Safety Hazard

In all honesty if not for the engine and transmission this would be my favorite truck I have owned. Looks are flawless in my opinion and comfort is what I'd expect from a 4x4 truck. But thats the best I'll give it. On day 3 of owning the tacoma my check engine light came on with the most awful vibration. I immediately took it back to the dealer to find out 6 injectors needed to be replaced. While there I reported a bad delay in going from park to drive, and this especially concerned me backing out of my driveway in the mornings going to work, a couple times up to 5 seconds (imagine sitting in the highway 5 seconds stalled). After three visits to the service dept about this they check the transmission fluid to find it is nearly a quart low! This is still within the 1000 miles and they claim they can't reproduce it. I reproduced it in the truck with the mechanic and that still got me no where as "thats normal". As the other reviewers also mentioned the throttle response and shifting is horrible. They are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. Nearly every day I press the gas pedal moderately and it gets hung in the wrong gear, bogs the engine, begins to slow slightly, so I press harder. Suddenly after a few seconds it decides to rev very high and jump into far too low of gear (or out of gear completely) and significantly slows the truck. I completely let off the gas, coast down the highway, and wait for it to shift back in to gear (again stalling in the highway). All while the service manager says the shifting is "normal with these new electronic transmissions". If you don't mind a truck that will stall you in the middle of the road, buy this truck. Otherwise go buy something else. It is obvious from the transmission fluid and characteristics of this transmission this truck never saw a day of quality control or testing.

Heading Back to the Dealer After First Fue Fill Up

I so much want to like and live with the 2016 Tacoma, but as other reviewers have mentioned the truck has a fatal flaw with its engine/transmission combination. As a result, I'm returning the truck w/ only 400 miles as it almost couldn't make it to my office today with a full tank of gas! Granted I work at 6,200' and there was a 20 mph wind blowing. But seriously, this truck is a dog. I read on Edmunds that the new V6 (with supposedly 42 increased HP) combined with the Atkinson cycle and a 6-speed automatic transmission is a full second slower in speed tests from 0 to 60 than last year's model, and I believe it. It sounds like a bad marriage. The transmission keeps the engine in the low RPM range, but w/ the Atkinson cycle, peak HP & torque is up around 5,000 rpm. Very hard to get the truck to its power band. It feels like the two systems were designed by engineers who didn't consult one another. The truck is always shifting. At times, it feels as though it's in too high of a gear and the engine/transmission vibrate. When you step on the gas, there's a huge delay as the transmission may have to drop 2 or 3 gears to get going and then you have to wait for the engine to rev up. There is an extra power button, but that doesn't help all that much. Apparently, the Atkinson cycle works well in the Toyota Prius, where it saves gas, but not in this truck. It's because of its lack of power, and more importantly, snow accelerator response, that I'm returning my 2016 Toyota Tacoma.

An Honest Review From A New Tacoma Owner

Kyle M., 07/09/2016
2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Double Cab 4WD 5.0 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)

Let me start off this review by saying that I have never owned a Tacoma before or a truck. Also I have had my Tacoma for about 10 weeks now. I felt it was necessary to write a review to defend this truck. This is a great truck and I would recommend it, but lease it till they work out the bugs. First off, I'll start off with one of probably the most important questions, the mpg. I average around 20 mpg, doing about 60% city, 40% highway. If you do a lot of highway driving, my mpg meter has gone as high as 26mpg, as long as you don't drive like a jerk, you should get decent mileage. But when you buy a truck you're not buying it for the mpg, you buy it for versatility, otherwise go buy a Prius. Moving onto performance and ride quality. In terms of performance, I will admit acceleration can be a bit sluggish, especially when you need it. However, I find that if you turn the ect pwr button on or put it in sport mode, that does seem to loosen up the transmission a bit for better acceleration. It's no race car, but it still has ample passing power. In terms of ride quality, it's relatively smooth, but when going over bumps it gets pretty rough, so ride quality is so-so. And to add to that steering is pretty responsive. In terms of the interior, I love it, it's very simplistic but very nice and clean layout. I have cloth seats and they're very comfy, and the infotainment center's touchscreen is very responsive and user friendly. In terms of sound system, I had heard Toyota speakers were garbage, but to be honest they're actually pretty decent. Certain genres of music can be on the quieter side and require you to really crank it up. But overall, for the non-jbl's they still have pretty decent bass. Last but not least, I'd just like to add that, the backup camera makes parking the Tacoma even easier, as it's nimble size makes it easier to get through tight spaces. The design is definitely a big improvement in my opinion. Overall I give it 4 stars, it's a great truck, but still has its short comings, hopefully when my lease is up they'll make more improvements on the little things. Hope this review helped any future buyers!

Underpowered motor, terrible transmission, issues

Have had many issues with leaf springs squeaking toyota says they can't fix it. Three times been to dealer for this. Rear differential was making a howling noise on freeway between 55 and 65 mph when feathering the accelerator pedal and ended up being replaced under warranty but now the replacement rear diff is making the same noise. Spent many hours at dealer and toyota tech flew out to look now they claim it's normal. Driveline vibrations noticed at 1800 to 2200rpms. Toyota claims this is normal too but never had this on any other vehicle I've owned. Toyota quality control going down the crapper. The fuel economy is no better than my old 2009 Tacoma yet they put a smaller motor and it performs terribly...it lacks low-end torque. Dealer applied software update to "fix" transmission shifting constantly but after about 1000 miles the tranny shifts like poorly again. I thought it would get better with mileage but it has only gotten worse. Would not buy again

Vibration Nation

The engine is weak compared to the 2nd Generation Tacoma. The transmission shifts erratically, even after the electronic transmission "learns" your driving behaviors. I'm averaging 17 MPG gas mileage, despite the 18-20 MPG advertisement. Worst, the 2016 is plagued by several vibration problems. First, a driveline vibration/shudder on acceleration. This was a vexing problem with the the Tacoma since 2005. And Toyota's Chief Engineer Mike Sweers claims they completely eliminated this problem in the 2016. Nope. It's still there. Now add to the 2016 a strong buzzing vibration that transmits through the steering wheel and gas pedal on acceleration. This wasn't there on previous Tacomas I've owned before 2016. The buzzing traverses through your skin and clothes (not hyperbole). It's annoying on street driving; but it's downright ridiculous and dangerous on highway driving, when you're exposed to it for long periods. Toyota's response to all of this has officially been "these are normal and characteristic; we're sorry you don't like it." So, they intentionally designed vibrations into the truck. Don't be fooled by the "it's a truck" excuse. I've owned many trucks, including Tacomas, and a normal truck doesn't do this. Period. Overall, very disappointing.
