Bought certified pre-owned with low miles. I wanted something a step above the main players in this segment, such as the CR-V and CX-5. Love the looks — still looks like a SUV — and the performance really shines compared to competitors. I was lucky to find one optioned with sport seats; this was only a $400 option when new but for some reason they’re almost impossible to find. The standard seats were not comfortable for me, so make sure you spend some quality time testing for comfort, or try to find one with sport seats, which are sooo much better IMO. Other complaints are on the technology. I’m new to the BMW iDrive system and it has a steep learning curve. I hear the updated versions are a little better. No Apple Car Play stinks, especially in a luxury vehicle. I think it’s started becoming more widely available as standard starting in 2018. My biggest complaint on technology is the BMW navigation system that requires you to purchase and manually install map updates. Without the ability to use Apple Car Play, the built-in navigation is my primary means of navigating and I’ve already discovered that some missing roads in my area. Map updates through the dealer are a non-starter given the exorbitant cost, so I’m trying a 3rd party update. Anyway, only an inconvenience if you want to use the factory navigation, which is really your only option on the infotainment screen. Other than my quibbles with the tech, the driving experience is fantastic. And the upgraded sound system is outstanding — highly recommend. My X1 has the technology package, and the heads up display is actually quite useful once you get used to it. No blind spot monitoring is a strange safety omission in my vehicle considering it was pretty much fully loaded, but I don’t mind checking my own blind spots. Overall I’m really happy with the purchase, and I think it’s a pretty good value in the used market.

Completely different car from earlier X1's

My wife and I test-drove a 2017 X1 last week. Happily, we also test-drove an X3, which, in our opinion, made the X1 look terrible. She ended up buying a new X3, which she finds, at this point, to be a wonderful car. Anyway, I own a 2013 X1, which I like very much. I have nothing but good to say about it. But the 2017 we drove was definitely a different car from mine. It looks pretty much the same, although I think it is a little larger. The turbo-four still has the nice kick to it. But the ride was hard -- bumpy and uncomfortable compared to my 2013 and especially compared to the X3 we drove. So, if you are interested in an X1, keep in mind that you are considering a car so different from the older X1's that perhaps it should have been renamed.

fun to drive with some reliability issue

overall an ok car with some issue on reliability. the car feels solid and smooth when cruising on the highway, abeit some tier noise. the main concern is the building quality and reliability. within two and half year and around 25k miles, the car needed replacement/fixes for various things including air condition, door latch, liftgate and battery. so two starts only.

Out With The Old..In With The New

We have had our X1 2017 for 14 months. Positive comments include terrific pick up, unencumbered interior, a nice tight turning radius, a huge panoramic moon roof [option], bold styling ,outstanding heater/air conditioning and a good value for a new Beemer. As well, if living in a colder climate, DO spring for the heated front seats and steering wheel. They are worth every penny. Lastly, in 2017 many options were standalone so the cost was individualized, not part of a more expensive package. Needed improvements include 1.MUCH more comfortable front seats. Our options included sport seats after reading the consumer reviews, which were right on. Even the sport seats are narrow and very firm. We have had 5 other Beemers and never had an issue with the seat comfort. 2. Considerable road noise. We have 19" upgraded tires[run flat] and they might contribute to the level of noise. 3. BE CAREFUL!! The 'sliding rear seat' option does provide for more cargo room[ about 4 "] but since the regular position of the rear seat without the option almost abuts the rear wheel well already, you only gain about an inch of additional rear legroom by paying for this option. It's simply not worth it unless additional cargo room is a priority. I am 6' 3" and need to move the front seat all the way back, leaving a tight area for legroom behind my driver's seat. BMW did curtail their warranty so be advised that items covered in the past now cost the consumer[e.g. windshield wipers replacement during scheduled service- standard in the past... over $30.00 EACH now] The length of the warranty has been modified as well. UPDATE.....The X1 is built in Germany, unlike the X3 and 5. I took a sleighride with our X1 this past winter and quickly discovered that the Potenza tires were exclusively SUMMER tires . Be advised that I believe Germany does not recognize all season tires- only summer or winter. I was informed that winter tires are required and cars without them can be ticketed in Germany. SO....IF that is accurate, since we ordered our car from Germany in April, it came equipped with summer tires. We will be switching to all season within the next year. Lastly, the Potenza tires, while enabling the car to maneuver well does not appear to wear well. At 17,00 miles, the tread is 3/4 gone....NOT impressive.

The F48 X1 is a Pleasure

My fiancée and I purchased our second hand 2017 X1 in 2019. We were looking at vehicles in the crossover segment and wanted our vehicle to have status while having the ability to fit three adults in the back seats. Fun fact, the X1 of this generation was nearly identical to the X3 in terms of interior space. The GLA and Q3 of that era were too small, so we went with the X1. The X1 is great in that it meets all of our utility needs while being a pleasure to drive. It may be too firm for some, but we love it. It handles much like my E30, as I believe it’s based on the 2 series platform, frequently mentioned as the closest current platform to the E30 in terms of drivability. Many argue that it’s not a “real BMW” due to it being offered as a FWD vehicle in the base model. That’s fine, I haven’t driven the FWD model so I don’t have input there. As a fan of the brand and a general enthusiast I enjoy driving our XDrive X1. Update: I feel just as positive about the X1 now as I did when initially writing the review.
