I recently bought an Encore. I thought I was getting the higher performance engine but was mislead. I can state that the regular engine has well suited my needs (and I don’t have to put up with the auto stop feature of the optional engine). It is what it is...a small and tight ride. It’s perfect for my needs and excels in comfort, ride, and quietness. I’m totally impressed and content with my purchase. I get great gas mileage and if I need extra power to pass someone I use the sport shift and down shift from 6th to 4th gear and roar past them. No problem. I also have to carry around my musical gear and can easily do so in this car. I see why this one is Buick’s best seller. The build quality, interior quality and nimble handling make this a winner. Plenty of headroom is available yet the Encore doesn’t feel too top heavy when pushing around a corner. Nicely engineered.

Many issues very expensive to repair

I bought my new 2018 Buick Encore in 2019. I primarily bought it because I would be having a lengthy 3.5 hr commute through a mountainous area and wanted 4wd or awd for the mountain passes. The vehicle was had some minor issues the first 8 months or so, weird electric stuff, at one point the whole driving center going black (no speedometer) then an hour or 2 later coming on. it still has these weird electric glitch every now and again. The BIG problems started not long after it stopped at a light or in traffic or idling the car developed a shake, it would require more gas to keep it running then would just stall, it was also severely underpowered. The Purge Emission Valve was recalled, despite part of the recall being the check engine light being on and part of the recall the dealer charged me $129. for the check engine light which after they repaired it the check engine light was still ON. they told me it needed a valve cover. So a few weeks after the purge valve, the car started doing the same thing, the rocking, stalling, underpowered, etc. Despite many attempts it was super difficult to get it into the dealer, and it started leaking coolant so I brought it to a local mechanic who kept it for a couple months while I'm renting a car (I am not rich so this was a huge burden) eventually I pulled it from there and brought it to the dealer who informed me the turbo was bad and all gummed up, they also told me the prior mechanic had disconnected the exhaust and never reconnected it. its fixed I pick it up it runs ok for a month then the same problem happens again but more severly underpowered, cant get it into the dealer for months bring it in and am told it is the transmission and the exhaust pipe is completely rusted through (shouldn't they have noticed they reconnected it. I couldn't get it into the dealer so one day I just decided to dump it in their lot, told them to call me when they fixed it. So they call me supposedly car is fixed-leaving the dealer the car is running rouge check engine light is on. I immediately bring it to an inspection station to have them tell me the car has a massive puddle of coolant under it and is now showing codes for catalytic converter, etc. I had asked the dealer to inspect it for me but they're reply was "it wouldn't pass" So they knew it wasn't fixed. I was told to drive it 200 miles to clear the codes gone well over that codes are still on. In the past year this car has cost me over $15,000 in repairs and rental cars. Its placed a huge burden on me but I can live in the car, I can't drive a house so choices made, ya know. Anyway the Encore is a quiet car (I love that), the interior is comfortable and well designed everything is reachable. The seats are super comfortable. storage is limited- no big loads in this car. What I don't like: theres no gas cap, and the gas entry door is not locking so anyone can access your gas tank, the keyless entry is convenient but beware if you're sitting in the car even with the doors locked anyone can walk up and press the button and gain entry (I discovered this at night when someone was able to open my door-scary), the wheels supposedly can only be continental brand because there is some sort of something (its in the owners manual) and not every place carries continental so they have to be ordered. The space between the front seats it super narrow so if you drop your phone you'll have to fight to get it out (its the worst of any car I've driven). the engine, way too many repairs for me the Purge valve, turbo, and transmission all within a year. Just a badly designed engine. * of note* the turbo was just recalled but they limited it to 120,000 miles or less-my car had 131,000 at time of repair but when issues started it was probably at 110,000. I've argued with GM they will not reimburse me for the repairs although they did, in adding insult to injury give me gm points like wtf do you even do with those? I've owned 2 other Buicks both had bad trannys. I would avoid the Encore.
