The best car i ever owned
I bought this car when i was a kid it was the best thing i ever did. This car was awesome. In the end it had some electrical problems but no matter what it always ran great. I never in the 8 years that i owned it did i put more than $1000.00 into it, including normal maintenance. It was absolutely great in the winter. Eventually i bought a grand prix for more room. I will always regret giving up the best car i owned to my husband to derby, but it took 3rd place. Overall i absolutely loved this car. The electrical problems i had were the abs system, the heater switch which was ran by a switch under my dash. Overall if you can find a sunbird in good condition buy it.
Good Car
No problems with the car, 3.1L V6 is nice and strong, sounds really good when you step on tha gas!
Looks good, runs horrible
When i received this car, it had 73K miles on it. Over the four years i had it, i replaced the engine TWICE, the heater core three times, heater hoses every month, and replaced the manifold system three times. Another problem I had was that it over heated every other day in a Pennsylvanian summer. The interior dash separated from the radio set-up but aside from that, the interior was fine. It handled well and the frame was like a rock but it was everything under the hood that caused problems.
Enjoy Sun!
Only fun with 3.1L V6 engine and top down. Great look and cheap to buy. Good resale value in spring.
Not too bad, but can't trust...
My Pontiac Sunbird was purchased used a few years ago, and we've only had problem after problem. You name a part, and it's probably gone out and been replaced. Also, no matter what we do, the stupid thing always over heats if driven for over 45 minutes in town. It works fine for trips to the store or church, but that's about it. If given a choice, don't get this car.
My first car
My sunbird has since died but for the 7 or so months I had it it was my pride and joy. It was a 5 spd manual which made it lots of fun, with a 3.1 v6. Not much power. Anyway the thing did burnouts like no other. I only had a few problems like the clutch going (my bad) and the alternator. In the last few months it got probably twenty to the gallon but before that it got 30 to 35. This car was my second life
Pretty Good Car
This is a pretty decent car. The cheapest car with a V6 that we could find for my then girlfriend, now wife. We've put over 85,000 miles on it since purchased at two years old. Besides normal maintainence, we've replaced the alternator, battery, and some sensor that I forgot the name of. The alternator and battery went out rather early (around 60K miles), but otherwise it has run well.
Good car
I got this car at an auction and it had over 140,000 miles on it. it ran great! is a great car for the money. the trans is giving me problems now but i got this car for $275. I've had some brake problems but i got a good guy to work on it. as long as you put the work in, it'll treat you right.
Best car ever owned
I have never had such a great car. Had tranny rebuilt and not a problem since. Moved from central WI to SW OH and road trip was awesome. Smooth sailing all the way. Back of car caught on fire due to bush near car and the car still started up and only burned back right side. It keeps on ticking. Looking to sell now. Hoping to find another just like it.
Still Awesome @ 140k miles!!
I purchased my fully loaded Sunbird SE 3.1L-v6 in '96 when it had 30k miles. It now has 140k miles and it's been an awesome car. I get awesome acceleration from stoplights and for passing; car also has a very smooth ride and great handling. Overall, this little car has been very good to me. So good to me that when I went looking for another car a couple of years ago, I ended up keeping my Sunbird because nothing else performed as well. The name of the game, boys and girls, is maintenance. Keep up with your oil changes and transmission fluid changes and the other basic maintenance and chances are high your vehicle will do well.
I love my Sunbird
This car was my first, so that I could commute to college. I bought it in 2003 with 77,000 miles on it, and it still runs great. I like how roomy the driver's seat is, because I am a tall woman, and I sometimes feel cramped in small cars. It has never not started up for me, even in the below 0 Illinois winters. Very reliable car. The engine runs a little rough, but every mechanic that has looked at it says that it's in good condition. I had to have a valve job done on it, but that's to be expected with age. I would probably keep driving it for a a few more years, if I hadn't been rear-ended, smashing in the trunk. Insurance called it a total. I was kept safe, though, so that's a plus.
Best car i ever owned
drove the car into the ground someone rear ended me or id still have that car it had 99k miles on it
Good car!
I have owned this vehicle for 3.5 years. In terms of power, you get enough with the v6 engine. Looks are awesome too! However, this car is terrible on gas, especially if you have a 'lead right foot'. Reliability is above average and repairs are cheap. Overall the Sunbird is a great car to own, especially for 1st time buyers.
damn good car
got this car when i was sixteen and im now 20 and it is still kicking. It has about 170,000 on it plus miles put on when the odometer was squirrely. replaced the tranny at around 140k, but its been running strong since. noticeably weaker acc. but overall, it will get you where you need to go with the reliablity you need and the gas mileage you crave.
Reliability
Great car, V6 5 spd is a whole lot of fun to drive. Car is reliable and great to drive. Wish they still made them! Could be better on gas, but is probably mostly my fault, the car just sounds great going through the gears!
relibility
I have to say this with a heavy heart because the other day I had a truck w/ trailer backed into my Sunbird causing more damage to it than the car is worth.I don't agree. I have had this car for 8 years. It has 170,000 miles on it. Not 1 time in the 8 years has it EVER left me sitting on the side of the road. It has been in some rough conditions& always come through. I don't think I could have found a better car. For the most part the only routine maintance was ever needed. Even with the damage done from the truck I was still able to drive it away. How many people can say that about their car?
A Very Good Economic CAR
Work and drive very good, cool design, high economical, with good manteniance it will work forever. Decent Power for a 4 cil car. I recomend to all as a first car.
Driving History
Purchased the car with 11,000 miles on it. One person driver in the 14 years I have owned the car. One wreck hit from the back by a van. The car was not totaled. Repaired very little damage for the size of the car compared to the size of the van that hit the care. Hit from the side not very hard damaged the door. Repair service could not find a door but did some repair. The total miles 130,000.I love the car and would drive it until it fell apart. Has excellent hear and air. Drives wonderful in bad weather.
Best car ever
I love my sunbird. My grandma gave it to me it was pos when i got it and even bigger one now. Once i put a good battery in it never let me down. I take around the farm and gravel roads. Almost never lets me down. Buddies and i rolled it and filled back over drove it home and put a roll cage in it.

It's a tank, heavy metal
2.0l automatic 1st gear at 44 mph. 2nd at 80 mph, and in 3rd flies. I run vs modern 2.0l cars and wins, only with 2 valves per cylinder. Good comfort ride at circuit and mpg. Fun to drive, good a/c. My best car.

Almost a quarter million miles!
My sunbird has 228,000 miles and doesn't use a drop of anything, runs great, is a fun car to drive, has the 3.1 v6...gets a legit 25 mpg and has plenty of power.
My little Sunbird
My car has been really good to me. At 8 years old, I have only had minor repairs, such as A/C, a little engine oil leak, and replacing hoses and belts, like any other car. It may not be the smoothest, fanciest car, but I can always depend on it. I'm very happy with my car.
No complaints
I bought my 5 spd 1994 Sunbird nearly 6 1/2 years ago. I have put 136,500 miles on it since I bought it. I have no complaints about it other than mine seems to be rusting at an extremely faster rate compared to other Sunbirds I see around. My mpg is approx. 30/38. It seems that the fuel effiency has actually improved. Outside of normal things that need replacing with all cars (brakes, tires, spark plugs, etc.) the only thing out of the normal I have had to replace was the altenator 4 years ago. Everything is original.
fun little car, bad little engine
I bought the car with 74K miles on it, so I expected some problems, but the seller assured me that she'd taken good care of it. Yeah right! First month the alternator, then the valve gasket, TWICE! then the brakes, (disks and rotors), then a bunch of hoses, the temp sensor, and gauge, and finally the radiator. All this within 6 months and 6,000 miles, finally the it would just quit in the middle of the highway, I'd wait 5-10 minutes, then I'd start it back up and it go for a bit longer, the mechanic told me to stop using the a/c so I did all summer and died of heat. I finally sold it for $2300 with 87K miles.
Great Car
I have had my Sunbird since 1995. Only 78,000 miles on it. Rusting out inside the doors and dash is staring to separate from frame (possibly from heat exposure). No major problems, just general maintenance with age, hoses, belts, etc. Did replace raditor but that was due to a rock. Had one problem under warranty with power window motor.
Pontiac Sunbird Review
One of the reasons I really like my car is that fact it goes so well in snow and ice, My drive way is up hill one time on my way up it I stopped just to see if it would go up it from that piont on the hill and went right on up. another reason is it is a decent performer (of course it's the optional 3.1 V6). The only problem I've had with it is every time I go to get out of it the door is always locked ( the doors lock automaticlly when the car is put in drive and unlock when the car is turned off) my driver side power lock broke from everyday wear and tear.
Not too bad
I really haven't had too much trouble with this car, except for some usual things brakes, battery, and i will need tires in a couple months. My dash is also "shrinking."
Glad I Bought It.
Bought this car new in 94. Has been a great little car in spite of Consumer Reports poor rating of it. Only real problem with 76,000 miles on it is an unreliable tachometer. Have heard of trans problems with 3.1 V6 engine and have actually experienced problems with my other car that has 3.1 V6 automatic. For a brief spell, wouldn't down shift from drive when exiting the freeway or quick stops for heavy traffic. Would actually die and had trouble getting it to stay running when shifting back into drive....it would die. Starting out in first gear got it going again. I've heard it's an easy fix.
A Bad Idea
I drove my Sunbird for over 3 years and kept hoping that I would eventually stop having to fix stuff. My air conditioning and heating went out immediately, had problems with brakes, a melted piston, and have had 2 blown head gaskets. In addition, their has been an increasing amount of rust around my doors. I only have 102,000 miles on it and it is now completely useless in my driveway, despite my constant attempts to keep it as maintained as possible. I wouldn't advise purchasing a Sunbird to anyone.
Good Car
Bought this car for my daughter in 01. Great runner and she beat the heck out of it. The clutch finally went and is not worth fixing. I'll miss this car.
Super sunbird coupe
I got this great car since 2002,V6 automatic transmission, runs like new. I drive it every day without problems. The trans was fixed just one time, but that is to be expected with age. Very reliable car. I will keep driving it for few more years. I really love the interior and exterior design. I feel safe every time I drive it. The interior is comfortable. The alternator was changed once and the battery was replaced two times, also the DIS (DISTRIBUTION IGNITION SYSTEM).
Nice LOOKING car...
Well, I LOVE the way it looks, both on the interior and exterior, but... I've had waaaaay too many problems w/ it. Shortly after I purchased it at 98000k mi's the tranny every so often wouldn't downshift into first when I went to stop. Now it's ALL the time, if I ride in 3rd for awhile or I get abover 50MPH. Stuck throttle valve in the tranny, and it's gonna cost close to a GRAND to fix. I only paid 3200 for this car, and haven't had it even 2 yrs yet, and I'm havin' these problems. If you're lookin' into one of these... get a 5spd, I've seen a lot of places that the trottle valve is a common problem!
This car is awesome
94 Pontiac Sunfire was my first car it was great for a learning vehicle I'll never forget the day I jumped the railroad tracks, I'm surprised I cleared that ambulance, but it landed great and I got to drive away from the scene of the accident. Good Times
What a bad car!
I don't think I could make a car any uglier, of any less quality build, or any less fun! Leave it to Pontiac to make a car that won't comfortably seat anyone over five feet tall yet weighs over a ton! Most of that fun-sapping weight probably comes from the ugly plastic ridges all over this monster of a vehicle!
Unreliable Junk
I received this car for free or else I would have never bought it. Used for about 7 months - did ok. Driving through the mountains it sounded like it was dying but it got me where I needed to be. Gas mileage OK, not great. I had it sit for about a year and it got filled with water - something was leaking had to tear out the trunk material. Next year the alternator broke, battery replaced, starter replaced, serpentine belt broke, brakes replaced, and finally the tranny is going at 223000 km. Would never buy a pontiac again.
car
its a good car and good fuel econonmy
Sunbirdlier
Well i got pulled over for for spinning my tires in a 4cyl. sunbird you can't even do a burnout. But i love the car and i just bought another one 1991 sunbird convertible.
