The manual windows are great since my buddies auto window regulators keep breaking on his 2002 gti. check up on the window regulators they are notorious for failling but i think VWOA had a recall out on it now but you may want to check it out to make sure
