2025 GMC Canyon
This is going to sound bizarre to some, but I had a 2024 Canyon AT4, in tan. Awesome looking and ran flawlessly. Had one year and about 9000 miles on it. Traded it for a GMC Acadia AT4, missed the SUV style and wanted softer ride. However, the legroom is much different and the seats, once they settled, were downright uncomfortable. It's like the lower cushion side bolsters were … sticking right into my nerve and causing compression sciata. So, off that went and I tried a 2023 Audi Q8. Nice car, yes! BUT not easy for a tall and big guy to get in and out. Plus the A/C is abysmal on hot days, it takes too long to cool off the hotter it is, all computer controlled. Also, no seat belt extenders of any kind allowed, good or bad, it throws an error. So I had to say goodbye to the Audi and return to the Canyon. I didn't want the AT4, too rugged for an old fat guy who never goes off roading. So I looked at the Denali trim. Ride is softer and while still jumps when hitting big road imperfections, it's minimal compared to the AT4 trim. The 20" wheels, with the smaller faced tires, provide a much better ride and/or any tweaks on the suspension. Having had a Canyon recently (only months before) I am quite familiar with it and am comfortable with it. The one thing I had before, and have again, is a slightly (very slightly) rough idle. I've done research and it is the way it is....not a problem, but if expecting the same idle as the Audi, it's not that smooth. And there is nothing wrong either, just the way it is. I can't find a single flaw with this truck except two spots where the paint has a small head on it....one on the drivers door sill and one on the left side of the bed. The paint is miles deep, metallic, and just out of this world. I find myself thinking this truck is seriously underrated by the public and now owning a 2nd one from both 2024 & 2025 model years, I have never had a car purchased new that didn't have immediate issues. Now I only have about 400 miles on it, but nothing wrong. Fit, finish, etc. all really decent. It's been through the car wash twice, no roof issues (it has a sunroof), no leaks, no roof collapse or anything. It was made 04/2025. The engine sounds a bit louder, a tad more growl than the 2024 AT4. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't remember the 2024 AT4 sounding as nice. might just be my imagination. Anyway, there is nothing this truck needs on it, except what bed cover you want to use (if any) and in my case I put on mudflaps. I opted for the GMC official Realtruck Advantage hard flip up and can stand up so protects back glass if desired. Completely dry in bed. And the spray in Berliner from GMC is very thick and durable. I still put a rubber mat on the bed floor to keep smaller items from sliding around, which is working out.
The center console is very deep albeit not very wide or long. It fits everything I need it to. Anything I don't immediately need goes in a cargo organizer in the bed.
Electronics all work, there was a couple of doom and gloom updates on the 2024 that caused issues, and maybe some early 2025's, but I would just reset and move on.
I've learned how to override the auto-shut off after XX minutes when key leaves car or you sit idle too long with key inside. This is because once in a blue moon I leave my assistance dog in the car while I do this or that. I do have a cellular temp monitor in the truck if power is lost or temp goes high or low, so there is a backup in case truck or A/C fails. To do this, you simply press and hold the START button after you've removed your foot from the brake when starting, for about 10 seconds. So brake, press start and HOLD, release brake, and in about 10 seconds you get a DIC message about auto shut off disabled park in an open area. Then you can leave the vehicle running, lock with the remote, and do what you gotta do. Or if you have to sleep in your truck as I've had to do on occasion during power outages at home, you don't have to press the brake every 15 minutes or whatever to keep it running as you'll get no sleep that way!
The radio, the HVAC, the settings and controls are all easy enough to use. No light switch is a concern at first, but I leave mine set to AUTO for lights and rarely have to press the light control and change it. The fog lights I do use when driving and you get used to turning them on through the control screen. Again, not a big deal. When I turn off the auto stop/start (traffic light, stop signs, etc) I turn on fog lights if desired and headlights remain on auto mode.
There is so much to like about this truck. I leave the drivetrain in AUTO mode, I want to take advantage of 4WD when unexpectedly needed, like pulling out on a steep grade with gravel accumulation. Or it starts an unexpected rain shower and roads are slippery.
The finish on the interior has a high grade feeling. The glacier metallic with the cocoa brown trim and teak wood color (I think it's teak?) looks so good together. There is nothing more to want for on the interior. The heated and ventilated seats do their job, the heated steering wheel comes in handy on cold days or for arthritic hands during any season as with the heated seats too. The included running boards do come in handy on this model, it does sit the highest of the trims and has 10.5 inches of ground clearance. I didn't need them on the AT4, but that extra height at times make them necessary.
Driving this is a pleasure, and it has stiff steering which I really can appreciate. I like that more than a loose steering wheel that causes you to swerve if you sneeze. This feels good and firm. Shifting is smooth and so far, no clanging during gear changes that happened every once in awhile with the AT4. It would do that when maybe at 2-5 MPH then would accelerate, and maybe on an incline or something. But this does not do that, and if it ever does, it's not a deal breaker.
For me legroom, seat, and A/C are the deal breakers. I'm not your typical "truck guy" and certainly never expected to be driving a truck, let alone getting rid of one only to go back to it after discovering the lack of affordable options.
During the short stint when I had the Audi, I realized that the brake and tire cost is out of this world, and so is any service or maintenance plan. Brakes and tires go fast on the larger Q7/Q8, and I realized I just didn't have the long term funds to support that lifestyle anyway. Found myself worrying about it knowing that when it came, it would be too expensive to enjoy taking drives. GMC service is reasonable in terms of pricing and I did buy a GM official extended warranty just in case.
Most people who need legroom, seat, and good A/C will probably never realize this is the only real option as in my case. I just stumbled onto it by mistake the first time and after searching endless amounts of cars, only the German cars have some of those things, but are in a cost center all of its own. This looks good, so far runs good, and no issues that cause for me to pause and make me think I made a bad decision. I'm an old, overweight, sick middle aged guy, I want to be comfortable on rides while I can still do this. I placed a priority on being able to go on drives and be comfortable, not on what I drive, so long as it's comfortable in those areas that are necessary. This fits the bill for me and my little dog who go everywhere together.
