After reading almost all of the reviews for the 2021 Highlander hybrids I am wondering if I am driving the same 2021 Toyota highlander hybrid they are rating. I purchased my Highlander hybrid 3-15-21 and have 1325 miles as of 5/22/21 mostly city driving but using several of the local freeway driving at 65-70 mph. I have been averaging 44.2 mpg using ECO mode around the city and freeways I have nothing but but great things to say about my Highlander except the engine is a bit noisy when you hit the gas but there are trade off's in any situation if you want to save gas. It appears I must be lucky because I have not had any of the issues several of the other drivers are having. Very Happy Highlander hybrid owner.

Country Roads, Take Me Home

If you drive on twisty two lane roads in moderately hilly country and encounter very few stop lights you can get far better than the EPA rating. Perhaps 3-4 mpg better. There is only one stop light in the county I live in. I live out of town on roads without painted lines. With only a couple fill-ups so far I'm absolutely amazed at the gas mileage. The car rides smooth, is a joy to drive and is not noisy at all. The people complaining about engine noise and lower than expected milage must be talking about high speed interstate travel which I rarely ever encounter. Update: I've make a couple long trips on interstate. Interstate mileage is 38 mpg. My typical local milage has been 39 to 41 mpg per tank. My other car is a 2028 Mazda cx-5, Can't believe that I think the Highlander handles better. Maybe I need new tires on the Mazda? 5000 miles so far and I love my Highlander. 2/23/22: Really nice. Smooth, gliding ride, handles turns unexpectedly well. I like driving it. Perhaps more than my Mazda CX-5. Seems well made and worth the money. I don't use third row and have the platinum with captains chairs. Never need to carry more than 4. Would like third row removable. I don't like how fast forward works on podcasts, too slow. Other than that it's hard to find fault. I've had no trouble exceeding 36 mpg on every tank full. Had it nearly a year now and no problems at all. Plenty of power for me and comfortable ride. Nothing much compares if you want a hybrid SUV with some size to it. Just had my one year free oil change and check. Still loving it. It's spring and gas mileage is back up around 40 from a low during winter of 37. Update 10/29/22, year and a half owership. Had to call roadside assistance. They sent someone quickly, started the Highlander started with a jumper battery. They and re-set the error codes at the dealer. The problem was Iistened to the radio (accessory mode) for over two hours waiting on my wife at the doctor. I didn't know that you could deplete the 12V battery so quickly. Unless the lead acid battery is above a certain voltage you aren't permitted to start the car (software). I now use headphones listen to podcasts and avoid accessory mode for extended periods. I carry a small jump-start battery too. Owners should be made aware. I still love the Highlander, still getting 38-40 mpg, still quite and smooth. No other issues. 2 1/2 years ownership. All is well. At my last free maintenance check/oil change they informed me of tire wear and brake pad wear. It seemed to me that it was excessive. They said both were about 1/3 worn. I drive very conservative and use regenerative braking almost exclusively to get max mpg. Nearly all miles were local non-interstate at or below 55 mph. Miles driven was about 14,000. These findings don't make sense. At this rate I'll need brakes and tires at 45K. I've been told regenerative braking saves on brake pads and slow gentle driving saves on tires. Otherwise, though, I love the car as much as before. No other issues. Highly recommend. 10/31/2023

Pleasantly surprising gas consumption

Own my new 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid for over a month now. Really impressed with how little gas it takes for such big SUV. Everything is good except cargo space/trunk, which is too small and too high. Got it brand new Highlander Platinum 2022 over a month ago. There are several pros and cons: PROS: - great gas mileage. On colder days the average was 7.2 L/100 km, (yes, I am from BC, Canada); on warmer days sometimes I got 6.0 L/100 km - very quiet when in electric or semi-electric mode - nice sound - heads-up display (the most loved feature by me!) - lots more! CONS: - cheap plastic for the rear doors. Really cheap for such expensive vehicle - raving engine when accelerating on highways + gas consumption goes very high - poor location/design of rear camera. Due to water buildup on rainy days I could barely see what is behind my SUV. Poor visibility/low resolution at night. - stupid design/location of wireless phone charger

Amazing Technology, lots of little rattles

I've been waiting for years to find a car to replace my 2006 4Runner. I finally gave up on seeing a 4Runner redesign and decided I wanted something that was better for the environment. The Highlander hits the sweet spot for me. I've averaged 33 mpg overall since getting the car in late April. I saw an improvement in mpg once Summer gas became available. My best trip mpg has been 40 when driving from the Portland OR area to the coast. If you can keep speed in to 50 - 60 range, this car gets amazing mileage. I've been amazed at how often the gas engine is shut off and the car runs in EV mode. The transition is pretty seamless too. Disappointments: 1) My biggest gripe is that in order to switch the air flow to recirculating mode, you have to access a setting in a menu. I use this often when encountering dust or smoke, and it's much harder to switch via a menu than it would be with a mechanical switch. From the pictures I've seen, it appears that the 2023 model has resolved this issue. 2) The wireless phone charger is worthless. I'm lucky if my phone doesn't lose charge while on that charger! 3) My platinum model did NOT come with the digital rearview mirror. I really wanted this, but not sure how much I would use it as I wear glasses and the focal distance to the digital image is a bit too close unless I tilt my head back. 4) There are a lot of little rattles on rough roads... more than my 2006 4Runner had after 178k miles! 5) I'd like to be able to force the AWD system to be on under certain conditions. I barely made it to my friend's cabin due to the front wheels spinning in mud. 6) When the battery isn't fully charged and you downshift to slow down, the regenerative braking system should kick in but instead the engine is engaged. Overall I'm very happy with this car, but it could be better with some small changed. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

We got the highlander hybrid on March 7. That is the time when gas prices are above 4.00. Took it for a 400-mile drive to NYC. The car is quite nice, the first two rows are definitely quite spacious. The touch screen is very good and the controls are also very good. After 47500 miles and zero problems we traded the car to Carmax. Perhaps this is the most reliable and efficient car that we owned in 30+ years. No repair costs other than oil changes (which was under a plan with Toyota). It gives 32+ Mpg. We sold it for $37000 and purchased a BMW IX electric. I still miss the Toyota for its overall efficiency and low maintenance costs. It drives well on the highway. Very quiet and made many a BMW and Mercedes owner very upset when I overtake them. It can go quite fast up to 90 MPH. After that, it is not that comfortable. Acceleration is good but you have to plan when you overtake a vehicle. The top attraction for this vehicle is the gas mileage. It gave me 33 mpg on the round trip to NYC and I am quite sure that it will give 35 MPG soon. In these times that is exceptional. UPDATE: We bought the highlander hybrid in March 2022 after trading in a 2019 Mercedes 450 GLS. The highlander is no Mercedes but it offers tremendous value for money. The nicest things about the highlander are the outstanding 35+ MPG, the roominess and the updated technology such as the large monitor, nice backup camera etc. It takes some learning to effectively use the electric and ICE motors together but once you get the hang of it, the acceleration of the vehicle can surprise you. If you don't use it well the drone of the engine is not very pleasant. Pros: Outstanding MPG, nice interface and free two years maintenance. CONS: It is a little louder , and fit and finish has gone down when compared to earlier Toyotas, One Year Later: It has been 15+ months since we bought the Highlander. It has run 27000 miles and completed all the free services from Toyota! I love to drive the car on the highways when we go to NY and NJ. It can cruise comfortably at 80+mph and still gives 30 MPG. Hence we prefer this to our Toyota Sequoia which gives 13 MPG. Does not accelerate as quickly but very quite and silent. I have no complaints about the car and would certainly recommend it.
