The 2026 Z4 is BMW's smallest and most affordable convertible. This two-seater is at its best on curvy roads or on road trips where you can put down the top and enjoy the car's stable handling and comfortable ride. The Z4 carries over into 2026 unchanged, but that's OK: It's a solid roadster that provides plenty of comfort, luxury and driving enjoyment for a relatively low starting price.

Edmunds spotlight: What's the right Z4 for you?

Most luxury-convertible shoppers will be happy with the base sDrive30i model. Its 255-horsepower turbo-four engine provides plenty of grunt, hitting 60 mph in a quick 5.3 seconds when we tested it. But folks who prefer more power and performance should step up to the M40i. Its 382-hp six-cylinder engine blasted the convertible to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. The M40i also comes equipped with larger brakes and adaptive sport suspension. But if you want the ultimate Z4 driving experience, you should splurge for the M40i's Edition Handschalter package. It adds a manual transmission and additional performance upgrades.

Competitors to consider

You might want to check out the Chevrolet Corvette convertible and the Porsche 718 Boxster. Both are more expensive than the Z4 but provide superior performance. The Mazda MX-5 Miata is another great option that provides much of the Z4's top-down fun but at a much lower price. Other options are typically larger four-seat convertibles that include BMW's 4 Series and Mercedes-Benz's CLE.

How does the Z4 drive? The BMW Z4 impresses on the test track, and that's regardless of engine. The four-cylinder Z4 sDrive30i accelerated to 60 mph in a scant 5.3 seconds at our test track, while the six-cylinder Z4 M40i did the same deed in 4.1 seconds, or 4.3 seconds with the optional six-speed manual gearbox. Either engine offers a lot of low-end torque for effortless acceleration, and the brakes provide decent stopping power. Handling characteristics for both models are similar too, with lots of grip and composed, predictable cornering.

Adding the optional Handschalter manual transmission improves the steering and overall handling thanks to meaningful tuning tweaks. We think it's a must-have upgrade that notably improves the fun you can have with the Z4.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Z4? Ride quality and comfort depend highly on road conditions even if you're in a Z4 with the optional adaptive M Sport suspension. The Z4 cruises well on the highway and even over less than perfect pavement. That said, the seats are mounted so close to the rear axle that any bounces you do feel are fairly pronounced. The seats are shaped well, but we'd prefer more lateral support. The climate control works quickly and evenly, though there's no convenient way to sync the dual-zone system.

The most impressive part might be the Z4's relatively quiet cabin with the top up, especially for a convertible. You won't have to shout just to have a conversation on the highway, and the lack of a roof didn't seem to cause any unnecessary vibrations or rattles.

Interior

How’s the interior? The Z4's interior is surprisingly roomy for a car this small, a boon for taller drivers looking for an occasional open-air experience. Unlike some other convertibles, you won't feel claustrophobic with the top raised. The Z4 is at or near the top of the class when it comes to headroom, shoulder room and legroom. The power-operating top moves quickly and, when it's stored, doesn't eat up any cargo room in the trunk. The windshield pillar and steep windshield are something to watch out for when you're getting inside with the top down.

The driving position is fine, though the tall hood and doors do make you feel hunkered down in the car. Because the infotainment controls take up a large portion of the center console, the cupholders have been hidden away in the center console, a bit inconvenient since there's no good place to rest your arm.

How’s the tech? BMW's infotainment system is robust, but it might take you a while to learn the ins and outs of the system. Voice controls work surprisingly well. The system isn't as refined as the latest one from Mercedes-Benz, but it's better than the older system that's in most Mercedes convertibles. BMW offers both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is still a bit of a rarity for the class. There's only one USB port, though the wireless charging pad makes up for the lack of ports. The audio system is fine and provides plenty of volume with the top down, but the audio quality, even from the upgraded system, is just a bit above average.

The Z4's adaptive cruise control and blind-spot warning system work well, though the lane centering system can be too aggressive with its steering corrections.

Storage

7/10

How’s the storage? One of the best things the Z4 has going for it is the power-operating convertible top. Unlike many other convertibles, the top takes up no cargo space when lowered, a huge plus for those who've dealt with intrusive tops in the past.

Unfortunately, cabin storage for small items can't quite match the trunk space. The door pockets are small, and the cargo net behind the seats doesn't hold items in place very well. A split opening armrest conceals the cupholders but that means the passenger will lose their armrest when you bring along drinks.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? Both of the Z4's available engines are fairly fuel-efficient. The Z4 sDrive30i gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg combined, while the Z4 M40i is estimated to get 25 mpg combined with the automatic transmission. On our real-world evaluation route, we saw the sDrive30i return 26.6 mpg and the M40i an impressive 31.6 mpg. We attribute the six-cylinder's higher mileage to it simply not having to work as hard to get up to and maintain speed, especially on longer uphill grades. Like any performance car, if you drive the Z4 with any gusto, it's easy to get fuel economy figures in the teens.

Is the Z4 a good value? The Z4 looks and feels like a quality vehicle, with a relatively clean design and a premium feel to all the controls. It feels less spartan or bare than some rivals. And despite the lack of a fixed roof, we didn't notice any rattles or squeaks during our tests. Pricing and features are good for the class, and while the Porsche 718 Boxster S and Chevrolet Corvette offer more performance, they also cost considerably more than the most expensive Z4.

The warranty is above average for the class and should help alleviate some of the concerns about maintenance costs when it comes to German luxury cars.

Despite the sharp looks and strong performance figures, the Z4 isn't an out-and-out sports car, though the addition of a six-speed manual transmission helps a bit. While it may lack the extra sharp handling and quick reflexes of something like a Porsche 718 Boxster or Chevrolet Corvette, the Z4, with either engine, is a stable, comfortable and rapid enough convertible for most buyers. The sizable cargo area and quiet cabin and quick-folding convertible top help it feel right at home on the highway or a winding coastal drive.

Which Z4 does Edmunds recommend?

High-dollar convertibles offer a better driving experience with a robust engine, and that's why we recommend the M40i. Adaptive suspension, larger brakes and an upgraded rear differential are additional performance goodies. But if the M40i is out of your budget, the base sDrive30i is still a solid little roadster.

2022 BMW Z4 sDrive30i 2dr Convertible (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

My wife has always wanted a blue convertible roadster with a tan interior and after many years of waiting she decided to get a 2022 Z4 sDrive 30i in Mediterranean Blue Metallic with Cognac Leather with the Convenience and Premium Level Two packages. She did not opt for the sports handling package. This was her purchase and she did the research with a few suggestions by me along the way. … I wasn't sure what to expect so I was pleasantly surprised when I got behind the wheel. Most driving enthusiast sites tout the sDrive 40i with the more powerful engine along with the M version, improved handling, bigger tires, etc...as the way to go. However, I have been very happy with this car. We aren't ever going to take it to the track nor are we looking to push it to the extreme limits of its capabilities. The 4 cylinder 255 horsepower engine offers plenty of power and torque and the car is nicely balanced with the lighter front end due to the smaller engine. The car is refined and the seats are very comfortable. The trunk is larger than I would have expected and the sound proofing is very good. Usually, driving a convertible with the top up is a noisy and unpleasant experience but that is not the case with the Z4. This car could be a legitimate daily driver for most of the year. We got it in the middle of December after waiting 4 months for it to be built. Knowing that my wife would want to drive it on nicer winter days, I swapped out the summer tires for a set of all season Goodyear Eagles and we'll switch them back when the weather warms up in the Spring. Pluses - refined ride - fun to drive - comfortable seats - high quality interior - excellent infotainment system with a bit of a learning curve - quick and responsive without being dangerously fast - again we're looking to have fun on twisty roads, not to break lap records - 8 Speed Automatic Transmission is fantastic - very quick and smooth - Excellent Gas Mileage - especially on the highway. Minuses - BMW upgrades can add up quickly - requires Premium Fuel (no real surprise) - Steering - its electronic so it feels a bit like a video game - brakes are grabby at low speeds so they require some delicate feathering - visibility isn't great with the top up - Minimal storage in the cabin but hey - its a convertible two seater so this isn't a shocker. Overall - she loves the car and I am impressed, it is fun on twisty roads but very comfortable for longer trips with a trunk that allows for weekend getaways and trips to the grocery store, it could be legitimate daily driver.
