Good midsize car but no "sports sedan"

Jay, 09/01/2019
2018 Mazda 6 Grand Touring 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

I have had the car for a couple of weeks now and while the initial drive and impressions were favorable (more like "best of the mehs" vs the Camry and Accord I drove), I just don't find it all that exciting to drive, certainly not on-par with the enthusiasm I have read about. It won't plant power well coming out of a corner which is probably the tire selection (quiet + low rolling resistance) plus the tuning of the engine (torque at low rpm). So, it wants to spin its tires on aggressive "launch" then you wind it out in search of some top-end satisfaction and it falls on its face around 4k rpm. So...now I just don't bother flooring it anymore. It doesn't beg to be driven hard. It's just...weird. Drive it normally and it is fine, but then you may as well just get the base 2.5L proven engine and get the resulting improved fuel economy. The lousy engine tuning aside, it does handle decently until 7 tenths or so then it falls apart due to its fwd-nature. So again, don't drive it hard. It's OK for sweeping corners and such but it falls apart when you ask the front tires to do too much transferring of weight. It does look nice inside and out. The interior is a nice place to spend time and has a good line-up of tech. Plenty on that in the other reviews. So, if you are shopping for the top-tier M6 (GT, GT Reserve or Signature), do it because that is the only way you can get the luxury options that you want, not because of the turbo engine. If you do want a car in this class that is enjoyable to drive hard, the Accord (2.0T) and Camry (V6) are both better.

UPDATE: 2 Years in and 2 more services with this car. Oil switch within the transmission had to be replaced. The ABS/Breaks system is faulty too. Previous: I was a Mazda fan and this is my second car. This will definitely be my last. The passenger seat didn’t heat up, I went to get it replaced , they claimed it’s by design . I had Josie coming from the center console, they claim they didn’t hear it. I took it back and they replaced parts, the noise is louder now. My microphone stopped working and car play is working. The quality of this car is a joke. Extremely extremely dissatisfied - the only good thing so far has been the interior and exterior design

This is an update to the review below. I've had my just less than 2 years now. I still really like it. I've had no mechanical problems, nor any electronic problems. My car pool buddies really like the car also. I think that as long as I treat it well, it will treat me well. I still enjoy driving it, and I love the enjoy noise when I do stomp on it. If all I do is commute, or drive on the highway, I get over 30 mpg. (I've played around a bit with octane ratings. Higher octane does lead to better highway mileage, but not enough to cover the cost. I do it for the environment.) The only drawbacks? The one that is the biggest nuisance for me is that all my favorites stations/channels have disappeared 3 times now. I believe it is tied to updates or something in the entertainment unit. It might be that once was due to disconnecting the battery for routine service. (How would I know?). The only good thing about this is I go through all the available stations and channels again, which motivates me to try something different or look for format changes. Perhaps more importantly, the paint seems susceptible to chips. We use small rocks instead of sand here. The rocks chip the paint. I bought some touchup paint to protect the metal during the winter. Finally, the Sirius reception is not quite as good as that in our Outback - it takes longer to start, and parking under an overpass is more likely to lead to an interruption. You are not going to change your own oil, unless you have a lift. I don't think you can drive the car up ramps. I test drove some Accords (hybrid and not), Civics, Subarus (but not the Legacy) and the Mazda 3. Like most people I suppose, I selected my car based on its value to me for the price. I had been driving a Scion xB for years, and while a great, basic car in my respects, it is almost lawn mower loud. The 6 is quiet, really quiet. The Accord is quicker, but I found the tire noise irksome, I did not like its ride as much, and the interior wasn't as nice. My 6 is quick enough for anything I do, and it is a pleasure to drive. I'm serious, I just enjoy driving. I look forward to getting in my car, and driving my mostly highway commute. I decided I didn't need the price/performance hit for the 4wd Subaru, mostly because I already own an Outback, and I really can't justify something like the WRX. I understand that some do not like the infotainment controls, but I really like them. I feel they are safer than a touch screen, and I don't leave fingerprints where I can see them. I'm tall with pretty broad shoulders, so my arms go around water bottles in the center console to the controls very comfortably. The voice commands work really well, too (especially compared to in my old lawn mower, er Scion). I only found two drawbacks. The side water bottle holders are not cup holders. No big deal for me, but perhaps for you. And, my wife is tiny and finds the seats too stiff. If she puts a cushion down, the car disbelieves her presence, and her airbag is off.

Overall, the Mazda 6 has been a pleasure. It looks beautiful on the inside and out, drives like a champ, and makes you feel like you got a lot for your money. These are all wonderful things that should make you look hard at this car as a potential buy. However, there are two items to be aware of before you buy. 1.) The infotainment system is slow. I mean really slow. After I start the car, it will sometimes be close to a full minute before I get the ability to view the Sirius channels. I'm locked in Linux booting hell, and there is no way out. The controls are locked and you just have to wait, and wait, and wait. I recently upgraded the firmware at the dealership hoping that latest version would fix the issue, but alas, I'm still waiting! The second issue has been my fuel efficiency. The car comes with a mpg monitor and I can see that I'm getting in the low 20's for most of my driving. I haven't come close the 28 mpg I was expecting. Getting in the 30's will take a miracle from above. I have the Turbo GTR which is obviously going to be less efficient than if you were looking at one of the non-Turbo models, but I still think the car is operating below where it should. Other than that, the car is outstanding. I'm happy driving it, I'm turning heads when people see it, and family is very comfortable when they are with me. Overall, very happy with everything but the two items above. Happy car hunting..

We needed to replace a Toyota Camry (avoid the 2009!!) in the worst time in history to find a car. The chip shortage and huge demand drove prices sky high. I looked for the usual Toyota and Honda offerings. Toyota has gone to pot. The look and feel of the new Camry's show decrease in quality and ride. Honda/Acura were OK, but felt strange since the gearing in new transmissions is so frequent. It felt like you went through 6 gears at 45mph! Then we discovered Mazda! They upped their game considerably since Nissan went to TATA. The Six is their largest sedan and very comfortable. And most important, does not feel like a boat! It is zippy and fun to drive, even at highway speeds. Yes, it has a GDI engine, but they fixed the carbon buildup issues that the 2017 model has been experiencing. The trunk is huge, back seat is spacious. The most important thing is that drive train is the same in all 6 models! The touring edition drives the same as the base at almost 10 grand less. The seats in the base are black cloth, which is fine. The driver seat is not electric, only manual adjustments. Overall, the car is great value.

Purchased and 2018 Grand Touring with the turbo. It had less than 13,000 on it, great looking car inside and out. Also have a 2018 Honda Sport 1.5 turbo. Both are unique and fun to drive but I favor the Honda more in gas mileage and acceleration however not buy much. The leather interior exceeds the honda as well as the looks plus the ride great. Honda handles better with the wider 19' tires and better technology overall. Would be nice if Mazda put wider tires to eliminate potential screeching with a high acceleration from first to second but the second gear on the mazda is something else. The infotainment center lacks in comparison to the accord sport. It's slow, but works nonetheless. Comfort goes to Mazda without a doubt but the Accord has the space and the head room and various driver seat interaction. Mazda driver seat sits high in the low position, plus I tend to sometimes brush my head when entering. I think they should really work on mre seating interaction and spacing but overall my family loves the comfort of the Mazda. Especially the back seats. You can't go wrong with both cars. CVT turbo and 6 Speed automatic 2.5 turbo. I rarely drive sport mode in both cars because I want to take it easy on the longevity of the turbos. Both cars great and unique will last for years to come.

An absolute bargain & still competitve

2019 Mazda 6 Signature 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

I went to the 2023 Auto show the day before I test drove and bought this car, especially since some notable new cars were present like the redesigned Honda Accord. I was also interested in some luxury cars like the Acura TLX since those aren’t bad deals with depreciation. I left hating the new Accord (the materials are OK- better than the last gen- but the interior was austere/unwelcoming in design). The TLX felt a little cheap inside for the price (the doors felt surprisingly hollow) and the infotainment was a mess. I sampled many other cars too, the only one I really liked being the VW Arteon. The next day is when I went to see the Mazda6 Signature that was for sale CPO nearby with only 4K miles at a great (for the market) price. As soon as I sat inside I knew this car was the right fit for me. It has a beautiful interior that puts many many luxury cars to shame in design and materials. After two months with the car I have only small complaints with it: there is faint static from the audio system even when it’s muted, apparently common amongst Mazda’s with the Bose systems; the door armrests could be more softly padded; piano black on the center console is a dumb choice. But the good far outweighs these: the interior design materials are just fantastic and tastefully chosen; the seats are amongst the most comfortable I’ve sat in with great shaping, strong heating/cooling functions, and lovely leather; the infotainment while dated is feature rich, reliable, has a nice screen quality, and is very easy to use (I love the rotary controller and how the shortcut buttons intelligently remap for CarPlay); the Bose system is good with an excellent sound stage- though a subwoofer would round out the sound more nicely. The interior has all the needed buttons and very little is buried in the screen's settings, which is a true relief in this day and age. The climate control is particularly attractive;y laid out without compromising on usability. The car is full of details that showed Mazda cared about making the top trim special. Even the front seat backs got an exclusive design (!) that’s very premium looking. The window frames are fully covered so there’s no exposed exterior paint facing the interior. The door pockets and footwells (front AND rear!) are absurdly well lit at night with ambient lighting. They even went as far as to cover the trunk hinges completely AND provide a handle to close the trunk- so many cars costing 2x more cost cut on these two items! The only obvious cost cutting (more like balancing here) is the lack of a hydraulic strut for the hood, otherwise this feels like a luxury car through and though. Nothing about the exterior needs to be said as it’s handsome and elegant, full stop. The paints are all beautiful. Three quirks of the car's platform being older: the keyless entry has no touch sensor, rather you have to press the button to unlock. This is great to me, as it’s easier to use with gloves in the winter and you can do two stage unlocking from the outside (which is not seemingly possible with a touch sensor), so you can press once to unlock just the driver's door and a second time to unlock them all. Second, the mirror adjustments are not memory linked, which can be annoying if you routinely switch drivers. Lastly, the surround view cameras are far from HD, but let’s be honest- who cares! As long as I can see the parking lines on the camera, it’s miles better than not having it. I use the camera all the time and love it. A fun fact is it can be activated at ANY speed- very useful for proving I'm in my lane when my partner says that I'm too close to one side! I also appreciate that the system comes on-screen automatically when the parking sensors in front detect an object. A feature here I love is the walk-away auto lock. It beeps when the system will out-lock, and has the perfect timing so you hear it lock as you walk away. And on that, the tone for all the beeps in the car is very pleasant and unobtrusive. I've had friends remark on how gentle they are! It drives with an excellent balance of composure and responsiveness. It’s just engaging enough to make you want to drive while still being extremely comfortable. The ride is supple yet very controlled though the large wheels allow small imperfections to be felt- the 17” wheels probably are the best choice. Wind noise is nonexistent, road noise depends on the road surface owing to the low profile tires. I intend on swapping on the smaller wheels for noise and ride quality improvements since my area has poor roads. The driver's assistance is behind the competition: no lane centering, for example, and the auto-cruise control is jerkier than most. But the functions are all non-nagging (the lane keep warning will vibrate the wheel if you choose, rather than beep, which is not always an option in this price range) and well calibrated otherwise. Overall they are pleasant additions and are implemented in such a way that they are in the background and do not detract from the experience like a Subaru's do (SO MUCH BEEPING in the current generation Legacy). The turbo engine is the the second smoothest I’ve driven but my favorite in terms of calibration. It brings the power on so low that it reminds me of the V8 in my E430, and the transmission shifts fast yet buttery smooth, with shift times so adeptly chosen I haven’t ever thought about them. My city fuel economy has been 22 so far on regular fuel. Suffice to say, this is one of the best gasoline drive-trains in a car south of $60K, you’d need to step up to an expensive luxury car to best it- and even then this will be miles more reliable. I don’t understand why this car didn’t sell, it’s so much better than the new Accord and Camry in so many ways. But that worked out for me, as it resulted it in being a bargain of a used car.

Low rpms, expect sluggish response - if the car responds. The motor, the transmission, and the controllers don’t know how to handle low speed maneuvers. Expect hesitations and a rocking back and forth accelerate to hesitate as the computers try to figure out what to do. Very frustrating, especially if you are accustom to old-school direct connections where your foot is the only controller in the game. Highway, better, but best if you are a lead-foot. Otherwise be prepared to be really concerned about safety. Year and months now past since this review above. No change to the constant hesitations, no change to what Mazda regional engineering says about the sensors and performance. The car is just designed with this jerky hesitation at low speeds for the gain of mileage and higher speed performance. Very frustrating for anyone who likes low-speed handling. If you run about town in ‘sport’ mode, this improves the low speed performance at the cost of gasoline consumption. I am just not impressed by this car at all.

Great looks inside and out but the MAZDA6 Turbo has lost its Zoom Zoom and traded it for a sloppy handling lead sled. Wish I had kept my 2016 GT w/ tech the package. MAZDA isn’t gonna stay in business if they loose the sporty ness and go luxury.

I just bought a Touring trim Mazda 6 last weekend and, having it for a week, the car still astonishes me. The styling makes the vehicle stand out from those on the road, the premium interior makes it feel like it’s more expensive than what I paid for, and the technology that it’s packed with like blind spot monitoring, cross traffic, adaptive cruise, etc is a cherry on top. It’s ride is silky smooth and the engine seems to sip gas as I have not gotten any lower than 28mpg of combined city and highway driving. My only gripe is that with it being the touring trim, I wish it had more standard like a garage home link, auto dim mirrors, and heated mirrors. The engine could also do with a bit more power and it would have been nice if the 2.5l turbo was the base engine. I often enjoy myself in this vehicle in the back roads as its suspension setup and steering makes it highly responsive and fun to drive to the point that I feel like I’m driving a Miata instead of a sedan, but the engine being a bit underpowered can be a bit of a letdown. Still a wonderful car and maybe in some years I’ll trade for the top trim

They announce, right off the top, that the ONE feature I want most in a car will no longer be offered? The manual transmission is at the very core of the driving experience. More than anything else, it is what makes the driver one with that machine. If Mazda will no longer produce the ONE feature I want most, one that has been revered and beloved for more than 100 years, I am DONE with Mazda. I have driven a Mazda for 15 years, but this is, apparently, the end.

This car at this trim level seems to balance everything well and meet all of my needs as a 23 year old graduate student with no family to haul around in it. The interior is incredibly sleek and the has been complemented by virtually everyone I've had sit in it—the exterior is much the same. I opted for the soul red exterior and black interior and I think they complement each other well. I live in Michigan where the summer can make the interior a bit warm in direct sunlight, so if you live in even warmer/sunnier areas I would suggest getting the sand interior color. I've had no problems getting through the snow in Michigan with the FWD. One of the reasons I picked Mazda was because of their good track record for reliability, and with no major internal changes for the 2019 model year I expect this car to last me a long time as do previous years. I test drove the Subaru Legacy along with the Mazda 6 when initially looking for cars and I'm very satisfied with my choice. The Legacy was the cheaper option, but with Subaru having similar brand reliability to Mazda and the Mazda 6 just looking better overall with a leather interior option at a lower price point than offered for the Legacy it seemed like a no brainer. Standing at 6'3" I've had no problems with head clearance or space for the driver or passenger seat, although the rear seats can be a bit cramped for leg room and head room especially for someone my size. Opting the touring tear level gives you 19" wheels with more clearance which I personally enjoy. The infotainment system can be a bit slow to start with the bluetooth on my phone connecting and beginning to play music much slower than when trying it on my brother's 2015 Chevrolet Impala and you can't use the touchscreen while the car is moving, but the knobs in the center console are easy enough to use. The glossy black plastic for the center console area and by the window controls does show fingerprints, hair, and dirt pretty well but I think these are minor issues. The addition of android auto, adaptive cruise control, and an extremely quiet cabin have made long drives so much more enjoyable than in my previous car, a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. The Mazda 6 also has very responsive handling and despite being a 2.5L 4cyl feels quick. Overall I'm very happy with this car with no major complaints.

2019 Mazda 6 Signature 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

The Mazda6 is a practical, durable vehicle for those of us who'd rather not drive SUVs. The top of the line Signature trim adds a turbocharged engine will fab acceleration, much better interior finish and all the safety equipment imaginable. Alas, the Mazda6 is no more. Perhaps it will make a comeback as an EV. Until then, the alternatives are in the sporty category are limited to the Honda Accord and the Genesis GV (for more bucks).
