My 2nd Genesis - Didn’t Disappoint

After being totally impressed, I traded in my aging 3.8 Genesis sedan for a new G70 2.0T. Understanding the two cars are quite different, the G70 has delivered an experience above my fairly high expectations. The ride is sporty and nimble without being harsh. The 2.0 engine does the job, especially when the tranny is in sport mode. I still get a nice grin when putting the car through it’s paces. For me, the car is just the right size. Me, my wife and three children all can enjoy the car without being super cramped. However, it is more comfortable with four passengers. I have the base model but the tech and safety features are on par for the class and check all the major boxes for what I was looking for. Overall, I couldn’t be happier with the purchase and could recommend the G70 to anyone considering a sports sedan in this price range.

You’re buying a very expensive Hyundai

I am breaking this review down in two parts; car and dealership experience. The car is great, appears solid and competes with Lexus, BMW, Audi, etc. biggest complaint is the Infotainment system is directly from an everyday Hyundai. Not a bad thing in a 20k car, but not a great thing in a 50k car. Genesis is trying super hard to be a stand alone brand like Lexus is to Toyota. They’ll never achieve that while selling and servicing through Hyundai dealers. Worst buying experiences of my life which has left a really bad taste in my mouth for what otherwise should be a great car. Buying a premium brand and premium car should come with a premium dealership experience. Look elsewhere if you want all three. Update: I traded in as couldn’t handle Genesis Consumer Affairs…the dealers totally wear the pants. I’ve tried working with 5 different Hyundai dealers. You want to make an appointment or get a call back, suggest you just drop in and do in person. Don’t let the selling dealer sell you on loaner cars either. Those are like finding gold in a silver mine. Nice car, but you’re taking a complete gamble should you need manufacturer support, warranty work or service.

Vehicle itself is Beyond Expectations until 25000

Flawless vehicle. Unbelievable ride and quality finish. Don’t buy this car based on its price. It’s barely $3500 less than similarly equipped Audi A4. Absolutely no complaints. It exceeds my expectations of what a sport sedan should be in every way. The only downside is that you will be buying this car from a Hyundai dealership. So, expect the salesman to treat you as if you are buying a $15,000 accent with poor credit. If you can get over that, then you’ll be very satisfied with the car itself. 8/2022 Update: Again, great car, but the service department at Hyundai refuses to look into a problem with alignment. I had them fix it twice and paid for it, but the alignment was still the same. They told me on the third try that I should replace The tires before they try again. Instead, I went to a private mechanic in Roswell Georgia called five brothers, and they fixed the alignment to perfection in about half an hour. Until Genesis gets its own dealerships and service departments, I do not recommend buying this car. 11/4/22 Update: Engine misfiring at 25,000 miles - the engine started shaking at idle and power would get cut off to the engine. By 27,000 miles, this became a common occurrence. Yes, the car is still under warranty but you need the time to take it to the dealership and then hope that they will actually fix the problem. I lost faith that a car this new could have engine problems. I traded it in for a 22 Camry V6. After owning between 12 to 15 different cars, this is the first time I have ever had an engine failure, let alone at such low mileage.

Not what you’d expect from a “luxury” brand

Serra, 03/14/2020

I bought a brand new 2020 Genesis G70, and it kept making a loud clunking noise from what appeared to be coming from the front passenger side tire when making left turns, the driver side window made an awful clicking sound whenever it went up/down (as if there was too much pressure against the glass), the plastic part right next to the driver side window on the outside of the car would pop in and out when closing the driver side door, and the audio would randomly turn on when driving on bumpy roads. When I turned the music off, then the radio would automatically turn on. The first Blue Hands center (a Hyundai certified service center) I went to said nothing was wrong with the car when I brought up the clunking noise. So, I took it to another Blue Hands center, and the technician there said something must be on the road to cause the car to make that noise, which was utter bullshit. Since he didn’t exactly know what the cause was, he told me to go to Hyundai Service Center. A technician at Hyundai Service Center also claimed nothing was wrong and gave me yet another bullshit explanation saying that Genesis cars are rear-wheel drive cars, so they’re susceptible to making that clunking noise when driving through a crosswalk. I said, “Okay. Then, let me drive another G70 and see if that car also makes a similar sound.” They brought another G70 for me to test drive, and, low and behold, that G70 didn’t make any noise whatsoever. After driving the car for 3 months, a guy from the high tech division finally discovered what was wrong with the car - defected engine mounts. I drove my car every day for 3 months with that loud clunking noise. What frustrates me even more is the fact that everyone at Hyundai (Blue Hands, Hyundai Service Center) kept insisting nothing was wrong with the car. If nothing was wrong with it, then why the hell would it keep making that clunking noise??? I’m sure driving the car around with bad engine mounts for 3 months wasn’t good for the car - who knows what other damages it caused. I paid full price for a brand new car I thought I can trust. After having all these issues, I can no longer trust my car and don’t even want it anymore. If I was going to get a defected car like this, I would’ve just bought a used car instead. It sure would’ve saved me a lot more money. When people buy new cars, they want to feel like they can trust the car because it’s brand new. I’ve had to fix several things on my car already, and it’s only been 3 months! Update: After they made some adjustments to the driver side window, it no longer makes the weird noise as if there was too much pressure against the glass, but now the window rattles from side to side when driving on bumpy roads.

Overall performance great but when it's comes to the bronze and chrome finishes, Genesis did a poor job. My entire front end of is a hot mess after 6 months of ownership. The dealership will not replace the defects chrome on the windows nor the defects bronze on grill. I'm very disappointed.
