The 2020 Soul LX...Rare: Value without Compromise

Happy Wanderer, 07/02/2019
2020 Kia Soul LX 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl CVT)
272 of 279 people found this review helpful

Purchased the base model LX w/ the CVT transmission 4 weeks ago, and have already taken it "out west" on a road trip that thoroughly tested it's performance, comfort, and utility. We are pleased with our purchase with no regrets. While previous owners love their older model year Souls, the 2020 Soul is a completely different vehicle. I had previously test driven the first two generations of the Soul, and opted for other vehicles instead due to the base engine not having enough power for the frame. The current (2020) 2.0 L, 4 banger engine paired with the CVT just work well together. Where the old base model engines struggled at highway speeds, and the old transmissions clunked at key freeway speeds, the new base engine and transmission are smooth and effortless. The only thing that challenged our Soul base box at all was driving the Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park...one of the highest altitude roads in the world. Even then, the Soul did just fine, the engine just had to work a little harder, but the vehicle handled beautifully. Once you add the 2020 base powertrain to the superior engineering of the vehicle, it's probably the best value vehicle on the market. The Soul's fantastic roominess, and cargo capacity engineered into such a small footprint, combined with it's new sleeker and funky style, industry leading infotainment system (included in the base model price!), and best in the business warranty make this purchase a no brainer. Once you consign yourself to considering a value purchase, take a test drive, and the quality, comfort, and pleasure of driving the vehicle will sell itself. My recommendation is not to opt up to the turbo version. The new base model engine and transmission together are adequate to the point of feeling "peppy" in normal driving, and the base model (LX) inside and outside look and feel refined. You may want to opt up to a just slightly higher S trim to gain active driving safety features and alloy wheels. To me, everything after that is cosmetic, adding more money to the price than what you get back in value and options. The LX and S models are finished enough, with enough features and quality driving performance to feel infinitely much more upscale than they actually are. Every time we drive this vehicle, we can't help but feel pleased with the product, and thrilled by the relatively small price paid for it compared to anything comparable on the market.

2020 Kia Soul LX

I went with the LX trim with automatic transmission because I got a great deal on one at my local dealership. I've owned mine for a few weeks now. I was impressed with the space and seat comfort for being such a compact car. It feels way bigger than it is when you are inside the vehicle. I can fit 3 of my best friends in mine without issues and they are big dudes. The smallest one is around 275 pounds at 6 foot 2 inches. The vehicle handles very well, the 2 liter is surprisingly peppy, and that has a lot to do with the new ivt. It is a really smooth and the power band change is very quick when you put the peddle down. I am extremely impressed with the transmissions response time. Makes the car feel a lot faster than it actually is. The ride is a bit on the firm side even in my base trim. If you are on a bunch of uneven pavement. You are going to feel it. It is very refined on smooth pavement. I used to drive a sports car as my daily driver so it honestly feels similar to my old car. Not a bad thing, but it is a warning for people in rougher rode conditions. I live in Tennessee. We have a bunch of mountains, but our roads are decent. I've had no issues in my area. Handles slopes better than expected. The base LX trim comes with android auto/apple car play. It is a basic system, but definitely a nice addition. Play around with the equalizer for the speakers. They have a nice amount of bass if you tune it right. A surprise for an entry level model. I actually don't feel the need to upgrade the sound system. AC is important to me. I hate being hot in a vehicle. They got one heck of a good AC unit in this car and the fan speed will blow your hair back. People never mention AC in their reviews, but I do. The new redesign looks fantastic. It looks like a baby land rover. I do recommend the base 2 liter engine over the turbo from a reliability stand point. A turbo is fine if you take care of it, but a regular engine will take more abuse without all the fuss. It has plenty of power to do what you need with the base engine. Try them both out and see what you think. The LX trim does also offer remote start if purchased from the factory. Mine did not come with it, but I love that feature. Going to add remote start to mine at a later date.

The S model: my perfect car

Desert Rat, 09/10/2019
2020 Kia Soul S 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl CVT)
152 of 158 people found this review helpful

Get the S model for safety features. It’s easy to slide in and out. No sinking down into a pit, no climbing up steps. Easy on the back. Neck fusion? The high roof means you don't have to twist neck sideways while tilting down to avoid hitting frame. This is exactly the car I have been looking for. Just a second car, I didn’t want to spend too much, and thought I wouldn’t get a ride as comfortable or powerful as the departing 2013 Camry for the high teen$. I first insisted the replacement have the basic safety features, blind spot and rear cross traffic monitoring. No other small car has it. I found the Soul did, and even better the S model adds Forward and Rear Collision braking, and Lane Keeping Assist. 5 star safety rating! Next requirement was comfort for bad backs. The Camry wasn’t bad but the Soul is more supportive. Then power. Was very surprised at the pep of this new engine, being significantly below 200 Hp. Totally satisfying and I really like my first CVT. It’s very smooth and you can’t hear that asinine fake shifting noise manufacturers put on CVT cars for no known good reason - Unless you are pushing the engine really hard. Roominess. AMAZED at how cavernous this car feels when you get in. The square design makes it wide and high on the inside. Leg room for rear passengers is a bit better than most larger SUVs. The rear seats just as comfortable as front. They don’t waste space with a big trunk usually never used. Put down the rear seats if you need to carry and you have a box truck to load. Fun to drive. Kind of like a souped up golf cart. You may not like Lane Keeping Assist as it keeps jarring you to get to the center. [Actually it totally steers itself as long as you have white lines defining the lane @ 40 mph+, but it releases after about 12 seconds without human input]. You can elect to use just warning instead or turn it off. Its the same in every car made with this feature so you may be used to it already. It has very little body roll and smooths the bumps out better than the Camry. They’ve come a long way in suspensions since 2013. Nice... it doesn’t have exactly the features I hate! Some of my annoyances that are usually stuck on every car aren't on this including but not limited to: Sunroof- in the hot desert I don't need the sun beating down fighting the AC through cardboard headliners; Automatic Climate Control - you know, the ones that cant get it right so you have to manually adjust them anyhow. This has the good old set your temperature out of the vents (with knobs, by the way, not flat buttons you cant feel) and that’s what the cabin temperature will be. Automatic transmission - I like smooth manuals instead of the shifting feeling of automatics so this smooth CVT is welcome. The ridiculously stupid pretend shift sound/feeling manufacturers put in CVT cars is thankfully barely noticeable in this car. And THANKS for not putting those totally stupid steering wheel shifters in the car. Try shifting in a turn when you can’t find the paddles! Stupid! Moving on, convenience features like two 12v and a USB outlet are nice, I like the Johnson bar parking brake, tire pressure monitoring and digital information center in the instrument cluster, actual knobs for the radio in addition to those controls on the steering wheel and the ultra bright monitor screen even in daylight6. Comes with Apple Play and Android, (a feature BMW charges $80 a year for after purchase). Sad that it doesn’t have Navigation in this model but the Apple map feature is great. Except here in the mountains/desert where its easy to run out of cell service. Keep a GPS handy if you travel into the nowhere lands. If you need Homelink for your garage door, buy the $250 rear view auto dimming mirror accessory that has those buttons. Seats are manual pump up, retro fun! Outside mirrors and windows are electric. No unnecessary repetitive satellite radio. All told, I love this car. It’s exactly what I’ve wanted and takes a lot less work to drive than my wifes computerized everything but heavenly Q5.

I traded in a 2016 kia soul base for a 2020 kia soul s... My 2016 only had 25000 miles and was in great shape... Absolutely no complaints... Great little car... That being said... This 2020 soul s is world's above the 2016 model in just about every way... Rides better... Handles better... Feels better... Transmission is fantastic... Very smooth exceleration... Much better pick up... This car is maybe the best on the small suv segment... And I've test driven them all... Great value as well... And the S trim comes standard with all the active safety features like lane keep assist... Emergency braking... Blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert and something called driver attention warning... Great car!

Good commuter car

I've had the 2020 Soul S for 5 weeks and 2500 miles, and I've had 0 problems with it. My average gas milage has been around 33-34, even when driving around in Southern California (traffic jams!) for two weekends. The AC works well, and is blasting cold air within 2 minutes, even in the Las Vegas heat. The seats are comfortable. It's obviously not a sports car, but it goes up mountain roads at 70 mph without trouble. The entertainment system works well with my Android phone, including navigation. The safety features are worth the upgrade from the LX to the S trim. I considered moving up to the EX trim, but it did not add any must-have features for me.

Bought wife new red 2020 Kia Soul GT for our 50th wedding anniversary. First new car since buying Mercury Marquee in 2007 (Which we still have,I drive this big boat) She loves the Kia and drove it from Pa to Va the other day. Was not fatigued from long drive. “The seat cradles your body” Loves all the storage room in back with seats down. Loves the maps feature using in iPhone with dash monitor. Apple AirPlay another + Also back up camera impresses her. Loves the handling and tight steering, firm braking sure footed feeling.

I disagree with the the statement about the road noise is not good in this car. I been in far more expensive vehicles with more road Noise then this car. This car is far superior than a Nissan versa by 1000%. I am 6’1 over 200 lbs. I am a big guy and I fit good and comfortable in the 2020 Kia Soul. I traded in my Nissan for it. I do not care what anyone says the Kia has more room in it then the Nissan does and the Kia rides so much better. The road noise is far less the my Nissan ever could wish to be. My new Kia can keep up with traffic. From stat the Kia can reach the speed limit a lot faster then the Nissan. Kia has so much more tech the my Nissan did as well. So far the Kia Soul it performs in outmatches Nissan versa by afar. Looking at the outside you would not think you would have much room inside but it might surprise you. It surprised us. If you are on the fence go and take one out for a drive.

The difference between a tortoise and a hare

I traded a 2017 Soul Plus 2.0 (AKA Tortoise) for a 2020 Soul GT 2.0. Although they have the same engines. The transmission is what makes the difference. My 2017 was sluggish on take off and would wind out of gear when punched for speed. The 2020 is like a totally different vehicle. Kia really did the soul justice. It handles like a sports car and the acceleration is always there when you need it. No disappointments at all, right down to the two tone black cherry and crimson red paint job. It's a real head turner. Do yourself a favor and go buy one. You will not have one bit of buyers remorse.

2020 Kia Soul Delivers Exactly What You Need!

2020 Kia Soul LX 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl CVT)

Choose your trim level to suit your budget and taste. Whatever you choose, you'll get a solid performer you'll quickly fall in love with. No question about it. We traded in a 2013 Base Trim Soul with manual transmission for the 2020 LX with the IVT transmission. One of us was tired of so much shifting. We also switched colors from Shadow to Snow White Pearl. What didn't change was our enjoyment of the Soul. The 2020 has more power and is slightly, but not noticeably bigger. The design is more refined, but it still shouts KIA Soul to anyone who sees it. As for the IVT (KIA's version of a CVT), if you didn't know it was a CVT, you probably wouldn't know. No "rubber band effect." No "droning." Instead, you get 8 fixed ratios that emulate a normal automatic transmission anytime you use more than a light throttle. Switch to Sport mode and it's even more normal feeling. You can even select individual ratios from the Drive position for things like descending hills or to feel like you're even more in control. Seats are way better than our Gen 1 2013 model, with good bolsters, etc. The new touch screen works beautifully with Apple Car Play or Android Auto, but you do have to plug in your phone with a USB cable. No problem. Performance? Plenty. Even on short freeway on-ramps, half throttle will let you reach traffic speed for merging without strain. Passing? Downshifts are smart and make the most of the IVT's 8 fixed ratios. No problem. If you're heavy on the throttle, the engine makes a rorty, satisfying noise, too, so your friends will be impressed. And speaking of friends, they'll be very comfy in the back seat of the 2020 Soul, with loads of leg and head room. No friends? Then, fold down the back seats and you'll have a spacious cargo area for all your junk. Even with the seats up, there's room back there for all the suitcases you need to take on your road trip. This is our second Soul, and we hope they're still making Souls when this one hits its 5-year, 60,000 mile warranty point. If not, then we'll keep it through the 10-year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Want an affordable car you're sure to love? Check out the 2020 KIA Soul at your local dealer, but bring your information and your trade-in with you, because you're going to want to drive away in one. Guaranteed. Whether you get a base LX like ours or the maxed-out GT-Line Turbo trim, your Soul will soon be a well-loved part of your family!

Wow, I am a 60 year old car guy and never ever thought I would own a Kia. Take a look at the Kia's overall quality rating lately, it beats them all. This new 3rd generation 2020 Kia Soul GT is the Bomb. Kia got this one right. I use mine as a daily driver mostly city driving with some highway driving thrown in. Good acceleration, quiet ride & sporty handling. It has plenty of pep with excellent gas mileage and is fun to drive. Interior has a nice finish out, controls are easy to find and it is very roomy for a car this size. Huffiness Kia in Denton, a family friendly dealer, was easy to work with and treated me well.

I've owned a 2011 Soul base with manual transmission, and a 2012 Soul + with manual transmission. Both were purchased as used cars and we loved them. It was REALLY hard to move to an automatic transmission vehicle, but now is a great time to buy a new car and the offer from Kia was too excellent to pass by. Sure, we could have ordered a manual transmission 2020 Soul, but again, the 0% financing deal was too good to pass over. We live in an urban setting. We chose this car, for the 3rd time, because it's size is perfect for the city and our extremely narrow driveway. It can get into most parking spots that your Optima could only dream of. So we test drove the LX and traded in our manual transmission Soul +. It's been about five weeks, and the last three hundred miles were road trip miles. It is quieter than the 2011 and 2012. The suspension is so much softer, it doesn't even feel like the same car. The previous Souls--drove over the tiniest pothole and your teeth rattled in your head blocks later. Now I look for potholes to drive over because I cannot believe it's so much improved! I've never boasted about a vehicle's ability to air condition, but they improved that too. Quieter, softer and yet very efficient. The gas tank is bigger. And somehow, the car's gas efficiency is improved as well. Our previous two cars we were getting 33-36 MPGs on the highway. Last week's road trip, depending on the hills, we got between 38-41 MPGs. Did I mention it's a lot quieter? Kia has come a long way in the last 5-6 years and you are getting excellent value for the cost. But we bought a 3rd version of the car because it's a great little car, not because of the sticker price. That part was gravy! UPDATE: While not specific to the 2020 model, just wanted to say that while we were in upstate NY, we noticed the Kia Soul is a popular car up there. We both were surprised at how well our previous Souls performed in snow with snow tires, and upstate NYers must feel the same. While it hasn't snowed just yet for us to say how the 2020 will perform, given its weight and overall similar sizing--we're expecting it to do just fine in the snow. UPDATE: We’ve had quite a bit of snow dumped on us since December and am happy to report that the car handles well in the snow with snow tires (front only) and with cautious driving. The car is fun to drive and we have no complaints. Except for the fact that the headrests in the back cannot be removed. 😠

I switched from a mini van. Can I say that I am in love?! I love the look, the layout of the instruments, the power to accelerate when needed. I have only had the car for 3 weeks so its all new to me but so happy to have purchased this model. I did a lot of research for the category I was looking for and this is the one that fits my family and had the room I needed for my 6' 3" son. So, so far so good. I will update as time goes on.

As my lease comes to an end on my 2017 Genesis G80, I opted to go with a 2020 Kia Soul GT with Turbo. What a fun car. It has an amazing infotainment system, wonderful sound system and is just fun to drive. It has all the latest safety tech as well. I read a lot of reviews and watched a lot of youtube videos before deciding on the Kia. In addition to being just plain fun, it is comfortable and very practical in terms of hauling stuff. I am 6'2" and it is so easy to get in and out of.

S Trim Is the Way to Go

Hamster Fan, 08/09/2020
2020 Kia Soul S 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl CVT)

The redesigned 2020 or 2021 Soul is a huge improvement over the previous versions But the base-level L trim is poor value for the dollar. For just $1200 more than the L with the optional automatic transmission get the S trim. The S has advanced safety features lacking in the L: forward collision avoidance, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. Is your life worth $1200? The X and GT trims just have cosmetic differences. The turbo model is overpriced and the turbo engine gets poor reviews. For my money the EX trim is an amazing bargain for all the awesome features it adds over the S but you might not want to spend that extra cash. Don't skimp on safety though. Don't worry about the lack of All Wheel Drive. You can put snow tires on if you need them and that improves handling in snow. Remember your trim levels: S for safety, L for less, EX for extra.

I just bought a brand new 2020 Kia Soul GT in Snow White Pearl. It has a red stripe all around the bottom of the car. Love this car! Fun to drive, plenty of technology, comfortable seats, easy to drive and see other drivers. I've outfitted it with studded snow tires for the winter driving I'm going to do--120+ miles every day. The styling of the car really grows on you and it stands out among all those tired, out-of-date cars on the road. It looks like nothing else which is great. All those sedans and SUVs look alike and are boring beside the Soul. I work at a university library and my coworkers are nuts about the car. I've named her Minnie Pearl--because she's pearl white and small. Hope she's as reliable as the 12-year-old Hyundai Elantra (170,000 miles) I traded for her. Only one complaint, after only two weeks of driving the installed front left windshield wiper is making a banging noise. Hyundai/Kia can't make windshield wipers to save their lives. Do I have to replace them already? I've only had the car three weeks. Update: I've had no mechanical problems with the Soul except to check with the dealer for the recall on the piston ring problem that some other 2020 Soul's have experienced. I have almost 35,000 miles on the car. It's easy to drive but I can't recommend the ride with the 18" performance tires--hard enough to jar your bones on uneven roads. It's only comfortable on smooth roads. Another gripe--the auto on/off switch is located in an inconvenient place low on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel. When you first drive the car you have to punch it off or the engine will shut down every time you stop at a light or intersection. Is this another one of the government's fuel-saving requirements? If so, it's a PIA!

I didn't even make it 10,000 miles before my engine went out. I'm meticulous when it comes to oil and upkeep, so there was absolutely no excuse. I owned a Kia Forte before this Soul, and that car's engine went out at 130,000 ... I thought that was bad, but after talking with some people who I know in the business, I decided to give Kia another chance since they were helpful with getting me into a car at a time in my life when I didn't have much money/very little credit to help buy a car. But I will never buy another Kia. The Engine went out at 9,500 miles. It took them almost 2 months to get a new engine into it. I had it for 2 days before I noticed my car was leaking oil. I'm done. I wish I could go back in time and slap myself.

My Sister has a 13 Soul & Loves it however the difference between the 13 & 2020 Are like night & day. The 2.0 with automatic is getting over 30 mpg city and pushes 40 highway. I feel very safe in my Soul...solid build & fantastic quality especially for the price range. Seats are great and so is visibility. I was surprised how well equipped the LX was for the $...just wish it had a CD player but other than that I love the car. I looked at other brands ...no comparision plus the warranty is fantastic. Fit & finish are impressive..I made a wise choice.

We bought our first KIA back in the early 2,000's. A used sportage, teal in color. The wife love the car, but it had a power. In 2015 we bought our 2nd Kia. Optima EX with all the bells and whistles. As retirement is closing in on us. We decided to trade the optima in. Kia was giving us some great incentives. Grand Kia in Colorado was outstanding and General Manager Tim Bottoms is the real deal, caring about his customers personally. We got a 2020 Soul EX and could not be happier. I'm 6 feet 8 inches and do not have any issues getting in or out of the vehicle. Great Little Vehicle. Thank You KIA.

I bought my 2020 Kia Soul LX a month ago, and have had tons of fun driving it. My first trip will be at the end of the month when I travel from Phoenix, Arizona to Santa Clarita, CA, and then from Santa Clarita up into the San Bernardino Mountains for a few days. Looking forward to driving in the comfort that I have found in the car. The seats are very comfortable, the 2.0L engine and the steering wheel radius are very responsive, tight turns are no problem. It is very roomy inside. With the seats down I can pack tons of luggage, groceries, etc. Like having the controls right on the steering wheel, the super large headlights, bluetooth capabilities, and the larger media screen.

Great Car for the 30, when loaded with accessories. All new interior and exterior. The mapping is fabulous, might even give up apple play connection. The "head-up display that allows you to keep your eye on the road but see the mapping, the speed, and the speed limit as well as the centering of the vehicle within the lanes.......all on a transparent screen above the instrument cluster and in front of the windshield, the supervision meter cluster, the power seats for the driver, the automatic dual air controls, the 10" screen, the power sunroof and shade, the heated seats and steering wheel. plus the sporty dual chrome exhausts...I feel like a kid again...exterior pearl white with red-orange trim with black interior piped in red. opted a year later in June of 2020 to order custom red leather seats for the car because I have a Great Dane and hair on the cloth has always been an issue ( It gets all over a passenger or driver and hard to vacuum off the stock seats.)

I have owned a 2020 Kia Soul turbo for just over a year. I was never told that in order to keep many of the features that we sold as part of the model packing for the car are actually a subscription. In order to keep using even basic navigation where you type on the full address and use remote start or remote lock you are required to pay a $300 per year fee. How can you sell these as features of a car and not disclose that you only get your features for a year? I went from loving my car to feeling I got scammed. Shame on you Kia for not being up front and just telling people. What is the point of buying the “fully loaded model” if after a year you just have the basic model.

The Soul is a great car at a great price. We bought this one because our daughter had one for 10 years and no problems. I have the 18 in wheels this adds to a much better ride. Head Room abounds and the Back Seat is very comfortable. More safety features than anyone could hope for especially at the price.

I now have over 6k miles and things are going well. If I keep my foot out of it, I average about 31mpg, when I don't keep off the gas, I get about 26/27mpg. Everything is still like new, I bought some fitted neoprene seat covers from CoverKing in black and red. Goes well with the red stitching and the seat heater still gives off good heat with them on. The car is fun to drive and can get up and move when needed. Only thing that has bothered me so far, is a get a buzzing sound from the left front speaker area at times. Its not consistent and it's hard to find. One thing that will drive me crazy are squeaks and rattles. Once i find out where it's coming from, if it's not fixable and it gets worse, I'll trade the car in, that's how much I hate a rattle or buzzing noise. But, so far its very infrequent.....so far. Other than that, love the ride and tech. The lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control are spot on. The audio is excellent and I found that it will work with my old iPod Nano through a blue tooth adapter on the iPod. I'll update when I'm around 12K and see how it's going.

I bought my 2020 soul lx in June of 2020. It started knocking at 6k miles. It now has 13k on it and kia is stating this is normal. It is the most embarrassing car I've ever bought. The stares I get in parking lots from people looking at a new car with a bottom end knock is terrible. Save your self the hassle and buy anything else but one of these. And to add to it the car has alot of blow by and burns 2.5 quarts or oil every 5k miles. Kia said its okay to burn up to 3 quarts in-between changes. The car only hold 4.25 quarts!! If they would stand behind what they sell they could have a great product. I will never recommend a kia to anyone or buy another. Should have kept my ford escape it had a way better drivetrain and no knocking!

I’ve had the 2020 Kia Soul LX for a little less than a month. In that short time I’ve found it to be an excellent car. It’s been a headache trying to fathom all the new features, but it has performed flawlessly. I live in Northeast Ohio where there are no steep mountains and it is winter as I write this. The mileage I’ve accrued has been mostly in the city, with a little on highways. I think it gets more than 27 miles per gallon city and 33 highway. Visual appearance for me is important. The exterior color, Mars Orange, the black interior and the unique silhouette of the Soul, are a perfect combination. The front seats, which can be adjusted to fit anyone, are the best of any car I’ve owned or ridden in. As other reviewers have noted, it is a small car, but you wouldn’t know it once you are driving. Excellent visibility matched to equally excellent driving position. The rear passenger windows and trunk window are darkened to prevent see-through, another nice touch. Virtually everything is either automatic or available if you want it. Two examples, among numerous others, include setting the temperature at 72 degrees and having a heated steering wheel. Speaking of which, the power steering is assisted electronically, thus giving it almost a feather touch. There is one small flaw and that is the radio pre-sets, at least where I live, are not that great. But, ironically for such a modern car, there is a rotary tuning knob that comes to the rescue. In sum, this car matches fun with beauty, and at a great price too! I sound like a paid spokesman for the company, and I’m not. This is just giving credit where it’s due.

Souls now use the CVT transmission, avoid this

We bought our 2020 soul brand new in November 2019. At exactly 626 miles (of very light easy driving) the transmission suffered catastrophic failure. We waited for another transmission to arrive from Korea and was our of our car for 2 months. When we picked the car up, the dealer assured us it was a fluke, however I learned that this is nothing new. Kia used the same CVT transmission in the 2019 Forte, and suffered nothing but problems. After much research, I have learned that the CVT transmission has destroyed a bunch of major car brands reputation, mostly Nissan amongst others. A CVT transmission is one that lacks the gears of previous types, is supposed to offer better fuel economy but is unfortunately a new untested type for most manufacturers. I am sorry but I can not recommend this car to anyone as long as they use this new type of untested transmission. It was covered under warranty since it’s a brand new car of course, but the total bill was over $3500. Kia did pay for the full repair and apologized, I will give them credit for that. But who wants a car that will need a transmission every so often that requires a second mortgage to pay for. Ludicrous.

Kia Soul - Bad Transmission 37,000 Miles

I bought my Kia Soul about a year ago. I drive a long commute for work so I put about 37,000 miles on it. That’s when the transmission broke...at 37,000 miles. It started slipping so I took it to the dealership. They told me it was the computer and that it just needed an update. Picked up my car from the dealer and took it for a drive and it was still slipping. I started heading home and lost all power to the wheels. I pulled off to the side of the road and the vehicle was stuck in 5th gear...I know, there are no gears in a cvt but this is what was indicated on the display. Anyway, we crawled home and then had the car towed to the dealership. The service manager said it was a bad transmission and they replaced it at no cost. Took about a week. I’m not the only one with this issue. Do your homework. There are dozens of people on the internet with this same issue. Do not buy this make and model. It has a bad transmission.

Great Car - Wait and See Transmission

I purchased the top trim just to get LED headlights and fog lights. Glad I did. My Soul is a box full of tech and super quick once the transmission decides to go. I actually look forward to driving. The infotainment screen is gigantic, stereo system rocks, mood lighting chills and sunroof opens it up. The heads up display is clear and FULL COLOR. lots of bang for the buck. I have only two complaints. The transmission is occasionally a bit hesitant to deliver power and the start/stop is a little too aggressive. For example pulling into the garage and before I can fully stop, the engine cuts out only to snap back to life two seconds later when I put it in park.

I was skeptical at first, but this car has so much room, rides great and has a lot of perks for the price! I like the 18 inch wheels and the fact it feels like I'm driving a small SUV. I traded in a 2013 Kia Soul + which I truly enjoyed driving. The Soul is such a fun car to drive. I traded the 2013 Soul for the new design 2020 Kia Soul Ex. This car is so much more fun to drive..... a wider stance and feels somewhat heavier than the 2013. With all the features you get with the Ex, it is worth the additional cost to upgrade to the Ex. If you are looking for a fun car, buy the new 2020 Soul.

Pros: Comfy seats even on long trips Cons: 1. Impossible to lock car with engine running, even manually. So, if you want to leave the AC on for a pet in the car, you have to leave the car unlocked. 2. At 43,000 miles, things have begun to break. Driver side door lock will not unlock anymore. I have to open the back door and reach to the front to unlock my driver door with my finger. I can lock it with the fob or the power lock button, just not unlock it. Radiator needed to be replaced at 40,009 miles and the driver side wipe simply stopped working at 36,100 miles. I have an uneasy feeling about long-term reliability with this 2020 Soul, since things are beginning to break so early on.

This review is for a 2020 Kia Soul GT-Line Turbo. I have owned (actually leased) the car for 11.5 months and have driven it 5,992 COVID-limited miles. It went in for its first (6,000) mile service yesterday. Yes, the turbo model’s mileage between service is halved from the non-turbo. The great thing is that it takes Regular gas. Anyway, this car also comes with all the bells and whistles offered for the Soul. At least in this model, the cabin is a very nice place to be...well appointed, quality materials, good looks. The car is quiet inside thanks in part to a heavily insulated cover over the motor. If you enjoy engine noise under acceleration, nada. I have not driven a non-turbo Soul so have no comparison, but this car will step out with a rush when called upon, particularly when set to “sport” mode, with its related engine and tranny remapping. Acceleration is effortless and immediate. I thought that I would be using the paddle shifters more since I used them all the time on my three previous Honda Fit leases. But in the Fit the engine really wound up to a shriek - all that motorcycle tech in Honda motors. Now, with 201 hp and no shriek, not so much paddling. Then too, even though the Fit came with an (excellent) CVT, it really snapped off it’s paddle shifts in sport mode....particularly nice on the back road twisties. On the other hand, despite having a dual clutch tranny, the Soul’s paddle shift experience is definitely not snappy; more soggy. if you expect your finger flicking the paddle to elicit NOW! down and upshifts you will be disappointed. It’s not that it’s bad, just by comparison. But in the big picture I could care less. This car was a hit with us from the get-go. Car design is subjective, but the redesigned Soul’s boss front end is part of what sold us. All of the other 2020 design tweaks were well executed. The Turbo’s center twin exhaust gives a performance car vibe that the motor can back up. We needed a car that could at least match the Fit for cargo capacity while retaining a smallish footprint. From that standpoint, in it’s class the Soul has come through...a best use of space available. So, two years to go until the lease is up. Another Soul? Who knows. For now we’re satisfied customers. Soon we’ll hopefully taking long trips more frequently and max out our 36,000 available miles.

To all the people who say the transmission shifts are harsh or odd I say you are not entirely correct. It's all in how you drive it. You basically couldn't get more awesome features like you do in the GT-Line Turbo. The Harmon Kardon stereo is beyond excellent. The safety features are beyond excellent. The styling is standout inside and out. I do find that Kia needs to fix it's ability to offer features that are not necessary in the model you are looking for. For example I have every feature possible but, no vented seats. No dealer even knows if you want to add them hoe it's possible to get them. Make sure you get everything you are offered by the dealer in writing. Also make sure you buy the car in the town you live in because Kia has no power to enforce the dealers to honor their agreements. The power in this car is incredible. 90% of the time when I leave a traffic 🚥 light most cars are half mile behind in seconds without pushing that hard on the gas. If you put a steady pressure on the gas you will get nonstop acceleratuon. I have had many cars try to race 🏎 to get in front of me and most fail including, BMWs, Mercedes, Cameros, etc...(No Exaggeration). I am extremely happy with my Kia Soul GT-Line Turbo and I will drive it until the wheels fall off.

I hesitated between Hyundai Kona and Kia Seoul. Hyundai offered a great price break, but once I saw this Kia in the trim and color I wanted (Solar Yellow), I was smitten. Took it for a test drive and the car felt custom made for me. Very smooth CVT, good acceleration, very comfortable. It is a peppy little car (well, not so little) that is unique and, oh well, super-cute. I only had it for two days, drove 60 miles so far and I have nothing negative to say about this car. Yes, there is a part of me that wishes this car had AWD (the Kona had), but I survived 30 years of Michigan winters, always in FWD cars, without accidents. I am mostly a city driver, so I like that the car's engine shuts down at complete stops, saving fuel. When it starts again (after break release), it is almost imperceptible.

Love my Kia Soul, my last car was a 2013 Kia Soul + that has been passed on to my hubby, she's a good car still going strong. The “Twoster” is my second Soul Turbo, so named because my 2017 was silver and friends christened it the “Toaster” because of its shape. I don’t care that most people dismiss it as just an econobox car. It has tons of power, every conceivable safety and convenience gadget standard (love the subwoofer and heads-up display), has every conceivable electronic device, gets good mileage when I occasionally drive it rationally, and fits tall, fat people like me very comfortably. Yes, it costs a considerable premium over a “standard” Soul, but if there is such a thing as a luxury “econobox” that does 0-60 in six seconds or less, rides and handles rather well, and fits into any parking space on the planet, this is it. I’ve read reviews that say the DCT “hunts” the proper gear at low speeds, but this only happens at about a steady 3mph. If you’re going to drive in a lot of Macy’s Thanksgiving parades, buy a truck and tow a float. Otherwise, if you don’t have nine kids and a huge dog, test drive one of these and you may be surprised.

Comfortable for a Large Man---but one thing stinks

I had a Nissan Murano before this Soul. The Murano had seats that made me go ""ahhhh""" every time I sat in them. While the Soul does not make me say "ahhh", neither does it make me say "owww" after along trip. Nothing hurts after a very ling drive. My back,, neck and knees feel fine which is surprising. I love this vehicle except for one maddening feature; the engine shut-off feature. It is truly awful. Every time I stop at a light, the engine turns off (AC too) and then takes a full second to turn on again, long enough for cars behind me to honk. There is a button to disable the feature, but I have to push it every time I enter the car or it shuts off at lights. It is very annoying. If it were not for this stress-producing feature that detracts from the car's enjoyment, it would be almost perfect. I wish the button were to "enable" the feature and not to "disable" the feature.

We needed a new car although we did not care for a lot of them or they were too expensive. We took a look at a Kia Soul 2020 and even though this car is a 4cylinder don’t let that fool you. This little car has power and room.

I bought my 2020 Soul S from Kia of Des Moines and I Love it! It gets up to 36 mpg on a road trip. It rides real smooth has plenty of passing power and is very comfortable. I never would have purchased the older style for many reasons but this 2020 is great. Kia of Des Moines give me a great deal and treated me really well.

Best Compact Cargo, Warranty, Safety, Leg Room

Needed a car I could easily park in the City. Due to the 10-year warranty I only considered Kia or Hyundai. Equivalent Hyundai is the Kona with much less cargo and rear leg room than the Kia Soul. In fact, research showed no better car under $25k and under 172 inches long for cargo room (24/62 cf), warranty (5/10 years), safety (get the S or EX trim for the best safety features) and passenger room (especially leg room for rear passengers). Visibility is excellent. My 6-foot son has plenty of leg room in the back seat. The suite of safety features is excellent in the S and higher trims so unless you only drive stick avoid the base-level L model. The EX was hard to find but glad I did. The dual-zone automatic a/c and keyless start alone are well worth the extra $1500. Love the styling on the 3rd-generation 2020 model. Older Souls look cartoonish compared to the sleek lines of 2020 Soul. The only difference between 2020 and 2021 is rear seat occupant alert and start button on the remote. Not worth the extra $1500 so get the 2020 model while you can and save some $$. The Soul is an amazing value for the money. Love how it looks, drives and keeps my family safe.

Remarkably quiet and silky 4 cylinder engine. Smooth vibration free ride on good roads although fairly choppy on rough secondary roads. Comfortable seats. Straightforward controls so none of the electronic fustration of many modern cars. I'm usually a pretty critical reviewer, but I can't think of much to criticize in regards to this fun to drive and nimble car.

3rd kia soul, and the worst

I have owned three Kia souls, and the 2020 is the worst i have seen yet. the cruise control is worse than every other car i have driven. The auto start stop feature can not be permanently disabled so every time I start it i have to turn it off. Most of the time i forget to turn it off, and it stops when i do not want it to. The lane assist operates the same way, you can not turn it off permanently. The lane assist is disabled at below 40MPH. I do not understand why they would disable it. I want it to be on at least down to 25MPH. The radio volume turns down when backing up. I guess a safety feature? I find it annoying. The headlight is another bad area. When I push the lever to turn on high beams it has a tendency to turn off the headlights very dangerouse when you need more light and it turns off. Another annoying safety feature is when the hatch is open in the back it warms you with an anoying tone that does not stop. I had to drive home with a board sticking out the back and listen to it for about 30 minutes. There are so many things that are irritating with this car I would never buy one again. Keep in mind I am not a Kia Soul hater, I have owned two others, and would highly recommend them, and did. I would never recommend the 2020.

my first kia, and i mostly liked. has great safety features , and the lane keep assist is awesome. like the high end seating position and practicality . the gas mileage is acceptable for the size. the think that i don’t like is the engine off to stop button, but know is muscle memory i turn off when i turn the car.

Drive it and you will love it. I upgraded from my favorite a 2015 Soul Plus. I trust it to do what I need and the newer technology is a blessing. Road trip here I come.

Bought mine April 2019 ,gas pedal sticks quiet a bit in September 2019 the gas pedal got stuck and I ran through my house...reported it to corporate they said I couldn't prove it got stuck and they couldn't prove that it did. Couldn't find an attorney to take the case...here it is February 2020 and the car cuts out , tries to go dead ,check engine comes off and on but Kia says if they cant reproduce the issue then the issue doesnt exist....I will not make another pmt on it letting it go back and no one will trade it in due to the diminished value from crashing through the house
