This is a fun little car to drive. Never a problem parking or driving in the city. People are surprised at the amount of interior space. I love having everything built in to the center console. I like how high the seating position is. Plenty of room for tall passengers and driver. I even enjoy the occasional visits to the gas station! Ha Ha!

Decent Compromise Car

Ken, 02/03/2024
2002 Toyota ECHO 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl 4A)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

I bought my Echo a year-and-a-half ago with 112K miles when I was looking for an inexpensive small car for putting around, and was immediately disappointed to discover that it needed about $2500 in repairs to be brought up to snuff. This was my fault for not having the car thoroughly checked out by a mechanic before I bought it, but in my defense, I expected it to need some work, just not this much. My takeaway is that just because it's a Toyota without excessive mileage, doesn't mean that it will never need to be repaired. But after paying for the initial repairs, the car has been trouble-free, so I really can't complain. The only other repair it needed was to fix a slow leak in a tire that cost me all of $6. Meanwhile, knock on wood, the car has been quite reliable, and although I can't say that it's a joy to drive, it's not bad. It gets me from point A to point B fine, and yes, it has the advantages of maneuverability, ease of parking, and good gas mileage associated with a smaller car, without being cramped inside. There's actually a fair amount of interior and trunk space. Though, it is a smaller car with what feels to me like a sewing machine engine. As a smaller car, I doubt that it's the safest one on the road, and after all these years, I wouldn't be surprised if the airbags failed to deploy. Well, this is just one of the tradeoffs you make with a smaller, older car. But the sewing machine engine takes a little getting used to. The car will go highway speeds, and can pass other cars too, but it's far from a powerhouse. It's not even very peppy, which some smaller cars are. Of course, mine has the automatic transmission, and I'd imagine that the manual is peppier, but I like automatics and feel that my car only has adequate power--and no more. I have also discovered two unsafe features of the car. One, which others have mentioned, is that for some reason it's real easy to hit the accelerator when you want to hit the brake. Maybe the pedals are too close together, I don't know, but I did that a couple of times before I learned to be more careful in this car than I ever needed to be in other cars. The other unsafe feature, for me at least, is that the part of the body to which the windshield attaches on the driver's side easily prevents me from seeing pedestrians in a crosswalk just before they're in front of my car. I almost hit pedestrians in crosswalks twice simply because I didn't see them until I recognized this problem and learned to anticipate it. Again, I've never had this problem in other cars, so suspect that it's a design shortcoming of the Echo, but now that I'm aware of it, it's no longer a problem. I could care less about how stylish my car is, but I couldn't help noticing that many of the early reviews said that the Echo is ugly. That's not my sense. In fact, now that I'm an Echo owner, I'm in the habit of eyeballing other older Toyotas and trying to guess if they are Echos. Sometimes they are, but just as often they're a Yaris or even an early Corolla. I still can't always tell them apart. In fact, a neighbor has a late-1990s Corolla, and when I compare its specs with my Echo, I can't find much of a difference. (The Echo is a little taller and shorter, which are both features I prefer.) As far as I can tell, there's not much difference between the Echo and an older Corolla or Yaris, so I have no idea why those two models have been more popular than the Echo. Since I don't drive a lot, I'd like to give my ownership of the Echo a couple more years before I render a firm opinion. However, after plunking down the money for both the car and the initial repairs 18 months ago, I can't say that I'm disappointed with my Echo--or at least any more disappointed with it than I would be with any car in its class. Some of my gripes would apply to any smaller car, after all, and for other reasons (mostly space) I wanted a smaller car. More to the point, I'm not trying to sell my Echo, and if I did, I wouldn't have any idea what car to get instead. (Maybe another Echo?) My Echo is therefore fine for me, but I didn't and don't have super high standards. I knew when buying that I was making compromises about what I ideally wanted in a car and what I practically needed in one, and so far the Echo has turned out to be a decent compromise.

After 2 years I like the Echo as much as when I started with it. It responds quickly to steering inputs. It accelerates smoothly and strongly. Great turning radius and good visibility makes it so easy to park. Fuel economy is excellent. I agree that the car is not physically attractive, but that fades as an issue when you live with the Echo.

I purchased this car because I was traveling 136 miles daily to and from work. I don't know how Toyota made a car that is so peppy (it made me feel 10 years younger just driving it) yet so easy on gas (45mpg). It's a small car but it rides great. The trunk room is unbelievable and if you need more room the back seats fold down. I love the simplicity (fewer things to go wrong with it). I've added flames and white letter tires to spruce up the looks of it. I call it the little car nobody wanted because it had been on the car lot for several months and nobody wanted it because it had a manual transmission and the way it looked. Their loss, my gain!

Economical car, 30mpg avg, easily fits in tight parking spaces, pretty good around town. The ride is a little bumpy, and it's noisy at highway speed. Acceleration is OK for on ramps but a little underpowered for climbing hills.

I bought my 2002 ECHO brand new back in 2002. Over 6+ years later, she's still a winner. Not many vehicles can boast that after 5 years they are problem- free, reliable, economical and stylish. I am SO glad I decided on getting an ECHO. Still cute as ever. This car is a gem. Something ECHO owners know very well. Best car ever made, without a doubt.

The less features the less failures, keep it simple. My manual Echo does 41 mpg and accelerates faster than almost any V6. I carry 8 scuba tanks and two huge gearboxes in it. I can park two Echos on one car spot. Now it is over 90K and i never experienced any problems. Front wheel drive is safe and lightweight body can be easily pulled from mud if you occasionally adventured into dirtroad driving. It is certainly the best buy for $13K i spent on it.

This car is the best car for your money. It is so roomy and has so much storage it seems unnecessary to have the amount that it does. I have had 5 people in my car and everyone fits comfortably. I am also 6'8" and I fit in with no problem. Although the fuel economy is not what is listed (28 city) I think I drive too fast to get what is listed, but highway seems very good. Even though this car is small it can sustain a speed hovering around 80 mph. This car is great.

This is my favorite car of all time. Yes, very basic, but the most practical, friendly, and reliable vehicle I've ever driven, and I've driven mine for 350,000 miles over 20 years. Surprisingly roomy with a high seating angle and exceptional field of view for a subcompact. Every functional item is easy to use. Nothing interior has broken in 20 years except a couple of interior light bulbs. Engine is incredibly easy to maintain and reliable. I believe Toyota abandoned this design because it was "too good."

Gas is practically free, repairs are stupidly cheap and rarely needed, always starts, even that time it was encased in about 2 inches of ice. For city driving, I can't imagine a better car. It picks up fast from stopped at a light and is easy to fit into any parking space. With decent snow tires I know I'll be the one who can still leave the house when everyone else is stuck in snow or can't start their car. On highways, well if it's not windy it's fine. The wind though....car almost blows off the road in moderate winds. Even the wind displacement from oncoming traffic shakes the car. After 21 years of service in salty, snowy Canada, my faithful Echo has become too corroded to go on. It still has the original engine and heater which are both going strong. I spent maybe $1,000 on repairs in the 5 years I've owned it, while the car was aged 16-21. I'm still driving it while I look for a replacement. It feels like saying goodbye to a best friend.

I have a 2000 Echo. The interior is what sold me on the Echo. I am not quite 5ft and the placement of the gauges is very pratical. You are sitting high so no pillows for seeing over the steering wheel. Now it may not be the best car but if a low price is a priority , well it is hard to beat. It is peppy and no more than manditory maint needed

I test drove several cars in its price range, while some where cheaper and others had better base bells and whistles, it was the quality construction of the vehicle and tightness of the drivetrain that won me over. I'd rather have a car that will last 20 years than an engine that wears out before the power windows.

This echo is more fun to drive than my v6 2001 honda coupe. The pickup is amazing and it will leave bigger cars at the stop lights. The vtec engine has plenty of power. It handles well and rides like a jewel with no road noise. I am getting over 41 miles per gallon. It runs the 0 to 60 faster than the camry v6. Most standards rubber band at slow speeds in low or second gear.(surging). The echo is the only manual that does not rubber band.

I bought this car new back in 2002 and quite frankly it was the first foreign car I've ever purchased. I always bought from GM, and at the time of purchase, the "Big Three" were making only gas guzzlers (the Geo Metro was phased out). So I was very apprehensive about buying foreign. Wow, my fears were unfounded. This car runs and runs and runs. I've got 80000 miles on it and the only thing I've done is put gas in it and change the oil every 6 months religiously. Absolutely no problems, not even a sensor light has come on. Love this car - would recommend this car to anyone - and I have, and two people have purchased this car used and they love it as well.

I just can't say enough about this little gem. What I "sacrifice" in luxury and styling (and not a big sacrifice, it's a conveyance, not a living room!) I make up in performance and fuel economy. I have had this car for 4 years and have, admittedly, been pretty rough with it. I haven't yet had it in the shop except for yearly inspections. Recently, on a long, flat, straight trip, I traveled 500 miles on a tank of gas. I estimate the tank to be about 11 gallons so you do the math! 5 people can fit comfortably and the trunk space is phenomenal. It's easy to park and easy to drive. If you want a reliable car and feel responsible for environmental impact, this is the way to go

Love my Echo! I previously had a Dodge Pickup. I wanted something that got great gas mileage and also had a little bit of room. Echo was a great alternative to to the more expensive Hybrids. I never get less than 39 miles to the gallon (although I always use 93 octane gas). Echo is also very safe. I had an accident on the interstate in May where I was going about 40mph and hit the car in front of me (it was a 5 car accordian crash and I was the last one). The car abaorbed all the blow and I wasn't hurt or sore at all. I will soon be testing my Echo out when I drive it to Alaska in January. I have lived there before and think it will do well.

We have had nothing but good luck with our Echo. We get an average of 38 miles to the gallon and we have kept track of it since we bought the car. It is great! It fits my 6'5" father in the back seat no problem and let me tell you there are few cars that can do that. You feel like you are attached to the road which is something my husband and I really like. It has great turning radius! It is just plain cute! We live in a very snowy state and it hasn't had any more trouble than other cars. We feel like we are doing our part to reduce gas use. I wish more people would do that because we do have a hard time finding our car in the parking lot with all the huge cars surrounding it.

It has a neat, fairly unique style; incredible interior room (for a 6'-2" person, that's a huge plus :-)); a very smooth, quiet ride (especially in comparison to my old Ford Festiva!); marvelously panoramic driver's view; wonderful get- up-and-go; and the mileage is terrific. The 6-speaker CD system is great, as are all the storage niches throughout the car. My highest recommendation to this little giant!

I love this little Echo! I have owned many cars over the years--VW's, Hondas, Fords, small, big and hot cars too. I test drove Saturn, Nissan, Hundai & Civic before choosing the Echo. The seating height, visibility and interior design is ideal for me at 5ft, 2" tall, but my 5' 10", 270 lb boyfriend drives it too. It is much more comfortable to get in and out of than the others. The bucket seats are the most comfortable and the gas mileage is great! I paid $11,400 for the car new(4-door) including air conditioning and power steering. Test drive before you rule it out. Read Consumers Reports 2002 Auto Edition. They highly recommended it.

The reviewer said the Echo suffers from cartoon- like styling. I say that's the whole idea. My Echo is like driving a cartoon. Never have I had a vehicle with absolutely *no* features--mine doesn't even have power steering--that is so delightful. It's so impressive, it's a joy to drive. Just bought it last week with 16k miles. I [a designer] am quite impressed with all the thought that went into making this car, at it's most stripped-down level, really neat. The driving environment is wonderful, it's plenty big inside, it floats down the road effortlessly and with a smile. And the best thing: with a basic, used car my expectations were low. So I am overjoyed. Hope that helps.

I bought this car because I was looking for the cheapest new car available. I had owned an '81 Tercel and I loved it. I figured the Echo took up where the Tercel left off. I loved the Echo immediately. 40 mpg, no trouble, fast, lots of fun to drive. Have a hard time not speeding with the get up and go manual transmission. If I can manage to get 3 kids' carseats into the back seat (which will be difficult, but possible) I'll never get rid of it. I might get laughed at because of the way the car looks, but I laugh every time I pass a gas station full of gas guzzling SUVs in the urban jungle. It's too bad they're not making Echo's anymore. It's a great little car.

What can I say? I just love my Echo! I've never owned a car that I was so proud to drive, and this is just my third car in 25 years. I've had her 3 years now and every day still brings joy and excitement. Although I'm retired and don't put in the long miles, she still gets excellent mileage. I would highly recommend the Echo to anyone who wants a no-frills reliable, cute car. If I had to do it again, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I love this car so much my sister said my idea of Heaven would be to have only Echos up there. :)

NO PROBLEMS,GREAT GAS MILEAGE,INSTRUMENTS ARE WHERE THEY SHOULD BE,SOLID BUILD, THE CAR HAS A TENDANCY TO ROLL AROUND A BIT IN AN OFF CANTER TURN AT 100 MPH.BUT ITS SOMETHING YOU LEARN TO LIVE WITH.

I bought my Echo new in '02. I've had NO problems or repairs since I bought the car. My friends and family (all SUV owners) snickered when I originally bought the car. I'm the one laughing now with the gas mileage I get and with gas prices climbing to what they are. A great value in this car!

Great Commuter Car

I bought this car almost a year ago to commute back and forth to college. I am getting 37 mpg on average(not too bad). There has been no problems for the first 18500 miles. Acceleration with the 5 speed is suprisingly good. I put on aftermarket 16" TRD wheels with low profile tires. This helped the horrible handling a lot. Overall, great commuter.

I bought this car mainly for its comfortable seating and of course for Toyota reliability. I like this car over all. But I am not very happy for the following reasons: Its low speed braking is good but at high speeds (say above 50 mph) its braking is very poor and I am much concerned to drive on highways. Especially for applying sudden brake. I never got gas mileage more than 33 mpg on highways. In the city I usually get about 28 mpg. So I am disappointed with its gas mileage.

Bought the car specifically for commuting(gas mileage) it turned to be great..the car has 11.9 gal tank and I get about 400 miles to tank and thats going 80 mph everywhere. I also travel alot of dirst roads around so I developed a window alignment problem fixed by dealer... overall great commuter car highly recommend it

Great Mileage, Powerful, Unique

The engine in this car is hot. It out accelerates the Ford Focus ZX3 (130 hp engine) I used to have, and gets 38 mpg vs the 25 mpg the ZX3 automatic got. The airconditioner is plenty cold. The ride is smooth and quiet up to 80mph. The suspension is more like a sports car - compliant but firm, with grippy tires (the 175's stick pretty darn good). The only quality control issue is a tiny wind whistle on the driver's side at high speeds - otherwise, famous Toyota quality at a bargain price.

I bought my 2002 Echo new. I once love it so much. It has accompanied me for almost 14 years. Even now, I have still had it in my garage. As I have aged and become financially stronger, I realized I might have made a wrong choice on buying it 14 years ago. It's too light as a vehicle. Even it costs more for car insurance. Overall, it is an okay-subcompact. As an entry-level Toyota, it's quality is good. So far, my Echo has died on me three times. I have put 155000 miles on it.

Outside side mirrors should be bigger

My little Echo is great, however there should be an inside control pad for the outside side mirrors. I noticed that this feature would be great as backing up or changing lanes you want to see the whole picture, the outside mirrors are small so I find that I have to look over my should a lot more especially when changing lanes. I looked into having a control pad installed and they informed me that it would cost me a bundle as they would have to redo the computer chip set and wiring.

Although this vehicle's styling may be a little hard to get used to at first, I personally fell in love with it. It makes for an attractive car that doesn't look like the average cheeply made subcompact. In addition, it proves to be a reliable car that has good pick-up and is fun to drive. The only feature I wish it had was power locks, and perhaps power mirrors (which, by the way, some swear that the Echo has never come with, but were in the one that I test-drove).
