Overview
Think of Audi's A6 Allroad as a lifted wagon version of the A6 sedan. It offers five-passenger seating, a taller roof than the standard A6, and significant cargo space all packaged with Audi style and a suite of technologies to enhance the driving experience. Every A6 Allroad comes standard with Audi's turbocharged 335-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 and all-wheel drive. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is standard. The Allroad's air suspension offers adjustable damping and a raised ride height relative to the A6. But it still uses very low-profile tires so, at best, it offers modest dirt-road chops. Don't plan any rock-crawling missions.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2022 Audi A6 allroad Premium Plus 4dr Wagon AWD w/55 TFSI (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 7AM) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.32 per gallon for premium unleaded in Virginia.

Avg. Midsize Car
We like the A6 Allroad for its smooth, comfortable ride and tech-laden cabin. But being tall and soft diminishes the A6's otherwise stellar road manners. And even among luxury wagons, the Allroad is pretty pricey. If you're shopping for a midsize luxury wagon with dirt-road capability, your options are limited to only a handful of choices including the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain and Volvo V90 Cross Country.
If you're willing to look downmarket the Subaru Outback will give you similar capability at about half the price. Or there's the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo, which costs significantly more and trades any notion of off-road ability for much sharper handling and quicker acceleration. And if SUVs are an option, well, there's an entire spectrum to fit the bill. Read our Expert Rating for all the details.

Performance
7.0/10
How does the A6 allroad drive? The A6 Allroad is only available with one engine — Audi's 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 — and it's the party piece of this big wagon. At our test track, the A6 Allroad zipped from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, a very quick time for the class. Its seven-speed automatic transmission shifts quickly and smoothly. Unfortunately, it falls behind in other areas of the driving experience.
The Allroad's brakes feel spongy in daily driving, the steering is vague, and handling is compromised by the higher-than-average ride height and off-road-oriented tires. Off-road capability is better than average for the segment, with an adjustable suspension that gives the Allroad more ground clearance, but the long front and rear overhangs limit capability overall.

Comfort
8.0/10
How comfortable is the A6 allroad? An ultra-quiet interior, comfortable seats and smooth highway ride make for an excellent combination in the Allroad. The optional Contour Seating package provides supportive and well-padded front seats, while the rear seats are just as well suited to long drives. The standard air suspension and big tire sidewalls combine to absorb almost all bumps, big and small.
Thanks to the optional dual-pane acoustic glass, the Allroad's interior is whisper quiet. The climate control cools things down quickly inside the large cabin, but there is a pretty steep learning curve for the touchscreen controls. Heated and ventilated seats work well too, so achieving the perfect temperature inside is easy.

Interior
8.0/10
How’s the interior? The Allroad's cabin is spacious, with plenty of room for adults in all four main seating positions. There's lots of headroom, legroom and shoulder room — it's at the head of the class in this regard. The driving position gives you a commanding view of the road thanks to the Allroad's higher-than-standard ride height. That higher ride height also makes it easier to get in and out of.
Outward visibility is good, though the large front pillars impede the view somewhat. But the side and rearview windows are large, and the Allroad comes standard with an excellent 360-degree camera for fitting into tight spaces. It take a bit of time, but after a few days in the A6, all the controls feel relatively intuitive to use and are easily within reach.

Technology
9.0/10
How’s the tech? The dual-screen infotainment and climate system can seem daunting, but tech-savvy users willing to adjust to the lack of physical buttons will get the hang of it after a few days and it becomes very easy to use. Driver aids such as adaptive cruise control and the blind-spot warning system work well too.
The Virtual Cockpit configurable instrument cluster is genuinely useful in putting maps as well as vehicle and engine speed data right where they're needed. It's augmented by an extremely crisp full-color head-up display and a powerful standard audio system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and connect quickly, but if you don't want to connect, the A6's native voice command system is easy to use and it understands natural language.

Storage
7.0/10
How’s the storage? Compared to a standard A6, the Allroad wagon has impressive trunk space and 1.4 inches of additional rear headroom. But compared to other luxury wagon rivals, the Allroad is merely average. Its trunk offers 30 cubic feet of storage space, but wagons from Mercedes and Volvo offer more space.
Small-item storage is average too, with a few cupholders, an adequate-size center console and slender door pockets. The rear seat has enough space to fit most child seats, with easy-to-locate anchor and tether points in the outboard seating positions.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates that the A6 Allroad will get 24 mpg combined. That's right in the ballpark with other lifted luxury wagons like the Volvo V90 Cross Country (25 mpg) and the Mercedes-Benz E 450 All-Terrain (24 mpg). Over our 115-mile test loop, the A6 Allroad proved even more efficient than its EPA rating, returning 25.8 mpg.
Value
7.5/10
Is the A6 allroad a good value? The A6 Allroad, like its sedan brother, offers an extremely well-built cabin with attractive materials that are pleasant to see and to touch. Even against rivals from BMW and Mercedes, the Audi feels top-notch. Fuel economy estimates are average for the segment, as is the Audi's four-year/50,000-mile warranty.
Our test vehicle was the top trim, Prestige. It comes with several desirable safety features, as well as a long list of creature comforts. However, Audi's asking price is a lot more than what you'd have to pay to get a similar Volvo V90 Cross Country.

Wildcard
7.0/10
You might have fun tossing the Allroad around on a dirt trail, but when it comes to truly difficult off-road terrain, you'll want something with a bit more ground clearance. And because of all the off-road oriented equipment, the Allroad is significantly less fun to drive on a curvy back road than the standard A6. Powerful turbocharged V6 acceleration is always there to make it exciting on the highway, and its understated, classy looks always make it feel upscale, but the A6 Allroad isn't as exciting or as practical as we'd like.
Which A6 allroad does Edmunds recommend?
The A6 Premium Plus is loaded with convenience, safety and luxury features. It comes with big-ticket items like a 360-degree camera and a configurable digital instrument cluster (Virtual Cockpit). But, for a little more, we like the Prestige trim, which comes with the Executive package (optional on Premium Plus trims).

4/5 stars, THE A6 ALLROAD ON THE EDGE OF THE WILD WEST
Dakota Territory Terror!!!,
Prestige 4dr Wagon AWD w/55 TFSI (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 7AM)
I ve had my A6 for roughly 5 months! So far……I’m enjoying the daylights out of it! There are some things I really like.
#1 Pro). The styling is eye catching…I’ve had Lexus, Cadillac, Porsche ,Lincolns, and numerous corvettes and muscle cars…..nothing has caught the public’s eye like this car…….nearly everyday, someone comments! My UPS driver thinks it’s “ the most beautiful … car…” he’s ever seen…..usually the first question is “what is it? It has the four rings in the grill, but the grill is so distinctive, that most do even notice the Audi rings.
#1 con). This is actually a little thing, but it drives me nuts how Audi could build a $76,000 (MSRP) vehicle and provided a power tailgate close ONLY on the tailgate! What were they thinking?
There are a lot of lesser things that I really like about this car: the rear steer, the mini hybrid helper motor and attendant acceleration , the adjustable air suspension, the massage seating, the interior night lighting and last but certainly not least, the abundant technology!!
I transitioned from a 2019 Lincoln Nautilus……..nearly identical engine specs, but the Allroad would blow the doors of the Lincoln in acceleration and BRAKING……..OMG!! Sans seatbelt and you’ll have a interesting imprint on your chest!
So Yep…..I’m still enjoying I driving it and the Tech should keep me occupied till it’s time is done! I gotta give my BluesWagon an 8.5! Still 1 full point higher than my Porsche Cayenne S! ( and it had the intoxicating V-8)
5/5 stars, Mommy’s new toy

Prestige 4dr Wagon AWD w/3.0 TFSI (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 7AM)
This car does everything: neighborhood, highway off-road. It’s a dream to drive with a very comfortable cabin and lots of power. All the benefits of an SUV but drives like a sedan.
5/5 stars, Unusual and Understated luxurious practicality
JKE,
Prestige 4dr Wagon AWD w/3.0 TFSI (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 7AM)
A rare sight among ubiquitous SUVs, this car has been a delight and has so far not disappointed in 2 and 1/2 years of ownership. I purchased the prestige model, with the additional options of the contour luxury seating package, 4-wheel dynamic steering, and the 20th Anniversary package only offered for A6 allroads ordered in 2020 (a cosmetic package featuring a unique/immediately … retired exterior color and some very minor interior details not available on regular prestige allroads and A6 sedans). A total of only 40 anniversary models were sold in the USA. My favorite A6 allroad features are the 4-wheel steering allowing for tighter maneuverability and u-turns; the acoustic side window glass for noticeable quietness over the premium plus model; and the air suspension allowing for a refined ride over less than ideal road surfaces. The standard V6 horsepower provides excellent acceleration. Being a wagon, this is a car that does not scream for attention and goes largely ignored, yet it does receive admiring glances from those relatively few folk who know/enjoy cars. If extrovert attention is what you want for the considerable money spent, in my opinion this car is not for you. There have been no exterior visual changes among the 2020 thru 2023 model years, aside from a black optics package not offered in 2020.
I never particularly liked station wagons and couldn't have imagined I would ever eventually buy one, but this niche car is sleek and stylish. This is essentially a luxury sedan-type automobile which also offers the hauling capacity and practicality of a larger SUV. With it's lower center of gravity affecting driving dynamics the A6 allroad is, for me, considerably more enjoyable and engaging to drive that an equally priced/luxuriously equipped Audi Q7.
I find it a little odd that the professional review numerical ratings from many of the various automobile media outlets, released each model year 2020 thru 2023, get modestly higher for the A6 allroad. Yet the allroad's only physical modifications during these four model years have centered around exterior color availability and packaging content, mostly at the premium plus level. Body detailing; engine horsepower and transmission; interior layout and detailing; MMI learning and operability; driving capability and suspension dynamics; and the car's structural mechanics are virtually identical among all 4 model years. The driving and performance specs are identical. Not surprising, only the MMI software has modestly improved, yet has the same physical operation and visual characteristics. Sadly in my opinion, the 4-wheel dynamic steering option is no longer available after 2020, and is now only offered on the considerably more expensive RS6 wagon.
5/5 stars, The Family GTO
Robert C,
Prestige 4dr Wagon AWD w/55 TFSI (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 7AM)
I’d become very tired of driving SUVs, but still need a versatile family vehicle. Oh yeah, and it had to put a smile on my face when I drive it. This checked all the boxes. It’s lovely to drive with very good acceleration, excellent handling and a top notch ride quality due to the air suspension. We’ve taken very long road trips and it worked out well, and when I take it into the … windy roads it’s a delight.
