2025 Toyota Crown Signia Limited 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
Toyota has made a really nice-looking, useful and premium vehicle, if a bit overpriced. We've put 2K miles on ours including two long(ish) trips and are pleased with it. We also test drove a Lexus 350h and were completely underwhelmed.
The Crown Signia has the same powertrain as the Lexus and IMO drives exactly the same just a slightly lower body style. Important note: These are … hybrids. If you like a smooth quiet burst of power on the accelerator you're not going to get that with the Crown Signia (or the Lexus RX350h). These powertrains are for fuel mileage. So far we are averaging 33 MPG on the highway and slightly better than that in town. Hopefully that ticks up a bit. Side note: Crown Signia can run on regular unleaded gas, Lexus RX350h requires premium unleaded.
These cars have Toyota's eCVT which has been around a long time and is known to be bullet proof. Other manufacturers use weaker CVT transmissions. That said, many people don't like the engine RPMs and noise you get on hard acceleration since the shifting is continuous and not perceptible. Again, this is a hybrid. If you drive hard you'll hear the engine. If you drive like a soccer mom you won't hear it much at all.
The suspension gives a respectably smooth ride on our 21 inch wheels (Toyota why so big?), I felt it was on par with the Lexus. Handling is tight but you won't confuse it with a sports car.
The interior is generally well done and important controls operate with buttons. We have the black seats and I would say the tan leather seats have a more premium appearance and are the way to go. I do appreciate the ventilated seats but I could use a little more powerful ventilation on the highest setting. The seats are more comfortable than your average Toyota but that's a low bar.
The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) and lane tracing assist (LTA) means on the highway the car can essentially steer itself--don't worry you're still in charge--and manages the distance between traffic ahead. Not to be confused with self-driving but works quite well on 4 lane highways. 2 lane highways not as much since it seems to want to hang a little too close to the center line for my liking.
It has many camera views and the camera rear view mirror gives a nice, clear wide angle. Apple Carplay works wirelessly, haven't tested Android Auto. My wife puts her phone in the wireless charging bay and displays Waze on the large Crown Signia touchscreen no problem.
Be prepared, especially with the Advanced Tech package, to invest some time learning the features you paid for. It's a serious collection of technology and features.
Now my complaints: First, no spare tire. I understand why, but the real offense by Toyota is not making a space under the cargo deck that can FIT a spare tire should you buy one. Feels like an unforced error by Toyota. Second, while the interior quality is good, and the seats are good, I feel like they could even be a bit better for the money. Third, paddle shifters have no useful purpose and should not exist in this car. Fourth, in Sport mode (Limited trim), the car actually amplifies the engine noise through the speakers. Not kidding. I used an OBDII adapter and software to turn this off.
These complaints are rooted in head-scratching decisions by Toyota but I still consider them all as minor. As I said, we are pleased with the car so far. We rate it 4.7 out of 5 stars.
