Lexus ES Hybrid - Generally a great car

Have had my ES Hybrid for about 4 months and 6000 miles now, including a 2500 mile round trip from Pennsylvania to Florida. My average mpg over those 6k miles is sitting right at 39. A bit disappointing given the EPA ratings, but still pretty good given the size of the car. My best tank was 43 while doing local driving on flat roads in Florida - my worst tank was 36 on the trip home from Florida moving fairly "briskly." Hopefully my average improves as we move out of winter - gas mix will change and the gas engine definitely runs more often with the HVAC system engaged as one would expect. This review may seem mpg focused, but I imagine that's why most folks would be interested in the hybrid version vs. the standard gas engine version, as you do give up some "performance" for the better mileage. Otherwise there is not much to complain about - I personally love the looks of the very mildly updated 2022 model with the new 10 spoke wheel design in Cloudburst Gray. I had been shopping between this and an Avalon Hybrid, but in my opinion the Lexus is better looking, had much better selection (at least in November '21,) and the pricing was very similar - Toyota was marking up their limited stock while I got $1k off my Lexus that was a perfect match to the limited options I was looking for. The dealership experience was about as pleasant and low-pressure as one could ask for, and I have not had any problems with the car to date. I did look at a leftover '21 model as well in November, but that touchpad-only display interface was not very good. The '22 models still have the touchpad, but the screen is now a touchscreen as well and I use that - for me it's fairly straightforward and easy to use. Car is great for highway cruising - you do get noise from that 4cylinder engine when it's accelerating, but that's one of the hybrid tradeoffs. The rear seat doesn't fold down (there is a small pass-through) which bugged me at first, but in 6000 miles it hasn't come up once. All in all, if you're looking for a large/luxury sedan that gets great mileage and you're not ready for the jump to a full-electric vehicle you really can't go wrong with the ES hybrid - and you don't really have many other options on the market. No regrets from this buyer - I'd update from 4 star to 5 star if I could consistently hit the EPA figures like others have. UPDATE1: Now has been about 10 months since I took delivery and I have 13.5k miles on the car, with another round trip from PA to FL. The lifetime average is sitting right around 41mpg. Still a very happy customer - not a single issue over that time. I have the "Rich Creme" interior color which looks sharp, but every few month I do use a leather cleaner in the high-traffic areas to keep it looking good. And now that my wife has given in and started to drive it she likes it too - she's looking at a NX Hybrid for her next vehicle refresh... UPDATE2: Now has been about 22 months since I took delivery in Nov 2021 and just under 30k miles on the car. Lifetime average improved to 42mpg and seems to have leveled off. Still very happy with the purchase - great for my PA to FL runs and not a single reliability issue. Only complaint about the first 30k miles is the stock Bridgestone Turanza EL440 that the car came with. These were worn out at about 28k miles, even with highway driving and regular rotations so that was strike one against them. Wasn't until I replaced with a set of Michelin CrossClimate2 that I realized how much louder the stock tires were - new tires are much quieter, and perform much better in wet conditions. Time will tell how much MPG I've sacrificed for less road noise and better performance but if it's a small delta it will be worth it.

A great place to be on long drive or daily commute

This car is not a highly engaging sports sedan meant for canyon carving. However, this car is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING at being what it is built for; a luxurious, comfortable, smooth driving, great mpg, well put together, lovely place to be. The driving dynamics are a nice improvement over prior model years, (we owned a 2018 ES 350 previously). The interior is super spacious, quiet, and feels very upscale. Lexus NuLuxe material is a good leather alternative that softens with age and wears really well. Our 4+ year old ES 350 still looked new inside. Apple car play is not wireless, but plug it in and it works seamlessly. The new touch screen is the vast improvement we needed the most over the prior generation infotainment. Physical knobs and buttons for the A/C and Audio are convenient rather than sorting through screens. At the end of the day, Toyota knows how to build hybrids. This car is a wonderful vehicle, solid value, which I expect will have have insane durability and great long term reliability that we have all come to recognize as a core of Lexus vehicles. Fill up the tank and your next stop could be 600+ miles down the road.

I’ve only owned it for a couple of days so far but I am pleasantly pleased with the car and technology. I’m learning new things every time I drive it. The LTA in cruise control is cool. But I guess the most impressive thing for me is the mileage. I’ve gone 170 miles in only a quarter of a tank!!! 2/23/22: Recent purchase of the Lexus ES 300H. One of the main reasons for the purchase was the hybrid gas mileage and range. I am very pleased that I have driven over 1100 miles so far and the 43 mpg is as advertised. I also love all of the techie stuff.

I have been watching this car for a while from afar. The style of Lexus is evident throughout. It performs quite well on the highway and around town. The only negative aspects for me is the lack of Android Auto and there not being a delay in power off after killing the engine. Sometimes you want to listen to the radio after arriving at the destination without having to enter Aux mode. Love the car! Great on gas as expected and a very smooth, quiet ride.

I believe it when Lexus used to say they were relentlessly pursuing perfection. This ES is not the flagship Lexus model but it does not feel like you are compromising at all. This is a mid size sedan that rides quiet and smooth. The new touchscreen for controls and Nav is great. Fit and finish are way above standard. The hybrid system works flawlessly integrated with gas engine. I would recommend any ES model for those looking in this segment.

This car has performance, Fuel-efficiently, style, comfort…. I absolutely love it. My gas mileage is 48.3 average. I love the handling. Honestly best car ever bought. It’s my first high performance or luxury car I’ve bought… I have bought more of a Toyota or Honda buyer over the years. I am so pleased with this car so far….5 months in.

The car is a dream! Ride, comfort and style all are A+. I’ve had my Ultra Luxury trim for a year and have driven on trips and around the neighborhood In that time and now I can write about it. Flawless. This isn’t my first Lexus or hybrid from Toyota/Lexus. No one does hybrids like Toyota! They have it down and they are truly a marvel of engineering. Over the year in all seasons I’ve got 44mpg overall! Best was 52mpg and the worst was 38mpg.

Previously I had many Lincoln MKZ hybrids and this is my second Lexus ES hybrid. The Lincolns handled better but this Lexus ES hybrid is peppier, much roomier interior & trunk, more luxurious interior, better economy, better visibility all around. I do miss Lincoln’s panoramic roof and 14-way bladder controlled front seats. Very solid feeling though Navigation upgrade loses previous useable split screen and less stored radio stations & destination storage. Finding car’s low height increasing problems in entry & exit not only with aging joints and muscles but with head clearance. Also scrapping of low frontend on parking lot concrete tire stops. Wish it had folding rear seats! Wonderful cruiser but cornering at higher speeds can be a handful.

Step up from Avalon Hybrid

We currently have a 2016 Toyota Avalon Hybrid and absolutely love it. We hand vehicles down to our kids and the Avalon is headed to replace a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid that has been absolutely one of the best vehicles we have ever owned. Since we could not get our hands on to a 2022 Avalon Hybrid due to production ending we decided to look at the ES300h. Wow! We reserved one in late August and one became available in mid-November. We went in, test drove it and bought it that day. It's been less than a month, but we absolutely love the design, ride, quiet and overall build. The seat extention on the driver seat is a wonderful surprise at how more comfortable it makes the drive. Unfortunately because we bought this in the winter (MN) time, I do not expect to get near the MPG. The first tank was at just over 36 with temperatures in the 10's, 20's and 30's. Not bad in my opinion. The dealership experience was tremendous once we got connected with the right representative. Now looking at a Lexus SUV.

We were looking for another Toyota Avalon Hybrid to replace our 2016 Avalon Hybrid Limited that we gave to our son. However, with Toyota ending the Avalon production (did not like the new Crown replacement model) we were lost looking for hybrid replacement. The Camry was uncomfortable in comfort, do not care for Honda and the European models seemed too expensive. When we were told that Lexus had the sister to the Avalon (Lexus 300) we contacted the local Lexus dealer. We always looked at Lexus as a bit out of our budget. Once we test drove the ES250 (Camry's sister and just as uncomfortable in our opinion) and the ES300h we immediately feel in love with the ES300h. We placed our name into the dealers reservation list and less than 3 months later we had out ES300h Luxury. We picked it up in November 2022 and have absolutely enjoyed every mile in the car. The comfort in the drivers and front passenger seats is so enjoyable. Something I did not expect to enjoy so much was the extending drivers seat. What a game changer for me. It absolutely takes out any leg fatigue on longer trips. Would love to have this on any future vehicle we buy. The interior is very nice and luxurious. For some reason the manual clock on the dashboard makes the interior that much more luxurious. The touchscreen is so easy to use. The CarPlay for Apple is okay. The trunk space is huge. Even more than our Avalon which we did not think it could be. Cannot think of negative. The so-called experts knockdown the ES300 for its rear seats not folding down. Not an issue with us as we have an SUV that we can use when longer/larger items need to be transported. So for us not an issue. One thing we now regret is not having the 360 birds-eye panoramic view. We have it on our 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander and love it. Wish we would have spent the extra $. Looking forward to many more years of spending time in our 2023 ES300h.

The vehicle is beautiful and comfortable; fit and finish is top notch and the 2023 is completely up to date with a modern infotainment system and wireless CarPlay. I have the F Sport Handling which allows to change drive modes and there is a noticeable difference between the modes - almost like deciding what car you want to drive each time you get in. Have only been averaging 36-37 mpg after the first two weeks of being over 40 - might be cold weather or the 19” rims. Overall very happy and hope it is as reliable as the gas version.

2022 lexus es300h average vehicle

I bought one about 3 months ago and it has about 5k miles on it so I guess it was enough time to get to know this car well. first of all, the gas mileage is showing average 41MPG so far, not far from the published range. but to be honest, I am quite disappointed with this vehicle for several reasons. one of the primary reasons I bought this car was for its known comfort in ride & low overall noise level. I am not sure it is due to the Bridgestone tires it came with but it is not very comfortable.. you feel all the imperfections on the road, not so planted and solid feel. also the noise level from tire and wind is noticeably worse than Nissan Altima I used to own. compared to my other Mercedes GLE, this car feel very light and tinny. for now I am stuck with this set of tires but I am not sure if different set of tires will dramatically improve this issue. I should have looked more on other brands cars but I didnt, I guess I trusted the reputation Lexus carries. if you are looking for a quiet solid comfortable luxury(not real one but good enough) vehicle- this will not deliver. hopefully at least this car stays trouble free.

We bought a 2023 model with 8200 miles on it about six months ago. So far our WORST mileage has been 46 mpg. The car is great on the highway and around town. Very comfortable and while zero to sixty in 8.3 seconds isn’t great, it’s plenty good for merging and passing. We have had three tanks at better than 50 mpg. Drive with a light foot and the EPA numbers are easy to beat. It is odd that it is difficult to find an ES with leather (which ours has).

It’s been almost 2 years and 28,000 miles since I got this car. It is very comfortable ride, the only issue I had earlier that my speakers didn’t work and I had to wait for a part almost a month besides that I’m pretty pleased with the car if you are looking for a comfortable ride with low gas mileage (40mpg in average) I would highly recommend it.

Love the car. It’s exactly what I was looking for in an entry-level luxury vehicle, the price was fair and I did get the extended warranty. It’s a comfortable, smooth, quiet ride. There’s lots of bells and whistles that I’m not used to having had a Toyota Sienna for the last 20 years, but I’m quickly (and happily) adapting. We keep our cars awhile, so I do wonder about how long the gadgets will work.

Car rides soft which is good for long trips but the handling is terrible, could use a better suspension tuning and wider tires. The best part is the Mark Levinson system which sounds really good. The infotainment is not user friendly at all. The camera is easily the worst camera quality even compared to my first vehicle with a backup camera in 2013. The wood feels like cheap plastic. Should have waited until Mercedes had an E class available. Hopefully once the chip shortage is over then I can upgrade to a 5 Series, E Class or A6.
