Great when it was new. Then...
Been a BMW fan for 42-years. 2011 Jaguar XJL Portfolio was a great car.... when new. Fun to drive. Beautiful interior and amenities. Fast. Handled well. Styling is a head turner and fantastic on the highway - especially at 80+mph. Then, ye olde Jaguar myths of olde started to manifest - even after the complete TaTa retool. First to go was the automated moonroof cover. Came off the tracks - $800 to repair. Next the radio, nav, and AC control unit went out - $2400. Alternator failure stranded us in the middle of Texas - $900. Oil pan started to leak - $800. And finally, when the front main seal started leaking(all before 40k miles - it was time to go back to a BMW. I did buy a 1991 XJS v-12 convertible as well and - while not without its idiosyncrasies - has provided a lot of enjoyment and you can still work on them yourself. Overall, if you have a lot of money and a daily driver - a Jag can be a wonderful second car to own.
The big cat of modern motoring
I have a propensity of hating big cars. Therefore, with some reservation, I leased a XJ super charge last week after the lease expiration of XF Supercharge. (This is my forth Jaguar vehicle). The car is a wonder, it dissipates my dislike for big cars as it actually feels agile and precise in handling (you dont feel the car is big when driving). The power is beyond any description and more than adequate at all levels. My car is in ultimate black with London tan as interior. Just a week, the car has totally won my admiration as well as a lot of compliments from pedestrians at stoplights and strangers at car washing place. This is cat befitting the image of Jaguar, elegance, power and luxury.

This is my third XJ over 28 years
The 83 XJ6 was stately and stable, the 98 XJ8 had elegance with performance. This 2011 XJ, with the interior upgrade package, has all of the above attributes on steroids. Steering is very quick and precise. Acceleration and braking are awesome. Jaguar now has a car with all the bells and whistles expected at this price point, along with the beautiful styling and brilliant performance expected of Jaguars. This is a world class car.
Service Nightmare
I've had my XJL SC 16 weeks. 2 weeks after taking delivery, it was in the shop to have multiple rattles and pops repaired. 3 weeks later, I got it back, free of pops and rattles. Yesterday, I got in the car and the audio system was only putting out sound on the passenger side. Hoped it was a fluke, but no, same problem this AM. And these aren't the only issues- Edmunds only gives me so much space I cannot deny that this car is compelling to drive. On the days that everything works, it is a true pleasure. The build quality and reliability are abysmal though.
Rock Star
I must say Jaguar was not on my list of cars to consider. On the insistence of a friend, I begrudgingly agreed to take a quick look. My God is this the purist, most advanced car on the market today! I bought one the next day as I just wanted to review my thoughts. This car is the grandest and liveliest full size sedan the world has yet seen. I drove the Panamera and was almost angry when done. The 750 LI was a heavy driving complicated mess of a design gone wrong (and this car was 1st on my 'list'). I tried so hard to like it. I did not. The Jaguar was breathtaking in both form and function. Everywhere I go, it turns heads. A saw a lady walk into a light pole the other day ogling the car.
Had to have it!
We had been looking to replace my wife's 2005 Infiniti Q-45 which was coming off lease. We looked at the MB S-550 and the BMW 7 series. Because of the pricing of both, I really thought we would wind up with a used 550 or 7 series. That was until I saw the Jag XJL. For basically the same price as a 1-2 yr. old MB or 7 series, we wound up with a fabulous car that looks great, performs unbelievably and is way ahead in all aspects when compared to the competitors.
Thrilled
What a car! I've been a Jaguar fan most of my life having owned 7 over 45 years. I've also owned a BMW & MB. The first time I saw this new Jag was while passing it on an interstate, and I had the immediate reaction of missing the old XJ look. Then I started looking at photos and reading about it. My old XJL has over 212,000 miles on it so started driving & comparing several new luxury sedans. I saved the Jag for last. The beauty & performance of the car were stunning! After a week of testing the speed & cornering limits (mine, not the cars'), I've settled down to enjoying its stately side around town, like a grandmother should. I love the car!
Closest Yet
The 2011 XJ rightfully takes its place as the finest car in the class. Without question, the XJ oozes elegance and sophistication with a warmth and personality not found in its Teutonic rivals. This is the first true 21st century luxury car. Prrr.
Love this car
I just wanted to echo the sentiments of all the other reviews I have read about this car, it's simply the most incredible machine on the road. I have owned flagship German cars and I promise you, if you drive this car you will be hard pressed to purchase an S class, 7 series, or an A8. The supercharged version is brutally quick. The interior of this car shames all of its German competitors. I have always been a fan of Jaguar but for reliability reasons was never comfortable enough to buy one, until now. This car is a game changer for Jaguar.
One of a kind
I leased this car because I found that there is not a car on the road like this. I'm coming out of a xk. All you see on the road is BMW 7 MB 550 and they really don't stand out, this car is an animal, fast, quiet, handles great. Luxury and state of the art. Simple solution: go see it and drive one
