responsive with jumpy accelerator
The acceleration and handling is excellent. When I drive it it feels very stable and sure around obstacles. Visibility is great. It is also surprisingly roomy inside. I don’t like the jumpy accelerator. Update in 2021: Subaru has fixed two safety recalls, and they also fixed an issue with my key getting stuck in the ignition (even though my warranty had already expired). I love that Subaru stood behind the vehicle.

The Solid Basics!
The Forester is larger, that is, taller and more spacious feeling up front in the driving area than is the Outback. It also rides higher and feels more like an SUV than does the Outback, which rides more like a station wagon to me. So, it depends on your personal preference. Both cars increase in cost as you go up the TRIM scale. I got the basic model of the Forester. It feels solid, reliable, and safe. Just the kind of vehicle I was looking for and know that I can rely upon for years to come. Very happy with my purchase.

Love, its what makes my Subaru a Subaru...
Do your homework; both Consumer's Reports annual car review edition and Car and Driver research was helpful. Also, test drive the competition's products as well; for us, the Subaru Forester beat all the others when it came to visibility, ease of getting in and out, value, amenities and dealership relations... Initially thought the CVT transmission might take some getting used to, but, in fact, its so seamless neither my wife or I give it a second thought. My only pick is that I wish the fuel cap was on the left (driver's side) instead of the right. Okay, now, after having owned the car for a little over a year, we still think we made the right choice; other then routine oil changes, we have had no issues with the vehicle or the servicing dealership (Hodges Subaru). In our opinion, the Forester is still a strong recommendation. We now have about 22,000 miles on the Subi and we are still very happy; the vehicle is still tight and, for its size, the handling is excellent. However, a small pick... the air bag indicator light on the upper console stays on all the time to show (I guess) that it is functioning; it's distracting and unnecessary (especially at night)...

My first Subaru
Drove everything in this class. Subaru clearly has the advantage. This car currently has 23,000 miles and combined city and highway I am averaging almost 29 MPG! This car will grow on you the longer you have it. Well done Subaru!

disappointed
Great interior space for stuff. Needs oil after a 1,000+ miles. Less than 50,000 mi on vehicle and I am on my third right rear tire. Subaru now requests an alignment after 10,000 mi. My dealer has been fine - not Subaru of America. Before buying check concerns online and CEO apology from Japan.
