An Awesome Vehicle With a Few Considerations

Justin, 07/23/2021

A bit about me, I measure less than 6'0" and have been driving a Toyota Prius for the better part of 8 or so years now and just recently purchased the Lexus UX250h as my primary vehicle. Generally speaking, most of my weekly driving is spent on the highway on a commute to work but I also have an occasional several hundred mile drive to visit family and an every now-and-then need to move cargo like moving boxes, tables, and chairs around for friends. I'm happy to say that I've thoroughly enjoyed practically every bit about this car so far. If I'm being honest, I did have a few hesitations based on some reviews and videos I watched while I was researching online, so I'm going to try to address those points based on my own experience just below: INITIAL RESERVATIONS "the rear seat situation is not roomy enough" I just spent a weekend driving two adults around seated in the rear seats who both measure about 5'6" and neither complained at all about the leg room, head room, or width of the rear seats. Yes, it is slightly smaller than some other vehicles (like the Prius), but the comfort of the seats themselves make it a pleasant and cozy enough ride. Again, highly contingent on how tall you (the driver) and your passengers are, I'd go as far to say that if you are under 6'0" it should be a pretty enjoyable ride throughout. "not enough cargo space in the trunk" Totally subjective to your needs, but I found going from a Prius (which I think has a ton of cargo volume) to this UX250h (less space than the Prius) hasn't been an issue so far. I can fit two golf bags in the rear space when removing the cover and some pretty massive boxes when the rear seats are lowered which has more than suited my needs up to this point. "infotainment trackpad is frustratingly annoying to use" I don't disagree that the trackpad needs some work, but that hasn't been an issue because: A) the most-used controls (for me, that's the A/C controls, radio on/off, and volume control) all have their own physical buttons so I don't have to use the trackpad for the most common functions. I'd like to add that the A/C control buttons are super satisfying to use, I find myself fidgeting with them all the time, kudos to Lexus on not forgetting the little details. B) Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I have never been a fan of any of the OEM-installed navigation systems ever so the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in this vehicle allows me to not only use the GPS app of my preference (Google Maps or Apple Maps are the two I use), it also allows me to use my phone to input things like addresses before I leave for my destination. Again, in this case I don't have to use the trackpad for this function either All that said, the need for the trackpad is minimal, and even when I do have to use it I've now found that after a short while of use I am now used to its somewhat finicky design (i.e. it's not unbearably bad). "not enough horsepower" Once again, completely subjective (you know you), but I've found this has more than enough power for all the everyday driving situations I've run into in life. Merging onto highways, navigating stop-and-go traffic, keeping up with highway speeds so as not to interrupt the flow of traffic, and generally zipping around town have been done with ease. Will I be taking this to the track? Absolutely not. Would I be able to beat out my old Prius merging into a lane? 100%. I've come to grips with the reality that I really only need so much car to get an enjoyable and comfortable ride and this UX250h meets (and even sometimes exceeds) that. Again, been more than happy with this vehicle so far and am looking forward to keeping it for many many years to come.

I ❤️ My UX 250H

I bought the luxury trim because that’s what was available. I find this vehicle to be underpriced. I got the birch interior which is light grey with a black accent which is gorgeous. But again it’s what was available. It’s super nice to drive and I find myself driving a little slower cause I like to watch my MPG grow!! (First hybrid). The price is one of the things I like the most. I feel like this vehicle is the absolute best in its class fir the price, under 40K. I can afford a more expensive car but I don’t want to. There’s a lot of other things I want to spend money on!!!

Great choice for urban transportation

I had two NX f sports before this which were fantastic. It’s been about a month now with the Ux. I have been intrigued with this since it came on the market. It drives amazingly well for a small wheelbase car. The gas mileage is double that of the nx and takes regular fuel which the nx turbo does not. What I don’t understand is why Lexus got rid of the Siri Hands Free feature that now only works if you plug in for Apple CarPlay. So if you like that former feature be ready. Apparently it’s across their entire line of vehicles. Really dumb decision. So I will lease it inexpensively for two years and tool around very efficiently. For now it’s a modern and much cheaper alternative to going electric. Finally I don’t understand why they make it so difficult to get the luxury package which really would make it a true Lexus.

2021 UX 250h Premium - Perfect for Empty Nesters

Great vehicle! I agree with all the positive comments made by others. At 10 months old I also experienced the same issue of the vehicle suddenly needing to be boosted after only a few days of inactivity.  Lexus service advised that some were having this issue.  In one visit to the dealer where they performed two different software upgrades and installed a new battery under warranty, the problem was solved.  Other than this issue the vehicle has delivered everything that was promised. I get a chuckle out of some people's complaints such as the trunk space.  Yes it is small but you can see that. It is like someone buying a corvette then complaining there is no room for a hockey stick or no back seat. I bought the car primarily for two people so with the rear seats down there's plenty of room for two sets of golf clubs and two folding carts. The rear seat is snug for anyone over 6'4" but again, the UX was not intended for five football players to embark on a cross country road trip. Others complain about the lack of power and I agree it will not win any drag races. The 250h 0-60 time is about middle of the pack when compared to other vehicles. There are many recent and new vehicles that are slower. Check out https://www.zeroto60times.com/body-style/crossover-suv/ Someone else complained about the noise when backing up.  In Canada and perhaps some states in the US, as a safety feature when in electric mode the vehicle emits a sound to warn pedestrians. I was unsure of what was happening the first time I went into reverse.  Another complained about poorer gas mileage in cold weather.  Unfortunately all vehicles, including fully electric, suffer in range and mileage in very cold temperatures. There is one other odd thing with the hybrid.  After turning off the vehicle, approximately 5 hours later a strange sound occurs.  This normal and is the fuel line evaporator doing it's job.

Going from a very heavy, tight and twitchy suspension (but very powerful) Audi Q5 3l turbo diesel to this ultra smooth, smaller, more nimble, easy to drive SUV has met all our needs and expectations. Acceleration is good, visibility excellent, ride superb. Still on our first tan of gas but looks like it will be around 32 mpg. UPDATE: Now at 2500 miles and actual mileage has been 40-41 mpg in mixed driving. Very happy!

A fine hybrid SUV option

Jerry, 11/11/2021

We have had a UX 250h F Sport for three years and it's a fine vehicle. Ours has had no mechanical problems. This is one of the few hybrid SUV's available and it gets a legit 40+MPH. It is quiet and fun to drive. It has better and quieter acceleration than online reviews tend to claim. It's a hybrid, for heaven's sake. And the infotainment system is a little quirky but is just fine once you get used to it. Instrument cluster is well designed and interior is very well appointed with comfortable and supportive seats. Downsides? It's a little small if you need to carry a lot of cargo, and the back seat is cramped. Someday soon there will be fully electric small SUV's with 300 miles of range....but not yet. So we are keeping ours until then.

I have owned my 2021 Lexus UX F sport hybrid for 1 month now and absolutely love it. It’s quiet, efficient, and nice to drive. It is not a super powerful car but I want the fuel efficiency more than anything. This is my first Lexus and I am very impressed with the overall quality of this vehicle. The Lexus dealership was amazing to work with. I love my new Lexus and the UX is a great choice for a single person or young couple who does not require a ton of space. It’s great at what is does and I could not be happier.

First of all, Car n Driver review had been "compromised" , this car actually deserved 2.5 to 3 stars. Windows were .2 to .3 cm thinner, bottom of all 4 doors had water stains "inside" after wet road condition, extremely high road/wind noisy on highway, you cannot use speaker phone because of the noisy condition. The rest of the car is average, for the price after tax $50K, I would like my money back, but cannot, not worth buying, this is not a Lexus.

Nicest all around commuter for $40k

My wife wanted an awd crossover for her 80mi/day commute. We found this to be the best option for the money. Theres a lot that it doesnt offer, so dont expect a jack of all trades. What it does offer is 40mpg average, a nice driving environment (for commuting), reliability and some level of all weather capability. Would I want one? No. But I do feel it suits its purpose well and our money was well spent.

I WANT to love it, but...

We wanted a compact luxury hatch with AWD and a hybrid powertrain. This was really the only car that fit all of the parameters. I'll start with the positives: Positives: The materials and interior fit and finish are very nice. I was also sold on the fact that a 6' person like me can sit in the back without having to strain my neck. It has a lot of nice touches like the dual hinged center console and little cubby for change. I wouldn't call it "pretty", but it's definitely sporty looking and design has grown on me a bit. I also really like the fact that, unlike the turbocharged German competitors, the car is perfectly happy with regular 87 octane fuel. But there are a lot of big things that make me say "if only..." The drawbacks: Most frustrating is the laughably small fuel tank. We only use it around town, so it's not a big concern for road trips, but when the fuel light comes on, you only have about 20 miles of range left. Even in a city, this can create some serious range anxiety - which is an odd thing for an ostensibly gas-powered car. It's barely 8 gallons even when totally full, so despite being a hybrid if the weather is even moderately cold, you'll spend a lot of time looking for gas stations. The trunk is also comically small. Fine for small items, but it really makes it hard to use for more than short jaunts if you have a dog, child, or even a full shopping cart at Costco. There's seemingly no way to put the wipers in a "service mode" to make them easy to change or even clean them if they get snowy and icy. So if you don't have a garage, it will be annoying to clean off in the winter. Finally - and this is a big one - are the overall user controls. This car really needs a touchscreen, but instead you're stuck with a mousepad setup that's a poor fit with the act of driving. It makes navigating different functions in Apple CarPlay a lot more difficult than it needs to be. The volume control is in a weird spot, and the HVAC controls are laid out as a single row of non-intuitive rocker switches. If you're a single person living a minimalist lifestyle in southern California (and you can get past the lousy user interface), this might be the perfect car for you. But I just can't bring myself to love it like I thought I could.

noisy engine, tiny trunk, infotainment terrible

Aspiring Nader, 08/21/2023

The car has comfortable seats and it drives well, even in the snow. Has lots of safety features. Power adequate but noisy when the engine kicks in. Visibility very poor. The trunk is a joke. There is no spare tire, so you must buy run-flat tires. Maintenance is expensive - $1,000 - $1,500 service costs for a 2021 car with less than 10,000kms. Canadian customers note: Unlike other car manufacturers, Toyota/Lexus do not provide confirmation letters regarding safety and anti-theft for the USA. So if you buy your Lexus in Canada and need to register it for study or work leave in the USA, you may face a ton of hurdles, expenses and delays.

2023 UX250h I purchased on 12/2022 is good in City driving, but above 50 mph on the Highway, not too comfortable for your ears after a few minutes, "very disappointed" for LEXUS as a quality automobile company dish out such low quality noisy car.

Quiet, smooth, and fuel efficient

Beach Doc, 08/29/2022

It is a great car to drive, with comfy seats and quiet interior. I love the birch colored seats with black dashboard and console - the lighter interior keeps the cabin cooler in the summers, and the black (I got the washi trim) looks cool. It just looks luxurious. Only minor complaint is that the cabin itself is small, so if you have the build of a football linebacker or heavyweight wrestler, this car will feel snug especially if you have folks sitting in the back seat. It was perfectly fine for me driving a full carload of 5 - my teen boys and their friends. With the safety features (automatic braking, lane departure warning, etc.) I feel incredibly safe in despite it being on the smaller size. A lot of folks complain about the lack of acceleration and power, but honestly, who cares? You get a hybrid to be fuel efficient, not race around like you are too important to spare 5 extra seconds to reach the speed limit. Having said that, I am perfectly content (as a former Los Angeles driver who had a horrendous commute on the 405 and often found myself frequently doing multiple lane changes in quick succession just to get anywhere in a decent amount of time) with the acceleration - the smaller size certainly helps with maneuvering in traffic as well as parking. Given the fuel economy, I also love not wasting my time in line at the pump - talk about a time saver!

I traded my 2012 for this little car, because I wanted AWD. I like that it sits a little higher off the ground and has a quieter, more comfortable, ride plus all of the new safety bells and whistles! Although this too is a hybrid, I do miss the Prius gas mileage! This Lexus seldom gets more than 36 mpg. & I wish it had a larger fuel tank! 10.5 gals has only about 350 mile range on a good day & I don't like to get too close to empty, so I fill-up at around 300. I had to have the windshield replaced at about 6K miles, & darned if before 10K miles another rock (on the freeway) didn't hit in about the same place on the passenger side! It hasn't cracked yet, but I do wonder about the windshield design! This car has a small turning diameter and that is probably my favorite thing about it! Besides a larger fuel tank, my wish is for an on demand AWD that works at all speeds instead of just up to 45 mph!

This is a great hybrid SUV for first-timers crossing over from a sedan, or for those who don't need a lot of cabin space. It has the luxury of Lexus but also the "truckiness" of a sport utility vehicle. Its center of gravity isn't as high as the other Lexus SUVs, so it's a good vehicle to get acclimated to a higher COG. It has almost all the bells and whistles as the Lexus sedans, too.

Water/weather between door edge and interior seal

My one complaint is what I suggest is a design flaw. The door and hatch let rain water/road puddle water/car wash water through to the interior seal. It does not get IN to the interior, but these areas need to be wiped down after a rainy day drive etc. It's a nuisance and can get on clothes when getting in and out of car.

Easy on gas and quiet. Just the right size for me. Seating room for 5 and enough storage. I am satisfied and happy. Nice car to drive.

This vehicle is great because it's efficient and can fit into pretty much any parking spots as well as make U turns without having to do a 3 point turn. the only thing is it's a bit shorter than typical cars so the backseat is crammed but hey that's a bonus in not being the DD at times.

This car comes with all the bells and whistles Lexus is known for. The interior is well designed and very comfortable. Dash function and technology is fairly easy to understand and the hybrid mileage is excellent in town and on the high way which I was surprised at. For my first Lexus and coming from driving VW only for many years, I am pleasantly surprised. Love this smaller crossover of car and SUV!

If you’re looking for reliability with a boatload of bells and whistles that barely sips gas this has to be the one for you because it does it in the most Stylish way possible. You Won’t be sorry and would only regret to not have done it sooner
