The 2023 Polestar 2 is a smart pick for a small, upscale EV. It's comfortable and fun to drive around turns. It also has a generous amount of cargo space. The main downside is that it doesn't have as much maximum range as some rivals.

Overview

Tesla's Model 3 is understandably a popular choice for EV shoppers, but there is another option if you're searching for a small electric car: the 2023 Polestar 2. Similar to the Model 3, Polestar 2 offers both single and dual electric motor configurations. The single-motor model has more potential range, while the dual motor trades some range for quicker acceleration. Polestar is the all-electric offshoot brand from Volvo, and the 2 shares much of its EV tech and underpinnings with the Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV.

The Polestar 2 debuted for the 2021 model year, and the 2023 model benefits from numerous updates. The Long Range Dual Motor version gains 11 miles of driving distance on a full battery, now offering an EPA-estimated 260 miles between visits to a charging station. Get the optional Performance Pack, and this version of the car now adds 68 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque for an impressive total of 476 hp and 502 lb-ft. For 2023, Polestar also adds the BST Edition 270, a limited-edition trim that ups the performance ante with hardware upgrades and a tougher exterior look. Polestar will build just 270 units globally, making it the rarest Polestar model to date.
Fresh wheel designs, paint colors and interior materials are available, including a new premium leather upholstery upgrade that also equips the Polestar 2 with ventilated front seats for the first time. In addition, the Plus Pack now includes a more advanced air filter for keeping unwanted particulates out of the cabin. Finally, the heat pump included in the Plus Pack now operates over a wider range of temperatures to help negate the driving range losses observed in cooler weather.
Polestar knows the field of similarly sized and configured EVs is growing by the day, and Tesla is no longer the only source of competition. The changes for 2023 certainly help the Polestar 2 stay near the top of our rankings for best EVs. We drove the 2023 Polestar 2 on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8/10
How does the Polestar 2 Single Motor drive? For the most part, we like the way the Polestar 2 drives, no matter how many motors it has. Single-motor models are front-wheel-drive. Acceleration, unfortunately, is underwhelming. Our test car needed 7.2 seconds to get from 0 to 60 mph. That's about 3 seconds slower than the Polestar 2 Dual Motor and still off the pace of single-motor rivals such as the Tesla Model 3.
Elsewhere, the Polestar 2 shines. Its steering may not have quite the quick and immediate snap of the Tesla's, but it zips around turns with confidence. When you just feel like cruising, the Polestar is a smooth operator, delivering the easy and quiet acceleration we've come to expect from an EV. Emergency braking is trouble-free, with short distances, and the Polestar 2 offers easy one-pedal driving. Lifting off the accelerator brings about strong regenerative braking to slow you down, so you don't need to use the brake pedal for most situations.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the Polestar 2 Single Motor? Polestar has done an excellent job of making the 2 comfortable. The ride is compliant without being overly soft, and overall the car is smoother over bumps than some Teslas we've tested. It's quiet, too, with only a mild amount of wind and road noise apparent at highway speeds. The front seats have enough cushioning and support to make long drives comfortable.
All Polestar 2 models come standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, and our test vehicle was equipped with heated front and rear seats. The climate control system works quickly, though some may not like that the controls are tied entirely to the touchscreen.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The Polestar 2 uses a Google-based touchscreen interface that's reliable and easy to use. Earlier iterations of this system could be a little buggy, but it seems as if Polestar has fixed the issues. Most of the other controls are straight from sister company Volvo and require some time to get familiar with. That includes the window switches, steering wheel and turn signal stalks.
The Polestar 2 isn't a large car, but it provides a decent amount of space for both front and rear passengers. The car's small size makes getting in and out of tight parking spots relatively easy, though we wish the doors opened a bit wider for easier entry and exit. Visibility is aided by relatively large side windows and mirrors. The rear window is narrow, however, so we're thankful for the standard surround-view camera system.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? There are quite a few advantages for this Android-based touchscreen, such as over-the-air updates (it automatically updates just like your smartphone to get the latest software and features) and Google Maps-based navigation. It's all straightforward and works more like a smartphone than most other systems. There isn't much to it right now, but it has the ability to add apps from the Google Play store. As for smartphone integration and projecting your phone's apps into the touchscreen, Apple CarPlay comes standard. Android Auto isn't yet available, which seems odd given that it's a Google-based system. Our test car had four USB-C ports and the available wireless charger.
Voice controls work well, another benefit of the Android software. In addition to entering an address or adjusting the climate control, you can ask for the weather or have the car tell you a joke. Our test car had the available Harman Kardon audio system upgrade. Sound quality is fine though nothing exceptional. We'd expect it to have more audio clarity at higher volume.
The Polestar 2 is available with a full suite of advanced driver aids, no surprise for a company that was spun off from Volvo, an automaker known for its safety. There are quite a few standard features like collision avoidance and lane departure warning, though some more advanced systems like adaptive cruise control are tied to certain packages.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The Polestar 2 has both a hatch and a small front trunk. The latter, at 1.3 cubic feet, isn't useful for much beyond a small item or two. The rear is a different story, with a deep cargo area that seems larger than its official 14.2-cubic-foot capacity would suggest. That's more space than the Tesla Model 3, though the Tesla frunk is more usable. The hatchback-style opening makes loading cargo fairly easy, and the 60/40-split folding seats open up the area further. That said, it offers far less cargo space than some similarly priced EVs such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. The Polestar 2 does have a 2,000-pound factory tow rating, which isn't a lot of weight, but some rivals aren't rated to tow anything.
Small-item storage isn't so great. The center battery tunnel cuts into space that would otherwise be for small-item storage. Cupholders are concealed under a sliding and folding armrest, so you have to choose between drinks or an elbow rest. Most other cubbies are modestly sized.
Got kids? The rear seat has Isofix anchor points located under plastic tabs. Most child safety seats should fit OK, though installing a rear-facing seat will limit how far back you can scoot the front seats.

Range and Efficiency
6.5/10
How economical is the Polestar 2 Single Motor? The Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor, which is what we tested, has an EPA-estimated range of 270 miles. That's right on par with the base Tesla Model 3 but short of what the EPA says you can get from the Model 3 Long Range or single-motor versions of the Ioniq 5 and Mach-E.
But we do our own EV range testing here at Edmunds, and we were pleasantly surprised when the Polestar 2 Single Motor exceeded its EPA estimate, driving 288 miles on a single charge on our real-world EV range test.
As far as efficiency goes, this Polestar is estimated to consume 31 kWh of electricity for every 100 miles of travel. In charging back to full after our EV range test, we calculated a marginally more efficient rate of 30.2 kWh/100 miles. The Polestar trails most of its competition in efficiency, but given the relatively low cost of electricity compared to gas, the monetary differences won't be a big difference in your monthly budget.

Value
7/10
Is the Polestar 2 Single Motor a good value? Polestar borrows a lot from sister company Volvo, giving it a distinctly European look and feel. The interior is stylish and simple, though the sea of black surfaces can be a bit drab after a while. All of the materials, even the plastic parts, have a more premium look and feel than what you'll find in a Tesla. But that feel will cost you, and the Polestar 2 doesn't fare well when it comes to cost. It has one of the highest base MSRPs in its class and doesn't come as well equipped or offer as much range for the price.
Part of that premium price does include a decent warranty and some other ownership benefits. Polestar's four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and eight-year/100,000-mile battery warranty are pretty standard for the class, but it provides two years of free fast charging at Electrify America (150 kW for 30 minutes per session). Polestar also includes roadside assistance for four years/50,000 miles.

Wildcard
8/10
For maximum fun, you'll definitely want to get the Polestar 2 Dual Motor. The Single Motor version isn't as quick as we expect a luxury EV to be, and that saps some of the joy from an otherwise enjoyable driving experience. Stylewise, the Polestar 2 is a bit of a sleeper in our opinion. Badge (or lack thereof) aside, it doesn't look all that much different than a Volvo sedan. We think the car's style will age well, but it's not a head turner.
2023 Polestar 2 trim level differences
The Polestar 2 is a small hatchback sedan that comes in your choice between the Long Range Single Motor or Long Range Dual Motor version. Both have a 78-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a similar feature set, so going with the Dual Motor primarily gets you quicker acceleration. There's also the new BST Edition 270 that's based on the Dual Motor. Feature highlights include:
Which 2 trim does Edmunds recommend?
On paper, the Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor seems like the pick. Its EPA-estimated range is much better than the dual-motor, but Edmunds' testing showed that the two vehicles had nearly identical real-world electric range. Given the small price bump and significant performance advantage, we actually think the Long Range Dual Motor is the Polestar 2 to get.

2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor 4dr Hatchback AWD (electric DD)
Reviewers seem confused on whether or not they think the Polestar 2 is beautiful. The ‘truth’ is that it’s one of the most attractive cars on the road today and will turn heads everywhere you go. The styling is unique, but does not scream, “I’m an EV!” I love the discrete badging that causes onlookers to scan the car like they’re admiring a work of art in a gallery. The interior and … controls are simple and well thought out, except for the cup holder. Storage isn’t great, but it’s not terrible either. The hatchback, folding seats, and flip-up grocery organizer are as practical as it needs to get for a small car. And although the Polestar 2 is small, it’s certainly not light at ~4700 lbs. Yet it hustles its weight through turns admirably and always feels planted and nimble. Acceleration is forceful but smooth, and available instantly whenever you need it. Coming from a turbo 4 cylinder car will have you thinking you’re in a space ship. One pedal driving is perfectly executed and also adjustable. The ride is comfortable but firm and road/wind noise are not too obtrusive at highway speeds. So far range has been more than comfortable for me and the free Electrify America charging has been consistently easy and fast. My battery consumption averages 25-32 kWh/100 mi which is slightly more efficient than the EPA rating. I also charge at home on a 110V outlet which gives 25-40 miles range overnight. I plan to install a 220V outlet to fully charge the battery overnight. Some minor tech complaints involve the iPhone app disconnecting, or the Android system in the car occasionally loosing LTE connection and needing to be reset. The seat senses your weight and that’s what turns the car on, but I also wish there was a way to leave the car on without being in the seat. As for the quality of the car, I have only a few gripes with some minor rattles in the interior and the overuse of shiny black plastic and scratches easily. Still, this car feels more luxurious and better-built than my BMW, and in a delightfully different Scandinavian style.

2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor 4dr Hatchback (electric DD)
I have a polestar 2 2022 long range single battery with pilot plus bought brand new at the time. Initially I loved it the drive, the features. Until the 1 year mark the only issues I had was with the service stations. The communication with them was terrible and with customer service. I had bought warranties on everything and there was a bit of back and forth when I needed windshield … and tire changed; eventually they honored my warranty. After the 1 year service I don't know what happened but we had so many issues with the IHU. We had the headlight system shut down on us, some ghost breaking, the black screen of death, our center tablet would turn off when driving. This all escalated and service center kept saying they couldn't recreate the issue. This escalated until the system didn't notify that the trunk had opened and we were reversing in our garage and the trunk dented. Polestar finallay switched out the IHU system but wouldn't repair the dent saying they couldn't recreate the issue. They sent our car back without a seatbelt latch for the passenger side seat so we drove back from the airport without a seatbelt. Since recieving it back we're having issues with a clicking noise from the front driver wheel, and the AC being on and blasted really loudly but not actually cooling. We're looking into Lemon law and buyback which is saddening because that first year I loved the car. But we've had so many issues - i think it has more to do with the service station IDK what they did. I would love to replace with another polestar that is working and has none of these issues but definately scared especially due to the safety issues. The headlight issue and ghostbreaking happened on the freeway.

2021 Polestar 2 Launch Edition 4dr Hatchback AWD (electric DD)
I was sold in about an hour of learning about this vehicle. There was a bit of influence with my well maintained 2017 330 getting serviced yet again..The simple and easy to use infotainment had me at “hello”. I already ask google questions using my google hub in the house, why not ask google questions in my car?
Acceleration is more than sufficient. The one pedal drive takes a bit to … find the most comfortable setting, but we are best friends now.
I was concerned about the open glass roof for sun glare, I forgot that it was even a concern after the first ride home. I have yet to adjust the manual dampeners, it does ride a little stiff on the bumpy roads in my neighborhood. I was told I get one free adjustment from the service center. This car just makes sense, full electric, easy to drive, easy to enjoy the ride!
Love my Polestar 2

2021 Polestar 2 Launch Edition 4dr Hatchback AWD (electric DD)
5000 trouble free miles 4 months into ownership. Love the Android OS. Great acceleration and handling. Don't need to pay attention to a center tablet with many sub-menus ala Tesla. Voice control and recognition is about flawless. Interior with Nappa leather is a great place to be. Performance pack allows you to manually adjust the Ohlins Dampers from comfort to track. Breaks on … Performance pack are phenomenal, but rarely used as one peddle driving is what I use. Vivaldi browser and other apps keep coming, OTA performance upgrade will be available at a cost for those wanting a little more oomph on the dual motor. Price is good for what you get. Looks great.
