Do your homework; both Consumer's Reports annual car review edition and Car and Driver research was helpful. Also, test drive the competition's products as well; for us, the Subaru Forester beat all the others when it came to visibility, ease of getting in and out, value, amenities and dealership relations... Initially thought the CVT transmission might take some getting used to, but, in fact, its so seamless neither my wife or I give it a second thought. My only pick is that I wish the fuel cap was on the left (driver's side) instead of the right. Okay, now, after having owned the car for a little over a year, we still think we made the right choice; other then routine oil changes, we have had no issues with the vehicle or the servicing dealership (Hodges Subaru). In our opinion, the Forester is still a strong recommendation. We now have about 22,000 miles on the Subi and we are still very happy; the vehicle is still tight and, for its size, the handling is excellent. However, a small pick... the air bag indicator light on the upper console stays on all the time to show (I guess) that it is functioning; it's distracting and unnecessary (especially at night)...

I just traded in a 2012 Subaru Forester for a 2016. I always said that the Forester was a perfect car and I never wanted to have another car. I may have to amend my review after driving the 2016. It drives great, but the driver's seat is really uncomfortable. The seatbelt buckle comes up really high and is made of very hard metal and plastic. It jabs you in the hip the whole time you are driving. Road trips are specially uncomfortable. I have tried stuffing wash cloths in between the seat and the seatbelt to push it away and wrapping a washcloth around the buckle with rubber bands to soften it, but nothing works very well. The ride is great, but what's the point if the seat is so uncomfortable? The other complaint I have is about the satellite radio. The display was terrible on the 2012 and the 2016 is much improved, but it could be a lot better. I don't know why Subaru is so resistant to developing a decent satellite radio for their cars. And If you listen to Howard Stern, every time you turn on the car it jumps back to the "preview" channel with commercials and all, which is extremely annoying. Subaru told me they do that for parental controls, presumably so that a child won't hear a swear word. I don't have a child and if I wanted parental controls I can get them through Sirius, I don't need Subaru to devise its own annoying solution. Obviously, if I listen to Howard Stern, which is a special subscription, I don't find him to be morally objectionable. I resent Subaru's interference here. The drive of the Forester is still great, but I don't know if I will continue to get them after my experience with the 2016. These are two thing that bother me every single time I get into the car. I've been driving if for a year and am considering getting rid of it soon and looking at Honda.

If you enjoy a vehicle that rides like a buckboard, seats that extremely uncomfortable, has poor instrumentation, a unbelievably subpar stereo system then this is the vehicle for you. I could kick myself a hundred times for not buying a Ford Edge. When I wrote the above lines we had 17,000 miles on the vehicle. Now we have 25,000 on it. My opinion of the vehicle hasn't changed. We were almost in a very bad crash. The vehicle handled superbly and we avoided the crash, but would still not consider buying another one.

I had a 2004 Forester until recently and loved it. If the head gasket didn't go I'd still have it. The new 2016 is a real disappointment compared to it. There were so many nice features with the 2004. Whoever designed the interior should be fired. I never seen so many uncomfortable placements of controls and things (compared to the 2004) as in this car. For example, in the rear area - there are two corner sections with sloping bottoms and no wall to keep things in there. Why have the sections if you can't put something in there and have it stay put? The power windows and door locks are placed below the door pull handle and take special effort to go directly to. Door storage has just a long open slot for things to bounce around in. If you put a music CD in, withdraw it, you must push a button for the radio to come back into play - WTF??? The speedometer doesn't have markings between the tens of MPH (e.g., 10, 20, 30, etc. - no 15, 25, 35, etc.) many highways in the US are 45 or 55 mph. And wait until you feel the car in a slight wind. Lastly, you now need synthetic oil for your changes ($$$$$). As a result of my dissatisfaction with the 2016 Forester, I took a loss and traded it in for a different car.

Subaru has hit a home run with its Forester 2016. This is a very optimal vehicle, refined design, excellent safety rating. Really love the drive and handling. Visibility is the best I found in any vehicle. Very roomy interior. After using Hondas for more than 20 years this is the first Subaru we bought. So far very pleased with it. Drive mostly local with occasional highway driving. Very impressed with fuel economy, given this is an AWD.

If you are not into all the new technology that is in cars now you may not be as happy as you thought you would be in a new car. Personally, I enjoyed having things simple and reliable. Turn a knob or flip a switch and it always works the same way. Not so with wi-fi and bluetooth. This "new stuff" is not what I wanted, but since I wanted a Forester I had to settle for all their so-called improvements. I guess if keep this one for at least 12 years also I'll get use to these new-fangled features, eventually!

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

The Good = Vision, Vision, Vision. Acceleration. Crossing lane lines detection. Eye Site safety feature does work and works well. Did test drive 5 different vehicles (stayed away from mid-size and large SUVs). The Forester was by far the best for my needs. The Bad = With Eye Site, the front seat sun visors are too small; therefore, the sun doth shine in from the gap and sides. Need a aftermarket visor that will stop the rays. While not Bad, a buyer needs to be aware that this is NOT smooth riding vehicle; it is a rough rider. Must add that the cup holders are NOT of the best design. Water bottles will fall because the holder lacks sufficient depth. The Ugly = The Owner's Manual appears to have been written by a group of attorneys that DO NOT drive. Reminds me of computer manuals written by engineers who do not use the computer discussed by the manual. Also noticed a lack of 10, 11, and 12 year old's on lots to provide tech assistance to those of who are ancient - but that's probably in violation of child labor laws in most states.

Updated 4/18 Its been at least a year owning this car and the initial problem has not returned. The car is dependable and comfortable if you are driving. It is easy to handle. As a passenger the front and back seats are not very comfortable for long drives. The toyota rav4 is much more comfortable. My husband is quite happy to drive this car and would purchase another. I would stick with a toyota. I have to say I want to love this car but in less than 1 month of owning it we already had problems. The interior is comfortable and the drive is very nice. We bought this car for the safety ratings. It's our 1st time venturing away from Toyota. In week 1 the engine lights started going on when you turned the car on. Multiple lights were on showing different issues. My husband took the car back to the dealership and the sensors were replaced. We were told this was a known issue and the problem was fixed. Yesterday we received a letter from Subaru saying the CTV transmission was not filled with enough fluid. Guess we are going back to the dealership. This is a total disappointment! Be forewarned.

Great power. Good sound systems. Sleek look. Solid feel. Road hugging. Plenty of storage. Bright head headlights. Good looking wheels. Easy read and sophiscated cluster. I am going to sell my BMW and keep this Subaru Forester XT. But this is a well built vehicle. I drove Audi Allroad, BMW X1 and X3 and x4, Toyota Rav 4, Scion Xb, Honda CRV. This is by far, the most well balanced, value and well built vehicle. Don't blindly loyal to Honda and Toyota, imho they just make average vehicle. Anyway want to challenge me, please go to drive the cars yourself and compare, you will know what I am talking about. 2.5 NA is decent but 2.0XT is great. Please don't blindly buy Toyota and Honda, their car overrated. Period.

This car has very cheap interior, too many rattling noise, blower noise. Most of the issues are during cold weather. Passenger seat belt warning light come up even though the passenger seat is empty. When cold it takes 10 minutes for the engine to warm up and pick up acceleration, if driving in before 10 minutes, can't drive more than 30 to 35 mph at full throttle. Drive side windshield freezing from inside even though all windows, moon roof is completely closed and it takes long time to clear and melted water dripping into dashboard. Have several fixes done nearly visited 7 times dealership and again scheduled one. Highly recommended to thoroughly check the vehicle before purchasing. The dealership from where I purchased the vehicle always say why are you worried about the plastic and noise but the other dealer identified the root cause and fixed them but new issues coming up. This vehicle is just 7 months old and has only 7000 miles on it. Not at all recommended.

Ok, I am shopping for a new vehicle and my list is the 2016 models of the Ford Escape, Mazda CX5, and the Subaru Forester. I added the Forester recently because it looked great on paper. I've test driven it twice now with the second time with the family. I thought it felt great, but my wife hated the feel as a passenger. She felt nauseous because the vehicle swayed and bounced like a ship on turbulent waves. We own a Nissan Frontier and a Mitsubishi Outlander. She has no issues with either of those vehicles. So I put the Forester back down to #3 on my list and will have her test drive my #1 pick before I purchase. It does us no good if she's queasy as a passenger. Something to think about if you purchase this vehicle.

Solid car, not a sports car, but acceleration is ok. Took a 1100 mile trip, drove in hard rain and winds for 2/3 of the distance and handled both well. Traded in a 2011 Avalon, so had to adjust to stiffer ride and a little more noise. Still happy with the car, had a tire blow out at 75 on the right rear, hit some construction trash, but was able to pull off on shoulder with no problems. Only problem, in remote Texas late at night, road service is severely limited, had to drive on donut spare for about 150 miles at very slow speed. 01/08/17 I traded for a RX 350, I missed the better ride, noise and comfort.

Won't be purchasing another Subaru

Bought this car for my wife, mostly because it had sweet safety ratings and distracted driver assistance. Rides quiet and fine. Looks okay, but could be a little more stylish. Safety seems excellent. Love the Eyesight, which prevented me from rolling into a car which inexplicably stopped in front of me. The first disappointment was the mileage, which was significantly lower than the sticker estimate (24/32), and one reason I chose this vehicle over other options. Suburb/highway combined mileage netted just under 24, whereas highway never topped 26. Interior was the major disappointment here, and mostly on things you wouldn't know without using the SUV for a while. The fabric on the ceiling is pretty flimsy, easily soiled and hard to clean. But the worst is the super-thin plastic interior of the cargo area. We placed some suitcases back there for a trip to the beach, and it busted a hole in the plastic wall surrounding the compartment. On closer inspection, I could see how ridiculously-thin the material was. Guessing this was used either for weight/mileage, or cost, but it could be described as an interior crumple zone, because the next hard object that goes in there will likely bust another hole in it. Can't imagine someone using this vehicle to move any sort of equipment or even making a trip to the hardware store. Seriously cheap. If they haven't upgraded the cargo interior and ceiling fabric in later models, I'd look at other manufacturers, who now have similar driver's assistance systems available. Oh, and the manager never called my wife back when she wanted to talk about the interior damage, so won't be going back there (Herb Gordon, MD).

Have had my 2016 Forester for three weeks and about 800 miles. The CVT takes some getting used to , however, the gas mileage is impressive for all wheel drive, given this motor is not broken in yet and I'm getting 27.5 mpg in mixed driving. No rattles, issues or negative impressions. Considered this vehicle because my wife has the 2012 model and loves it and no issues with her vehicle either. The Subaru dealership was great to work with and I feel I got a very good deal. Time will tell but so far this Forester is proving this was the right choice !!! Have owned this Forester for six months now and here is my update. Still no issues with anything. Changed the oil at 2000 miles, my choice, and no excessive consumption. Given this is a new vehicle and the motor is just braking in I'm very happy with it. Highway mileage is around 33 mpg. if I keep the speed under 70 mph. Over 70 and the mpg. drops quickly. At this point I would buy this vehicle again. Have now owned this vehicle for 13 months and over 7000 miles. No oil consumption issues. In fact, no issues of any kind. Have driven in all weather conditions and the Subaru has been great. Am enjoying the Forester very much and would purchase again. Have now owned this vehicle over two years and a little over 16000 miles on the odometer. On trips over two hours the front seats are very uncomfortable to the point we have to pull over and get out for awhile. Subaru has changed something in the front seats as we have driven my wife's 2012 Forester for hours with no issues at all. Seats in the 2012 are very comfortable and I expected the same with the 2016 given they are both the Limited model. NOT SO !!! Comfort of front seats is an issue Subaru must address or we have purchased our last one.

I have wanted a Subaru Forester since they first came out. But every time we went looking for a new car, a different dealer was willing to give us a better price, or different make of car came with more bells and whistles or better fuel economy. But this time we got the Forester and are very pleased that we did. We have an excellent view or the road, we feel safe, the car corners and handles quite well -- albeit not like a roadster -- the trim level has the features we wanted but not features we didn't want, and at least so far, fuel economy is better than advertised. Be warned, however, that you will find what you are looking for in the owner's manual only by accident.

Overall I love my Forester

This was the first car I've ever purchased new (and the second vehicle I've owned, so take this review with a grain of salt). We bought this because the safety ratings are good and we wanted something to feel safe in with our infant son during the Minnesota winters. Overall, it handles well and has some "oomf" to the acceleration when needed (merging on highways). I love the backup camera and the overall layout of the dashboard features. My biggest complaints are 1) it could handle better in the winter (debating buying snow tires) and 2) the cabin materials don't seem especially sturdy. Within a month of having the vehicle, my wedding band had worn off the metallic silver on the interior door handle. I am not particularly rough with this car--this was simply from opening and the door and getting in/out. The car seat material seems to snag easily. My friend has an earlier version of the Forester (2011 I believe) and hers seems to do better on the snow (despite her tires being older than mine as well). That said, when our lease is up we do intend to lease another Subaru (likely the newest version of the Forester). It's easily one of the best purchases we've made and I like working with the company. Perhaps a potential concern, however, is there doesn't seem to be much room for the front seats when car seats are installed in the back--maybe something to keep in mind if you are currently using two car seats. We do travel often (most of our family is 3+ hours away) and it is a comfortable vehicle to be in, though there is a little bit of noise (also if you turn the air up to the highest settings, you can barely hear over it, though I'd imagine this is likely the case for virtually any vehicle). Hopefully in the future there will be separate climate controls for the back (as it takes some time for it to heat/cool, which can be frustrating when toting around children).

Great interior space for stuff. Needs oil after a 1,000+ miles. Less than 50,000 mi on vehicle and I am on my third right rear tire. Subaru now requests an alignment after 10,000 mi. My dealer has been fine - not Subaru of America. Before buying check concerns online and CEO apology from Japan.

Oil consumptio

I bought a 2016 Forester new and had to order it because I wanted a stick shift. I drove a couple of 300 mile trips and flash the oil light came on in the middle of the trip. I put in two qts and when I got back home did an oil consumption test. It turned out ok so I just chalked it up to not coming from the dealer with a full round of oil. Next 600 mile trip the light came on again..about a qt and a half but I was in the middle of San Francisco so not nice. Started another oil consumption test. I live 120 miles from a dealer so tried to time it for the 1200 mile interval but was short 95-100 miles and they wouldn't do it. Next trip I got smart and decided to check the oil before we left our motel on the way home...another quart. It's not leaking anywhere it just uses it. I wrote Subaru of America but nobody responded. Also, it's only 3 years old and the drivers seat upholstery is starting to fray and fall about. I think this car is a piece of crap and only bought it because other people have told me how great a suby was. I will be trading it off-at a huge loss because somebody was nice enough to give me a door ding and the paint on the front has a million little rock chips in it. I only do highway driving.

No regrets but falling out of love

I bought this car new with 15 miles in Feb 2016. Let me first say what I don't like... The turbo requires premium fuel. The dealer said it didn't, but manual says it does, so it does. Premium is now 60 cents, or roughly 25%, more exp than regular, and the turbo model gets worse gas milage than naturally aspirated 2016 models and especially worse than newer modern compact crossovers. The AC sucks! Maybe that's due to the larger interior and the darker colors but my 2007 Sentra has a much more powerful ac (newer coolants or efficiencies might also be to blame, regardless, the AC sucks). The ride is kind of rough. The seats are hard as a rock - this is actually the worse feature. They are hard and the seat is too short. I'm a small guy, 5'6", and I'd like the seat to be 2" longer. The brakes and steering aren't bad but the steering has almost no feedback and it will slip and pull both wheel and vehicle into the last fifth when you execute a max turn and it feels super awkward. Don't do this if you can avoid. Tiny crap light in the storage compartment. The stock speakers were [nonpermissible content removed] they were an embaresent, come on Subaru, spend $10 on speakers already. Ok so what do I like. The turbo was worth it. Whoop this baby is fast, esp in the sport smart mode. It actually gets 32-35 mpg in town (of course I live in the Midwest - it wouldn't get this in LA or anything), better than the EPA estimate. While the ride is rough, I prefer that to a plush ride w/ sway, and you can't have both, at least not at this price point. It can be awkward and make your head bob but ultimately I like the suspension, esp after I got new tires (general altimax replaced the Bridgestone it came w/ and the generals were much better). Normal driving is great regarding all aspects - steering is responsive but road feedback from bumps is minimal, the brakes are responsive without being too grabby, and the acceleration is also responsive but not overly sensitive. My favorite aspect is the visibility. The cabin is all windows. I thought in 2016 and still think today the Forester isn't the best looking car, but it's one of the best cars. It's so nice when you are in it, vs vehicles w tiny windows (Kia Sportage, hyundia Veloster). My huge rear mirror is still smaller than the viewing angles out the rear window. The oil changes could not be easier, with the filter on top and the ground clearance allows me to crawl under and remove drain plug without jacking it up. Storage is awesome, very large space for the class. The rims are beautiful and I've never seen rims I like more than the 2016's xt rims. Paint has held up well, and the layout of the cabin is very functional, although again I thought other cabins looked better. Mazda especially, but when I actually tried to adjust controls it was awkward. It's not awkward in the Forester. It just works, and that's what mattered/s to me.

Cam shaft gasket common issue

We keep seeing how reliable Subarus are. What you don’t see is the expensive common issues!!!! This isn’t just about my vehicle and I regularly maintained it. The camshaft housing gasket is a common problem. The repair shop I use has had 4 Subarus with this issue in the last month!!!! The whole engine has to be taken out and costs $4000-$6000. A Subaru dealer diagnosed it and told me to call Subaru to see if they would help. They just blew me off and told me they couldn’t confirm that my vehicle has been maintained. Since it has been maintained, it makes no difference as to whether you will end up with this issue!! Reliable….questionable???? It needs to be addressed my the manufacturer.

Let’s see. Purchased the Forester brand new in 2016. Here are all the issues and work thus far. CV axles replaced Rear struts replaced. Neutral safety switch failure. Car won’t start FrontLower control arm bushings replaced Premature battery failure (charging system investigation ongoing?) CVT extended warranty due to failure Power steering box extended warranty due to failure. I am sure I missed a few other items. Never buying a Subaru again. Just not made as well.

I love my car, I really do, but I am shopping for something else now. I bought the car as a new vehicle, and have had the front bearings and transmission replaced, electrical issues with the windows, transmission slipping, and two dead batteries that seem to be related to the headlights/electrical.

We have only had our forester for a month and we already have 1500 miles on it. We have driven Hondas and toyotas and feel you can't beat them but loved the features of the forester. So far we are very impressed with the quality of our new Subaru and with Byers Subaru dealership. The salesperson told us to bring our car in as much as we wanted for a car wash. I was pleasantly surprised when they even sprayed off the all weather mats and swept the interior!

Burns oil

This 2015 Subaru Forester was my first new vehicle in 12 years. I did my research and test drove a lot of other vehicles before choosing it. Everything was fine until the oil light came on before the first scheduled service. I checked the oil and it was a quart down. I put a quart of oil in and mentioned it when I took the car in for service. The maintenance person I spoke to was completely mystified as to what could be wrong. I have had the car a little over a year and a half and have had to put oil in it three times. The dealership has had me coming back every 1200 miles to do oil consumption test "to see what could be wrong". Three weeks ago I got a settlement notice of a class action suit against Subaru for excessive oil consumption in the 2014 and 2015 Foresters. So, all along the service people must have known what was happening and I can only assume that they were told to lie about it. I like the car, it's fun to drive, but I really resent being treated like an idiot by the dealership I will never buy another Subaru. In my opinion they are completely unreliable. Update as of June 2017: The dealership replaced the engine in my Forester in September of 2016 after I sent in a very negative survey to Subaru corporate. It came out that the design of the engine I had allowed synthetic oil to leak around the seals, thus explaining the low oil levels. Since replacing the engine is an expensive fix, that is why the dealership didn't want to admit there was a problem. Since the engine was replaced the car has been burning oil normally and I've gotten to a place where I think I can stand to keep the car. I will not, however, ever buy another Subaru. Trust lost often can never be earned back. Update as of 6/26/19: I have not had any further problems with my Subaru Forester, however I recently received a recall notice for the car. Something about the brake light switch being defective, which can affect the antilock brake system and the vehicle dynamic system (all wheel drive). I now have to take it in for service for this problem. I continue to regret buying this car. It was one of the worst decisions of my life.

I'm thrilled I choose the Subaru Forester! I love how it rides! The additional features (dimming mirrors, back camera, etc.) are great. I'm a bit concerned how low the low gear will work inclement weather, as it doesn't seem to slow the vehicle as much as I'd like. Navigating through the musical list selections can be a bit cumbersome as well. The rear seat area has a great deal of space and leg room, perfect for my growing kids. Plenty of cargo space as well, enough for a weekend's worth of soccer gear and a grocery run. Overall, I am very pleased with my new Forester. I also have received exceptional service from the dealership, both during the sale and after the purchase as well.

After Purchasing and owning several new GM and Toyota Vehicles, we decided to try a Subaru. This might date me, but these things were all the rage, back in the Late 70's and early 80's, and I was feeling nostalgic. We read all the reviews, drank the cool-aid and said, we want to feel that "love and loyalty" Subaru owners seem to have. We were wrong. After owning this car for 4 years and 70,000 miles later we will never buy another Subaru. There are plenty of better cars out there for the money. And Subaru "after the purchase" support is not great. We honestly had never driven a worst car on winter roads than this Forester, it seems to float. I have driven in Mich winters for 45 years and have never been in car that has handled this badly, or have ever heard the wind noise this thing makes. They told me it was the tires. I think there has been something seriously wrong with the 4 wheel drive system or ever since we bought it. They told me unfortunately other people have had the same problem. People ask me, how do you like your Subaru, I tell them the truth, I guess we just never felt the "Love" And still not feeling the love. We will never by another Subaru period!. Fooled me once.......but never again.

Nice buying experience. The XT turbo engine offers plenty of power to carry 5 in the car and go up long steep roads. Interior road noise and wagon like ride however are below my expectations compared to an Audi SUV I also own. The cvt shifts quietly and smoothly. Visibility is great in this car. The anti-collision aide and lane departure aide alarms are toooooo quiet even when adjusted to the loudest setting. Audi's alarm chimes loud like an elevator plus the dashboard blinks bright red which is what an alert should be like. The Forester's interior has a lot of cheap plastic buttons and panels, which surprised me because this XT is their most pricy model. At least let the consumer feel like he's getting his money's worth in the high trim model. The rear seat recline doesn't even have a handle or button, it is just a nylon pull strap! I think the lower trim XT model at $26k msrp would be your best choice, unfortunately Navi is not even an option on that trim level.

The rear view camera is nice but I wish they had included an object warning beep. There is a shortage of storage. The speedometer is hard to read, they should have made it digital like in other Subaru 2016 models. That being said, I love the vehicle, great mileage, responsive except on hills, looks great, and some nice features like dimming side mirrors.

I rented this car for a week and it was ok, but it has one major flaw. When I got the car from the rental place it was sunny and then I went driving in a wooded area that had shaded areas and I looked down at the speedometer and I could not tell what speed I was at because the speedometer and tach numbers are made with a muted washed out color, I had to take off my sun glasses and still had a hard time seeing the speedometer numbers. I turned on the lights to try and get some back lighting and it did not help much, and this was on a full sunny day. The speedometer and tach are positioned down into the dash board and the numbers are a weird muted washed out light color which are hard to read, and the small lcd screen between the speedometer and tach looks like something from 1970. I took pictures of this and plan to send them to subaru because it is a safety issue. Overal the car was good, but I could never buy one because I need to be able to see what speed I am at.

The Pro's - steering is excellent in the car, it can take sharp turns very well. Safety and visibility is also a big plus for the car. Acceleration is pretty good, but the sport shifting can sometimes lag. Head space is pretty good. The Con's - very small backup camera. The center console storage is too far back. The front passenger seat is way to high up, with no ability to lower it. Paint is very thin and scratches easily. MPG is less than satisfactory, and requires premium gas. Vehicle requires maintenance much quicker than other cars. Stock tires absolutely suck!

I have purchased 2 Subaru Forester XTs now. I love most everything about them, and hope to keep the newest 2016 for years. The biggest downfalls I have found are the lack of rear air, slow AC cooling, and not very family friendly with babies. Although the car is very safe, the lack of rear air is a huge problem. My 7 month old baby is unable to get cooled off quickly due to his large rear facing car seat blocking the middle vents from reaching him. His car seat has also taken up the majority of the back seat, which has made me consider buying a larger vehicle. His stroller takes up the majority of the trunk area. Although I would love to keep the car for years, it may not be possible.

This is my third Forester. I've had an '05, and an '09. I traded up to a '16 for the look but there are a few things about this car that I'd like you to know if you are considering purchase. The tires on it are not great compared with other Foresters. You might as well plan to replace the tires as soon as the first winter weather arrives. Both Winters I have had this vehicle the snow and ice have built up in the rims as well causing the car to vibrate violently at highway speeds. I was told the only thing I could do is take it to the car wash to spray the ice out. That usually doesn't get it all and I end up picking out ice chunks in the freezing cold. The dealership I purchased this car at did nothing with my complaints and requests for different tires. So I thought you should know. Also, this car gets great gas mileage and the stereo upgrade they made is good too.

2016 Subaru Forester a Disappointment

Vicki S., 04/29/2016

The new Subaru Forester is not an improvement over previous year models. I had this as a courtesy car for 3 days, so it went on my 45 mile each way work commute which takes me across small neighborhood roads as well as the majors and the turnpike, so all kinds of driving. I noticed right away that the interior has some line of sight problems. The side windows are junked up with fake little triangle windows near the front corners, so that the reflection of the interior is plainly visible in the window when you are trying to look at the side rear view mirrors. When trying to adjust the rear view mirror to see out the back and sides of the vehicle I accidently hit the on-star emergency button and was promptly given a call. These small 911 butons turned out to be right above where I put my hand to bring the RW mirror to my height, so rotating the mirror down brought my knuckles into contact witthe call buttons. Behind me, in the way of seeing to traffic, were the seat belt line from the back cargo area to the center back seat, and all 3 headrests also blocked my view. The back of the car supplies large corner blind spots so that there is no adjustment that lets you see cars coming from behind you right or left. I never achieved a position that alieviated the sight problems, and could not find the knob to adjust the outside view mirrors. The seats are made of a shiny cover material so I was unsteady and sliding off them, these are "cloth" seats, I think, that also had a heated feature with controls front and down on the center console. The seats are supposed to be buckets, but are so uncomfortable, stiff and slippery that it was more like a personal bench seat. The dials and knobs on the radio and heat are cheap shiny silver plastic that really feel and look rather low class. The dashboard is still the sticky soft fake leather that I had in my 2008 Outback and already sported a layer of fuzz and dust that I know from experience cannot be removed. The feel of the ride, compared to my old Outback that needs struts, was just as bouncy and all over the road as my 08, so maybe I don't need that strut job afterall. The Forester has LOTS of headroom, and a moonroof, but the front dash seemed all wrong, nothing was near enough for me to be able to use it easily or without stretching and craning. Acceleration was awful in that it jerked around, although I am willing to say that maybe that was me not being able to find a comfortable seating position. In slow and go traffic I had trouble keeping it completely straight on, and there was a little audio buzzer on the dash to tell me each time I strayed close to my lane line and yet nothing to tell me when other people were coming into my lane. Climate controls were hard to figure out -- remember this coming from an Outback owner. Maybe a larger person than myself would appreciate the shape of this car, but for someone 5 feet 5" this car was too big and uncomfortable. When it comes time to replace my 08 Outback I will be looking at something that does not put me in a 4 wheel skyscraper. I thought it was good on gas, maybe because it has a larger tank than my Outback. But it would also be too tall for me to load my kayak as I am used to doing.

Had the vehicle less than 3 months. It has been in the shop on 3 occasions two of which were multiple days. The main problem is the quality of the interior. There are multiple rattles throughout the vehicle. The two main rattles still haven't been fixed. The engine is under powered. No acceleration at all. Road noise is bad. Ride is rough. Update. I was impressed by the reviews i read. I have owned Toyotas and Hondas and always was happy with most of the features in those vehicles. The front seat of my Forester is very uncomfortable. There is a wire in the seat and a metal bar below it. They create pressure on your bum and this is very uncomfortable after 30 minutes of driving. unbearable after 2 hours. The narrow center section is lower then the sides. They press on the side of your leg. I spent over $300 trying to find a cushion to make it bearable. My wife want's to sell the car after 6 months. I have finally made a cushion which is acceptable. Other things I don't like: there are two volume controls. on the dash, you must hold your fingers away from the touch screen or the station changes when you rotate your hand. The volume control on the wheel is very touchy. if you don't press exactly in the center you change the station when you change the volume. There is not a light in the cargo area. Don't try to see anything in the dark. The AC is inadequate on hot days. The heat is inadequate on cold days. The brakes are just ok. I fear they will be inadequate when they have more wear. My brother has a forester a few years older then my 2016. The dealer want's $1000 to change the spark plugs. Said the engine needs to be jacked partway out of the car. Nice ride in the summer. In the winter the shocks are too stiff. Rough ride.

It is too soon to answer some of these questions such as fuel economy, but my experience so far is good. I especially like the visibility with full Windows all around and the driver's seat raised. I wish the passenger seat was also electrically controlled it is comfortable as is. I especially liked dealing with the people at Matin CA Suburu/Mazda dealership p. Straight forward, reasonable price. No need for dickering. They didn't push extras . I drove my car off the showroom floor the first daY went in. I have returned a few times for more operating instructions which they gladly give. I got the security feature Eye Sight. That and other features made a lot to remember. The price below includes registration, license, tax, $1400 for 3 year maintenance at Suburu, and gap insurance recommended for first few months to insure replacement if my coverage falls a bit short. ( I have a comprehensive insurance.). Update. I am not thrilled with mpg, but I am told the reading is not totally accurate the first few months and I am primarily a short distance driver. Example I drove 11 miles mostly freeway but also in town with three or four stop lights. The mpg at end of 11 miles was 23.5. All city driving it is quite a lot lower. One long freeway drive it got up to 29 mpg.

Leased my 2016 Forester 6-speed manual brand new. I have 27,500 mi on it now and getting ready to either buy it out or sell it for a Honda...I don't hate it but I don't love it. No real issues but some petty annoyances....the light fabric seats are AWFUL to keep clean (and I put seat covers on all of them the day I bought it), I'm afraid to let my small dogs in the car. 20 pound dog toenails made little indentation marks all over the cheap, crappy center console cover after ONE car ride. NO cargo area lighting worth a crap- seems stupid to have virtually no lighting in a hatchback...all the interior fabrics and plastics seem so delicate to me for this being a vehicle marketed to active lifestyles. My husband put his foot up against the silver plastic above the glovebox and the plastic actually wiped away in scratches when I went to clean it off! ? the stock tires suck and the steel wheels are already pitted and rusty. Goes through a lot of coolant and oil but only sometimes so I have to keep a close eye (and this is with hyper-regular oil changes and service maintenance. The rear visibilty is awful. I used to be a great parallel parker but I hate trying to park this car- even with the back-up camera...always feel like im just not seeing something and thus avoid anything but pull-in spots and that's just lame. I dunno. It's a decent car but and I feel super safe while driving which is a plus. No major issues yet but I expect it to be really expensive when that does happen. Love the 6 speed manual though. I will probably keep it but I think i'll go Honda next time.

Original owners, have had the car for just over 70,000 miles. No mechanical or electrical problems so far. Fuel economy 22-28 mpg at highway speeds, 300 miles for sure on a tank of gas. 4wd snow traction is good with General Altimax Arctic or Hankook Ipike tires. Wet road traction is excellent with either of these tires. Switched to Subaru 16” steel wheels, 16x6.5, these are spare tire wheels for year 2012 or older. Good low speed acceleration, mostly ok highway passing power. Steering wheel adjusts up/down and in/out which is helpful. Good brakes. Good visibility from inside to outside. Nice heavy duty floor mats, much better than aftermarket. For first 11,000 miles, switched to 5w-30 conventional oil with oil changes every 3k miles. I saved the oil and filter and reinstalled in the car after 11,000 miles. At this point switched back to 0w-20 full synthetic oil. Current oil consumption is less than 1 quart between 6000+ mile oil changes. Fine print in manual said 5w-30 was ok. Interior heater / defroster when below freezing best to let the car warm up for at least 10 minutes so windshield can defrost. Seat covers stain easy, clean-up water stains them too. Delay of vehicle movement shifting from forward to reverse or back, have to plan for this lag time.

My husband and I love our 2016 Subaru Forester, but I just cannot figure out why they would make this car with gray interior. It is flimsy and poor quality and any dirt or smudge makes a mark. For an SUV, active vehicle, and/or family vehicle, I really look down on the design of the interior.

Been told be several Subaru owners that if you buy a Subaru that you'll never buy anything else. That could not be further from the truth. Between the constant recalls, incompetent Subaru dealerships, break downs, cheap interior, under powered engine and worst transmission ever, I promise i will never own this hunk a crap ever again. Once the car hit 75k the transmission needed replacing (dealership did everything possible to void the warranty), all 4 CV axles needed replacing, engine is very loud and after 75k it needed premium gas to run correctly even after tune up, the upper and lower control arms needed replacing and i lost count on the recalls. Only good thing I'll say about this car is that it has a smooth ride

Have the XT and it is worth the money. Plenty of power and the driving settings are very fun. Have been in really deep snow and never got stuck. Lots of cabin space and leg room front and back. Love the CVT transmission. It's as smooth as can be. Eyesight works well and is very nice in traffic. Heated seats are great. Sunroof is huge. The navigation system needs to be improved. I also don't understand why the rear does not get its own set of air vents. Highly recommend this car.

We bought our 2016 Crystal Black Silica Forester LTD in January of 2016. We had not looked at a Forester as we deemed it too much of a "Family" car. One that Men don't usually drive! (Sorry!) But having reached the end of our ropes with other makes and models with one short-coming or another, we decided, OK, the Forester is EVERYWHERE, there MUST be a reason. Well yeah there is! It is one great car and so much like my old 2003 Jeep Wrangler with utilitarian ways but OH SO stylish and elegant as well and the Harmon-Kardon 440a sound system rocks! This ride is one great ride and the quality (at every glance and every turn I find another little special detail!) is totally off the map. They didn't miss anything. We love it and we'll probably buy another. It's so much better than my 1984 Subaru 4x4 Turbo wagon! That thing was a story in itself! It was awful. But, 32 years is a long time to hold a grudge. The testament to Subaru is that we went back for more! This car is one great car. The moon-roof is one of the biggest in the business. HUGE! :)

We wound up getting the special edition 2017 Subaru Forester XT turbo. We LOVE the vehicle. Its fast, reliable, looks great and my wife is in love with her new truck. I have the 2006 WRX which I love. We are happy to be a Subaru family!!
