Fun all-weather crossover commuter

morin2, 10/21/2011
2011 Suzuki SX4 Crossover 4dr Hatchback AWD (2.0L 4cyl 6M)

My sx-4 crossover has the 6-speed MT, the first 6 speed I have had - and I really enjoy having that extra gearing for high speed interstates. My normal commute is 55 miles each way and its mostly in 5th gear. The fuel economy is much better than claimed. I usually get 31-32 mpg commuting using E10 fuel but a little better now with the AC off. I got a high of 35.7 on an interstate trip with ethanol-free fuel. I have the base model with nothing that I don't want. The base model lacks cruise control and I am fine with that. I prefer to have features that I'll actually use. I didn't realize until I drove it home just how great the visibility is on this car - great for merging to the right!

Wonderful little car

With 150 hp on tap as opposed to its rivals (Nissan Versa Note, 108hp, Honda Fit, 117hp and Mazda 2, 100 hp), this little buggy will get up and scoot! And it has a six, count 'em SIX speed manual transmission! I was looking for a car with a manual to use as a commuter, and was able to buy this 2010 (in 2016) with 71K on it for $2700! I was pretty happy, let me tell you. It has been a blast to drive, even though in central Illinois the roads are pretty straight and flat. The clutch take-up is p-e-r-f-e-c-t and the shifter is smooth and creamy - the nicest and easiest manual I think I've ever driven. I think the Italian design is attractive/cute and this thing zips in and out of traffic lanes and parking spots with ease. I have yet to reach it's handling limits, but will tell you they're very high. This is like a reliable version of the Mini (which has pathetic reliability and costs much, much more). The only things with which I take issue on the car are the sun visors that don't tilt forward enough and block my view (and let sunlight in on the sides) and poor AM radio reception. That, and parts being a little tougher to find since Suzuki (cars) left the country. Still plenty of parts available if you search hard enough, though - and oil filters, air filters, plugs etc are pretty standard sizes so super easy to find. Oh, and insurance is a bit high - higher than my wife's '14 Honda CR-V, for some reason. MPG has been good for me - about 31 mixed 60/40 hwy/city. Plenty of front seat room - I'm 6' tall and 230 lbs and don't feel the least bit crowded - plenty of fore/aft and up/down adjustment. Rear seat room does look tight on legroom, though - so it's probably best for short trips for adults or for mini-me's. After doing my research, the only problem areas on these seem to be an errant airbag light (covered under recall), and the A/C compressor clutch. Most genuine Suzuki's are bulletproof (not the Suzuki-named Daewoo models like Verona, Forenza, etc. though). Anyway, this is my commuter and I'm getting to work with a big grin on my face (not that I'm happy to be at work) and looking forward to my next drive - it's seriously THAT fun.

114,000 miles Feb 2019 and going strong

My experience has been that with proper maintenance, this car is solid. Just the usual.... tires, brake pads, fluid changes.Finding parts has not been a problem. I replaced plugs at 100,000, and the old ones looked good... but I'm old, and think 100,000 miles is a lot to ask. Changing serpentine belt this week for the first time. Brakes are simple to work on with basic tools. I had a 2010, but a deer committed suicide on the highway. Hit it at 65 MPH. Front end crumpled, Big buck was killed & tossed a long way... I walked away without a scratch... crumple zones & air bags worked, and I always wear the safety belt. I was so impressed that I bought a 2012. The seating position is upright & to me, very comfortable. I drive a 20 mile commute each day, and long vacation trips. a very good & practical car... wish they still sold them in USA.

I have owned other vehicles and dollar for dollar Suzuki rocks the things that are important to me, reliability, safety and great gas mileage. We have a SX4 Crossover and an Xl7 currently and total cost of ownership per year, including insurance and maintenence is less than 1200.00 for both of them. They have the highest safety ratings in their class and I never have to do anything but wiper blades, tires and brake pads, ever. I recommend Suzuki for Colorado driver's who investigate and find the best car for their money

The Best Kept Secret Small Car

The SX4 is a great all around general purpose vehicle, especially the Crossover. This car is heavy, solid, and handles great when driving around twisty back roads. Suzuki is biased towards building great handling cars rather then simply ones that accelerate fast. The SX4 Crossover is NOT an economy car. It easily weighs over 3000 with a driver and full tank of fuel. This is a vehicle that tries to do everything well and succeeds. Some cars just do one thing well, like a Prius getting great mileage or a Wrangler being good in the middle of the woods. You will get fed up with that when you need a car that does something else. The SX4 is that very car, and a reliable one.

Overall, the Suzuki SX4 Crossover has to be one of the most underrated cars on the market and a terrific value. This car was a few thousand dollars less than a comparably priced Subaru Impreza or Toyota Matrix. The looks inside and out won't blow you away but are more than adequate. This car handles well, is fun to drive, and has a smooth quiet ride.I am currently averaging about 26.5 MPG combined city and highway. One of the biggest complaints that I consistently read about from other owners was the quality of the radio. Initially, I agreed but later found that the radio bass and treble controls were set to zero. Once that was corrected the sound quality was much improved. I love my Suzuki!

My father and I co-own this car, bought new, to handle the treacherous roads of Pittsburgh in the winter. It handles very sporty, good tire grip, great in turns. Mileage was a dismal 16 MPG in Pa., but since moving to Florida, now getting 27.6 MPG, but all level driving. Feels roomy up front, tight in rear, and more cargo room than a sedan, but not as good as it could be (fold flat rear seat needed!). Peppy around town and on highway, CVT does a good job. Interior is rather bland and radio quality is poor. But my biggest gripe is regarding the front "A" pillars... causes DANGEROUS blind spots. Poor design on that, and must lean forward and back to see around them. Seats are hard too.

When I studied engineering 30 years ago, one of the first things we were taught was to make frequently serviced components easily accessible. Obviously the engineers at Suzuki did not go to the same university !, try changing the cigarette lighter fuse, you have to dismantle the facia or be a contortionist, try to replace the oil filter, almost impossible to undo and retighten without special tools ! Love the car but hate working on it, also a problem with the paint on the hood, measles !!! Suzuki maintain that they are stone chips despite no similar spots on the guards etc. Suzuki aftersales service SUCKS.

This is an AMAZING car! If you live somewhere with lots of snow and ice, the awd lock is your best friend! feels like there isn't even any snow under your car when driving! It looks great, and My big tall 6'5" self fit in it with plenty of room to spare. Has more space for the driver than my Camry, which was my previous car. I can also, unfortunately, attest to the unbelievable safety of this car. I got in a head-on crash at about 50 mph with a large Infiniti. all the doors still opened after the crash, and the only injury i sustained was a small burn on my arm from the airbag opening and rubbing against it. I already miss my little SX4 :( I might even buy another one with my insurance check

I purchased my SX4 AWD for zipping around town safely and to go up to my cabin in Big Bear on the weekends, in fact, when going up to the mountans, I don't have to place chains on the tires when snowing, saving me time and hassle. The All-Wheel-Drive system works perfectly!!! The car drives great, very comfortable seats that sit up high and give me a very secure feeling. And with 8 airbags, I'm very comfortable placing my family in the car. I did a lot of reserch before buying, based on the value, safety ratings, and Consumer Reports recommendation, my choice was very easy. I have nearly 60k miles on it and never had a problem other than routine maintenance.

The car has been simple to own, the maintenance schedule is easy with the timing chain instead of belt ( as seen on more expensive cars), the oil changes every 7500 miles, with a special we got free a maintenance package. Suspension is better than any other comparably priced compact sedan, even better than one I drove costing almost 10k more. It feels heavier really secure at all speeds, corners well. Overall the 150 hp engine is enough with manual 6 speed (I test drove automatic and it was also adequate), but not as much fun. The car gets attention, people always like the styling. For a small car there's a lot of head and leg room even in back, overall it was the best choice

This is the first car that I have bought brand new and it is very reliable. Just do your own schedule maintenance and the car will not give you no issues at all. I have 78,000 miles and the car runs good just the temperature a/c sensor sometimes work and sometimes do not and the gps broke due to extremely high temperatures but besides that no issues at all.

The Suzuki SX4 Sport is for the ordinary person who wants a car that is priced right. The car looks good and drives well. The cvt is a plus. I have just driven 100 miles without any problems. The car runs a ruff and you will notice this at idle. With the sports wheels you will feel the road bumps. The car does not leak when I drove it through the car wash. Do I recommend it? Yes! The price is the point of sale for this car. So go for it, the car is peppy and a good starter and commuter car. Some sports car enthusiasts will also like this car. 3-16-10 -Oasis

Bought this car new in 2011 and the only problem which was covered under the drivetrain warranty was the rear axle seals. There were no recalls on this car so far and that is very rare. Right now you can practically steal one because people think you cant get parts, but that is not the case. It is a very slow car to get up to speed so you have to stomp the gas pedal, so if you plan on highway driving not a good choice. I do my own mechanical work and the car is easy to work on except the oil change is a little tricky. Grab a used one if you can

Everything was great till it wasn't. It was a preowned car. I got it on 2014 and everything was working perfectly till 2022 when the transmission started dying. It has been so reliable and economical that I'm going to replace the transmission. That will cost about 3K and to get another car will be 5 to 8 times more. It's a small, fuel efficient car but the transmission not even pass the 120K miles.

I never write reviews but this time i am trying to apprise others about this good car. I have been driving cars from around 14 yrs, driven cars of varied types in multiple cities and multuple countries. I wanted to buy a new car and took test drive of multiple vehicles including Hyundai, Hondas, Nissans and finally ended up buying Suzuki Sx4 Sedan. I have this car only for 4 days and i really liked it, its manual drive, It has all the features you need ina car, including 8 airbags. Most importantly, car runs very fast and smooth. Zip and energy in car this car is impressive, sound system is good. I like the car in and all. currently mileage 30 should certainly improve aftr Iservice

This car has been the easiest car to own, with specials etc. I have no out of pocket cost for maintenance, it gets better gas mileage than estimated. I average 32 mpg mixed driving. Drives and handles like a more expensive European car, volvo s40-ish. The power is highest in its class with 150 hp and it's great, very peppy. Its very comfortable and interior/exterior fit, finish and style are top notch and it doesn't look for feel cheap like the other compact sedans I considered buying. This car is worth a look, you'll be surprised as I was, its awesome and very reliable, never had one problem

It was a fluke that we happened upon this car. In the market for a new VW Golf originally. On the way to pick up the Golf, we passed by Suzuki, the SX4 caught our eye,we stopped in for a last minute look. The styling, wheels and features had us nearly sold on it before driving it. Once we drove it, that sealed the deal. It was way more sophisticated than a Honda, Toyota etc. and was much funner to drive than the Golf, not to mention $6K cheaper, better warranty and more features. I do agree with the other reviews in that it could use leather, sunroof and heated seats, like you can get on Corollas, but Suzuki had to leave some room for improvement I suppose.

Our family went shopping for a new vehicle (wanted to upgrade from our 2012 crossover hatchback LE? auto with manual shift option, AWD, and 4wheel drive option). What we discovered was we already owned the vehicle we were shopping for. No other compact car available in Canada has AWD and 4x4 option. The biggest complaint I have, even though I'm petite and fit the car wonderfully, is the seats are uncomfortable. I struggle to drive or even be a passenger for longer than 20 minutes. Also the climate control... 😞 ohhh the climate control... let me just say... it leaves much much much to be desired. I have owned it since it was 3 years old, and it's performed poorly since day 1. Oh and oil changes.... whoever decided to put the oil filter in that spot... should perhaps consider a new department to work in. But we've had no problems with mechanical, leaky rear differential seal.. and just regular maintenance. It is kinda gutless, but it's 4 cylinders, and the manual shift option is great for passing.

This is a pretty bland car that lacks important creature comforts and is surprisingly small. At first it feels large but once you put 4 adults in you realize how small it really is. We bought this car because we had a baby on the way. The trunk barely fits the baby stroller and the passenger seat has to be moved all the way forward to accommodate the baby seat. This car gets very poor MPG, isn't fun to drive, and isn't very large. The only real redeeming feature I can think of is the AWD which is pretty capable even in very nasty weather. It's not a bad car, it's just very mediocre but it doesn't cost much money.

I bought a 2011 Suzuki Sx4 new in 2012 I kept noticing a sweet chemical smell whenever the air conditioner or defrost was being used. I contacted my Suzuki dealer and they said they had dealt with this problem with other Suzuki's and thought it was related to the vapor coming back into the vent so they ran the hose to a different area and said it should be fixed. The next time I drove the car and used the air conditioner the antifreeze smell was there again. I contacted Suzuki and they said that they had done all they could and sent me to Arbitration. Suzuki told Arbitration that the car was working as designed and they said there was nothing more that they would do for me .

We own two 2011 Suxuki SX4 Crossovers, one with CVT, the other with the manual transmission. Both are worthy performers in both dry and inclimate weather. I've done several 600 mile days in both cars and found them more comfortable than many full size cars. I particularly appreciate the i4wd system which allows for either 2wd or 4wd operation. In snow deeper than the rocker panels I had no problem with traction, steering, or braking. Both cars are averaging well over 28 MPG in town, which is quite a bit higher than the EPA estimated mileage.

We bought a brand new SX4 Crossover AWD Technology in Copper last month after having the transmission go out on our Hyundai. After looking at a variety of different cars, my wife saw one of these in the parking lot at Walmart and instantly came home and researched it on the internet. The next day, we went and test drove one. We love the spacious interior, excellent gps, cruise control, power everything, and the beautiful copper color. Selectable All wheel drive is a bonus, as is the CVT transmission with manual shifting ability. The Crossover rides smoothly, but tends to have some body lean and sometimes spongy feel. The engine is powerful, but only above 3,000 RPM. Overall, good car

This has been a fun car to drive on a daily basis. Though its a naturally aspirated four cylinder, it has a lot of low end torque and the manual six speed uses the power well. It keeps right up with more powerful engines, the 150 horsepower is plenty. It handles way better than the other comparable vehicles I considered, and feels more solid and safe. The only things I think would make it better would be the option of a sunroof and leather. I had those installed, so for me I couldn't ask for more! The styling is also top notch, designed in Italy, it gets a lot of compliments.

Compared it to other compact cars, from cheap up to almost $30K this car impressed me most with performance & options, the low price was just an added bonus. I found it funner, more solid feeling than a Golf that cost $8K more, more features than mazda3, better looking than a civic!

Bought a base crossover model used at 8 years old and 150k miles for a little under US$ 5k, and in two years I've put about 15k miles on it. It's required minimal maintenance despite being the oldest-at-purchase car I've gotten (all I've done is replaced the breaks which were worn down when I bought it), has run smoothly. I love this thing. Okay, first, the not-so-good: - A-pillars are large and can be annoying to look past. - Door bins are a bit small. - Cargo space is what you'd expect for a car this small. - Suzuki withdrew from the North American auto market in 2013 so depending on where you are you might end up waiting for some parts. The good: - firm suspension lets you feel the road without being uncomfortable. - the manual transmission is smooth and feels solid - the engine has plenty of pep - the AWD system is about as capable as it gets outside of vehicles that are specifically intended as off-roaders. - fuel economy is better-than advertized: with mixed highway and city, fwd and awd driving, I pretty reliably average between 28 and 32 mpg. - reliabilty: seriously, it's kind of amazing how little work I've had to put into a vehicle that was 8 years old and over 150,000 miles at purchase. - pretty decent carrying capacity for a car this small. - the flipside of Suzuki no longer selling cars in the US & Canada: these cars depreciate which means they are cheap used relative to other cars of comparable age, quality, and capability.

I love this car. It's reliable, comfortable, a blast to drive with the CVT with manual mode. Style wise, very European in flair which I like and gets tons of compliments, my neighbor who drives a 09 VW Jetta, is in love with my SX4, and is trading her 09 Jetta on an 2010 sx4 on Tuesday. The gas mileage is actually better than its rated, I average 33 mpg. Steven Suzuki is amazing, the best customer service I've ever had, even better than the Mercedes dealership where I bought my MBZ at. I don't even miss my C220!

This is a disposable car, spend a little extra for a better car! Dont make my mistake. with less then 100,000 miles I went through 4 sets of brakes, inner tie-rod, water pump, rear wheel assembly, 2 Catalytic Converter, O2 sensor. Ive never gotten better then 25 mpg.

Garbage right from the starting gate! CVT was overheating and went into 2wd survival mode continually. Brakes were dragging from the getgo! Had to get new disk brakes all round. Bearings started getting noisy at year two. Replaced all bearings as well as brakeshoes. Transmission became very noisy! Alternator had to be replaced 3 times! Cowling directing ram air through the radiator into the throttle body just became detached and overheated! Had to use duct tape to reconnect. Alternator is located next to front wheel so vulnerable to street debris! When cowling became disconnected the engine combined with the hot running transmission fried many electrical wires! Blooming pity duct tape can’t fix the CVT transmission! Stranded twice because of alternator malfunctions! Eleven years of torture! Use it as a paper weight sitting in the driveway as the wheels are locked up and it couldn't be towed away. Starter motor will not turn over. Painted lemon on the car. Absolutely disgraceful considering in 2011 I paid $30,000 for the vehicle. It wasn't cheap. At times it was fun to drive when it worked. What a insult to japanese auto manufacturing business. I am sure the japanese would be furious if this crapmobile were to be distributed in Japan.:(

This is my wife's new car. She loves it. She traded in her pickup for it due to heavy driving. It drives Very well and has good get up and go. The built-in GPS is a genius way to have one without needing a super expensive radio. So far my wife loves it. We were looking for a an SUV or minivan for her, but she saw it and said, "this one's cute." The price is also right for a new car. The dealer was very good and positive. We were also surprised with the $300 gas card! If you're looking for a nice small vehicle, definitely check it out. There is one caveat however. I am 5'9" and I can't find a comfortable driving position. This is meant for shorter drivers.

Bought used, with 12k. After 31,000+ miles on this sx4 hatch, parked outdoor, we say say wow. Dependable, driven 6days per week 14miles daily. Now at 64k. Not much spent on repairs, other than basic maintenance. The transmission switch ,as I understand needs replacement, preventing car from starting..had issued fing car battery dead a few times this year. Battery was replaced 3x by AAA. Hope all will be well. These past 2 years car sits outside without being used, bad. We will now drive it more often, as it is not primary vehicle. Love this SX4 still. Color dk grey looking hansome.

If you're shopping for a sporty compact, test drive one an you'll be sold. Sx4 is fun, feels like a more expensive small sports compact, think a4/ jetta/ s40 but at a fraction of the cost. I was considering a jetta, my wife liked the mini Cooper, but after contemplating we landed at 2 Suzuki sx4s, one hatch back (cuter than a Cooper) and a sedan with the se package. We traded in a Civic and insight, and were glad to be rid of those two. The sx4s are way ahead of Honda in this segment, not to mention way better looking :) both have been a dream to own, not one complaint.

Bought it used in 2012, with 12K on the odometer. Gave it to my nephew last year with 122K. AWD, CVT. When given away, it still had the original axles, cv joints, fuel pump, power steering pump, and rack, water pump, throttle body and radiator. During 11 years it never once failed to start or get me there. Routine maintenance only. No engine lights ever, Great in snow, and not bad on ice. It got cramped on the 215 mile run to St Louis, 2 city and 28 highway were disappointments, but then again I ran it in AWD every day the time I owned it. Clearcoat on hood gave up when the car was around 6 years old. Theoretically, the CVT is a weak link, but I serviced it regularly. Suzuki parts are getting a little scarcer. And the AC needed recharging every couple of years. Those are mostly nitpicks. It was overall a car which greatly exceeded expectations.
