Some call the CL55 AMG the depreciation king, and if I had bought one new I might agree, however there is more to the story than depreciation. The Cl 55 AMG is FULL of technology and admittedly if you buy a bad one you will be most unhappy so how do you avoid that? Pay a couple of hundred dollars before you buy one to have it pre-purchase inspected buy a Mercedes Benz dealer. This will save you time and major grief. If the owner refuses to allow this just say goodby. If it is a price "to good to be true" it probably will need a lot of TLC. Avoid boy racer modified cars, this car needs VERY FEW mods if any at all!

A Lifetime Dream Car

2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class CL55 AMG 2dr Coupe (5.4L 8cyl S/C 5A)

I have owned many dream cars including a Ferrari, muscle cars like the SVT Mustang, classic muscle cars like the 1970 442 Olds W-30, beautiful cars like the mid-60s Corvette coupes and I can say without hesitation that the 2005 CL 55 AMG surpasses all of them in every category and I will not likely ever part with my car. I have owned it for 7 years now, my extended warranty ran out last September and I am still loving the car as much or more as the day I bought it. It is still a major head-turner every time I take it out which indicates to me that the design of the car is timeless so could be considered as "automotive art" on top of all the other benefits. Treat yourself and get one.

The Definition of an Automobile

This is flat out, undeniably, the definition of fantastic motoring. I've owned BMWs, Audis, Porsches, Japan's best, Italy's best, and even other Mercedes, but the CL55 takes the cake. The whole cake and all the frosting. Even the frosting flowers. It's great looking, comfortable, sporty, safe, easy to drive slow or fast, and goes like a hell cat with its tail on fire when summoned. If you have the cash and you're looking for the complete package, look no further than this car. No excuses and dissapointments here. You'll thank me later.

Sexy Mercedes for the Family Guy

I love this car. When I first saw one pull along side in a traffic jam back in 2002 it took my breath away. A year later I bought one, and loved it. I sold the car a few years later after being downsized (I already had an S500 that I kept), but I missed it terribly and thought it was a bad decision to let it go. So when I had the chance to buy my current one (2006 CL500 with AMG trim), with extremely low miles, I jumped at the chance. I'm a fanatic about my car and keep it garaged, only drive it locally, and keep it clayed , polished, waxed and super clean. So much so that last weekend I entered the car in the Street category at the 2016 Concours d'Elegance at Chateau Elan north of Atlanta. I had my super clean S500 entered as well, and it was sitting right next to it on the fairway. The crowds absolutely loved the CL500, especially the older guys. I always called the car a '2 door S class', because that's what it was/is. The styling is epic, and loved by everyone. People who want an SL sports model but hesitate because it is too small love the CL. It is a big 2 door coupe, and super fun to drive. Mercedes equipped the car with a really throaty sounding exhaust system. I love to go into the north Georgia mountains in the fall, roll the windows down, put the 7 speed transmission into manual shift control, and go through the windy roads shifting, turning, and listening to the mellow tones of the exhaust sounds. This is a very comfortable, very fun, eye turning drive. I don't expect to ever sell the car!

This is the best car i have ever owned and it is overall an incredible value. I bought it when it was 2 years old with 20K miles on it and I have now owned it for 10 years and put 75K miles on it. A few key points. This car is definitely an exotic in terms of handling and speed but it is also incredibly comfortable. In the 10 years i have owned it a few things have broken but there has been no major cost and it runs and looks like new. There is nothing finer than punching it from a standing start and having the supercharger wail and get you to 60 in just over 4 second. The car is my daily driver and i will own it forever. By the way, i also own a Ferrari 612 and a Porsche Macan GTS. The CL55 is by far the best of the bunch as a drivers car. The car really doesnt need any dressing up and i have kept it basically stock (which is easy since the car at the time it was made had every high tech option known to mankind) but i recently rewarded it for being so kind to me with some 19 inch Brabus wheels, really wide Michelin Super Sports and a 1.5 inch lowering kit. It looks incredible and handles incredibly and i would recommend this to everyone. Wish i had done it years ago.

I have about 150,000 miles on my CL65. I always wanted a 65 but was told not to get one because of the expense to work on. Let me tell you this is ultra reliable and way cheaper then my Ferrari. I have only had to issues in over 100K of driving. I bought it used with about 50K on it. First issue was a coil unit went out and I had to replace it. Cost about $2,500. The other issue, the ABC was drooping. The shop wanted over $3,000 to fix. I found a video on youtube and did it myself. for about $400 US. I am not very mechanical at all. It took me all day to do. But saved some bucks. Other then those two issues. The car has been a dream. I just do the scheduled maintenance and drive. New update at 185K.. Just got out of the shop for a B service about $900. They found a small leak in the cooling system and fixed that for $450. Still runs strong. Burns about 1 quart of oil per 5,000 miles. Drove it from Chapel Hill NC to California for a nice road trip. Looks like I will hit the 200K mark soon.

I recently bought an '06 CL55 AMG with low miles. It is the best looking big coupe MB has ever built, far better looking than the current body style, in my opinion. It is an absolute blast to drive... it has tremendous power and torque, faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap tall buildings in single bounds. It makes you feel like a superman driving it. The AMG seats are the best I've ever sat in, with more adjustments available than a chiropractor. The only downside to the vehicle is the gas mileage - 17 in the city, 19- 20 highway. When you pay $75 to fill a 21.5 gallon tank, it kind of hurts. Until you press the engine start button. That that big grin takes over.

This car is beautiful to look at and even more awesome to drive. It seats four adults technically, although the backseat can be a tad small. Navigation system is easy to use - not complicated at all as others have rated. It is a gas guzzler, however it is worth the extra premium gas price because the ride is awesome. I love it.I love the horsepower.I love the smell of the car, once again .This car is beautiful to look at and even more awesome to drive. Mercedes-Benz, thanks for all the hard work

This car is beautiful to look at and even more awesome to drive. It seats four adults technically, although the backseat can be a tad small for two good sized adults. I have had some minor problems with the vehicle however. Some material coming apart on the interior, a trunk lid that malfunctioned but was fixed, the door handle latch has become unattached. The response from Mercedes has been wonderful though.

My CL500 is a great car and fun to drive. Very easy on the eye. The CL is the perfect car for me and I am very happy with it. The 2007 CL is different not better looking as far as I am concerned. I just love the way the CL tracks around curves and its stability on the highway. The car is quiet, smooth, and powerful.

I have owned my CL65 for almost two years and put almost 28K miles on it during this time. What an amazing car. It is literally a perfect combination of luxury and performance. The interior is still very pleasing to the eye and touch with high quality materials and fit. I still love the elegant and classic lines of the exterior. The torque is just unbelievable. The chassis does have a hard time corralling all that power...but you learn to be judicious with when/where you prod the throttle. I have previously owned an E39 M5 and Audi RS6, and I can't imagine getting rid of the CL65. There just isn't anything out there that compares (new CL65s weigh 200+lbs more with same power).

The Flagship Coupe

Chris Thomsen, 06/11/2006
2005 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class CL65 AMG 2dr Coupe (6.0L 12cyl Turbo 5A)

The CL65 is the flagship coupe of the CL class from Mercedes Benz. The 6.0 litre V-12 Bi-Turbo engine produces and astonishing 604 hp and 738 ft-lbs of torque. The coupe accelerates from 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, making it a true 'beast' in the automotive industry. While the top speed had been electronically-limited to 155 mph, the car would be able to achieve about 200. If you take your head out from under the hood and step back you will find an array of extra modifications. These include an AMG aero-kit which include front and rear bumpers and side skirts. Mercedes was kind enough to add one of the nicest interiors that I have ever seem into this car. A race car and an everday driver, amazing.

I LOVE THIS CAR~ no so much now when it Starts braking. .. I own it now and still can not belive it. If you bought a car and wlking away from it turn around few times, and then looking at it at the reflection on the glass window...man..you know you boguht a right car. Guys, let me tell you. this car ia a WORK OF ART. IT is ART. I dont evenn want to drive it much. I can just stand there and look aat it ALL DA Y LONG and not get tired. I had Lexuses....eww....most boring cars i ever owned. I had couple dozens of Jags, i love them, but only a few of them can be called art. Other brands llike Audi, BMW, will be forgotten in a few years after you bought it. This car is 10 years old, and it turns head like a real art. this car will belong to a museum if its well taken cares of. It will represent the peack of the era on automaking.

This is without a doubt the most exciting car I have ever owned or driven. Just seeing the letters "AMG" when I get into the car every day makes me a happy commuter. I may go broke with the incredibly high fuel consumption, but it will be with a smile. Great acceleration yet luxurious enough to commute in. Easier to service and more fun to drive then the Maserati's and comparable to the DB9 (but with room for golf clubs). Much better looking then the 645i. Get it.

CL 55 review by an owner

I fell in love with this car, the handling, and the wonderfully powerful and smooth engine. I continue to enjoy the well-crafted and reliable engine (each engine is hand crafted by one person, and signed by him/her) and the excellent ride. And the car looks sharp, inside and out. But I will bot purchase another Mercedes. The "cons" are just far too many for a car that is $140K+. I average 13mpg (city driving), premium gas only. I have had to buy new tires on three occasions now (with less than 15,000 miles) They are fat tires and pick up all nails and cannot be patched. And tires are $500+ each. And reliability of non-engine components (electrical system especially) is awful.

All around beautifully designed inside and out. Very comfortable on long drives or just out for a fun spin around the block. Adequate power and great automatic shifter for extra fun on the highways. Many extra options available which I took advantage of. Includes automatic starter, AMG sport package, satelite radio, upgraded navigation and a few others. Being a huge car fan, this is THE car to drive. Luxury, sport orientated, and sophistication in one awesome package. No dissapointments for the true car driver!

Just purchased my CL 500 on my birthday 3 Oct 06 and has already fallen in love with this beauty! It is sooo sharp and sporty even though it has a sedan sort of style to it. Turns heads like carzy. Very sofisticated in its looks but modernally casual for just that every day ride. I love how it huges the road while giving that sporty. The power for this car has is awsome! . Owning now the S500 and G500 this car, the CL 500, adds alot more exciement to the driving experience. Will be owning this one and all the rest for life!

When you want to step up to this level of car you will want to make sure everything works before you buy. Make sure to get a warranty also, (just in case). If you want a car that can transport you to the middle of next week "right now" this is the car your looking for. This car can break the tires loose at eighty miles per hour. Cornering is just as capable with the ABC able to keep the car level at all times. Luxury abounds as well. Key less entry, key less start, climate control, power sunshade in rear window, leather with wood trim, heated, cooled, and massaging, sixteen way power seats that I am very comfortable in just to mention a few goodies. So far after 12,000 miles I have had one problem, the trunk not opening. Shouldn't have been a big deal but neither the key nor the electronics would open it. Unfortunately the battery went dead due to one of the trunk opening components draining it. Once all three components were changed at the dealer there have been no problems since. You will have to put in quality gas or the injectors will plug up. They only made 56 of these this year so this is indeed a rare car. I own number 14. It took me a while to figure out the number embroidered in the sun roof cover. The number is "1456". It stands for 14 of 56! To buy one of these new would have cost close to $200,000, ($178,600 base price). You can buy one for a lot less now. A bargain in my book. Another "CL55" owner told me that the CL is the best model Mercedes ever made. This model is stout and sexy, and in my opinion the best looking.

I bought this CL 65 new in 2006, the CL has never been a garage queen and has been driven quite hard for most of it's life so far. A lot of track days with fellow AMG guys, the CL has never let me down apart from getting bad fuel in New Mexico once and that screwed up my injectors...ouch! She now has over 130k miles and refuses to die, she starts on the button and purrs like a big cat until she settles down ready to drive and that's when the big smile appears on my face as I know what I'm in for.... She is completely stock with only the Kleemann chip installed which removes the red line (what red line?) and increases the BHP and Torque (as if you need any more?), max speed observed in my CL 65 was 198mph....just couldn't get her over the 200 mark!!! This model year of CL 65's can be purchased so ridiculously cheap now, prices compatible with a second hand Pick up truck!!!! My Car is probably only worth around the 15k mark...really silly! However, I'll NEVER sell my Baby, too much history and the fun still keeps coming. Not a scratch and she has everything she ever needed to be in 100% flying condition. Not too many cars around that can keep up with her, whether it's in the corners or the straightways…..Thank you Mercedes. Main buying tip for you all out there....make sure the ABC is working, check the front struts for weird looking orangy coloured rubbery powder on the top of them.....if that's all ok....buy it!!!!!!!!!

CL500 2006 -I do love the car, but

I purchased my car in 2015, I am the second owner. At purchase it had 48, 100 miles. The car now has a mere 53, 230 miles on it. I purchased it because my 1985 560 SEC ran out of useful repairs and could not pass inspection. With my CL 500 the most serious problem that I have had is now in 2023 the driver side soft assist is no longer working as designed. The part needed for the repair I am told is longer available for the left side driver door. So, I am reduced to "slamming" the door ensure the door is closed snug. I love the retractable rear window screen; love the seats, love the ABC (had that fixed this year); love the color- pewter; love the air/heat seat options. Even though I know this car is in the S Class for Mercedes I do not know why MB named it in a CL class. It is an over good car as the reviewers have stated and it is a head turner when parked or on the road. I get so many compliments on this car. It rides excellent on the highway and also around town. As one reviewer stated, this car should be placed in the MB museum when it is time to do so. I concur.

While there isn't much visual differences between the CL500,600,55 the 65 stands alone when it comes to power. The 604hp is almost too much for the rear wheels. I wish it had all wheel drive and was about 1500lbs lighter and was truly stand out that this vehicle cost close to $200K I was tempted to leave the window sticker permanently in the window. I also wish MB would not have put a governor on the vehicle it tops out at 155 where it still has plenty of room to stretch out to the 200 mark. I admit I don't feel 100% safe driving at the mid triple mark speeds b/c it is close to 6K lbs and would hate to have to try to stop or make a swerve If cash is tight go buy a BMW

The CL500 has made my wife and I feel that it has put us back in a smooth ride again it makes us feel very safe. The style is nice as there isn't a window bar betwween the front and back window giving you as close a feeling to being in a convertable. Very roomy with enough horse power to get onto a parkway that is moving at a fairly fast pace.

Excellent vehicle - luxury, sporty and powerful. Very comfortable and drives itself. Sound system is top notch. Navigation system is easy to use - not complicated at all as others have rated. It is a gas guzzler, however it is worth the extra premium gas price because the ride is awesome. Mercedes employees are very helpful and so professional. I love it.

TRADED IN A 2004 MB 500. THAT CAR WAS A DELIGHT TO OWN, BUT NOW WITH THE CL500S IT FEELS LIKE I AM FLOATING ON A SOFT CLOUD INTO HEAVEN. WISH I COULD HAVE HAD PARKTRONIC WITH IT, BUT DEALERS INVENTORY DID NOT HAVE ANY IN STOCK. AND I WANTED IT NOW, NOT LATER!

I live in NZ and have owned my cl600 (twin turbo V12) for 3 years now. I puchased it with 62000km on the clock and have put 12000kms on the clock since purchasing. After having owned many BMWs and several other high performance vehicles, Jaguars, GM,s etc and an sl500( I also have a very low mileage sl350 in the garage at the moment) I can truly say that I love this car, everything about it, it's looks, its performance, its comfort and sound system. My cl has had a rentech ecu flash and airbox upgrade, running through a stock exhaust system and dynos at around 610 rear wheel HP. It's not too hard on the gas cost but puts a big smile on my face every time I drive it, I have never owned or even ridden in a car that matches this car even though it is now 16 years old. I believe that this car is a modern day classic, that as well as being capable of extremely high performance is very comfortable and has road holding ability that is second to none. I have aftermarket 19 inch rims fitted with 265/285 nitto invo tyres and 1.5 inch body lowering links, a killer look and unbelievable performance, a car that at present can be bought for a fraction of the cost of far lesser cars that are available.

The only gripe that I have with the car is that it does not come with a manual transmission. But I'm otherwise totally floored by this car, never have I had this much fun, the car can do anything. Track days (bye bye Porsche, Ferrari, Vettes etc etc, normal drives in the mountains and eats up the highways. Comfort second to none and no noise ever! I love it and will be buried in it. One car I will never let go of. Might be expensive but you can't put a price on the smiles / mile in this car!

Second AMG car in two years good looking very fast car, a blast to drive interior not quite as comfortable as expected but good. Would take a serious look at the CL55 before spending extra money.

Got my CL55 8 years ago used with 46,000 miles. She now has approx 75,000. First year i owned herI took her to RennTech in Stuart,Fl and just had a basic tune and a few mild mods done. The AMG M113 is rated to 700hp. I’m now just under 550 but the torque is insane. Almost 600. She’s well kept and 2 tons of fun. Mine’s the rare Capri Blue. And I’ll admit- Proper maintenance isn’t cheap. ( the super charger oil is the same as Lear jet engines). But the driveline is pretty bulletproof. The ABC system is awesome- but also the Achilles heel. Pumps are expensive and hard to find- that’s why these cars sell so cheap. Not for the faint of heart. Find your real deal Mercedes mechanic first. (This is not a shade tree mechanic car). Tell them your intentions. Bring them along or bring car to them. Avoid any seller who says no to that. And realize that well kept and documented CL AMGs are over 20,000. And will climb. They aren’t for everyone- but to quote Ferris- I highly recommend one- if you have the means.
