Performance

How does the GLB-Class drive? In our testing, the GLB 250 reached 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, which is properly quick and at the top of the class. When you stomp the pedal, there's a noticeable delay before it starts accelerating, but with a lighter pedal application, it gets underway smoothly.

The GLB isn't particularly exciting to drive, but it is more capable than most SUV owners will need. The GLB's brakes are easy to control for smooth stops and impressively strong when you need to make an emergency stop. Around turns, the GLB feels sure-footed and planted.

Comfort

8.5/10

How comfortable is the GLB-Class? The optional multi-contour seats with ventilation and heating are comfortable for hours at a time. The massage function doesn't actually massage. Rather, it subtly changes the seatback and cushion angles to shift your contact points, which in theory should help alleviate soreness on long trips. The rear seats are lower and shorter, which means taller passengers will find thigh support lacking, but not by much.

The suspension tuning is on the soft side in Comfort mode, easily soaking up road imperfections. It can feel a little floaty on certain broad undulations, but it's far from unsettling. Sport mode dials out that softness without introducing any harshness. The cabin is pleasantly quiet on the highway, even on coarser surfaces.

Interior

How’s the interior? The GLB's ride height and tall door openings make it easy to get in and out of. There's no need to step up or stoop down — just slip on in. Once inside, you'll find that all of the controls are logically placed and, after a very short time, you can operate them without having to take your eyes off the road.

The GLB boxy shape affords generous space compared to most of its competitors. Its tall windows provide excellent outward visibility. One minor downside: The sun visors are too small and don't provide full coverage when moved to the side of the vehicle.

Technology

8.5/10

How’s the tech? The GLB gets high marks for its tech features. It comes with Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. MBUX is the easiest and best system out there, with many ways to control functions. It sometimes take a moment to process voice commands, but they work accurately.

The GLB's driver assist features are particularly good. The adaptive cruise works great whether you're driving in dense highway traffic or cruising on the open highway. The lane-keeping assist system can be a little too aggressive in trying to keep you in the lane, but that situation is pretty rare.

Storage

8/10

How’s the storage? The GLB's boxy shape comes in handy when taking on cargo. It'll accommodate big and bulky objects, and the low liftover height of the cargo floor and the standard power liftgate make loading easier. There are also plenty of places to keep your personal items, with large door pockets and a sizable center bin. Spring-loaded cupholder tabs keep narrow beverages secure too.

For family duty, the GLB should work out OK. A rear-facing infant safety seat can fit, but only if you keep the rear seats slid all the way back and the front seats in a reasonable position. We did notice that some car seat bases we tested were a bit hard to latch onto the GLB's car-seat anchor points.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates fuel economy at 25 mpg in combined city/highway driving, which is about average for the class. We observed 26 mpg on our 115-mile evaluation route, which is just a hair lower than expected but still a good result. We suspect the EPA figure should be achievable with a light foot.

Value

7.5/10

Is the GLB-Class a good value? The GLB splits the difference between the smaller and more affordable GLA and the slightly bigger and more expensive GLC. It's an appealing option as long as you know what you're getting. Buying one with a ton of options significantly inflates the price, and at that point you should consider the more refined GLC.

Compared with other extra-small luxury SUVs, you pay a little more for the GLB, but you also get more in terms of space, performance and comfort. As with most models in this class, the quality of materials feels a bit cheap in some areas, but overall the GLB feels worth its price.

Wildcard

8/10

The GLB's upright and boxy styling gives it a more traditional and utilitarian SUV look, which we like. Is the GLB fun? No, not really. But that's mostly because we've only tested the GLB 250 so far. With an AMG variant now the lineup, though, drivers seeking more excitement should be covered.

Have owned many cars and SUV's, last one a BMW X1. This one looks great, plenty of room, great ride and peppy performance from the turbo 4. The 8 speed dual clutch trans is a gem that seamlessly keeps the vehicle in the right gear to use the wide torque band. The technology can be overwhelming, but slowly getting used to.

GLB with AMG Option - review

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class GLB 250 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8AM)

This is my first Mercedes Benz. By way of comparison I owed, all new, three Jeep Cherokees/Grand Cherokees (1988,1994, 2000), two Ford Escapes (2009,2012) , and a turbo VW beetle (2004), and a Chevrolet Z-06 Corvette (2004). The workmanship on the GLB (2020) is superlative and way above my other cars. I opted for a number of options, including the AMG package and the larger flat screen … dash. I mentioned those for a couple of reasons, hereinafter. The AMG package doesn't, in the 2000 model, provide any additional horsepower. It does, however, provide for different styling, drilled rotors, larger wheels, and other items. Whilst the larger wheels are, in my view, better looking you will need to get snow tires as the AMG tires are not all season. So, if you are going to be using it in a snow environment plan ahead for that expense. Another downside to the AMG package is that the GLB factory mudflaps will not fit the AMG model. I had to use generic items and make them fit. I am 6'4" so the interior dimensions were important. I fit better in the GLB than the GLC. Moreover the visual sight lines from the GLB are also better. That being said, the driver's cockpit is a bit cramped for me on a lengthy drive. Although the seat has infinite adjustment you still have to contend with the steering wheel and the center console. In long drives I found that the edge of the center console strikes my leg about 4 inches below my right knee, and the door handle is at the same point on the left. It's difficult to move to a comfortable place regardless of where the steering wheel is placed (tilt & telescope). Also, I cannot see the complete speedometer or tachometer because the steering wheel, at my height, is blocking my view. I don't understand why Mercedes Benz does not allow the flat screen to be switched, putting the infotainment system directly in front of the driver and the speedometer/tachometer in the middle (like a Mini Cooper). I purposely bought the heads up display which solves some of those problems. It has sufficient adjustment for my height. On summer blend gas, with summer tires, I can obtain low 30mpg at 75 to 80 mph on expressways, and mid 20s with winter blend fuel, and snows. City driving, regardless of fuel or tires is low to mid 20s. Because it is a turbo, 91 octane is required. Turbo lag is not terrible. More annoying is when driving in the "comfort " transmission setting, the upshifts are terrible. You need to really accelerate to overcome the, in my view, lag time on upshifts. I found switching to "sport" in the city eliminates that issue altogether. Cargo space is great if you are carrying loose sand but, as an example, my golf clubs won't fit without one on the backseats down. Likewise, the roof rails look good but there are no crossmembers so unless you build or find something aftermarket anything narrower than the rails will be resting on the roof. Last, I tried to find the fuse panel inside the passenger compartment to wire my Valentine v1 and a dash camera. Despite where the owner's manual indicated the fuse panel is in the passenger compartment, it is yet to be found. Overall I am pleased with the car. I've only 5,000 miles so reliably hasn't been tested.

More room than expected

For a smaller SUV, we found the GLB to offer plenty of elbow room, with ample passenger and cargo space. We didn't need the 3rd row, so we don't have to worry about sacrificing cargo capacity.
