Daily Driver Perfection

I've had the car for three weeks. It is super fun to drive as a daily driver. The car shines in stop and go traffic. When you go around a curve or make a turn, the center of gravity is such that you feel you are driving a go-kart. For a daily driver, I consider it an A plus. I do wish it had a few extra features, such as memory seating, a little more range, a heated steering wheel, heated back seats and an extra usb port or two. Other than that, I'm looking forward to many miles of gas-free driving. I also get to drive in the HOV lanes in the DC area, saving me a lot of time on the roads each and every day. Good job, VW!

Just purchased this car a few weeks ago. My first electric vehicle. Several things to get accustomed especially regarding charging, but not difficult to learn. Definitely don't miss going to the gas station. I was a little concerned that this car has been discontinued and will be replace by an entirely new line, but the mark downs were too good to pass up. Add in the tax credits and rebates, and this will be the cheapest car I have ever purchased. Shares many parts with other Golf models that will still be in production. Drives like a hatchback with amazing torque.

I set the battery to charge to 90% but still get about 151 miles of range.

Bought this vehicle couple of weeks ago. Vey nice car. The initial torque and handling is amazing. Very good response on the road. Initially, I thought it is a small car but with folded seat, there is equivalent space than my SUV. With lot of discounts from dealer plus Federal and State rebate, this is a really good bargain. Highly recommended. With 90% charge on the car, I am still getting 150 miles which is a really good distance,

I test drove the new 2020 e-Golf and was pleasantly surprised. I have driven this and the Leaf as electric cars and both will sink you into the seat off the line with their torque but the Golf handles extremely nicely in the corners as well. The only reason I gave this car 4 instead of 5 stars is that the interior feels low quality for a 32,000 dollar vehicle and that I wish the warranty was longer, as VWs are not traditionally the most reliable vehicles in my experience.

Once you drive an electric car like the e-Golf, you will not want to go back to a gas car. Acceleration is brisk, steering is very responsive, braking is precise. We have the base model, with the technology package. The adaptive cruise control makes driving in heavy traffic a breeze. Front collision assist and rear cross traffic braking were very helpful on occasion. Electric range is about 140 miles in summer, 95 miles in winter, with heating or cooling turned on. Our longest commute is 20 miles, and we can return home midday from work, if we wish. One of our work offices has free electric charging, which helps. Charging from empty with 120V outlet takes the whole night, and with 240V outlet, from empty, about 4-5 hours. But we rarely ended up with less than 60% of full charge at the end of the day. Car is small, but there is plenty of space inside, with the boxy shape. And driving in snow is great, due to heavy battery pack. What, then, are the downsides, if any? - Biggest downside is that, in Atlantic Blue, the relatively small car is not catching the attention of the other drivers sufficiently. We got cut off a couple of times by drivers who were not paying attention. A bright red, or yellow, would better attract attention, and be safer for driving. - With factory installed tires, you hear a tire sound over 70 or 75 mph, if the freeway is dry. It's a small inconvenience for an otherwise terrific car. - The trunk door had a water leak - a small hole under the left taillight that was not plugged during manufacturing. The dealer fixed it at no cost under warranty. Overall, very pleased with the car, and planning to drive it for many years to come.

This is my third Golf, but first electric. The ride is not as impeccable as my previous Golfs, thanks I assume to the larger rims and low-resistance tires. But the ride is fine and the handling is just as good unless you take it to the limit. Off the line, it feels as quick as a GTI and with no latency. I got the driver assist package and am very glad of that. Other than that, it's a Golf, which is just about the perfect car for the needs of 80% of people. With all the incentives, discounts and gas savings, the cost is right in line with the dead dinosaur version.

We like this car far more than expected. It's fun to drive, snappy, and has silky smooth acceleration. Nimble and easy to park. Range is better than expected with a full charge range as high as 180 miles. Using A/C and heater we get less, but still more than we were expecting.

Own a Model 3 Tesla, fun! More cars? Hummm, wait, can have 3 E-Golf for my Model 3... Let’s try it. After one year, se bought 2! Best quality/price balance on the Market and fun to drive.

I’m at the 11th week of repairs for a high voltage battery fault, and subsequent battery charging system issue. I was at 5 years and 18 days and VW would not cover the charging issue. My car was sent to Colonial VW in Massachusetts since I live in Ohio and the local VW of Perrysburg, Ohio did not have trained techs on site. The car came back from Massachusetts 4 weeks later and I drove it for 2 days. After these 2 days, I attempted to charge it and it wouldn’t take a charge. The local VW dealer advised I replace the on board Battery charger ($2200 part + tax and labor $1100) and when that did not work, advised I continue replacing parts…charging port and battery charging cable, for another $1960. I was told the parts are on back order in North America and the local VW dealership could not provide an estimate for time in getting them. This whole repair has been sub-par, and I’ve been left without a car for 11 weeks. I have been talking with Sylvia at VW of North America customer care and she has been unable to offer advice for a way forward. Even though she manages customer service, she can only activate when I tell her what I want. After several calls, and repeated pleas for help, I suggested VW offer to buy the car back. That immediately prompted an email from her with a process for VW to consider an offer. VW can’t seem to fix my car, but there is a process to divest it? What makes this whole process so maddening, is when the car was in Massachusetts, the service tech knew about the faulty charging issue but did not call or let me know it was faulty. They returned the car to my local VW dealership who didn’t inspect anything before returning the car broken. Instead of waiting for the back order part, I called Colonial VW in Massachusetts and was able to order the part directly from them. They had it in 3 days, but my local dealership refused to request it and preferred to wait for the one they told me was on back order to come in. …9 more days. It will be 12 weeks next week without a car. Never buy a Volkswagen. Service is terrible.

Takes about two weeks to get used to the charging, but I noticed the savings right away. I almost exclusively use cash when I fill up on gas to maximize discounts, and I found myself with so much more money in pocket at the end of the month. I get to charge for free at work, and anyone that has a chair available at work is throwing money away if you don't get an EV. Carpool has also been fantastic in California, and saves anywhere from 20-30% of commuting time. Another thing people may not realize is that there is no engine. Less moving parts, means maintenance is close to zero. This isn't the fastest car on the road, but it has plenty of pep. Highly recommend an EV, and now are going to get Model 3 to replace a 2016 Civic.

It just wouldn't start. Dash said Electronic Error: Stop! Had to have it towed 3 miles away because the only person in my local vw dealer who could work on it quit. In Denver they informed me they couldn't figure it out and sent it to Oxnard? I am still trying to locate my car and no one is telling me anything. I looked on forums and found the same complaint on a lot of these. I hope I get my car back so I can sell it.

I just picked up the last 2018 eGolf SEL Premium on the lot - Very pleased. Range could be better, so could performance - The Tesla Model 3 sets a benchmark that this car falls well short of. But if, like me, you love VW Golfs (this is my 4th since high school :-), this car may be for you. Excellent to drive, adequate performance and range, and the "virtual cockpit" experience is great. The Driver's Assistance Package offers the best Adaptive Cruise Control I've driven yet. I doubt that the resale value will hold up like my 2012 Golf R's did because the technology is evolving so fast, but it truly is a fantastic vehicle. My out-the-door price ($28,500) was more than $10k below the Model 3's current $39,900 no-dicker sticker (before the federal and state incentives).

I was an early adopter buying an e-golf in 2016. Reviews are accurate in that it is a good drive but has limited range. I felt confident buying a golf from VW believing in the quality of manufacturer however my confidence was misplaced. I had several charging issues over the years and under warranty my local dealership resolved the problems after several visits. Just after the 5 year warranty expired with 30,000 miles on the clock, it appears my e-golf is now ready for the scrap heap (so much for the environmental benefits of electric vehicles). The car wouldn't charge and the dealership recommended a $4,000 fix. After the fix, the car still won't charge. The reputation of electric cars is that they require little maintenance, what that appears to mean is that the cars are not serviceable. If it works, great but if you have problems, they don't really know how to fix it. They can ask you to pay for expensive replacement parts but if it doesn't solve the problem, you can buy more expensive replacement parts. VW of America won't stand behind the quality of their vehicles and if you have a problem car (even after just 5 years) then either keep throwing money at it or scrap it.

Volkswagon put a lot of thought into this scooter rated with a 125 mile range. Handling is excellent with battery pack under the floor. Steering is well damped, responsive and accurate. My wife and I value touches like adaptive cruise control and a backup camera hidden under the swing up VW tailgate logo that keeps it clean. Most of our local driving and the total miles in our fleet is done in this car. Since delivery, our charging has been through a switched 120v outlet only. We don't use the car every day and overnight charging gives it sufficient range for our customary needs. I would love to drive it further, it is such a joy. It has GPS which identifies charging points on a center screen but so far we have deferred to a Subaru Forester for longer trips which is not nearly as pleasurable. I think the e-Golf would make it over the pass from Sisters to Silverton, OR okay but coming home would need an overnight charge there and another hour charge in Detroit to make it to the top of the pass. Once it is at the top we found when we brought it home from the Salem dealer the regen will carry it to Sisters in a brisk manner. Mountain driving does use up the battery pretty quickly and A/C and heating and defrost can use up about 20% of the claimed range. Other pluses of the car include heated front seats with power adjustment, 60/40 fold down rear seat back with its own fold down center arm rest.

Battery Capacity and Charging Not as Advertised

This car is not really functional for even a fairly short day trip, as the actual battery capacity is about 100 miles, and then the charging (even at a DC fast charger) ran as slow as 1 mile per minute. Once you have 15 miles left, convenience functions (like the AC) stop working and often charging stations are out of order. So a found myself driving around LA in 110 degree heat, no AC, frantically searching for a charger, while my dog nearly passed out in the car. Not fun! And, more importantly, not safe! On top of that, VW customer service is truly awful. My car was not enabled with CarNet, as it should have been, and they gave me so much of a hassle to fix that I never did. Instead, a paid a total of $8K to get out of my lease and get a Tesla instead. A much better experience, and regret not getting the Tesla in the first place. I didn't really like the futuristic look of the Tesla, but I've gotten used to it, and the Tesla is so well designed and so functional. On sort of a side note, my understanding is that VW was forced to come out with the e-Golf as part of their settlement for false representations regarding their emissions. And yet, this car is also falsely advertised as being able to charge to 80% capacity in about 30 mins, which is not even close to true. I fully support electric vehicles and this is very disappointing. It almost feels like VW came out with this awful car to turn consumers off electric vehicles (if you think I'm crazy watch Who Killed The Electric Car). But consumers should realize there are much better electric car options out there -- like the Tesla. All that being said, if you want a car to just drive around locally for grocery shopping, etc., this car will work fine.

Besides just being a joy to drive, this car is super functional. It is super roomy in the front and back ( I am 6’4” with plenty of leg and head room. Folding down the back seat I have even transported some 8’ 2x4 from the lumber yard, although I don’t recommend it as a construction vehicle. This was my first electric and the 125 mile range was a concern, but I typically get 150-160 miles per charge with careful driving. The car teaches how to conserve power. I easily get a weeks use driving to and from work and weekend errands on a single charge. Didn’t opt for the level 3 charger and glad I didn’t for a local use vehicle. I have never needed it as a level 2 charger quickly tops off my charge while in the grocery store.

Very comfortable, no rattles, nice interior, more expensive feeling of High End than it's competition. The main reason this EV is better than Nissan or Chevy is German Quality. I love that it has so many adjustable Recuperation modes because not everyone likes the way EV's Recuperation makes the car drive, so you can choose from 5 different levels, from just coasting, to the highest level driving with 1 pedal.

VW has preserved the goodness of the gasoline version and eliminated the annoyance of gasoline fill-ups. Charging on the road can be a bit of an adventure, but fortunately I seldom need to. The SE with optional driving aids was a good choice, especially the adaptive cruise control. I think a wagon version could have been made with 200 mile range and would have been even better and cheaper than the ID.4

I have driven this car now for 45k miles and never had any problems. A fully charged battery gives me today the same mileage that I got in 2019 when the car was new (125 miles). Sure, more mileage would be nice, but the current battery capacity is enough for my daily use.

In few years, the $15,000 new cars will be here from China. In the meantime, a used e-Golf fills the gap. Same cabin quality as my [sold] Audi, but without so many bells, whistles and problems. I am on my 3rd year of driving an e-Golf and I could not be happier. I think this is the best car VW has ever built, far superior to the stupid-looking oversized ID-4. . I traded in my beautiful 2015 SEL e-Golf for my 2018 so I could get longer range. Paid less than $15,000 each time for cars with less than 10,000 miles. Now prices have risen, but still a bargain. I will never go back to an ICE vehicle. Too bad this perfect car was introduced before the U S market was ready for it. and too bad it was priced too high. VW was so close: If the price had been a little lower and the range had been a little greater, this car could have outsold the Beetle. Now BYD [Dolphin] will be the one with 200+ mile range and $16,000 price. Take a look at the Hyundai Ionic 5 - that is the car that VW ought to be building right now -looks just like a [slightly bigger] e-golf but $43,000+ is not an enticing price. Best electric car you can buy today in the U S is a 2019 VW e-golf. Many with fewer than 10,000 miles under $25,000. [up from $17,500 six months ago]
