- Extroverted supercar styling
- The last truly exotic supercar
Cons
- Uncomfortable for long trips
- Some flexibility required to get in and out
- Nonexistent rear visibility
What's new
- Convertible now available in the same 759-hp SVJ trim as the coupe
- Part of the first Aventador generation introduced for 2012
Overview
Looking to make a statement and have a small fortune that you don't mind parting with? Perhaps the 2020 Lamborghini Aventador could be your next acquisition. This mid-engine V12 supercar is a monument to conspicuous consumption and otherworldly performance. After undergoing a substantial refresh last year, the Aventador returns mostly unchanged, though you can now get the higher-performing SVJ model as a convertible.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2020 Lamborghini Aventador S 2dr Coupe AWD (6.5L 12cyl 7AM) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.32 per gallon for premium unleaded in Virginia.

We're also very likely looking at the end of the line for the Aventador. It's been in production for nearly a decade and we expect to see a replacement model soon (possibly with a hybrid powertrain). That means if you're drawn to the Aventador's aesthetics and raucous 700-plus-horsepower engines, you might want to order yours now. It's unlikely that its successor will be any less flamboyant, especially since it will have to upstage other outrageous exotics from Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren and Aston Martin.
Which Aventador does Edmunds recommend?
There's no significant difference between the Aventador models except for price and bragging rights in your local Lambo club. We're certain most drivers will find the anything-but-standard Aventador S more than capable of turning heads and quickening your pulse. For most Lamborghini clients, the real decision comes down to the aesthetic choices. If there's one thing we'd add, it'd be the nose-lifting system (standard on the SVJ) that helps you avoid embarrassing driveway scrapes.
2020 Lamborghini Aventador models
The 2020 Lamborghini Aventador is a two-passenger supercar that is available as either a coupe or convertible. The removable hardtop panels fit in the front cargo area (frunk) when not in use. It is offered in two trim levels: Aventador S and Aventador SVJ (Super Veloce Jota). The Aventador S models are powered by a 6.5-liter V12 engine (730 horsepower, 509 lb-ft of torque), while SVJ models receive an output boost (759 hp, 531 lb-ft). These engines are paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels.
Aventador S
Standard features for the entry-level Aventador are sparse and include:
- Manually adjustable rear wing
- Carbon-ceramic brake rotors
- Rear-wheel steering
- Power-folding, heated mirrors
- Front and rear parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking)
- Adaptive suspension system
- Dual-zone automatic climate control
- Navigation system
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Aventador SVJ
Stepping up to the SVJ adds a handful of items that include:
- Active aerodynamics
- Nose-lifting system (raises the front suspension to avoid scraping the chin spoiler on driveways)
- Carbon-fiber interior elements
- Faux suede-wrapped steering wheel
- Carbon-fiber exterior elements (for the SJV 63 special edition)
The Aventador's standard feature list may seem unusually light for a vehicle costing upward of half a million dollars, but the options list is significantly longer. There is a dizzying array of exterior color choices, graphics, stripes, wheels, carbon-fiber embellishments, upholstery options and even seat-belt color selections. Some of the SVJ features are available on the Aventador S as options. Otherwise, heated seats are among the few typical add-ons.

Safety
Our experts like the Aventador models:
- Carbon-Fiber Monocoque
- Surrounds passengers with a rigid and strong safety cell, allowing the crumple zones to absorb energy.
- Electronic Stability Program
- Helps prevent spinouts before they start by selectively applying the brakes to specific wheels.
- Knee Airbags
- Help keep passengers from submarining under the seat belt during a collision.
