still feeling the love mostly - 71,000 mile review

Purchased the WRX after test-drive & reading reviews of WRX and WRX STI - I liked the STI's acceleration, handling, and in particular the brakes, but did not care for the appearance of fin or chassis stiffness. As a 40+ yr old, I was looking for a car that was fun, but non-descript in a corporate parking lot and comfortable as a commuter/pick up the kids vehicle. I've driven the WRX 71K+ miles, purchased new, and live in the Colorado foothills, windy road. It is a blast! The car is very light; braking and acceleration = very responsive. I'm 6'2 200 lbs. After nearly 4 years of ownership, I enjoy the vehicle enough to intend to keep using it for daily transportation likely for another 2 years; the maintenance items below have been completed, and I cannot find a vehicle to upgrade to that retains the AWD and manual transmission (Audi why don't you offer manual transmissions in the S4 or S5?? BMW, what gives with the M2 and M3 not offering xDrive??) Four concerns about the car overall -- 1) clutch was replaced @ 46K miles. This is the 3rd manual transmission that I've owned, have driven approx. 100,000 miles with manual cars prior to purchasing the WRX. This seems soon for the clutch to go. "burning" smell when shifting gears since the car was almost new when first driven in the morning. 2) The car sold to me in Colorado came with summer tires that were not marked as such & this was not mentioned at the dealership; had some very slippery experiences in early winter before parking the car until replacement all-season tires could come in & be installed. Subaru replaced the tires. 3) A/C stops working in summer after awhile when the car is parked at 46K miles, compressor just had to be replaced at 71K miles. There is a technical bulletin on this, indicating it is a known issue with this vehicle. So, these may just be fairly normal maintenance issues, spouse drives '14 Forester XT (automatic) purchased new, has not experienced any of these issues in 4 years of ownership.

Lots of good things in this WRX

I had one of the original 2002 WRX cars and loved it. The trouble was that stock it had way too much squishy rubber to satisfy any potential buyer. New motor/trans mounts, ALK, smaller brake booster, and a bunch more urethane parts finally made it feel like a sports sedan. The 2015 feels like a sports sedan right out of the box. I hear people complain about road and wind noise, but don't find it to be an issue at all. My wife and mom don't find the ride too harsh, which surprised me. It's definitely firm, but not jarring.

If absolute refinement is non-negotiable, the WRX is not for you. Don't bother reading any more reviews - go and buy a VW GTI! Subaru have built a great car, but it is one with compromises. Ride quality is firm to rough. Wind and road noise (OEM-equipped Dunlop Sport Maxx RT rubber to blame) tend toward the higher end of the spectrum. Interior fit and finish is lacking. The cable-linkage shifter-feel is rubbery, loose and inconsistent. Throttle mapping is anything but linear - closer to binary or step function; expect a herky-jerky ride if less-than-spirited acceleration is demanded. Rev-hang is quite pronounced in 1st or 2nd gear, requiring slow clutch release when shifting while driving slowly (think stop-and-go traffic). My early manufacturing cycle specimen has a heavy clutch, necessitating greater finesse while shifting (this seems to have been fixed later on based upon driving a friend's late-2015 WRX). Steering is tight but somewhat vague. The general feel of the WRX gives the impression of a bigger, heavier car. All that said, I wouldn't trade the WRX. The car driven is a raw experience but the extra effort required to drive it smoothly is very rewarding. Every (non-stop-and-go) commute is a blast; every heel-toe or shift nailed perfectly or the wave of acceleration following the lag leaves a grin plastered wide across my face. With the inevitable winter storms here in the midwest, inclement weather is joyfully anticipated once the Blizzaks have been slapped in place. Passenger comfort is quite good. Cargo space is sufficient for short car-camping trips for four. Fuel economy is solid at 27 mpg mixed. The WRX covers all bases while offering great entertainment as a daily driver.

The Limited in stunning World Rally Blue is a work of art. A true drivers car. I am 6'2 275 lbs and plenty of room for me front and back. Excellent seats and position of controls. Superb build quality and extensive use of lightweight body panels. Engine sound and performance is designed for those who are truly drivers. Clutch feel is progressive and light enough for all day city driving. Turn in and braking is spot on. Dunlop performance rubber is a good choice. No needs for any after market upgrades. Many comments about Clarion radio..Simple reset of some settings solve this.Check on line for tweaks. Road noise is evident on anything less than smooth asphalt. Could be the tires.

Traded in my 2008 wrx, manual for the 2015 CVT. Wanted an automatic, was delighted to hear the new WRX was in auto, even if a CVT. Love it. Boring in regular mode, fantastic in sport #. Use it mostly in the middle performance mode for everyday driving. Lots of road noise, very still suspension. Razor sharp steering I've never come across before. Paddle shifters good, only use it to do a race start. Crappy navi, good stereo with Harman option. Very good cornering, brakes a bit stiff to push but work well.

Overall, I really enjoy my car. Its fast, its not too loud or too quiet. On just about any average freeway drive @ 75 mph i get about 30mpg with some passing of cars. If you drive 65mph you'll get 33-35mpg and if you cruise @ 55-60mph you will get almost 40mpg. Amazing all around car & when compared to the competition, there is no competition.

WRX long term - a drivers car

Over the last 22,000 miles the 'Rex' continues to shine with strong performance, excellent response to even moderate tuning, good MPG and reliability. The WRX really shines when given a COBB Stage 1 tune. Power delivery is smoother and more robust at the same time. In Stock tune the car has a light switch throttle, fast, but not smooth. Road holding is amazing - and to stress the traction limits of the car - one should be at a track. Excellent in wet and light snow conditions (only has about 5" of clearance). Car has proven a good people mover, able to take 4 adults and luggage. Ride can be rough, especially loaded with people. MPG remains higher than EPA estimates. Reliability is good, paint job is not as good as peers. Coverage is good, but paint quality to soft and chips easily. It does have rally car roots and can be taken down a gravel road (with proper training) at speeds faster then any car in its class- and most others well above it in price. Infotainment on the 2015 is mediocre compared to many - but bought the car for its simplicity and performance. Overall, still very pleased with the Rex. If you want a fast all weather, people moving, safe machine (with great resale value) - and don't want allot of electronic whiz-bang the WRX is hard to beat.

2500 mile review of my WRX

After checking numerous car reviews and seeing the praise this vehicle was getting from many automotive journalists I was convinced this was the car I wanted. Not many people would buy a car without the initial test drive. It's almost like getting married without kissing the women you have decided to wed . However during the month of March I put a deposit down for the 2015 WRX Premium model, no leather seats was an option I could live without . The owners manual has you keeping the revs under 4000 RPM for the first 1000 miles and let me be the first to say it was treacherous. Must say the car looks better in person and grows on you. Overall I am very pleased with the car.

This is my first turbo charged car and I always debated myself getting used EVO X vs new 2015 WRX. I think I made a right choice not choosing abused EVO X. My previous car was 2008 Toyota Camry with 160k miles and I decided to sell the car before it causes big problems. I read everything about 15WRX before I purchased it, so I was expecting stiff ride; first I was little annoyed but I got used to it. Twin scroll turbo was amazing and I didn't have any issues of turbo delay(it has around 5sec lag around 2500rpm). SAWD suspensions performed superior to anyother AWD cars I have driven. It cornered very sharply without hearing tire skid. Overall, I made a right choice of getting 2015 WRX.

I never write reviews, but i loved this car as much as i could and wanted to share my opinion. The car was my dream car since i saw my first wrx sti concept car back in 2003 and the 2015 surly looked as close to that as i could get so in mid 2014 i go into my subaru dealership and they have the new 2015 wrx sti so i left with it that day. I loved this car and never tried finding things wrong with it as i wanted to keep it for life. The car new drives you and can make a inexperienced driver feel like there a pro driver with ease, and ive never driven anything that felt so maneuverable. The car was solid until 3,000 miles i drove over some Massachusetts pot holes and bent the 2 rear wheels and subaru wouldn't help me with replacing my new $1,000 wheels so i had to fend for myself. Now my next repair was the brake pads and rotors at 10,000 miles which was under warranty and again same repair at 35,000 miles. Next was at 40,000 miles when my 3rd rod blew in the motor while driving hard on the highway, subaru covered it no problem since it was always serviced and 2 years later i get a class action lawsuit against subaru for a bad motor in my car. 50,000 miles need brakes and rotors again. At 60,000 miles my car check engine light comes on, pay dealership $300 for a special double oil change and presto never seen that light on again. At 65,000 miles i notice a power steering leak - find out its a damaged steering rack just out of warranty$1,000 no problem. 75,000 miles i have bad upper ball joints, steering rack feel is looser than stock and dealership says its suppose to be that way, brake pads and rotors need replacing, both front calipars are seizing and need to be replaced at $750 each. I loved this car but she didn't love me back, i have friends that drive harder than me and over 100,000 miles and never had any issue i experienced. I would tell anyone to buy a 2015 or newer wrx sti just be ready to be nickel and dimed by subaru(subaru warranty equals waste of your time but will complete in less than 2 months), but like any car one lemon doesn't mean there all the same, we cant always be a winner. Honestly i sold my 2015 wrx sti because i did not feel safe in it anymore and didn't want to keep wasting money. I am not a subaru fanboy but my 2008 legacy and 2015 wrx sti will most likely be the last money pits i buy. My hondas have lasted 200-300,000 miles with very little maintenance, and both subaru's seem to just break. Ive also owned a 99 impreza, 2004 wrx sti, 2012 impreza but the loves not there anymore.

This is a fast, excellent handling little car that is inexpensive and practical. It's a little rough around the edges but I love driving this car! Sometimes I have trouble taking off smoothly but after a second of turbo lag it really moves! Handling is precise and grip is amazing. The ride is very firm but well controlled. The clutch emits a pukey smell when slipped and the A/C is marginal. There is quite a bit of road and wind noise inside. I can't seem to get the base stereo to sound good; Kicker speaker upgrade is on the way.

This car is great, I have waited for years to own a Subaru WRX and now that I finally own one I couldn't be happier. It is absolutely the most fun I have had driving a car in many, many years. Just enough playful HP and torque to make the car an exhilarating fun drive. I have not had any issues with my car other than the occasional interior noise in a panel or two, easily fixed BTW by just searching the net. Oil changes are expensive, but hey I figured that using synthetic. The only thing I would change and glad they did in 16 would be the wheel size. Definitely going to an 18 - 8.5 or 9 when the time permits. I would highly recommend this car. Don't understand the negative reviews unless it was a lemon from the factory or just did not live up to the owners expectation. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

For the money you can't beat it! It's very quick, handles extremely good, and is pretty efficient. The things that need to be improved are audio, navigation, and infotainment system even when purchased with Harmond Kardon system. The interior also needs some attention paid to getting rid of some annoying rattles especially from the arm rest. Once again though I can't stress enough you can't beat it for the money. Note that this vehicle is equipped with a set of summer tires. If you live in a cold climate you will 100% need to either switch to all seasons or buy a set of winter tires. I went with a set of winter tires and its safe to say it's unstoppable now!—— Well this is a update on my review. Got rid of the car at 38000 miles due to excessive oil consumption. It would burn 1.2 quarts of oil every 1000 miles. Subaru was trying to tell me it was normal which I think is bogus. Traded it in for a 2017 STI that now has 25,000 miles on it. So far so good with the STI and yes it’s worth the premium price.

I’ll keep this short and sweet, oil is done every 3K and all recommenced maintenance has been performed, NO MODS, unless tint adds horsepower. I bought this vehicle as a CPO with 22K from Grand Prix Subaru in NY. Two days later the Bluetooth stopped working and GrandPrix wanted me to drive all the way back to potentially replace the radio. In June 2019 @ 52K it spun a rod bearing while on the highway, needless to say that engine/turbo was trashed. It took, 2 months for the repairs to be completed. Now at 60K, it spun another rod bearing and I am sitting here wondering why I thought buying a Subaru would be a good investment, or maybe it’s just dumb luck.

[Updated at 2 years ownership] I love most everything about the car. From the factory the only sore point in the Base model specs is the stereo. I lasted 3 months before the poor head unit and plastic speakers drove me to replacement. This car is a mod'rs dream. I've installed a Kartboy short shift plate, Group-N Pitch Stop mount, Group-N transmission rear support, White Line transmission bushings, Hella horns and Crawford AOS. Everything else is OEM until I get past the 3/36K mark. This is a great car for the money. Yes, road noise is above avg (more so with these mods), but it is a sports car. Yes, there are a TON of interior rattles/buzz, but "Its what makes a Subaru a Subaru". Buy felt tape and use it. The handling is "wow". Power is very good when the turbo comes alive a little above 2000 RPM. 6 Speed manual is good. If you have a spouse that is always asking "What's the third pedal for?", the CVT equipped cars are great performers. Only a few issues. First, I've had are a whistling clutch throwout bearing when it is humid for the first 23 months. Not an unheard of issue with the WRX. The throwout bearing seems to have mostly cured itself one day after producing a smell and sound that usually accompanies a burned out clutch and $1000 repair bill. The dealer says the clutch still works fine, but won't address the issue further unless it gives out. Second, the car has a much more pronounce gas and oil smell than other modern cars. Reminds me of old school hot rods. The fuel smell isn't nearly as strong as it used to be. Dealer said that if it starts leaking fuel on the ground or catches fire, bring it back in and they'll try to find the source. I carry around a 10 lb fire extinguisher. Lastly, the interior buzzing and rattling are getting the better of my attempts at silencing them. I had a mildly modified Acura TSX prior to the WRX. The WRX is clearly a more fun car. [ 01/2020] Sold the car at 2 years and 10 months. There was nothing particularly wrong with the car. I guess I got tired of the stop and go traffic on my commute and while the car isn't terrible in that type of traffic, it takes precise gas pedal inputs to modulate speed w/o getting jumpy in lower gears. Plus I wanted a car my wife could drive. Bless her heart, but she simply isn't a manual transmission person. Still lover her and I still miss the WRX. Sometimes I reeeeaaaallllyyy miss the WRX. Especially on twisty roads or driving at high speeds. Nothing like going 70 MPH, nailing the throttle and rocketing to over 100 with more potential still available. Looked into a CVT version of the car, but it suffers from incessant buzzing and higher RPM when you ask it to perform.

I have had this car since February of 2015. Fantastic daily driver, fun to drive aggressively. Gets great mileage for a performance car. I love getting into this car and driving it every day. I have had some issues with the car. The initial clutch was faulty and went out at 18K miles (I am 50 years old, don't race the car, and have had manuals all my life that routinely go 80-100K before needing a clutch). The new clutch had a totally different feel, lighter, and didn't fight with the hill holder like the first one. Also, the battery died at 29K miles. Both items replaced under warrantee. I have been changing my own oil, so only take it to the dealership for major service intervals. One thing that's great about this car is the boy racers always upgrade the wheels and rubber, so I was able to get a whole set of OEM rubber with factory rims with only 6K miles on them off Craigslist for 500 bucks, as well as a set of all seasons for the winter. Will drive this one into the ground!

Great all purpose car that is a blast to drive

First I am a long term subaru owner. I have had a Forester, Outback, and 2 Legacy's in our family. First the items that i dont like which are few. The car will ride a bit rough. You can rectify this by switching out the tires. I have put Continental DWS's on and wow, it really is smooth. The car is a bit noisy. its a performance sedan. It's not going to ride like a 50, 000 dollar luxury sedan. On a road trip its perfectly fine. The stock radio/speakers are not so hot. its an very easy fix. buy a good aftermarket radio and speakers. The car is a blast to drive. i have the CVT. you can drive this car as an everyday commuter and get over 30 miles on the highway and average overall 27 miles to the gallon. if you shift in the sport modes this thing will knock you back in the seat with its power. you will not find anything on the market that will deliver all this for the price. The handling is superb. If you take this car on a road trip you can cruse at 75-85mph and not realize how fast you are going. This car delivers the goods. I now currently have 87,500 miles on the car. i just replaced my tires and bought another set of continental DWS again. Its a great car and fun to drive. I plan on keeping this car at least through this current set of tires. if I trade the car I would probably look at the new Subaru legacy turbo. i have not added any aftermarket parts to the car. i think Turbos are great for adding power when you need it. Running any 4 cylinder engine up over 5 or 6000 RPMs for extended periods of time is not a prescription for long engine life. Running this boxer engine at 2500-3000 RPMs on an extended trip is fine. The engine can handle that just fine. So in miles per hour this equates to somewhere in the 80 to 85 mph. If you want to take this car to the track and run the heck out of it, the car will perform but good luck with long term engine life. Its fairly hard anyway to run over 80mph on US highways. So have fun with the car and the turbo. If you want to take it to the track an run the heck out of it, you might want to consider the STI. Its probably better suited for that. The car in my book is 5 star car. It is my daily driver but when i am on the highway i run the car in the sport mode. It gives me ample power to pass and still at 70mph i get about 33MPG on the highway. Any faster and your gas mileage will go down.

2015 year model would be very risky. 2015 wrx 50K miles. Here are the issue i had since 2014 July: Battery premature fail AC compressor fail (magnet coil failed replaced the pulley myself) Front strut mount fail (clunking sound when turning) Brake pedal squeaks Clutch pivot ball makes squeak sound Oil pump replaced Clutch pressure plate & throwout bearing fail Alternator & belt tensioner replaced. And now engine whining (went to dealership 4 times to fix it but never got it around to resolve this and my PT warranty expired now) my driver seat squeaks, plastic trims rattles, leather on steering wheel peeled off. Washer fluid sensor failing at 59k miles. So much for “confidence in motion”. This was my first subaru.

Traded after 2 months 2015 WRX

Extremely disappointed with what i thought would have been a great car based on reviews. Unfortunately the car had issues with clutch after 1200 miles, and service response was they would fix it once and after that I'm on my own, even though extended warranty was purchased. Subaru apparently does not stand behind it's product as this seems to be recurring issue across multiple forums. Went through a car wash and the air from the blower to dry the car ripped off the wiper arm as it was flapping like crazy, again subaru did not stand behind it. Enough was enough....

If you must have a 4 door, very good performance, only have $35K to spend, do not want poor long term reliability / expensive maintenance of European cars, and size bloat of other cars, this is a great choice. Not the fastest car but acceleration is very good. Beware turbo lag! Do not expect to mod the engine unless you want to void the warranty, bummer. Steering is good, handling is great (within reason, not M3 level), ride is very jarring. Shifter is decent feeling, but fast 2nd to 3rd gear shifts can get screwed up as shifter seem to find the same spot exactly between 1st and 3rd, preventing shifter going into 3rd. 4 wheel drive is there. Can cause some torque steer, but you can really feel the 4 wheels pull you through the turns ( if you are aggressive) . Interior is looks OK, but remember this is only a $35K car with most of the cost going to the turbo boxer engine, 4 wheel drive, and suspension. Front seats very supporting, rear is like any other econo-box. Base stereo is poor. Instrument have many different screens, which seems cool at first, but then you realize most of the screens show nothing of interest, except boost gauge. Car given 4 stars as there are faster sedan, but more expensive too. This does not mean this is not a very fun car to drive and own.

Okay let start off with I had a 2004 WRX. I love it and I would of still kept it if I didn't total it. Unfortunately [non-permissible content removed]. Went to purchase a 2015 Wrx I saw a lot of reviews and felt I made my research. Unfortunately I didn't do it correctly I'm guess. At 300miles the check engine with the cruise control came on flashing, and while at a stop light (being in nutral) the case get it was going to stall. Took it in "they got it fix". Around 2,000 miles or so it did the same thing not only the check engine and cruise control came back on and the ABS and the hill assists and the rough idling kept on happening. Took it in they kept it for an entire month. Got it back and when turning on the car there's a very loud gear grinding sound coming for the engine bay (while in nutral). Took it in for the 3rd time they said its normal and all the new WRX make the same noise. WRONG!!!! It doesn't. I honestly wouldn't recommend this model to anyone. Buy a 2014 your better off. I've never thought subaru wouldn't stand behind their product. This car is garbage get something else a GTI your better off or a lancer

Traded in a Mustang GT for a WRX with CVT. What a mistake. The cars electronics (radio/Bluetooth/seat heaters) are out of the early 90's. The radio has poor reception and sound quality was awful. The Bluetooth would randomly disconnect, whether using my iPhone or Android phone. The car developed a bunch of rattles. The ride was harsh and the road noise was unbearable. The front paint was flaking off. Most of the issues were well documented in service bulletins but no fixes identified. The AWD was not that good in snow. The back end would over drive and cause the back end to slide out. Traded in on another Mustang. What a mistake.

I am the original owner of a 2015 WRX. I have run synthetic oil and high octane gas in it since day one. This past Monday night, headed out on a business trip, the engine had a total failure. I lost all power and barely made it to the side of the road. The car has 100,00 miles on it and has been maintained. Under the wrong circumstances, this could have been more than engine failure, but lives could have been lost. I have owned the car for 4 years with 1 year left of financing. The repair estimate is $11,000. There is something wrong with this model and I would be very careful letting a loved one behind the wheel.

I have had my 2015 Subaru Premium manual version for over 62K miles since purchasing it new in October 2014. The cars handling and engine performance is outstanding, well above its price range. The direct injected twin scroll 2.0 liter turbocharged engine is a real winner. In both areas it well exceeds 30K sporty car expectations. Subaru's excellent all wheel drive system gives the driver an excellent four season vehicle. As of late 2015, Consumer reports likes the Subaru all wheel drive best of all tested wheel drive system in the snow. Subaru puts most of its money into the cars outstanding engine and drive train which I agree with. Cars interior is improved significantly over past edition. Audio quality with with mid level audio option is much improved. It is no longer a very sporty car with an econobox interior and fits with the cars price class overall. Exterior and interior paint can use additional improvement but Subaru customer service has provided outstanding help and remuneration on these problems. Subaru paid for a strut and air conditioner even though the car was out of warranty for those parts. In the case of the strut just over 36K. In the case of the air conditioner, last year when I reported the problem with my knowledge of manufacturer advisory to its dealers repair departments of higher than normal problems in that area leading to new air conditioner now being used in later WRXs.. If you any problems with the car that are not significantly your fault, my experience is that Subaru customer service will be fair and do its best to correct the problem and make you whole. No major personal expenses on the car yet. Gas mileage is somewhat below average for a sporty compact car with low 20s mph in mixed driving. However, car can be driven with pure premium or a mixture of premium and regular with an octane of at least 91 with no noticeable fall off in performance to me. I always use a top tier brand of gas so lots engine cleaners in the gas. In October, it will be six years of ownership and I have been very happy with it and Subaru's backing of its product.

Bought this car, base WRX, in April 2015 when my 2008 Kia Spectra was totaled in a fender bender at 5 mph. The Spectra was only totaled because of the crumple hood safety feature. After the accident, the Spectra was drive able, but had high mileage. I slid under the bumper of the higher sitting SUV at an on ramp when everyone stopped quickly. (My Spectra had an issue with the engine racing for no reason and I'd have to push in the clutch to keep from running into other cars, and then turn the car off). I wanted a WRX for years, but was out of my price range. Boss gave me a raise to get a new car, and insurance gave me $4k for the Kia. I went out and bought the WRX! I did a test drive and got scared at first from the turbo boost and lag. (remember the Kia engine racing....?) I was using the Edmunds buyer's service to find good deals, and get the up front price promise. After the test drive of the first WRX, I found a second through Edmunds with a free upgrade to the STI exhaust. I called the first dealer, where I test drove, and asked if they could get the second WRX on their lot and I would do the deal? The answer was yes, and I bought the second WRX for about $26,500. I put $6k down and financed for 60 months. I drive over 20k per year and this is the second silver/light color car I've owned (first was the Spectra). Wow I don't know if it's the light color, but with both cars, other cars keep running into the back of me! (like how I lost the Kia, but I hit a black SUV). WRX is a great car, sturdy and dependable. Issues: the battery died at 2 years at about 36k miles, I replaced. Of course it comes with summer ties....why wouldn't it? I replaced the OEM summer tires (with Continental DWS) at about 10k in Dec 2015 before a big 2' snow in Balt, and then after digging out I drove through the snowy streets to BWI airport to fly to Vienna, Austria. In Vienna, I showed them my WRX and the 2' of snow...Vienna had no snow. In the summer of 2017, we drove to N. Carolina to watch the total solar eclipse, and on the way home we had over 15 hrs of bumper to bumper traffic. After hours of traffic, (I was using my cruise control to save my clutch leg by increasing and decreasing the cruise setting with the little switch) my check engine light came on and the cruise control symbol lit up! I freaked and pulled into a gas station to check the engine but found no problems. I just had to drive without the cruise control the rest of the way home. After being turned off and sitting overnight, the check engine light went off, and the cruise control worked again Yea! Over the next 2 years if I over used it in traffic or slick roads, the check engine would light up with the cruise control symbol and I would lose cruise control. Recently the lights have stayed off and I use cruise control, but turn off in heavy traffic. I did my first oil change at 9k miles with the recommended Subaru specified oil and filter from the dealer (cost about $60). Second oil change was not until 30k because after the first oil change at 9k my gas mileage dropped from 30 mpg to about 26 mpg. Once the oil gained mileage and age, the gas mileage went back up to 30+ mpg. My friend speculated that as the oil loses viscosity the gas mileage increases? Maybe with synthetic, but I always thought the reason to have an oil pressure gauge was to watch for the oil pressure decrease as the oil breaks down? Maybe the gauges were just to watch for leaks? I drive north to the Poconoes almost every weekend, and during the week I commute from Baltimore to DC, horrible commute and traffic. Since my 30k oil change, I have not changed the oil, and I can get up to 40 mpg as measured by the automated system, (it reads 10% high) on highway, which equals 36 mpg measured by dividing miles by gallons of gas (manual system?). Driving the streets of Balt I get about 24 mpg. To maintain the higher gas mileage, I change the oil filter (extremely easy on this car!! Maybe the best feature of all?) about every 10k and top off with new Subaru synthetic or Castrol syntec. I want to do a full oil change again before 100,000 miles coming up soon. Ok the clutch is still original. About 18 months ago we went to a Ravens football game, and had to park in someone's yard. I thought I could hop over the curb, but my rear tires where both up against the curb. I gave too much gas and we smelled the clutch burning (as people have mentioned in earlier reviews). I thought the clutch was toast but its ok (went through 6 clutches in an '84 Horizon over 12 yrs). My first Continental DWS's lasted about 72,000 miles! before I blew one out at 80 mph when I quickly had to steer off an exit ramp on 81 north-south of Scranton, PA. The DWS's worked great, and I was smelling burning rubber going up a hill and I thought it was trucks but was me. Stopped, put donut on and drove 200 miles home. Popped on OEM summer tire until I bought a new set of DWS. At 72k tires still read DW! DryWetSnow. Never been in shop. Update: March 20222. A little over 130,000 miles now. Everything is good. Not commuting since covid. Drive in city mileage 24.5 mpg. Highway mpg over 35.

I loved the car stock but went to Stage 1 with Cobb intake and AccessPort it really woke up the car. It handles like a dream. I take corners like a mad man all the time. The basic sound system is not great and an absence of auto blinkers(where it blinks 3 times automatically) and 17 inch tires aren't great, but I still love this car. I owned a 2002 Mustang GT with alot of bolt ons and I'd pick this WRX in a heart beat. MPG's are great if you have a little self control, and the wife loves it which is a miracle. It's great for families with lots of safety and room. This car isn't perfect, but I love it. I hope to keep it for many years to come. 32K miles - No problems. Pushing 350whp and 360wtq for over 10k miles and it's running perfectly. Blew out my rear differential because I did a launch with my family in the car... bad idea. 2010 Forester XT rear diff is the same - R180. I love this car. Still. 3 years later.
