Speaking as an engineer, I think this car has some very nice features: the build material is exceptional with leather seats and leather steering wheel, the handling is very smooth. I would take this car on a long distance trip. It's overpowered, so I wish that V60 had traded off some horsepower for fuel economy. But I think that's just a sign of the times where the parent apparently … needs to go from zero to sixty in less than five seconds to bring the kids to soccer practice.
My biggest complaints about the car are all the silly knobs, not to mention the rather laughable touch screen. The biggest drawback with this vehicle is the inadequate temperature control. Most modern cars allow you to set a temp and the car will adjust the heat level and fan speed using a physical knob. But this car forces you to operate through the touch screen and even then it lacks the ability to auto control the fan speed. My Prius C has a more sophisticated HVAC control system than this! This is a nuisance; it's cumbersome and it's unsafe.
The starter knob is why I put the review title "Quirky". It's a momentary swivel switch which is not appropriate for a combination ignition and starting switch. Most traditional cars use a rotary switch with positions for accessory, ignition on, then a momentary swivel for starting. This way, the driver knows exactly the state of the engine. But the V60 has substituted this switch with a single momentary swivel, so now it's difficult to tell the state of the vehicle: is it running? accessory only? ignition on? Not only does it fail to add functionality, but it actually removes functionality and control from the driver. This violates basic principles of a good design: it should always improve driver ability to control the vehicle, not remove critical functionality.
To complement this inferior ignition switch, the V60 has an even weirder roller knob to select between three performance options. This is in the wrong place (you can spill things and get debris in there, it's seldomly used, so put something useful in it's place) and awkward to use (it's a strange roller knob). Also, it resets to the default mode at each startup, thereby making even more useless. Besides, all it does it change the shifting RPM, but you already have that feature in the gear shifter.
Other issues: there is no dipstick, so for anyone who likes to keep a close watch on the engine, this car is not for you. The one thing the touch screen could have been used for is to monitor and customize all engine measurements: temp., pressure, etc. It has this info in the computer anyway, why not display it?
All this nonsense taken together is sort of like walking through a desert and when you finally reach the oasis, you decide you didn't want a drink of water after all. The V60 has all the ingredients: computer module, sensors, and display unit: Why not take that final step and allow the driver to see the data?
