Used 2022 Subaru Outback Touring XT 4dr SUV AWD (2.4L 4cyl Turbo CVT) Consumer Reviews
Some positive, lots of negatives
PRO: smooth ride, very comfortable seats, good handling, nice interior. CON: loud, coarse, rough engine (mine has the 2.4 turbo), jerky cvt transmission (the worst I've ever driven), awful electronics. The voice-activated navigation might as well not exist - cannot recognize virtually any address. Display screen excruciatingly slow to react, fan speed button almost doesn't work. Sad to say, I regret the purchase. UPDATE: after a few months, nothing has gotten better and some new things have popped up. Everything electronic on this car is a mess - the hands-free liftgate works about 30% of the time; the driver-recognition unrecognizes drivers within a few days; warnings turn themselves back on after being disabled. UPDATE 2: I see that the 2023 model has a better touchscreen interface - larger fan speed buttons, seat heater buttons on the front where they should be. I got in touch with Subaru to ask if mine could be updated to the new screen - it's all software, after all. The answer is "no." I asked "why?" No reply. Regarding the "transmission:" I asked the dealer if there is an update, since the engine is constantly fighting the CVT, which always wants to be in the highest gear. Yes, there's an update. No, it didn't make any difference. Truly, the mucky electronics/interface and the misdesigned CVT make this an unpleasant car.

Impressed
I wanted a car to handle the Ohio winters. Though my BMW SUV was nice it let me down last winter. Friends that own a Subaru have all said its AWD Symmetrical system was superior to other manufacturers. I was concerned I would not like the CVT but the turbo engine (I bought) simulates the shifting similar to the automatics I enjoy.

Great for the outdoors and family
I've had this car for 2 months now and I've been a Jeep owner for many years. The car feels secure, quiet and responsive. We've taken the car on 2 long trips already and love how much room we have. I drive through rough roads on a daily basis and the clearance makes it super easy. Jeeps do keep their value I would say. But after 40k miles, I started getting problems with my jeep. Anyways, before I considered the Subaru, I talked with several people who own them, and many of them had over 200k miles without any issues. I'm excited to drive this for the next 10 years.

Subaru Outback piece of crap!
Both my mother and I bought new Subaru Outbacks in the last couple of years. Mine was a 2021. I’d never owned a Subaru but they are everywhere in Utah so I presumed they were good and reliable. Boy was I wrong! I went through 3 windshields in 2 yrs because even if a speck of dust hits the windshield the whole thing cracks. When it cracked just 2 wks after having it replaced I gave up and just decided to live with it cracked bc it takes half a day to get it replaced with the Eyesight recalibration. I have subsequently found out about class action law suits regarding the ridiculously weak windshields. The battery died and required replacement on both my and my mom’s car when only about 2 years old-the over-engineered tech is too much for the factory batteries. The touchscreen interface is ridiculous. Doesn’t respond fast enough. has things hidden in sub-menus (like seat warmers) that should just be push buttons. Sometimes it just decides to not work randomly and the screen will be black for a whole drive (no music, nothing). The heating/cooling system is a mess—it will blow hot air on you for 20 minutes when it’s 95 degrees outside and you have the AC on and it’s set to cool. Not just taking time to cool, but literally thinks it’s cold outside and has the heat blowing on you until it finally figures it out (by which time you’ve already reached your destination). It will not remember what your climate settings were at from when you last drove the car. And it’s like driving in a nanny state. Beeping at you for everything. Beeps incessantly (loud and unpleasant) when you’ve turned your car off and you’re just trying to gather your things to get out. Not all the annoying beeping can be disabled. Never had such an annoying car. Beeps at you to pay attention to the road when you have to interact with the stupid screen. Subaru has taken what was their flagship car and ruined it with the tech and made it unreliable. Stay away. I traded mine in for a Certified Used CRV, which I love. My mom is waiting for her new CRV to come in so she can ditch her Outback
Biggest piece of junk I've ever owned
The car had 3-miles on it when I purchased it and I had nothing but problems since day one. There are too many problems to list! I bought a Outlook Touring for all the bells and whistles which is where the main problems lie. The electronics are iffy and work sometimes but not always. The infotainment system randomly shuts off. The collision avoidance system doesn't work consistently. If a car pulls in front of me or I change lanes, the function that should keep me a safe distance behind that car, doesn’t “see” the car. The blind spot monitors work sporadically. The windshield cracked when there was less than 100-miles on the car! The A/C blows cool but then blows warm. IF/when I want to use the lane assist, the car constantly attempts to either drive me into on coming traffic or off the road. The car always warns me to keep my eyes on the road or to keep my hands on the steering wheel. My hands are on the steering wheel and I am watching the road! The navigation system doesn’t function properly. When I say “go to” it says “calling.” Or when I tell it where I want to go it tries to direct me to a different part of the country. Sirius worked for about 5-minutes. The dealership tells me it's Sirius problem; Sirius says it's a dealer issue. Needless to say, I've never really been able to use this. The trunk doesn’t open with a hand swipe or consistently when pushing the button in the back. The car jerks like something is wrong with the transmission. The battery runs down and I can't start the car. There are so many problems with this car. With all the above-listed problems, especially with the safety functions not working properly, I don’t trust the car. This was a brand-new car. Everything should work but doesn't. I've had the car at Subaru so many times it's ridiculous and when I drive home, the problems still persist.
