My Zoom-Zoom Sports Car
I wanted another sports car, but knees are bad and the cars are too low. I hate SUV's and trucks. I don't want to grow up. Then I saw the CX-7 on TV. Hummmm, maybe. I had a Miata that I loved. Drove the CX-7. OMG. It was love at first zoom. I truly love this car (and so do people who see it). Got my sports car, easy to get in, fun to drive like my Miada was, roomy, reclining seats, quick and sexy. Thank you Mazda.
Never Buy A Mazda CX-7
CX7 is a disaster. 1. My CX7's rotors had to be replaced in 12 months despite light footed driving. 2. 18 months into ownership and the engine light came on. The fuel valve had be replaced, and that after numerous arguments with the dealership. 3. The rear window chrome mouldings slid forward preventing opening of the front doors. The dealership replaced one side as a courtesy, but would not replace the other side. Then agreed to trim the other side. Very shoddy work! 4. 2 years in ownership the shift up/down to 3rd gear became jerky with a thud. The dealership refused to fix the issue despite regular servicing. I didn't bother to have it fixed. The car was returned at end of lease.

Mazda's Magic
We were looking for a vehicle with some cargo and good safety scores. The CX-7 delivered and much more. It was roomy enough for a three adults and a child. It has exceeded expectations in all departments except gas mileage. The sleek design does turn heads as well as its potent 244hp turbo. There is a little bit of turbo lag but the leather front seats are comfortable enough and give you that performance car feel. Handling is surprisingly good for $30k crossover. Love the xenon lights as well as the easy to read instrumentation panel. The premium fuel requirement is disturbing especially with today's gas prices. And the mileage could be better. Not satellite ready. It is an option.
Great Looking Car, but company does not stand behind it and build quality is poor
Plain and simple, if you are thinking of buying one - don't. Build quality is suspect. Company doesn't honor warranties. Company won't recall even when 1000s of customers have same issue, etc.
Pleasant Surprise
Only have 500 miles on the vehicle but am really happy with it so far. Over 23 MPG on the first tank of gas. Goes from 60 to 80 in a hurry when on the freeway. Stock stereo is sufficient for most needs and standard features are more than found on most vehicles.
Gas Mileage review
Replaced LF strut. Bad from factory; had to align at 2000 miles. Gas mileage was 29 to 31 first trip. Gas mileage was 19 second trip same route. Can't figure out what changed. Dealer of course does not know why.
Fun to drive, looks sharp
I bought my CX-7 about a week ago. Incredibly fun to drive. Transmission changes gears smoothly and effortlessly. Never feels heavy or ponderous. Able to zip ahead when you want to pass, whether you're going 30 or 80. Handling and braking are very good. Handles turns and cloverleafs much better than other SUVs without feeling like the car is leaning. Exterior styling is great. People have walked up in parking lots to ask about it and offer compliments on how good it looks. Have found myself just going out to drive, or heading to a store 20 miles away just to get a chance to drive a little more.
Lexus look with Mazda price!
This is a great midsize SUV for the money. I trust Mazda's engineering as I've owned Mazdas in the past and the car drives extremely well. The car handles quite nicely and despite it being a 4 cylinder, the turbo more than makes up for it not being a v6. It is comfortable for all riders and the back area, while not huge, is ample for groceries, luggage and all the other thing you typically haul.
My worst nightmare EVER!!!!!!
When I first saw a CX-7 on the road, I wanted one immediately. A couple months later I then owned one.. and for the first 2 years and 5 months later, and 52,000 miles into owning this vehicle the A/C compressor went out. The worst part is that because the check engine light and/or the temp on the vehicle never told me that there was a problem. So to my surprise when I finally got off the freeway, after driving home about 250 miles... my car was literally a ball of smoke. The AC compressor went out and then affected the idler pully, some other type of pully, the harmonic balancer, and ultimately affected the engine...no compression left. They wanted $12,900 to fix it...
Really Like It
We have only had it a couple of weeks, but we really enjoy driving it. Our only issue is the fuel economy (and need for premium) but we knew about it before we bought it and are willing to trade the mileage for the fun. CX-7 is very responsive in most driving situations even in full auto mode. We do worry about risk of tickets while enjoying the CX-7 (even though we're over 60).
Best Looking/Great Drive
I just crossed 36000 miles on my CX-7 FWD GT. I got it with the tech package, so it is loaded. Have had all the recommended services done. As I write this, the gas cap problem occurred way back in June 2007. Otherwise, the car has been exceptionally fun to drive. Get about 21 mpg (what I expected) and drive 60/40 highway/city. No a/c to rear, which is a bummer for the kids. That would be my biggest gripe. Also, the tires lasted to 30k, and i'm on my 2nd set. Otherwise, this has been a great car for me and my family. The fun-to- drive factor is off the charts. I live driving down two-lane country roads with inclines and curves. The car just responds so incredibly well. Go for it!
In the Beginning
Getting in and out of the vehicle has been made very user friendly with the use of the advanced keyless entry. Walk up to the vehicle open the door, get in, and start the vehicle without any key. The CX-7 is very responsive in the throttle and in the steering. Thus far I enjoy this more than my 2005 BMW 330Xi as far as space, entry, creature comforts, versatility of options, & of course riding at elevation. With the sport transmission, getting from 0-60 is more than quick enough. The ride on the 18's is just right. Handles like a sports car and takes road imperfections like a luxury. This vehicle is spirited and insightful.
High performance, Great Value Mid-SUV
I was in the market for a larger AWD car to replace my wife's current BMW 528i. We test drove Honda, Toyota, Ford, BMW, Suzuki, Volvo and all were either poor performers or overpriced. The CX-7 combined the performance and value we were looking for in a car which is fun to drive. The Sport version comes with quite a few standard options though we added the driver electric seat and remote start. The car's only negative in my opinion is the turbo-lag which doesn't kick in until 2000 RPM. In terms of value, the CX-7 is $3k-$15k cheaper than its competition (Pilot, Murano, X3).
sweet ride
My wife & I are just having way to much fun. This ride is way above our expectations. We originally set our sights on FX-35 (infinity) & RX-330 (Lexus), until she found this. With the quality & reliability of Mazda. We ordered ours through Costco & they delivered it to the nearest dealer, no haggling just a great deal. Ours is pearl white with sand leather, Homelink 6-disc Bose & moonroof. We also ordered after market wheels & tires. This SUV really turns heads. SWEET RIDE.
Rent it don't buy it
This car has some major issues and I don't have to repeat all what has been said by others. This car has amazing brakes and speed. It can take off like it was sports car.. not bad for 2 ton SUV. Every thing else is rubbish, the ride is very harsh, the tires are crap, and AC is not cold at all. I sold mine and got ML350 and I can tell the difference in the built quality.
Buyer Beware
This crossover is fun to drive, that's it. Mechanical problems. It requires premium fuel and the gas mileage is about 16-17 city miles. Only gets about 275-300 miles per 18 gallon tank.
Love to drive it but it's junk
I have had the transmission replaxed after 30,000 miles and the keyless entry replaced & thank the lord it was under warranty as well as the transmission. At 25,000 miles I needed new tires even though I rotated them as needed as well as all maintenance thru the dealer. I have always owned GM products & got atleast 40,000 on my tires so what is the deal with that? $800 a bit early. The last straw was a headlight that went out and it was a board that was $850. My milage at this time was 36,500. Too bad for a car I love to drive but will never buy another one & am looking to trade for a GM model. That will be the last foreign car I buy!!
New Car
There is a huge blind spot when backing up, the cockpit is rather tight; the large wheels make getting in and out more difficult than I realized at first. It is fun to drive, but the cabin space is more limited than I realized at first. The fuel gauge is hard to see and I have almost run out of gas twice. The ride is very smooth and it accelerates quickly. The tires are set very wide and I have hit a curb several times already.
Advise please?
I have owned my Mazda CX7 for three years, with very little problems. However, I am concerned about possible turbo issues down the road. Would love to hear about other owners of 2007 CX7's with over 60K? I have about 50K on mine. I currently love the car. I had one issue in which the warranty covered with no questions (I did have to show my maintenance records). This was for the the VVT / Time chain issue. Mazda took care of it, no problems, even provided me a loaner car!
Great sporty SUV...

2007 Mazda CX-7
The car looks nice but the tires are terrible. I only have 11,000 miles on the car and already need to replace all 4. I'm only 5'2 and there are a lot of blind spots in this vehicle. Fuel efficiency is ok, thankfully I only drive around town.
thumbs up
Thus far I am very happy. Especially with the value for to price. A lot for little. Don't like turbo lag. Maybe the 6th gear was not needed? I am having some problems with the automatic jerking while it decides if it should change gears. I hope the dealer will adjust this.
ZOOM ZOOM
Got this vehicle one week ago and it is absolutely awesome. I love how it handles and the power of the engine. The body is definitely sleek and sexy and i have the black with tinted windows which makes it even more so.
Solid, Fun, and Very Usable
This is my second review. I was allowed to purchase my own company car, and work as a consultant for a manufacturer. I travel throughout the Southeast US, doing exhibits and speaker engagements. I can pack my entire exhibit in my CX-7, and motor to anywhere work takes me. I've put 50,000 on the car in one year. I love it! I might complain about the average of 20.5 to 22 mpg. But, maybe if I slowed down I'd get better mileage. I'll keep the zoom zoom. Really, this car drives like a sports car, has the space of a small suv, and has performed flawlessly first year. I can't wait to see how Mazda improves on this unit in years to come. I will be trading in a couple years you know.
Bad Reliability
I bought the first model year for this vehicle and it came with some issues. When i had 14,000 miles, the engine seal was leaking and they had to do some major repairs to the engine, luckily this was under warranty. At 42,000 the air compressor failed and broke the serpentine belt and major issues to the AC system, unfortunately i was out of warranty and i was responsible for all costs. Ended up trading in the vehicle due to so many issues.
Zoom Zoom
I love this car. I got the Black Cherry with upgraded Sand Leather - WOW! Everyone loves it. I love the fact they're hard to find on the road - not everyone has figured out the new secret. I debated between this and the new Acura RDX, but for the money - this was a steal. Must haves: Navigation Package - it is awesome!
Piece of Junk
Bought this car for my wife last January. She liked the styling and the performance over her Explorer. Big mistake. Have had it in the shop several times for stupid problems like wheels locking up while driving, windows not working, and the passenger side airbag light staying on (meaning the airbag is off) even when an adult is in the seat. Gas mileage is atrocious for a 4 cylinder. I don't have an issue with 18 mpg, but a 4 cylinder... let's be serious, especially with premium gas. Sticker on the car said 24 mpg on the highway, obviously they meant a downhill highway when you are driving with a fierce tailwind. Seats are incredibly uncomfortable & terrible resale value. Don't buy it!
Just Got Mine
I have always had a family car, van, sedan etc. This one I bought for me...okay the wife too. I have had it only for the weekend now. Without the expletives, it's FUN! The handling is great, someone said low end power not good, what? This is peppy. I drove the Murano also, which is really what I intended to get, but after test driving this, WOW, this one made the impact on me. I love this car, put 200 miles on it in 2 days. Any reason to go to the store, I go, even if it's just for toothpicks. I know this is not a technical review. I too can not stop looking at it, it's a head turner, I like watching people when the first see it, DOUBLE TAKE! Love turning those heads.
Worth the Wait
I had researched Crossovers for quite some time before discovering the CX-7. Even before it was out I could tell it was the vehicle I was looking for. It has been a love affair since the day I picked it up. Superior handling, great design, sharp interior. Mazda really did their homework on this vehicle!
My CX-7 experience after 2 years
I love the way the CX-7 drives, when I got the junky stock tires off and upsized to 255/55/18 the ride not only got quieter but less crashy. Handling grip increased big time as well.. Next, the A/C compressor is a wide-spread issue and I've come in contact with it as well. It effects all 2007 models and some 2008's. When it happened to me I immediately had to stop driving the car, driving it any further will cause damage to it. Otherwise, my CX-7 has been mostly problem free for 52,000 miles. Nothing wrong with the turbo or the engine. Usually complaints online are far more concentrated than the actual problem itself and that's what I've discovered personally..
Must See
I shopped the Acura RDX, Murano, and 2007 CR-V (through internet). My Grand Touring AWD with Bose blew my mind. My family owns all Hondas, as did I (2004 V6 accord Aoupe). The CX-7 made me change car companies. The value of this truck is unreal and should be considered if you are looking for a mid range SUV. Handling, styling, features, and standard equipment make this a STANDOUT among its competitors. Once you test drive and see this in person, it will alter your shopping list that day.
Great Little Car
A few days after I purchased the car a huge storm hit the Northwest and I had a wedding to go to in the Mountains. I felt safe driving it from the start and never at any time had trouble with traction. I love the heated leather seats. I drove 300 hundred miles with four other people and their luggage with no problems. Most of the driving was on snow covered roads. It's maneuverable, quick and yes fun to drive even for an old guy. I've never really been into cars except for transportation and utility. I just hope I feel the same way about it after I own it for a longer period of time.
CX-7 Zooms
Minimal turbo lag, great handling. Styling and performance sold me. My wife uses this car for her daily drive to work, and this car has all the safety features needed. Only problem was with the service engine light coming on due to the gas cap which Mazda replaced.
Awesome
I was not really planning to buy a new car but couldn't resist the CX-7. Great design, great acceleration, great interior, nice navigation system. Just awesome.
Love My CX-7!
Love my CX-7!!This is the most enjoyable care to drive I've ever owned. It's very responsive. Exactly as the advertised. Feels like a large sports car, and this is what I was looking for. The build is extremely solid. Interior is very nice. It could use a few more luxury accents. All in all very sharp and functional. Some reviewers said ride was too stiff. I find it perfect for me. The engine is so quiet, but when you give it gas, it sounds like a sports car should. Fantastic sound system and acoustics. As far as cargo room. Some say it's not very big. Ok, it's supposed to be like a large sports vehicle. However, in my recent move, I could easily carry up to 8 large boxes at a time.
Bad Choice
I loved this car when we first purchased it. After 3 months we started having problems with it. It has been in the shop 14 times in the year that we have had it. Trying to get it declared a lemon. New transmission module, new computer, new tires and new engine!! Don't buy this year model!
First Model Defect to Arise!
I have been a very happy motorist for the first 60,000 miles put on my Mazda CX-7. This is my third review for this car. My car averages between 19-21 mpg. I do lots of highway traveling and I usually travel 200+ mile trips. My OEM tires lasted for 28,000. My second set of tires (not factory but dealer recommended and cheaper) will probably be replaced at 80,000. Until 60,000 I had absolutely no issues with this car. About 60,000 the fuel sensor started coming up. I have identified I trigger this failure when stepping on the gas during exit ramp to highway acceleration events. There have been three such sensor failures, seems to be a recurring defect.
Mazda's CX-7: The coolest CUV
We've just finished our lease of a 2007 CX-7, and had a very positive experience overall. Ours was an early-build '07, so we had quite a few TSB service visits at first: reprogram the TCM for highway surging, reprogram the ECM for slow speed throttle response (as delivered, a little "gas" did little, then a little more lit a rocket), install new, better protecting door seals, and finally a new A/C control head unit to prevent condenser freeze-up in very hot weather. Since then? Nada. It's been bulletproof, fun to drive, and still so "cool" to look at; *great* styling for this class. Fitting real snow tires in the winter made it unstoppable, and we had it cross-country many times.
My CX-7 GT
My only complaint is the momentary lag when accelerating. After the lag, it takes off like a bat. The premium fuel requirement hurts at the pump, but it's fun to drive.
Darth Vader Grey GT/AWD with Zoom Zoom
Knowing that this vehicle will go when asked, stop when needed and take curves with aplomb, brings joy back to driving. A driver can have one's cake and eat it with both an automatic and a six speed manual transmission all in one. Have owned this vehicle for one month and have put on 1500 miles in all terrain except off road driving. Climbed Mt. Whiteface which was a kick. Driving curvy back roads in the mountains was a hoot. Thruway driving was rock steady too. I look for excuses to go to the store taking the long way around and back.
Curious
I just bought a used CX-7 and so far I like it. I used to drive a Mazda 3 but i broke the tranny twice in 2 years. I'm hoping this one is much better. I see the reviews and now Im a bit worried. I'm curious though to see how its going to perform in the future. The car looks great and the engine strong. That TURBO is nice but wish the lag on it wasn't so long. 0-60mph in 7 sec. cant be beat for a crossover. Also the heated Leather seats are life saver out here in the cold.
awesome fun to drive
I love the fact that you don't see many on the road. Everyone is missing out on a fun vehicle to drive. Love the sound system and the performance of the turbocharged 4 cylinder. Very comfortable and the Bose system is quality. Everything about this car is quality for the price.
Cold Water on CX-7
This is a very annoying vehicle. It was the first one delivered in the area and no doubt has some new model quirks, but that does not explain a vehicle delivered with major misalignment that scrubbed the first tires in 10k miles, nor the turbo lag, nor the awful gas mileage (17-19 in almost all country driving), nor the terrible handling in snow (except straight ahead), nor the brakes that went metal to metal in 20k miles. It's pretty and fun on dry curvy roads, but overall it is a loser and will not be bought or repeated at lease end.
Good Ridence!!
My lease is up next months, good ridence. Can't wait to get rid of this car. It's fun to drive but the interior quality is horrible. Cheap carpet and floor mats. Cheap interior overall. Cute car but bye-bye!!
Just Loving It
After owning several vehicles over the year my standards are very high when it comes to new vehicles. The CX7 is great value. It's not the best crossover out there but it is the best for the money spent. Good performance, nice ride with just the right amount of options. First Mazda, let's see how it goes.
First time Mazda owner
This car is extremely responsive and accelerates beautifully. I do miss having the ambient temperature option that I had on my Oldsmobile.
Enjoying My Ride!
I had the privledge of selecting the type of car purchased by my employer. Crossovers were my choice of vehicle type, so the choice was between the Honda CR-V, Madza CX-7, or Nissan Murano price range. Test driving all three was fun, but I found that the Mazda had more sports car like characteristics than the others. I am a consultant, and often drive 400 mile trips in a given day, with meetings. The car is awesome for such trips. I arrive in comfort, refreshed, and ready to consult. Glad I picked the CX-7. Almost feel guilty sometimes, most people in my profession drive pickups. Enjoy my Zoom Zoom Zoom Mazda.
Sold Benz for the CX-7
Was tired of commuting and carting kids to sporting events in a car that had bad gas mileage and was always dirty. Selected the Mazda as an affordable, reliable and bad weather capable car that I wouldn't mind getting a bit dirty. Looked at the Tribeca and RDX. Tribeca drove like a mini van and the MDX was overpriced.
I will think twice!
I will think twice before I buy this car again. Tires were junk!! Lasted less than 23000 miles..what a rip off! After replacing with awesome Bridgestones...ride and traction is sooo much better. Within a few months a driving has to have the front end worked on...leaking front differential needed to be replaced as well as the drive shaft. I feel like I was the one who got the shaft! I am just waiting for something else to fall apart!
One week of ownership
After many weeks of looking. Decided on CX-7. Very happy we did. It is a beautiful vehicle and great to drive. First tank of gas was 19.8mpg mostly highway. My wife loves it. We also have a 2006 Honda Ridgeline and love it, but the CX-7 is a lot more fun to drive.
