Beautiful combined with no QC
The ride is absolutely stunning and the interior is downright beautiful. We love the tech and features... kids can’t get enough of the ambient lighting options. But there’s a catch. The build quality just plain sucks. We’re had the car for 2ish months, and it’s already spent 9 days in the shop. First, the high fan made a crazy loud noise. Then the rain sensing wipers didn’t sense rain. Now we have a window that sounds like it is going to fail when we roll it down. Also there appears to be a subtle fit issue on the rear bumper. These cars are built in the US, and I get the sense that they have no idea how to put them together. There is so much tech, and so many points of failure. I feel like we are going to have a very close relationship with the dealer over the life of this car. At least it’s pretty and drives well. Update on 1/4/2020 - Two more issues after getting the car back last week... a check engine light and a warning that the collision avoidance system is disabled because the sensor is dirty (the sensor does not appear to be dirty). A word to the wise... think long and hard before buying this car.

Hey Mercedes!
I just bought this SUV so I am just learning all it can do. The coolest thing about it is the voice-activated commands. I’ve had earlier voice-activated interfaces but they didn’t work that well. This one works. If you have an Apple you’re familiar with Siri. Here you say “Hey Mercedes”. The voice says how can I help you? You say navigate to (wherever) and the navigation routes you to (wherever). You say turn on heated seats, the car turns on the heated seats. You say call (someone in your contacts), the call calls that person. Etc, Etc. Very Cool. Six month update: I still love the car. It gets great gas mileage for a big SUV. One odd thing I could do without is when the Nav route is programmed and you come to a turn, the dash shows the view in front of the car. So the dash shows the same thing as looking through the window. It’s kinda annoying and utterly unnecessary. Just came back from a coast to coast road trip in my GLS. I still like the car, but here a a few shortcomings: Nav system wanted to route us off the interstate and through the city to put us back on the interstate?? We ended up just ignoring the nav system and continuing on the interstate. This happened multiple times. Adaptive cruise control was very aggravating. On posted 70 mph interstates, I set cruise control @ 75 mph to keep with traffic flow. The car would often catch a signal and slow to 70 mph. Additionally, car would slow around curves. Both instances very aggravating as rest of traffic continued at constant speed. Finally, the steering seemed to get squishy, or loose when the cruise control was engaged. Not sure I would get adaptive cruise control again. Positives: very comfortable ride and 26 mpg. Two year update. I still really like the ride and comfort of this vehicle. The biggest annoyance I have is the Navi guidance. It often makes nonsensical routings. I previously mentioned how it would want me to get off the interstate to go thru the city just to get back on. Another example: I wanted to find a Home Depot. It found one < 5 miles ahead on the same street I was on. The Navi wanted me to turn right, jump on the freeway, exit the freeway to put me back on the street I was already on. I ignored the Navi, just went straight down the street. I do this often and let the Navi recalculate the route from my better route. For a system that has ‘learning’ capabilities, it’s pretty dumb. Google directions is much better and gives multiple routes to choose from. Update: don’t like how message appears ‘2nd row right & 2nd row left seats not locked’ when you have the 2nd row seats down. Message appears in place of odometer read out and you have to manually toggle twice (once for each seat) every time the car is started. Update: I've owned the vehicle 4.5 years now. I really enjoy it. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a luxury SUV. I would NOT recommend getting the adaptive cruise control. I was short sighted in not getting the towing package.

GLS580 issue
Our new GLS580 with just 108 miles is back at dealer with severe heat issue in center console. So hot, we were worried about fire. Very disappointed that it is now laid up till issue is found and resolved. Driving it was great, but short lived for now sadly. Update - false alarm, it turns out second row system was set at factory on high heat and the second row vents were closed so all the heat that goes under console could not get out. Stupid problem that was easy to resolve. This is our third GLS and WOW what a difference in ride and technology!

4.74 Stars, Almost perfect, but...
Over the years, we have owned many Luxury SUVS and a few mini-vans. We purchased a 2021 GLS 450 in early November 2020. As of today, we have driven 25,402 miles! That's not a typo. In a very short period of time, we have discovered the strengths and weaknesses of the GLS. The strengths: 1. Overall comfort, especially the front seats, is awesome. 2. The added massaging seats is a nice option (get it, you won't be disappointed on long trips). 3. The ride is smooth on the highway and around town; however, I prefer to use the individualized setting option for the sports suspension on the highway to firm up the ride, otherwise it can be a tad floaty. I prefer a stiffer, more controlled ride. 4. Passing is done with ease at speed; however the 450 holds gears a bit long when rapidly accelerating. It eventually finds its place after a brief struggle. Not bad, but not perfect. After driving 25K in a very short period of time, I would like MB to strongly consider improving a few areas in the cabin: 1. The cell phone ports (only usb c type) must be better placed. They are extremely difficult to plug cords into, plus need some type of ambient lighting to see at night. The wireless charging pad is a pain in the rear to use with a case on a telephone. The space is extremely tight. This must be corrected at some point. The power outlet in the second row is horribly placed. In fact, MB get a F- for its placement, and another F for the amount of space allocated for any charging bases larger than standard size. Just the worst of anything we have ever owned. Outside of these minor issues, my wife wishes MB would add a place for cellphones besides the cupholders or wireless charger area. This is an obvious deign oversight. Second row comfort in the captain's chairs is good, but I would strongly considering getting it with the bench in the future for the center armrest. Although the captain's seats are comfortable, again MB needs to add more places for storage. The third row works for smaller adults and children. We occasionally use it, it works for the occasional trip when are children are traveling with us. The real trick is placement of luggage; three suitcases and a duffle is tight - this requires folding one of the third row seats flat. Although not ideal, it works. For ultimate convenience, I would suggest either a Cadillac ESV or, bite my tongue - a fully loaded Chrysler Pacifica. Having owned both these other vehicles, I can say luggage space is rarely an issue. This leads me to my final thoughts on the GLS, I really like it a lot, its almost perfect except for the few issues I outlined. If MB can address the charging issues, phone placement issues and tweak the trans on shifting on the middle range when accelerating, it is hands down a superior SUV for long trips, daily comfort and drivability around town. It feels rock sold on the highway and does extremely well in rain. If you desire luxury, a very solid feeling ride, solid handling and decent MPG (I'm averaging about 23 MPG) I highly recommend the GLS.

No issues first year
Bought the 580 version fully loaded. Have about 12,000 miles on it, with no real issues. Had to top off coolant, and replenish cabin fragrance. Delivers on interior , versatility and quiet ride. Only nit I would have is ride quality over choppy road. The E-Active body control is suppose to scan road and adjust accordingly. My old GL was as smooth, without the $6,500 option. That said, curve mode probably makes it worth it. Ding one star for ride quality.

Windshield wipers auto does not work, Trying to get into Neutral takes an act of god, easy trunk kick function doesn't work, trunk button you have to hold down & that doesn't guarantee trunk is closed, slowing down breaking is very jerky, map shuts down for days, center mouse pad too sensitive, the safety hatch feature never worked. Been in shop 5 times since December. Cost $97k. Look for another vehicle, not worth the headache.

Plastic parts that easily break....
1. Rear seat stuck on day 1. In repair for 7 days 2. Hood latch broken on day 1. In repair for 7 days. 3. Coolant alarm went off on 3rd day. In repair for 1 day 4. 2nd row center console latch broke after 1 month. Still waiting for parts since 2 months ago. 5. Dealership (Mercedes Benz of Walnut Creek CA) was not forthcoming when I got delivery. Although the price was similar, the car sold to me was missing a couple of items I special ordered. I trusted they would tell me if my order wasn’t met. So if you custom order from this dealership, make sure you run through your checklist before signing. I made a mistake of trusting them to tell me it was incomplete.

Superb
Struggled with finding a replacement vehicle for our beloved 2013 Toyota Highlander that took the brunt of abuse from the dual kid booster-seat phase of our family life. Since we had bought the Toyota, I bought a CPO 2014 E350 sedan that we’ve had now for 4 years. The E350 was my first MB and has been a dream to own. So MB was at the top of my list for the Toyota replacement. Given cost, we shopped everything under the sun from $100k down. At the end of the day, only the 2020 GLS in second-row bench seat configuration would do. Nothing could match it in an overall satisfaction category. We now have nearly 20k miles on it, and have zero complaints. It’s a dream to cruise down the highway in, it’s super easy to navigate the Costco jungle, and with the combination of the turbo and 48v mild-hybrid system the 3.0 I-6 engine is deceptively powerful, there is truly 0% need for the V8 unless of you just want to have it. But note, one of the differences is weight between the two engines. The I6 configuration feels almost tossable and easy, not lumbering and heavy, even though it is a very heavy vehicle. We average about 24mpg fully loaded down on the highway. We had one “assembly” issue with the drivers window motor. But considering the car is totally new from the ground up, and the boys and girls in Alabama were trying to build them during a freakin’ global pandemic lockdown - I cannot complain as MB fixed it with absolute ease. I also have one of the first Mk7 VW GTI’s produced from the Mexico factory (2015) and it too had a couple of minor glitches to correct, which they did early and it’s been perfect for 6 years and counting now. End of the day, if the GLS is in your eyesight, then it’s going to be tough to beat it. I personally recommend the 21” wheels as they really make the car look great. We’ve not had any issues with our wheels and we’ve hit some nasty potholes already. True, the factory tires (p-zero) won’t last much past 25k on normal driving, but they can now come with Michelin too, which have tread warranty coverage to 40k. We will be replacing ours with the Michelin’s this year We get compliments from many over the car. Lots of interest in it from the luxury SUV crowd, and MB fans in general. We will be having this car for a very long time because there is just nothing else out there that we like as much. The tech is great. Yeah takes a day or two to get used to it all, but once you’re past that, it’s just second nature to use it on the fly. The interior materials are superb and will clearly last a very long time, and the design is timeless both inside and out, not gimmicky or “modern for the moment”, just timeless. It’ll look fantastic and fresh in 5 years from now, not tired and overly duplicated.

Appalling
Leased from MB Manhattan in 2019. Within weeks problems emerged. Electrical most significant with warning lights, bulbs out, parts not working. After a lot of complaining they agreed to replace the car. Delivered replacement months later with center console not attached and rear seat arm rest dangling to floor. This car is worse. The entire cabin creaks and especially on drivers side. Not just a slight raffle but sounds like was in a collision and car out of whack. They have dragged us in at least a half dozen times to fix. Should not have this issue with an $85,000 suv. Now the rear passenger door is separating from the door frame. Spent enormous amount of my time to get them to agree to take the car back. Now just waiting for suv availability from another manufacture. Is it MB Manhattan or just MB? Quality and customer is a disaster, and bordering on corrupt.

The Best of All Worlds
I have tried parting with the MB GL series, but I keep getting lured back in all good ways. This is my fourth GL series (eighth MB), and not because I lack creativity or dislike change. I have researched and test driven most luxury SUVs looking for an equitable alternative, to no avail. First and foremost, no other car matches the safety features of a Mercedes Benz. Period. Other brands tend to rollout the same safety features 7-10 years behind MB. As a parent whose priority is to keep our kids safe this could well be the end of the discussion, but let’s keep going for the sake of fun. In addition to groundbreaking technology that has consistently worked and kept our family safe (Driver Assist, PreSafe, etc.), the GLS450 offers the most comfortable and luxurious ride, whether you are looking for smooth sailing or the excitement of sports cornering and braking, all adjustable via touchscreen or voice command. “Hey Mercedes” is our new “Alexa,” always ready to give guidance, change ride settings, or simply adjust the interior ambient colors to match the family mood. The new infosystem takes a bit getting used to, not because it is difficult to understand, but because there are so many options and ways to get to the information you need. What I do miss from my old GLS is the recessed sunglass holder above the rearview mirror, but based on all that I’ve gained in return, I don’t mind finding a new pad for my shades. Favorite features: safety, safety, safety. Driver Assist, Attention Assist, PreSAFE (front/rear/sound), all wheel drive, MICHELIN tires (finally!), adaptive lighting, image quality of 360 view camera and ease of use/parking. Soft door close, openness of a panorama roof and the cave feel when the roof shades are closed, no-fuss bumper to bumper warranty, same color interior headliner, reliability, service loaner. Cons: the GL is a heavy car and there is a price to pay for its “sedan-like” handling and that is wear and tear of brakes and tires. Visibility is slightly worse in MY2020, but still better than other cars and not an issue for driving safely. No sports appearance package. The verdict is still out on the captains’ chairs configuration. Electrical gremlins
We recently bought a 2021 GLS 450. The warning systems work some of the time, but not consistently. We had all the driver assist features malfunction so into the dealer. They found a severed sensor wire which Mercedes said normally wouldn't be covered (The car had 1800 miles on it), but they decided to cover it anyway. Sometimes we get an audible parking assist warning sometimes we don't. My wife managed to back it into another car and never got a warning. I understand it was her fault for relying on the back up warnings, but it is so unreliable that it is really useless. We have had multiple cars with parking assist and never had any problems. It was inspected after the fender bender by the dealer , but they couldn't find any issues. They gave us Mercedes Benz USA contact info. We have collected multiple videos of the system not working to show the Mercedes rep. When we called MB USA, they were confused as to why we were calling them and told us that there are plenty of warnings not to trust the system. Great! Does that mean we shouldn't trust the adaptive cruise or any of the lane assist features? What is the point of having these systems if they don't work. Add in to those issues the incredibly loud drivetrain (also checked by dealer, but told it was normal due to high pressure system like a diesel), I can't recommend this car. It's nice when it works, but no better than competing vehicles. Stay away.

Not good
Purchased new 2021 GLS 450 $92000, the SUV is in the shop more than in my garage. Major computer dash problems. After 4 attempts, they can’t solve the problems. MY SUGGESTION!! Stay away from the GLS 450 SUV.

12th time in the shop in 10 months since purchase
I bought a 2021 GLS 63 on 1/2/2021. Within 48 hours they sensors misfired and the car was at the service center. It took them 4 tries to fix it with the last try taking them 28 days. I got the car back and the brakes began sounding. It took 7 tries at the service center and they can’t get it right. Today the car stopped working entirely and though the battery functions worked the started wouldn’t kick in. It’s my 2nd tow, 12th service and I will never drive it again. Lemon law all the way.
Big Disappointment!!
This is my 2nd MB SUV…first was 2016 GLE 350 - I loved this vehicle. Now 2020 GLS 450 has been a very disappointing experience from dealership and vehicle performance. I have 28806 Miles and am waiting on a tow!!! Next vehicle will not be an MB. Today 45V battery not charging and upon searching; I see this has been an issue for many owners. Do yourself a favor - DON’T BUY IT! Now to figure out what I will be buying next; I can assure you it won’t be a Mercedes!

Would have kept it except….
We have owned many luxury vehicles, and traded our 2015 ML350 for the 2021 GLS450. Adored my ML - loved certain things about the GLS, but ultimately gave up on it. The good - comfort was astounding, climate control superb, technology and cameras were stellar, fuel economy surprisingly good (V8 engine and still got 21+mpg). The bad - at 800 miles would not start - spent 2 weeks in service waiting on particular part. Had to have tow-trailer take it from my street in my neighborhood. Wipers constantly “chattered”…very, very annoying especially on trips. Horrible wet, moldy odor from AC in summer that MB knows about and still forces consumer to pay $250 flushing fee. THREE TIMES to dealership for wipers, and final straw was when service tech came to me and said, “you know - you do live in a rural area…”. That’s it - I had had it. Traded immediately for a competitors model. Really truly a shame. Area dealers have shared with us that “after 50k miles MB doesn’t want to deal with you”. I traded a 2021 GLS450 in late 2023 with 8900 miles on it. I will never again deal with the condescending people at a Mercedes dealership. So sad - the product can be truly worth it’s price if the support weren’t so inferior.

Utility wrapped in Luxury
The redesigned GLS is truly a spacious, luxurious SUV. The 450 has plenty of power and refinement for totally enjoyable driving. The turning radius is extraordinary, and makes for easy parking. Drives smaller and more nimble then it’s size. So far, I’m very happy with this SUV. I upsized from an Audi Q7 and while I loved my Audi, this size was a better fit. Well done Mercedez. UPDATE: after driving this great SUV for a year and a half, I still love it. I’ve had no issues or problems and have only done normal maintenance. I’m very happy with the 450 GLS.

Avoid the 23”!! Zero customer service
Well let me tell you. I bought this ride in March 2020. I’ve put on 12,000mi (20,000km) in 6 months. The rear tires are bald, un-drivable!. Already very upset until I was given a quote for new rubber. How does $3500cdn strike you! What! At this rate I need to replace my tires twice a year for my cost of $7,000 a year in rubber But wait. I love in Canada. I need all season tires. Nope. They only make Pirelli Pzero tires for this rim. Ok. No all season. Winter tire&rim pkg. Yup. $6,000 fir a set of winters. Great deal. Don’t forget you can only drive those half the year still need to replace my Pzero’s after every summer! Ok. Let’s put the factory 21’s on it.

My favorite gas GLS yet
** Update 4/23 Well, this Mercedes is also plagued by stinky HVAC like my 2017. I am not sure why Mercedes cannot get this under control. We have owned many other makes and have NEVER had this problem with any except Mercedes. This is my third MB SUV. I previously owned a 2017 GLS450 and a 2013 GL350 diesel. I would buy another diesel if they still made them but of the gas models, this one is best. The issues I have are first, with the black plastic around the wheel wells. I hate that, it looks like something that would be on a Honda Pilot. I realize I could avoid that by getting the 580 or the AMG model but I did want to spend $30+ grand to avoid some chepo plastic, I shouldn't have to. Hopefully that goes away with subsequent models. The other issue, I had with my 2017 also, is stinky air conditioning system. Mercy, it smells like gym socks. There is a class action lawsuit for the 2017 so hopefully that will compel them to come up with a fix and apply it to the new ones too. It smells like a new vehicle when it's cool and a locker room when it's hot. An $80k+ vehicle should not have this issue. Apart from these two things, the car handles and drives great for such a big vehicle. It hauls all that we need and the V6 has sufficient power. My husband drives an AMG GLE and it's quicker but the power mine has is sufficient for me. I agree with the previous reviewer about the Driver Assistance package and the massage seats. Great additions especially for road trips. I have had it a year and it has functioned properly the whole time. If Mercedes gets rid of the black plastic and figures out how to keep their AC fresh, I will buy a fourth when I am ready for a new vehicle.

The Very Best SUV ride available
We purchased a 2020 GLS450 when they first came out and drove it for almost two years. The tech took a little while to get used to and the stereo was a little disappointing given it was a Burmester. The ride was outstanding with really comfortable seats. Zero issues with the vehicle other than a the proximity for the key didn't always work and the nav would route you poorly. The GLS has one of the best 3rd row seats available for space without being an enormous vehicle. We thought we wanted an upgrade and my wife wanted something where she was up higher with a better stereo. We traded ours in on a Range Rover Supercharged. What a mistake! Yes - we were up higher and the Meridian stereo is excellent. That’s about it. The seats were uncomfortable and the ride was poor in comparison. On top of that, nothing worked reliably! Like nothing - the screens would lock up continuously and one time the car wouldn’t start at all. The service at Land Rover was horrible. They couldn’t get us a loaner for 60 days! Needless to say, the Rover lasted 18 days and we decided to go back to the GLS and purchased a 2021 that was optioned significantly better than our first and it really makes a difference. A couple of highly recommended upgrades to get. 1. You must get the Acoustic Comfort Package. Don’t buy this vehicle without it. Absolutely worth the cost. It enhances the stereo and the interior is like a vault. Very little outside sound. 2. Get the all leather multi contour seats with massage - they are fantastic 3. Get the Driver Assistant Plus Package - it’s incredible and works very well. It has to be one of the safest adds available. It will recognize if you fall asleep or pass out, pull over safely, turn the hazards on and call 911! 4. HUD - one of the best Heads Up Displays available There are significant improvements made in 2021. Everything works better. The nav is better, the cameras are out of this world and all of the tech seems to work better. We couldn’t be happier to be back in a GLS and Mercedes has really outdone themselves with this SUV. It’s hard to explain but the ‘21 just works better. First year models are always a little quirky. A word of warning. Our dealer said, like everywhere, the supply chain has been disrupted and they are only getting in low optioned GLS’s. They even had one that had zero options on the lot. The options on ours are going to be very hard to find but don’t settle and hold out for the right one. We bought it the day it arrived at the dealership and there were 5 other people in line behind us to look at it.

Loving it
It took me almost a year to make a decision on a new suv. I’ve looked at BMW, Porsche, Volvo, Audi, etc. I was paralyzed by analysis. I’m so glad I went with GLS. It’s my first time owning a MB. Even though it’s a large SUV, it’s very easy to drive. I love the comfort and the handling. MBUX is awesome. I love finding different options on it. I’m a believer in MB now.

Shopped many top brands before choosing MB. Was looking for a car we could drive 10-12 years that had a comfortable 3rd seat. This car covered all the bases: seat comfort , front and back, ease of access to 3rd row, lots of pep, awd, cabin luxury , quiet and handles like a dream. Multiple tech features literally at your finger tip are the icing on the cake.

Drives out well. Transmission is undecided 30%, of the time. Twice during highway driving releasing the accelerator the auto stop seem to engage. Gages dropped out, engine went limp. It came back to life with accelerator engaged. Rather alarming. Went to trade it MB dealer in Denver wanted another 10k for market adjustment. Got a new SVR, at msrp. MB lost another loyal customer.

What’s not to like
They finally updated the GLS class in 2020 to be the S Class SUV. It is awesome!
Forever Mercedes Benz
I bought a new 2021 GLS 450 in March 2021. 20 inch Michelin tires.. this is my 4th Merc. and the best one yet..I like the size not too big, easy to drive in town or on the interstate.. Technology is great takes 2 days to learn ..I drive in the sport setting..very nice.. my only suggestions...tighten up the suspension more and smooth out the road even more..and it should be std. Gas mileage add minimally plus two.. I drive MB because of safety and I am 74 yrs old. I need all the help I can get as the yrs roll forward...continue to keep us between the lines..p.s. my 1989 560 SL. Is still a gas to drive.. the g look s 450 is outstanding..
Beasley in a good way!
I ordered my 2021 GLS 63 AMG in November of 2020. I took delivery in May. It has been awesome. Very comfortable and extremely quick. It does not feel like a large vehicle. My biggest complaint….two flat tires. Not MB’s fault. What I like the most…….power and comfort.
