2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Consumer Reviews

Sweet spot SUV
I need a full size SUV but I wanted to cut my gas and maintenance costs. I also wanted good tech. So I decided to give up my 510 hp 2017 Range Rover Sport and searched high and low for a fun and practical replacement. The Grand Highlander Hybrid Max fit the bill. It has tons of room for seating, cargo and safety. The 362 hp turbo 4 hybrid has enough power to drive with authority when you need it. Meanwhile the hybrid lets me get 30 mpg when I drive sensibly. I have been averaging 17 mpg for years on premium gas. Averaging 27 in my first 700 miles on regular is going to save me $2,000 a year on gas. Toyota reliability and its lower maintenance costs will also save me a ton. The pros are decent mileage on a powerful SUV. Tons of space. A useable 3rd row. Comfortable seats. Great tech. The sensors and cameras are helpful and responsive. Other vehicles have sensors that lag and cameras with unhelpful perspectives. The surround ghost view is awesome. The 12.3 screens are money! Love the dash options. The navigation and radio are sweet. Apple CarPlay works great through Bluetooth. There is a learning curve. It pays to read the manuals to get the most out of the tech. The traffic jam feature is very cool and cuts the stress and leg fatigue. The brake hold is cool. The auto high beam works well. I had to disable it on my prior vehicle. The ride is smooth for local and highway driving. Love the huge moon roof. Great views through the windows. Also the digital rear view mirror is excellent when the car is packed to the roof or full of passengers. Another pro is the body style. Not fancy, but clean look won’t look old in a couple of years like the flared regular Highlander. I keep cars for 7 years usually so I appreciate styling that looks good for the long haul. Also this looks better than the Lexus TX to me. I also appreciate Toyota for their history of reliable and durable vehicles. Cons: This is not an inexpensive vehicle. Tough to get a deep discount deal with so few available. Only one key available at purchase for supply chain reasons. Rear cover does not hide several inches behind the second row. Seat belt alarm is super obnoxious. All in all I am loving this balance of power, economy and features. After 20 years of gas guzzlers I have no mileage regrets.

Hybrid Max! - A Very Nice Ride!!
(Not sure why you/Edmund doesn’t list the "Hybrid Max" with 6A option; ??) Overall: LOVE the vehicle. Would love to have 8, or more gears, but it is NOT a CRT -- thank goodness. Quick drive (some tests show 5.7 or 5.9); passing time, from 60 to 90+ is instantaneous! Ride is quiet & smooth -- Lexus-like. Would appreciate: better brakes, tighter handling, less info-tech struggles. Finally received the 2nd FOB after 7 months of waiting. But, would purchase again. 4.5 rating; not quite a "5". [Note: "Platinum", AWD standard, but no listing here for H.M.] UPDATE > 21 FEB 2025: (complaint!) Toyota charges customers $15/month to use the Navigation System that's built into the vehicle! Overall vehicle rating: (still) 4.5 of 5.

So far, loving it!
Roomy, Comfortable, Quiet, Great MPG. A real looker. Fit and finish is nice, yes still early to say for sure, but right now, we'd purchase again. UPDATE: We traded in our trusted 2020 Highlander Limited AWD for a new Grand Highlander Limited Hybrid (Looking for the extra space and increased MPG's), and so far like the decision. Yes there are a few things about it that aren't great about it, like a bit noisy under power, would like it to be a bit quieter in general. We've had it 5 + months now, a few trips and 15,000 + miles I can say, we would purchase it again. IF this base hybrid was available in the Lexus TX, that would be in in the driveway instead, but we think the added MPG's and the fact this power train has been around some time now, this was the best choice for us right now

Still waiting
We like the car, handles well, cost efficient. However working with Toyota is not pleasant! Stressful situations because of Toyotas lies. When purchasing our Grand Highlander LX Hybrid we were told when we picked up the car that it would be a six week wait to get our 2nd key fob that comes with the vehicle. In 3 days it will be 4 months we have had this vehicle Last month when leaving on vacation we misplaced the one fob. We did arrange with Toyota service to get a replacement using our fob insurance. After arriving home we located the fob. It would now need to be reprogrammed. Bought to Toyota and they want to charge an additional $150.00 Sorry this is unacceptable. If I would have had the second fob as promised we would not have has to get a replacement fob. This also delayed our trip by 5 hours. I asked, so OK when do I get my fob from Toyota? Duh. We don’t know can be up to a year. Excuse me why was this not disclosed before the purchase was final. May not seem like much but when you pay over $50,000 for a car you want the truth about purchase. What else is Toyota not telling us?

Not so high on the Highlander
Roomy interior, great gas mileage and the car overall looks great. The issues are the electronics: -my wife and I can’t connect to the Apple Play rendering the entire sound system non-usable -the Toyota app is terrible, and only one person can connect to it - Toyota hasn’t purchased enough materials for the keys, so we were only given one pair and told to wait (going on 4 months now with one set of keys)
