Overview

When a new Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco isn't your style, but a vintage Land Rover or Toyota Land Cruiser is too much work, there's the 2026 Ineos Grenadier. The rugged off-roader from a new English automaker costs plenty and lacks many comforts you'd expect for the price. But its retro charm and robust build — two solid axles, ladder frame, spartan interior — give it a foundation for serious adventure. Ineos doesn't have a proven record of durability like its rivals, so buying a Grenadier requires some faith. The impressive pedigree of its components should help ease some anxiety, though, both at purchase and on the trail.
Edmunds spotlight: The sum of its parts
We don't blame skeptics for a muted reaction to the Grenadier. It's one thing to enter the growing market of electric vehicles, quite another to pierce the hardened world of off-roading. But with the rise of off-road exploring and "overlanding," the Grenadier has impeccable timing. The new SUV is a veritable United Nations of proven suppliers, including its BMW six-cylinder engine and ZF transmission, the latter found in everything from Ram pickups to Audi and BMW coupes. The two-speed transfer case comes from Tremec, an American manufacturer of heavy-duty and high-performance gearing, while Italian company Carraro supplies the solid axles. Everything is eventually bolted together in France. Experienced off-roaders may not be sold yet, but the Grenadier's moving parts are a good start.
Competitors to consider
Part of the Grenadier's charm is its old-school style, minimalist interior and trail-ready credentials. Whether those merit luxury pricing starting north of $70,000 is debatable, and for the money, there are more battle-tested options such as the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail and Toyota 4Runner. The Land Rover Defender 110 has similar retro charm and off-road ability with a dash more comfort and luxury. If you just want a tough and durable trail-ready SUV, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and Ford Bronco are more budget-friendly options.
Edmunds Expert Rating

Performance
Handling is not good. There isn't much grip (0.61 lateral g) and the stability control intrudes frequently. The Grenadier's steering has a big dead spot at the top where you can turn the wheel and nothing will happen. Then when you do get the SUV turned, there are times it won't unwind the wheel and it makes the steering feel unpredictable.
Things improve off-road, where the Grenadier's copious ground clearance (10.5 inches) and good approach and departure angles make it easy to get over many obstacles. Our test vehicle also had locking front and rear differentials that helped provide better traction on a pockmarked hill climb. Still, there's room for improvement. The powertrain can be a bit jumpy while in 4-Lo and upshift too quickly while driving at high speeds on sand.
Comfort
Interior
The Grenadier's touchscreen is mounted high on the dashboard because it has to do double duty as the speedometer, but it remains easy to reach from the driver's seat. There is a panel of warning lights in front of the driver, but it's a mess, and if there are a bunch of lights on, it becomes hard to decipher quickly.
When driving off-road, the commanding seating position is a huge help. You can see all the way down to the corners at the front of the hood with ease, and there are large glass windows all around. We do wish the side mirrors were larger or shaped differently because there are pretty big blind spots on both sides.
Technology
Driver aids are sparse; there's no adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, blind-spot warning system or surround-view cameras on offer. You do get regular cruise control, a rear parking sensor and a lane departure warning system, but that system gets confused quite often by any kind of line on the road, even a road seam. The most annoying safety system, though, is the speed warning. It will chime at you every time you go over the speed limit, and it must be turned off every time you get into the vehicle. It's a required feature in Europe that for some reason has been left on in the land of the free (from being bothered about speeding).
Storage
What the Grenadier lacks is storage for small items. Outside of the glovebox or the smaller center console storage bin, there is no covered storage in the vehicle. The tiny space in front of the shifter isn't sunk, so items you put there will fly around the cabin while you drive around corners. Your phone needs to go in one of the cupholders, unless you have drinks in there, in which case it's going back in your pocket or purse.
Fuel Economy
Value
Ineos offers a competitive warranty with both basic and powertrain coverage at five years/60,000 miles. At the time of publishing, neither roadside assistance nor free maintenance coverage was offered.

2026 INEOS Grenadier trim level differences
The 2026 Ineos Grenadier is available in three models: base, Trialmaster and Fieldmaster. Each is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder producing 282 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission, full-time four-wheel drive with low-range gearing, and a locking center differential are standard on all trims. Keep reading for more of the key features you get with each trim level.
Which Grenadier trim does Edmunds recommend?
If you simply like the Grenadier's style as an alternative to a Mercedes-Benz G-wagen, for example, stick to the well-equipped base trim. Otherwise, we'll assume you have more than a passing interest in the Grenadier's off-road chops and we recommend the Trialmaster Edition. Extra hardware gives it more ability in rough terrain, including locking front and rear differentials, an air intake snorkel for the rivers you'll be fording, and a roof ladder for a better view of all the Serengeti plains animals you'll encounter.
