Lemon
Got a 2020 X3 xdrive 30i earlier this year, but this car gave us nothing but problems since the first day. Had issues with misaligned lights, brakes, iDrive, excessive vibration, tailgate randomly opening...the list goes on. BMW said "we stand by our products" but refused to do anything about it. Will have to pursue a lemon law claim.

very uneasy about this purchase!!
Purchased a brand new 2020 BMW X3 xdrive30i on 12/31/2019. Before we left the dealership on the day of purchase, "low coolant warning" light appeared. the car was taken to the service department and topped off with coolant and told everything was ok. on 1/1/2020 got another low coolant warning in the car. Did not drive the car at all 1/2/2020 due to this issue and was not able to bring it in for service until 1/3/2020. ( because I live 3 hours away from a BMW dealership) on 1/3/2020 the car was brought back to the dealership for service, was told coolant system was ok. As of 1/7/2020, was told the heat exchanger was the problem and the new parts had to come from Germany so it would take 2 weeks to get the parts, then get the car fixed. Have never owned a BMW, thought they were reliable and am very disappointed, I purchased this car and had it for 72 hours and it is still in the shop as of 1/10/2020. I was so excited for this car, I loved it when I drove it. It handled well, is cute and sporty, however, this experience has ruined my excitement for this car and am afraid I got a lemon. My Mercedes was totaled in a car accident, I have always wanted a BMW and made the switch, but am now regretting my decision.

Do I have to give my 2020 BMW X3 any stars?
I really want to love this car but I can’t. I loved my test drive of the 2020 BMW X3. Loved the styling, the driveability, the roomy interior that I fell into the trap of buying one. I couldn’t agree more with the reviewer who said there are tech issues with this car. The Apple CarPlay is incompatible with my iPhone 11 (it works with Apple X or earlier). BMW calls this an idrive issue. My media turns off after playing a few bars of a song, my map freezes and locks up. These problems occur even when I use a cord connection to my phone (and the car is marketed as having wireless capability). The camera display turns on when I’m driving for no apparent reason. BMW claims it’s a problem with my phone and takes zero responsibility for the myriad of software issues with this car. Save yourself the trouble and buy something else. First and last BMW I’ll ever buy. Customer service at BMW dealer and through corporate is horrible. I suspect this is a systematic software problem and they are not acknowledging it. After experiencing all of these issues I googled the problem and it seems others are experiencing the same.

Severe Electrical Issues
To date the car has been brought in to the dealership 4 times in less than 1yr of having the car. Every time for electrical issues. Some scary, some not. The car has had a lot of issues and required updates each time we brought the car in (according to the dealership) however different electrical problems keep happening. They range from the car turning itself off while waiting at a red light, the alarm that the car was being stolen going off -while driving, the entire display instrument panel blacking out - while driving on the highway at 65mph, the car sunroof closing on its own - while the car was in motion, Cell phones repeatedly not syncing or being “recognized” this is especially terrible if you use Waze to Navigate as I do, the car randomly changing seat positions when not prompted, the seatbelt alarm indicator randomly going off, I could go on but I think you get the picture. Leasee/buyer beware. Would lastly add that this car has the heads up display and few other upgrade options so bringing it in to the dealership for yet another electrical issue and the dealership giving me an entry level loaner for the days the car is being repaired - the shortest was 3 days- yet here I am paying for a premium car that is malfunctioning through no fault of mine- So why am I paying that same premium $$ for an entry level loaner car?!??!? Again this has all been in less than a year of leasing this car. We have previously leased Mercedes (4x) And a Volvo (1x), this is our first and last BMW. Truly Awful….

Fourth BMW first time disappointment
This is my third BMW X3. The last model was a 2017. The 2020 X3 has been a huge disappointment. Anytime you hit a bump the entire cabin rattles and it sounds as though something is going to fall apart-it takes bumps, potholes, and any variance and roadway extremely rough-speed bumps in my neighborhood at lowest speed Are reminiscent of sitting in the back seat of a school bus as a kid. The car is noisy, with a lot of rattling and miscellaneous road noise of which we cannot identify the origin. My steering wheel does not heat up near as efficiently or as comfortably as my last. I’ve owned the car for two months and it has visited the shop twice. Big regret… But the X2 loaner I was given is solid and amazing, it has that familiar BMW quality. Wish I would’ve gone with that one this time around..
2020 BMW X3M40i - The best X3 of them all!
The BMW X3M40i is a great combination of straight-line performance, handling, size, practicality, maneuverability, ride, and fuel efficiency. It has enough power to be fun to drive. The ride is a little firm (stay with the 19-inch wheels), but not punishing, like the X3M Competition. It's rated 27 mpg highway, but I'm averaging over 30 highway. Love it!

Great compact crossover
Recently purchased my new 2020 BMW X3, and I'm so happy I did! Coming from a Lexus NX, I was impressed with the performance, comfort, and technology packed into this car. I cross shopped the previous generation X3 when I got my last lease, but this generation is night and day better in terms of driving dynamics and pushed me to make the switch. It feels almost like I'm driving a 3 series sedan with how great it handles, and the power from the base engine is surprisingly quick and smooth. I was initially leery of switching from a Lexus to a BMW given some of the reviews about build quality and reliability, but I was pleasantly surprised that I have had no issues so far.

Bad performance, terrible tech, unreliable.
I have been leasing this year for about 15 months. So far the car has completely broken down twice, both times unexpectedly, while moving in traffic. Both times the car completely locked down and had to be towed. Beyond those traumatic experiences, the car has a myriad of other minor issues. The car lacks responsiveness from a dead stop—you depress the gas pedal and it will be several seconds before the car gets going. The tech in the car is clunky—pairing issues with the phone, randomly the screen will display a video feed from the front or back camera (while driving normally). If driving in winter weather, the outside sensors will get frozen over and anytime the car goes below 15mph the impact sensors will go off. A few times I have discovered the car with all the windows down and sunroof open (it’s a feature you can discover by mistake if you keep your keys in your pocket). BMW’s fix for this was to tell me not to put my keys in my pocket. I could go but I’m not one for kicking a donkey when it’s down.

I love my 2020 BMW X3 M40i!
I love my 2020 BMW X3 M40i! WOW! I was amazed in all the changes that were made in 2 years from my 2018 model. The turbocharged six-cylinder engine went from 382 HP to 355 horsepower, the suspension upgrades, the larger steering wheel was again in the 2020. For some reason it was not in the 2018. The pickup, the starting & stopping, the smoother transition in the changing of gears; all made this the car I wanted. The car already had the standard driver assistance features to include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, driver drowsiness monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and traffic sign recognition. I added the additional safety features to include a head-up display, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, front and rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, parallel park assist, and a surround-view parking camera system. To me it was worth the additional cost. The changes in the infotainment system, the touch screen display is larger, the Apple Carplay, the wireless charging. I paid extra for the Adaptive M Suspension. I live in West Virginia & the curvy mountainous road here make that a needed feature. I had it in my 2018 and loved it. What a change in the M40I in 2 years. I traded in a 2018 M40i with less than 17,000 miles on it. That car had issues almost from the day I picked it up at the factory.

Run, do not walk from BMW's new X3 hybrid!
DO NOT BUY THIS VEHICLE! I bought a 2020 BMW X3 30e because I wanted a good-looking hybrid and liked my previous conventional X3. With less than 1,000 miles on the new vehicle, they have slapped a high voltage battery recall on the model. So, I can't charge the vehicle and there is no estimated timeline for a fix! And I'm driving around in a car that is now prone to a battery fire, not to mention expensive to maintain and an environmental hazard! This is what happens when a company gets fat on their reputation and rushes out a flawed product with poor safety protocols. Bye-bye BMW. Never again.

Edmunds Horsepower number is incorrect!
The 2020 X3 M40 has increased horsepower from 355 to 382. The torque remains the same at 369. This is an amazing SAV. This is the best bang for your buck on any BMW.

More problems than with my old ford
Bought new one a year ago, I have 40k km at the moment. Today my rear camera stop working, last month my ambient lights stop working, 6 month ago engine failure light started blinking (some sonda failure). Beside that there is some squeaking noise from dash board, like on my old ford. Plus ot is stiff as hell on 20 inch stock wheels and tires. Definitely my last BMW

Powerful and Beautiful
This article is slightly wrong. The 2020 M40i has an upgraded B58 engine that packs 382HP compared to 355 in the 2018-2019 models. It is noticeably faster and pulls a lot harder. It also has some of the over engineered crackles and pops replaced with more natural sounding and more subtle burbles and less “look at me” feel.

2020 X3M40i Review - The Best X3 You Can Buy!
The X3M40i is the best combination of snappy performance, handling, price, ride, and fuel economy! It has it all! I got mine with the 19 inch wheels, and the ride is somewhat firm, but not excessively so. Stay away from the bigger wheels which have stiffer sidewalls, which result in a firmer ride. It's rated 27 mpg highway, I'm averaging 30+ mpg highway!

Very happy with X3
Leased 2020 X3 at the time they gave deep discounts. Had it for over 2 years with over 20K miles. Not a single thing went wrong with the car. It looks nice, descent fuel economy and love the turbo. Only thing I did not give full 5 stars is Android Auto. But with XM radio and a built in navigation system, not a deal breaker. BTW, BMW's navigation system is the easiest system to use. After the lease, we are planning to buy.

Great SAV
Love almost everything about this vehicle -I’m a little disappointed with the dash that lists mph, outside temperature, etc.-the size of the numbers, etc are small would have loved if they were larger.
2020 BMW X3 M40i
Great performance, great utility, nice interior and 100% reliability. After 3.5 years of ownership I am very happy with the vehicle which has had no mechanical issues except for some paint peeling on the exhaust tip so both were replaced under warranty. Also impressive is the overall fuel economy for an SUV with great performance. The dealership experience has improved the last couple of visits. Also, the iDrive 7 system as well as the My BMW app do not have the option to check for OTA updates but the BMW website that allows you to check for software updates indicates these will be done OTA. BMW customer service was not much help in explaining the discrepancy. The run flat oem tires wear quickly and I replaced them last fall with Pilot Sport 4s’s. I ordered ventilated seats that deletes the ability to adjust the side bolsters. I find the seats do not have the kind of bolstering you’d expect given the performance of the vehicle. Another slight annoyance is that you can only open the lift gate with the key fob. The paint has held up extremely well although I do have PPF on the hood, bumper and front fenders.

X3 30e 6 month review, so far no recall
Pros: my VIN number did not hit a NTSB recall for the battery issue (Phew!) so the review is not tainted by the emotions and experience of others on this site. After 8,000 miles it has been solidly reliable and the tech has worked well, for the most part Charging the car every night and in the afternoon prior to commuting home means most of my day-to-day driving is electric. The Hybrid system eliminates any range anxiety for long trips It is quiet and serene; handles well and is very fun to drive. The Harman Kardon stereo is well worth the upgrade (though I certainly wish it was included given the base price). The Adaptive Hybrid mode is quite clever - when you put a destination in the navi the software decides where best to deploy the battery, or will route you for the most efficient drive Overall efficiency is excellent. I typically get 35+ mpg when driving 150 miles of rural roads and highway; often closer to 40 mpg. Cons: Electric range is too low, it is roughly 15 miles when driven mostly on the highway, 20 miles if driven around town. The range has declined about 20% now that the temperatures are in the 20 and 30 degree range, necessitating a route with less highway driving to make my commute on all-electric. Charging at the office is a must if I want my return trip to be battery powered as well. The phone connection can be a bit fussy. While the wireless Apple Car Play connection is terrific, it will sometimes drop the connection and take a while to reconnect and has required the phone to be re-paired once or twice. BMW options sheet means that you pay for options, like leather and an upgraded stereo that are included on many less expensive vehicles. Verdict: Highly satisfied so far and look forward to driving it. It makes my commute peaceful and longer trips a blast.

Great Mid-Size SUV and Fun to Drive!
Great SUV! I went from a Jeep Grand Cherokee to the BMW X3 and there is no comparison. The X3 is a great looking SUV with a smooth and quiet ride. It has great acceleration and breaking. The XE is very comfortable and has excellent handling on the road. I love all the safety features like lane departure and the blind spot notification. The screen has all the information I need to start my day from the weather to the newspaper and is easy to use. I would highly recommend the X3!

Huge disappointment
First time BMW owner and I am very disappointed. Any high wind and this car is blowing all over the highway, plus the wind noise is very loud in the cabin. The ride is also very jerky, the gear shifts are not smooth at all. It's pretty rough over bumps as well. I sold my 7 year old rusty Nissan, which actually drove better than this BMW. My SIL has the same car as me and she loves hers, so maybe I got a dud. My first and last time buying a BMW.

X3 M40i is a Blast!
I have owned a half dozen sport utes and crossovers over the years. It is an amazing combination of great styling, good ride characteristics, excellent handling, powerful performance, and excellent fuel mileage. The torque of the turbocharged 3.0 liter 6 cylinder engine is addictive! I specified the 19 inch tires and wheels on mine, for a more compliant ride. I love this vehicle, and highly recommend it. I hate this car
It is not a 3 series... it's a truck. Compared to my 2017 330 wagon... well... you can't. The throttle response is seriously uneven and there is epic turbo lag. It's a very pleasant place for me to sit and reminisce over the beating I took at McKenna South Bay BMW... horrific experience that anyone should avoid. I suspect a good part of my dislike for the car has to do with the buying experience but this will likely be my last BMW. The electronics of my last two BMWs were perfect; this one is far from it. The parking sensors and Automatic Emergency Braking go nuts; the former is downright dangerous as it slams on the brakes for invisible cars.

6 months with my X3
Came from a 2011 X3 3.5. The 2020 3.0 gets amazing gas mileage 32-34mpg on Freeway) and the cockpit integration is first class. Lots of options to customize information specific to different drivers. I really enjoy driving this car. One disappointment is the OE tires which apparently are at the end of their life at 22,000 miles of mostly freeway driving.

It’s no Subaru Outback
I had one of these for about a week as a loaner. Can’t say I loved it. After 20+ years driving BMWs my bar is high. And BMW has mostly lost its way. I think they have more SKUs than Walmart now. 1s, 2s,4s Xs,etc. One as milquetoast as the next. The X3 is a hideous thing to look at. I felt my inspiration being sucked out of me seeing it sitting in the parking spot usually reserved for my immaculate 530xi sport wagon. But it’s a BMW and I’m fair so I’ll say this: Pros: BMW engine. The 2.0 turbo is very smooth and very strong and very quiet. Brakes are big and responsive. The ride is smooth and it feels nimble despite feeling big. Seats are comfy and the panorama roof is amazing. Backseats are big and comfy too. And the backup camera is surprisingly good. Heads up display is sharp too. Cons: To me the steering and the interior are almost inexcusable. The steering is totally fake feeling with none of the feedback or experience BMW is known for. Likewise the interior features a few pieces of wood veneer surrounded by rough ugly plastic. The seats while comfy, look cheesy. What passes for ‘leather’ is very vinyl and disappointing. Sure 3 series have always been modest, but this one is just downright cheap. The nav screen has too many sub menus and takes forever to accomplish anything (5 menus to turn on seat heat) It also obstructs your peripheral view of the road. And the iDrive controls are in an awkward position and more complicated than ever. Compared to a well appointed Subaru Outback at the same price, I’d take the Outback. The BMW engine is better hands down, but the Outback looks better, drives better, has a better cabin, better nav/infotainment and waaaay more cargo room. I regret saying this as much as you probably regret reading it. I’m BMW through and through but this thing is mostly just confusing.

Awesome purchase idea
I decided to upgrade my X1 to the X3 to get the peanut butter interior color and I’m so glad I did. I loved everything about my X1 and love my X3 just as much if not more. I especially love that the X3’s braking system is so much better and it’s just as comfortable as the X1. The driving and handling is just as good and it performed perfectly when I took it on a road trip. BMW will be my future buys because why fix it if it’s not broken.

Not in love with my bmw
I configured the 2020 bmw x3 m40i fully loaded even though a few things weren't available, remote start, dimly lit dash gauges, ventilated seat with bolsters, android auto, comfortable seats & smooth ride, all those I knew when ordered I thought I would have to deal with the short comings, now 1 year later 3700 miles I can't wait to get out of this suv & into Cadillac or Lexus etc. The good are the power, & gas mileage, I'm feeling guilty for feeling this way, this car is not a lemon it's short comings I can't live with anymore, I came out of 2013 Vette loved that car but it's very difficult to get in & out of with bad back & being 70 yrs old. Cadillac xt5 would fit better but never as fast as BMW, but since I'm usually in congested traffic won't be able to speed anyway

Used PHEV---Worth the extra cost
Just bought a 2020 X3 PHEV. Not my first BMW PHEV as I had a 2022 330e for a short while. I wasn't fond of the seat ergonomics of the '22 330e so I traded it in. However, the X3 is much better from that perspective. These cars are a good value, but even better if you plug them in daily. Otherwise, you might want to consider paying less for the gas only version. I love plug-ins. I bought this one with only 25k miles so plenty of warranty left. Range is actually improving... most likely the previous owner did not plug it in much. It's summer and I can fairly easily achieve between 16 and 20 miles ev range only. I drive about 35 miles a day... though most of the time i let the car figure out when to use EV only so on the highways above 70mph it switches to gas only. I've been averaging a combined 55+ mpg which is just a bit lower than my 330e. Otherwise, this car is all around fantastic. It's solid as a rock. You can't hardly hear the engine, and you dang near can't hear the change-over between EV and gas. We have a Chrysler Pacifica PHEV and while it too is great, they could learn a bit from BMW on those aspects. The infotainment system is very easy to use and has so many ways to adjust things it's really fantastic. The only negative is the standard sound-system which my car has. It is by far the worst I've heard in a premium vehicle.... oh well. The trunk is also a bit awkward due to the high load floor... but it's not a deal breaker. All in all this is one fantastic vehicle.
Beautiful BMW
2020 BMW well maintained. Was an Avis rental with excellent records of maintenance. Drives beautifully. Exactly what I was looking for. Colin at Anchorage Drive.car was great to work with. Ultimately Edmund found the precise vehicle I wanted.
