Just had my 2005 Xterra clutch (failed at about 59K) rebuilt w/ Jim Wolf Technology (JWT) repl. parts (see previous message #166 about my clutch problem). It took about 4 weeks to get the JWT clutch parts (I elected not to throw good money after bad on more quickly available, but inferior undersized Nissan replacement parts). Ben w/JWT seemed pretty familiar with this Xterra clutch problem issue. Total cost parts and ... Read More
Clutch on my 2005 Xterra just failed at about 59K miles-totally unexpected. In this case, very little warning of a problem-one week vehicle was fine, and the next week the clutch was slipping big-time, as opposed to one other clutch failure I've experienced (after more than 100K miles) where ample warning (gradually increasing slippage) in advance of total failure were evident. This unexpected clutch problem also happened 1 week before a ... Read More
Got an offer through the BBB from Nissan to settle for $500 "in a goodwill gesture". I gave it a day to think about it, and accepted, as I didn't know if I countered their offer with a higher amount, they may wash their hands of it and go to arbitration. My chances then would be unknown, maybe zero, so I felt it was better than nothing. Besides, it was just ... Read More
I bought my '06 Xterra new in 2007. At 7954 miles, the clutch gave out. Took it to the dealer, he repaired/replaced it and said they decided to use the warranty ( no charge ) because they figured it was NOT a "driver" issue, ie., a bad part/design. OK, last week, 27,000 miles ( and 2 months out of the Nissan warranty, it did it again. The clutch does not engage. ... Read More

hi, I just purchased a 2005 Xterra...is the etching have to do with the car windows? I though it sounded weird? would u give me your insight on that?
I have a 2005 Nissan Xterra. I recently have been noticing a problem. I go to start my car and when I turn the key, it turns but nothing happens. The few times it's happened the car was fine all day then out of nowhere I go to start it and nothing. I wait a while then it starts. I thought it was the chip in the key but when it ... Read More
i was getting 11 mpg......on my 2005 xterra. the problem was when i cleaned the battery posts, i did not realize that the ecu got re-set and when i started engine it was on its re-learning air/fuel mixture procedure...... you must keep rpm's from 1000 to 1500 and not go above that for the following: take truck to open highway with low rpm's and get up to 60 mph for 15 ... If you have a fuel gauge that doesn't go up to full after you fill your tank coupled with a "Service Engine Soon" MIL on your console, the problem is probably an error code PO463. This is the fuel level sending unit. It's a common to very common issue with the Xterra at around 40k miles. Mine went bad on a cross country trip at 39980 miles. No, it's not covered ... Read More
Wait a minute! I'm not one of those people who is blindly loyal to one brand over another, but reading this last last posting made me want to reply. I will summarize here the items I take issue with: 1) If you look at cost of ownership reports from objective sources, you'll see that Jeeps have far more mechanical problems over the life of the vehicle than Nissans do. I'm trading in my 2005 RSX Type-S for a Nissan Xterra SE. I dealt with some a-hole Nissan dealers last night who completely lied to me about everything because I'm a young woman and they think I'm an idiot. I've been seeing that people have been getting them for around 26k, is this right?
I'm in the same boat - want something with good off-road capabilities (in my case, pretty much just for camping and running to the store when our RX400h is busy). I WANT to consider the Land Rover, (I find the Jeep ugly), but reliability on both those is dismal and abysmal. The Nissan is exemplary. The other vehicle I'm seriously considering is a Kia Sorento. They look great, have a real ... Read More

Need to decide which the better deal and i was hoping I could get some free advice. My two choices are as follows: Brand New 2006 Nissan Xterra S with the utility package for 21,500 (pending a dealership can make that price work) with 6.25% financing - 353 montly payments. OR 2005 Xterra SE (rockford fosgate etc.) with 15,000 miles from a rich private sealer who's looking to unload it at ... Read More
Actually, The Xterra does not have better "total legroom" as the front seating dimensions aren't as big as the JGC. And yes the Xterra has higher ground clearance(which explains it's buckboard ride) and somewhat better approach angles but not better departure and breakover angles. But the Jeep is still tops with "3" different 4WD systems, something the Nissan can only dream of. And with QD, the Jeep is unstopable on anything ... Read More
Actually, with the new body style, the Xterra beats the Grand Cherokee in 1. Head room 2. Total Leg room 3. Cargo Space 4. Towing capacity (5000lbs versus 3500 for the V6 GC which is the one comparable in price) 5. Gas Mileage 6. Ground clearance 7. Approach/departure angle 8. Angle over approach It also has 1. Part time 4WD instead of full time w/ shift on the fly (a nice ... Read More
You really need to compare the Xterra to the Jeep Liberty, closer in size, Grand Cherokee is closer in size to the Murano. That being said: I bought the Xterra and after 1k miles I don't regret it 1 bit. I've made 2 long distance trips and got 21 and 22mpg without the engine even broken in yet, and 15mpg in mixed city/hwy. I wouldn't call that terrible, especially for its ... Read More
I am looking at both the 2006 Nissan Xterra and the 2005 or 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee with either a v6 or v8 (not the Hemi) and am wondering which one is the better vehicle. I am a young professional (28) and am looking for style and comfort, but also a young professional/hip look. I know the gas milage on each is terrible. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help.
I fill 87 gasoline into the tank to maximum level, until the store fuel pump nozzle cutoff valve activates. I then drive until the amber/yellow low fuel warning light comes on. The tank gets filled up and the pump readout shows, on average, ~18.5 gallons filled into the tank. There is a clear deficit of approximately 2.6 gallons in my specific Xterra package, which is a 2-wheel drive SE. I am ... Read More
Yeah, you can, but you need to buy the receiver, wires, and antenna from the dealer. it's like $600 all together. Or you can just go with an external, removeable model. I got the XM roadie XT in my 05 SE and it works great. spend a little time to run the wires right and the install will be a clean one. Mike
If the vehicle did not have the XM/Sirius satelite radio added to the car when it was purchased, can it be added later? I am getting mixed information, since the information booklet says that the Rocksford Fosgate radio system is "pre-wired for satelite radio" standard, but that XM/Sirius must have been added during installation for it to work? Yes, Mike, I just purchased a 2005 Xterra 3 weeks ago. I have put 2000 miles on the SUV. Between the 4WD, in town, highway and highway with A/C on, I am averaging 18mpg. Not to bad. Nissan advertises 16 city and 21 highway. I have the 4 liter 6 cyl. :D 265HP. It's a real race horse! :D
I think Nissan wanted to separate the Xterra a little more from the Pathfinder. Sounds like you fell on the Pathfinder side of the divide, except for no 6-speed at all on the Pathfinder. Specs and pricing for the 2005 Xterra are now on the Nissan website (www.nissanusa.com). A loaded Off-Road edition goes for $28,930. Can anyone confirm whether or not the 2005 Xterra will require premium unleaded? Nissan has been requiring premium on more and more models lately. At this point, all implementations of the 3.5L V6 (from which the Xterra's new 4.0L engine is derived) require premium. I know the current SC Xterra requires premium, but I figure the supercharger might have something to do with that. My hope is that Nissan will wake ... Read More
