I really enjoy this car. I had a 3000GT in college, gave it to my brother and now 5 years later I purchased another. I really enjoy just about everything about the car. If able ensure you have records of all the maintenance done to the vehicle. It seems as if you can't fix anything on this vehicle for less than $1,000 unless you can do it yourself (engine has to be pulled to do almost anything). That said, if you can find a good one with paperwork showing the 60K and 120K (if required) go for it! Something to look out for is for 2nd gear synchro's tend to wear out. Fixable, but again about $1,200. Who ever said that they can fix one for under that did it themselves or never owned one.

Second Mitsubishi 3000 GT I've owned. The body is beautiful, slick and aerodynamic. The interior panel with amazing display. More fun to drive than my other 2 newer and more expensive vehicles.

Great Machine

Mits came up with a solid winner with this car. Even though it is a little heavy with AWD and all wheel steering, acceleration is fierce at 5.3 sec/>60 mph. The VR-4 is well built and very dependable. I bought mine new and has 71,000 miles now. Although the car is expensive, you get more than you paid for. Even in wet weather, the car never fish tails or slips its tracking around corners, thanks to AW steering. Yes, the rear wheels turn up to 15 degrees in proportion to the front wheels steering. The 320 HP rating can be increased relatively cheaply w/intake and exhaust mods to 400 HP!

VR-4, A greats sports car for all season

This is my 2nd VR-4, having previously owned a 93 Dodge Stealth RT only to trade it in on this VR-4 when it reached 110,000 miles. I'm up to 92,000 on this machine and it's been every bit as great as my Stealth. New 18 inch wheels with high performance tires on this model not so great in snow (live on steep hill in New England) so have backup 17 inch wheels with snows for winter, making perfect year round sports car. Great performance & reliability (one of the few reliable sports cars). Totally predictable handling under all circumstances (have had on track at Watkins Glen). Absolutely no problems over two cars and now 200,000 miles plus combined.

Not as pleased

I agree with most of what has been posted regarding the reliability and handling. Pick-up kind of lags though. Suprisingly, I really don't like driving it too much-I prefer to drive my 4Runner! I'm 6' and I feel too tall for this car. It's hard to get in and out of, the roof is too low, and the visibility out isn't great-especially when you shine up the dash. It reflects into the windshield. Also many of the interior plastic bits have broken. I mainly am displeased with the interior. Outside it looks pretty sharp.

I bought my 1996 black 3000GT base model with 5spd and tan leather in 2004 with 62,500 miles on it for $7500 great deal and in excllent shape!! Its fast and reliable never had a problem..when my car was bone stock except for a test pipe, I ve raced and beat my friends 1995 eclips GS-T 5 spd frontWD wtih full exhuast and intake in 1/4 and top speed!! Also raced my friends 1995 Mustang GT 5spd with exhaust and K&N filter in 1/4 and Won, and in top speed also!! So dont belive the editors review in 0-60 times this car gets to 0-60 in the 6 second area!!I killed both cars of the line. Car handles great with 97 3000GT SL 17inch rims wrapped with Toyo Proxy 4

I purchased it used, in 2000 with 44K. Not a single problem as yet. However, I do perform routine maintenance as scheduled all the time. Cockpit is a bit cramped. Back seats are for kids. Drives like a dream. Fast, head turner, stylish inside & out. Feels solidly built. I own SL model with power sunroof + power everything else. Now has 53K and still great.

This is my 2nd 3000gt base i have had. I love it!! However it feels like it holds back in performance. Don't get me wrong, it is fast enough for anyone, but i Love speed, so i crave for more torque and more hp. is a little noisy in the interior and the seats in fabric is not too classy, but overall the car is a dream machine.

Lightning on four wheels

I bought my '97 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4, in black on black, brand new with seven miles on it, when I drove it off the lot. This car, even with AWD and all wheel steering, topping the scale at 4,000 lbs, still whoops some serious booty. I disconnected the oxygen sensor and added a free breather filter. Now it routinely outruns Cobras, Vettes and 911s. I don't know how much HP this trick added, but it must be significant. The rest of the car is entirely stock, except for air horns, which I added.

I collect 2nd gen 3000GTs and currently have 4. I've only owned this 97 GT for a few years and I am still impressed with it. It had 187,000 miles on it when I bought it and it now has 234,000 miles. The only problems so far were the rear brake calipers went out on it and the exhaust downpipe. But other than that it is a great car, quick and reliable. It is a big car, though, clearing in at 7ft wide and 14ft long. It sticks to the road. It is a shame that they could not produce them cheaper to keep them around but at least they outlived their twin, the Dodge Stealth, and the over priced Toyota Supra. The 97 GT is a great car if you can find one.

With the exception of it's introductory of the 1991 model, the 3000GT VR4 has been the media's red haired step child to it's very end in 1999. Unfair to say the least. There has never been a sports car that allows the most street performance for the non-professional driver. Bottom line, many high performance cars put up incredible numbers at the track and magazine articles, but none allow the common driver to actually make use of it on the street (not necessarily breaking the law, either.)

I bought my 1997 3000GT SL brand new in August 1997 and have loved it ever since - currently have 91,000 miles on it. No major problems until 80,000 miles when the water pump went. Around 90,000 the antenna finally stopped going up/down. Other than those 2 small problems, the car has been a dream. Never had any major problems with it. Followed the owner's manual scheduled maintenance to the "T", and have never been disappointed.

I've had my 97 SL for several years now. It had 30K miles when I bought it in late 2001. Today it has over 192,000 and still runs 15.0 @ 91MPH in the 1/4mile. Not great, but not bad for a car that gets 25.5 MPG and is a V6. As long as you do the scheduled service, it will last a long time.

I've had this car for about 8 years and counting. Starting with the bad experience, I had to replace my tranny twice. Other than that, the car is great. I raced against a 2000 viper and won among other races. With the radio controls on my steering wheel, I never take my eyes off the road. It feels comfortable on the road. It pulls real hard on the take off when the pedal is to the metal. The interior is nice. I've recently upgraded the turbo, carbon fiber hood and light weight fly wheel. This car is a monster.

This car catches everyone's eye all the time. HOWEVER, it has been a constant problem. I have gone through 3 thermostats which caused the car to shift irregularly and harshly. The timing belt change at around 80k miles is $$$$$. Parts are $$$$. Keep in mind, I have the base model. I think they really left out a lot of quality on the engine as a result.

I traded in my 3000GT Base for a 97 3000GT SL in December of 2000. This Vehicle performs. Smooth ride, Handles like a dream, every option you can think of is on this car and it was all standard from the manufacturer. Excellent sound system for when I'm cruising long distance. I have had my share of sports cars and they all had some kind of MAJOR problem come up. Not this 3000GT SL. I now have 49,000 mile on this black beauty and she still looks brand spanken new, inside and out.

They stopped making this car - too bad! High performance, luxury, sexy styling in a two door coupe (today performance cars are either 4-door sedans, tiny roadsters or underpowered coupes like the Monte Carlo)...also VERY reliable. What's wrong with todays consumer - in my youth 4-door cars were for "dorks".

I use the car for commuting. Its 5M transmission and 222HP engine provide good performance. It definitely is not a dragster, but it is fast and sure-footed. It handles well under all weather conditions, including snow. I recently replaced the cloth seats with leather, the factory wheels with sport wheels, and the transmission. It has required some expense to keep it running and looking well, but it seems to have been worthwhile. People admire it everywhere I go, and I enjoy driving it. After all the miles, it still has no rattles--NONE.

My 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT is my second car on this platform. First was a 1992 Dodge Stealth base model. It was the handling characteristics that sold me on these machines. The second, my current car, is the VR4. If anyone doubts how well these cars handle and perform, drive the "Tail of the Dragon" (US Route 129), between Maryville, TN and Robbinsville, NC. Just one time, and you will be hooked!

We have owned three 3000gt's so far. My husband has a gorgeous low mileage '93 vr4, we recently sold a '93 red sl and we found my '96 in Houston two years ago. I LOVE MY CAR !!! I drive 50 miles highway to and from work 4 days a week. This car handles wonderfully in bad weather. We've had very few problems with her even though she has high miles.

As the title says, you just can't buy a new car today with the level of comfort, luxury, performance, and style as the 3000GT. This is my fourth 3S platform car (3 Stealths, now a 3000GT). The first was a non-turbo 1991 SOHC model followed by three Twin-Turbo versions (1992,1991,1996). I sold my last one to buy a Porsche 911, but I just couldn't stay away from these great Mitsus! My only complaint is that the headroom is a little low with the power sunroof option. My previous Stealths were all hardtop or glass roof and had more room for my 6'2" self. Just gotta slouch a little now and keep my hair trimmed short ;)

I love this car. I drove Fiero's for year and while that was a fun car to drive this car is it's big nasty brother. When I first got it 2 years ago it took me a few days to get use to the incredible power that this car has. My car has over 250,000 miles on it and on my drive from SC to NY I hit a stretch of road that was basically 50 miles of open road with little to no traffic. I looked down and did not realize I was traveling over 100mph because the car was so smooth...Even with over 200,000 miles on it and doing 110mph the car wanted to just go faster....and I did LOL

Best GT Car I've Owned

ASb, 12/01/2021

1 of 1 people found this review helpful

This car is not a sports car, it's a grand touring vehicle. It's meant to go very fast on straight lines in all elements. I'll start with the acceleration. Stock the 1994 and up TT models do 0-60 in 4.8-4.9s and the quarter mile in 13.4-13.6@102-105mph is very impressive even now. Many owners, myself included, have run 13.2/13.3s with just a K&N air filter. It makes the Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo seem somewhat lacking in speed. The boost is very strong and pulls until redline. I didn't mod mine besides the K&N but the potential is definitely there. Handling is very good for a heavy car, but it can't be thrown around like the slower Z32 TT. It nose dives. Brakes are amazing. Interior is luxurious and modern. Not much to say about it really. Some tall drivers may think they can't fit but I'm 6"3 and I owned my VR4 for 4 years. Wish I hadn't sold it! OK

This car had always been one of my favorites since its introduction (even over the Dodge Stealth). I love to drive it and love being seen in it, let's face it, I need all the help I can get. The car I purchased has every option and performs very well for an FWD sports car. It's surprising how a few, relatively inexpensive, mods can take this car to well over 300 bhp.

My car is fun to drive and I love all the reactions I get from it and how people come up to me and ask questions about it. But the only problem i have with it so far is some pulleys and transmisson, however, the person before me raced it so it was going out sooner or later. If you get the chance to either buy one or just to drive one I would go for the VR-4 which is twin turbo AWD. Sooner or later im going to get the twin turbo in my car.
